The effect of TMD evolution on the Sivers asymmetry in back-to-back $J/\psi+\gamma$ and $J/\psi+\text{jet}$ production at the Electron-Ion-Collider

We present an estimate of the Sivers asymmetry in back-to-back $J/\psi$-photon and $J/\psi$-jet production in electron-proton collisions in the kinematics of the upcoming Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) in a transverse momentum dependent (TMD) factorization framework, and also incorporating the TMD evolution. We use the non-relativistic Quantum Chromodynamics (NRQCD) model to study the production mechanism of $J/\psi$. The gluon induced channel dominates, and these are promising probes of the less known gluon Sivers function. We incorporate the TMD evolution in the cross section and Sivers asymmetry in the Collins-Soper-Sterman (CSS) approach and show that the asymmetry is sizable even after the evolution. Although the cross section for $J/\psi$-jet production depends on the long-distance matrix element (LDME) set chosen, the asymmetry remains largely unaffected. The asymmetry is independent of the LDME at leading order for $J/\psi$-photon production. Thus, the Sivers asymmetry in both processes is a robust probe of the gluon Sivers function.

Unraveling Gluon TMDs in $J/ψ$ and Pion production at the EIC

We investigate the azimuthal asymmetries such as $\cos2{ϕ_T}$ and Sivers symmetry for $J/ψ$ and $π^\pm$ production in electron-proton scattering, focusing on scenarios where the $J/ψ$ and the pion are produced in an almost back-to-back configuration. The electron is unpolarized, while the proton can be unpolarized or transversely polarized. For the $J/ψ$ formation, we use non-relativistic QCD (NRQCD), while $π^\pm$ is formed due to parton fragmentation. In this kinematics, we utilize the transverse momentum-dependent factorization framework to calculate the cross sections and asymmetries. We consider both quark and gluon-initiated processes and show that the gluon contribution dominates. We provide numerical estimates of the upper bounds on the azimuthal asymmetries, as well as employ a Gaussian parametrization for the gluon transverse momentum distributions (TMDs), within the kinematical region accessible by the upcoming Electron-Ion Collider (EIC).

TMD evolution effect on $\cos2ϕ$ azimuthal asymmetry in a back-to-back production of $J/ψ$ and jet at the EIC

A back-to-back semi-inclusive $J/ψ+ jet$ production is a promising process to study gluon transverse momentum distribution (TMDs) at the future electron-ion collider (EIC). A back-to-back configuration allows a higher transverse momentum for $J/ψ$. We present an extension of a previous work where we studied $\cos2ϕ$ azimuthal asymmetry within the TMD factorization framework for this process. We present and compare the effect of TMD evolution on the asymmetry, in two approaches that differ in the parameterization of the perturbative tails of the TMDs and the non-perturbative factors. We show that the asymmetry depends on the parameterizations of the non-perturbative Sudakov factors in the larger $b_T$ region and on the perturbative part of the evolution kernel. We use NRQCD to estimate the $J/ψ$ production and show the effect of using different long-distance matrix element (LDME) sets. Overall, the asymmetry after incorporating TMD evolution is small, but increases with the transverse momentum imbalance of the $J/ψ$-jet pair.

Azimuthal asymmetries in $D$-meson and jet production at the EIC

We study the azimuthal asymmetries in back-to-back leptoproduction of $D$-meson and jet to probe the gluon TMDs in an unpolarized and transversely polarized electron-proton collision at the kinematics of EIC. We give predictions for unpolarized cross-sections within the TMD factorization framework. In $D$-meson and jet formation, the only leading order contribution comes from the photon gluon fusion process. We give numerical estimates of the upper bound on the azimuthal asymmetries with the saturation of positivity bounds; also, we present the asymmetries using a Gaussian parameterization of TMDs. We obtain sizable asymmetries in the kinematics that will be accessible at EIC.

$J/ψ$ polarization in large-$P_T$ semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering at the EIC

We present a detailed phenomenological study of $J/ψ$ polarization in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering processes, focusing on the kinematics accessible at the future Electron-Ion Collider. We show theoretical estimates for the standard polarization parameters for different frames usually adopted in the literature, in the large $P_T$ region, namely $P_T\gg Λ_\text{QCD}$, where collinear factorization is expected to hold. We adopt both the Color Singlet Model and the Nonrelativistic QCD approach, paying special attention to the role of different sets of Long Distance Matrix Elements. Finally we present a preliminary analysis of some frame independent polarization invariants.

Azimuthal asymmetries in $J/ψ$-photon production at the EIC

We calculate azimuthal asymmetries in back-to-back production of $J/ψ$ and a photon in electron-proton scattering process at the future electron-ion collider (EIC) using TMD factorization framework. We consider the cases where the proton is unpolarized or transversely polarized. For the formation of $J/ψ$, non-relativistic QCD (NRQCD) is used. We find that the cross-section gets contribution from only one color octet state, as a result, the azimuthal modulations become independent of the long-distance matrix elements (LDMEs), and thus can be used to probe, in particular the gluon TMDs which are dominant in this kinematics. We show estimates of the upper bounds of different azimuthal asymmetries using the positivity bounds on TMDs. In addition, we show estimate of asymmetries using the Gaussian parametrization of the TMDs.

$J/ψ$ polarization in semi-inclusive DIS at low and high transverse momentum

We study the polar and azimuthal decay angular distributions of $J/ψ$ mesons produced in semi-inclusive, deep-inelastic electron-proton scattering. For the description of the quarkonium formation mechanism, we adopt the framework of nonrelativistic QCD, with the inclusion of the intermediate color-octet channels that are suppressed at most by a factor $v^4$ in the velocity parameter $v$ relative to the leading color-singlet channel. We put forward factorized expressions for the helicity structure functions in terms of transverse momentum dependent gluon distributions and shape functions, which are valid when the $J/ψ$ transverse momentum is small with respect to the hard scale of the process. By requiring that such expressions correctly match with the collinear factorization results at high transverse momentum, we determine the perturbative tails of the shape functions and find them to be independent of the $J/ψ$ polarization. In particular, we focus on the $\cos 2ϕ$ azimuthal decay asymmetry, which originates from the distribution of linearly polarized gluons inside an unpolarized proton. We therefore suggest a novel experiment for the extraction of this so-far unknown parton density that could be performed, in principle, at the future Electron-Ion Collider.

Prospects for quarkonium studies at the high-luminosity LHC

Prospects for quarkonium-production studies accessible during the upcoming high-luminosity phases of the CERN Large Hadron Collider operation after 2021 are reviewed. Current experimental and theoretical open issues in the field are assessed together with the potential for future studies in quarkonium-related physics. This will be possible through the exploitation of the huge data samples to be collected in proton-proton, proton-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions, both in the collider and fixed-target modes. Such investigations include, among others, those of: (i) J/psi and Upsilon produced in association with other hard particles; (ii) chi(c,b) and eta(c,b) down to small transverse momenta; (iii) the constraints brought in by quarkonia on gluon PDFs, nuclear PDFs, TMDs, GPDs and GTMDs, as well as on the low-x parton dynamics; (iv) the gluon Sivers effect in polarised-nucleon collisions; (v) the properties of the quark-gluon plasma produced in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions and of collective partonic effects in general; and (vi) double and triple parton scatterings.

Sivers asymmetry in inelastic $J/ψ$ leptoproduction at the EIC

We study the Sivers asymmetry in inelastic $J/ψ$ leptoproduction, $ep^\uparrow \to e+ J/ψ+X$, within a transverse momentum dependent scheme, the so-called generalized parton model (GPM). The effects of final-state interactions are properly taken into account by employing the color-gauge invariant GPM (CGI-GPM). For the $J/ψ$ formation the non-relativistic QCD (NRQCD) framework is adopted. Predictions for unpolarized cross sections and maximized Sivers asymmetries at EIC energies are given.

Process dependence of the gluon Sivers function in $p^\uparrow p \to J/ψ+ X$ within a TMD approach in NRQCD

We consider the transverse single-spin asymmetry (SSA) for $J/ψ$ production in $p^\uparrow p \to J/ψ+ X$ within a TMD approach in non-relativistic QCD. Extending a previous study [1], we employ here the color-gauge invariant generalized parton model (CGI-GPM), in which spin and intrinsic transverse momentum effects are taken into account, together with leading-order initial- and final-state interactions (ISIs and FSIs). We find that, even when the heavy-quark pair is produced in a color-octet state, ISIs and FSIs lead to a nonvanishing SSA, allowing, in principle, to test the process dependence of the gluon Sivers function (GSF). We show that of the two independent contributions, due to the so-called $f$- and $d$-type GSFs, appearing in the CGI-GPM, the $d$-type one turns out to be dynamically suppressed. Therefore, as already found adopting the Color-Singlet Model approach for the $J/ψ$ formation [2], only the $f$-type GSF could play a role in phenomenology. A comparison with the corresponding results obtained in the generalized parton model, without the inclusion of ISIs and FSIs, is also carried out.

Probing Nucleons and Nuclei in High Energy Collisions

This volume is a collection of contributions for the 7-week program "Probing Nucleons and Nuclei in High Energy Collisions" that was held at the Institute for Nuclear Theory in Seattle, WA, USA, from October 1 until November 16, 2018. The program was dedicated to the physics of the Electron Ion Collider (EIC), the world's first polarized electron-nucleon (ep) and electron-nucleus (eA) collider to be constructed in the USA. These proceedings are organized by chapters, corresponding to the weeks of the program: Week I, Generalized parton distributions; Week II, Transverse spin and TMDs; Week III, Longitudinal spin; Week IV, Symposium week; Weeks V & VI, eA collisions; Week VII, pA and AA collisions. We hope these proceedings will be useful to readers as a compilation of EIC-related science at the end of the second decade of the XXI century.

Sivers Asymmetry in Photoproduction of $J/ψ$ and Jet at the EIC

We calculate the Sivers asymmetry in the photoproduction of almost back-to-back $J/ψ$-jet pair in the process $ep^\uparrow \to J/ψ+\mathrm{jet}+X$, which will be possible at the future planned electron-ion collider (EIC). We use the framework of generalized parton model (GPM), and NRQCD for calculating the $J/ψ$ production rate. We include contributions from both color singlet and color octate states in the asymmetry. We obtain sizable Sivers asymmetry that can be promising to determine the gluon Sivers function. We also investigate the effect of TMD evolution on the asymmetry.

Single-spin asymmetries in $p^\uparrow p \to J/ψ+X$ within a TMD approach: role of the color octet mechanism

We calculate the transverse single-spin asymmetry (SSA) for $J/ψ$ production in proton-proton collisions, within non-relativistic QCD, employing the transverse momentum dependent, generalized parton model, which includes both spin and intrinsic motion effects. In particular, we study the role of the color octet mechanism in accessing the gluon Sivers function. In doing that, we also show, within this approach, how the singularities coming from color octet terms in the low-$P_T$ region can be handled, leading to finite cross sections. Predictions for both unpolarized cross sections and SSAs are given and compared against PHENIX data. Estimates for LHCb in the fixed target mode are also presented.

Sivers effect in Inelastic $J/ψ$ Photoproduction in $ep^\uparrow$ Collision in Color Octet Model

The prediction of single-spin asymmetry in inelastic photoproduction of $J/ψ$ in $ep^\uparrow$ collision is presented. At next-to-leading order, the dominating process is photon-gluon fusion, $γ+g\rightarrow J/ψ+g$ for the production of $J/ψ$ in $e+p^\uparrow\rightarrow J/ψ+X$, which directly probes the gluon Sivers function. Using the non-relativistic QCD based color octet model, the color octet states $\leftidx{^{3}}{S}{_1}^{(8)}$, $\leftidx{^{1}}{S}{_0}^{(8)}$ and $\leftidx{^{3}}{P}{_{J(0,1,2)}}^{(8)}$ contribution to $J/ψ$ production is calculated. Sizable asymmetry is estimated as a function of transverse momentum $P_T$ and energy fraction $z$ of $J/ψ$ in the range $0<P_T\leq 1$ GeV and $0.3<z\leq 0.9$. The unpolarized differential cross section of inelastic $J/ψ$ photoproduction is found to be in good agreement with H1 and ZEUS data.

$J/ψ$ Production in Polarized and Unpolarized $ep$ Collision and Sivers and $\cos2ϕ$ Asymmetries

We calculate the Sivers and $\cos2ϕ$ azimuthal asymmetries in $J/ψ$ production in polarized and unpolarized semi-inclusive $ep$ collision respectively, using the formalism based on transverse momentum dependent parton distributions (TMDs). Non-relativistic QCD based color octet model is employed for calculating the $J/ψ$ production rate. The Sivers asymmetry in this process directly probes the gluon Sivers function. The estimated Sivers asymmetry at $z=1$ is negative which is in good agreement with COMPASS data. We also investigate the effect of TMD evolution on the Sivers asymmetry. The $\cos2ϕ$ asymmetry is sizable and probes the linearly polarized gluon distribution in an unpolarized proton.

Linearly polarized gluons in charmonium and bottomonium production in color octet model

We study the possibility to probe the unpolarized and linearly polarized transverse momentum- dependent gluon distributions in unpolarized pp collision in charmonium and bottomonium produc- tion, employing non-relativistic QCD (NRQCD) based color octet model within transverse momentum dependent (TMD) factorization framework. The transverse momentum (p T ) and rapidity distributions of J/ψ and Υ(1S) at LHCb, RHIC and AFTER energies are estimated. Significant modulations in transverse momentum spectrum of quarkonium in the low p T region is obtained when contributions of linearly polarized gluons inside an unpolarized proton are taken into account. The results of quarko- nium production in color octet model and color evaporation model are compared.
