Tunable wavevector filtering in borophane based normal metal-barrier-normal metal junctions

We study the transport properties of Dirac electrons across a two-dimensional normal metal-barrier-normal metal (NBN) interfaces in monolayer borophane. We analyse the transmission probability with variation of the width of the barrier region, the incidence energy and transverse momentum. We demonstrate that a gap exists in the transmission probability spectrum and the position, width of transmission gap can be tuned by the barrier strength and transverse momentum respectively. We point out the variation of the ballistic tunneling conductance as a function of the width of the barrier region and incident energy. We find that the oscillatory or decaying nature of the conductance with variation in barrier width depends upon the number of propagating and evanescent modes which are controlled by the incident energy and barrier strength. We show that the conductance as a function of incident energy drops to a minimum value when the incident energy becomes identical to the barrier height and identify that this effect is caused by the presence of evanescent modes inside the barrier. Based on these findings we propose a perfectly tunable wavevector filter for Borophane. We expect our findings posses useful applications in borophane based nano-electronic devices.

Anisotropic transport of normal metal-barrier-normal metal junctions in monolayer phosphorene

We study transport properties of a phosphorene monolayer in the presence of single and multiple potential barriers of height $U_0$ and width $d$, using both continuum and microscopic lattice models, and show that the nature of electron transport along its armchair edge ($x$ direction) is qualitatively different from its counterpart in both conventional two-dimensional electron gas with Schrödinger-like quasiparticles and graphene or surfaces of topological insulators hosting massless Dirac quasiparticles. We show that the transport, mediated by massive Dirac electrons, allows one to achieve collimated quasiparticle motion along $x$ and thus makes monolayer phosphorene an ideal experimental platform for studying Klein paradox. We study the dependence of the tunneling conductance $G \equiv G_{xx}$ as a function of $d$ and $U_0$, and demonstrate that for a given applied voltage $V$ its behavior changes from oscillatory to decaying function of $d$ for a range of $U_0$ with finite non-zero upper and lower bounds, and provide analytical expression for these bounds within which $G$ decays with $d$. We contrast such behavior of $G$ with that of massless Dirac electrons in graphene and also with that along the zigzag edge ($y$ direction) in phosphorene where the quasiparticles obey an effective Schrödinger equation at low energy. We also study transport through multiple barriers along $x$ and demonstrate that these properties hold for transport through multiple barrier as well. Finally, we suggest concrete experiments which may verify our theoretical predictions.

Optical Lattice Modulation Spectroscopy for Spin-orbit Coupled Bosons

Interacting bosons with two "spin'' states in a lattice show novel superfluid-insulator phase transitions in the presence of spin-orbit coupling. Depending on the parameter regime, bosons in the superfluid phase can condense to either a zero momentum state or to one or multiple states with finite momentum, leading to an unconventional superfluid phase. We study the response of such a system to modulation of the optical lattice potential. We show that the change in momentum distribution after lattice modulation shows distinct patterns in the Mott and the superfluid phase and these patterns can be used to detect these phases and the quantum phase transition between them. Further, the momentum resolved optical modulation spectroscopy can identify both the gapless (Goldstone) gapped amplitude (Higgs) mode of the superfluid phase and clearly distinguish between the superfluid phases with a zero momentum condensate and a twisted superfluid phase by looking at the location of these modes in the Brillouin zone. We discuss experiments which can test our theory.

A perturbative renormalization group approach to driven quantum systems

We use a perturbative momentum shell renormalization group (RG) approach to study the properties of a driven quantum system at zero temperature. To illustrate the technique, we consider a bosonic $ϕ^4$ theory with an arbitrary time dependent interaction parameter $λ(t)=λf(ω_0 t)$, where $ω_0$ is the drive frequency and derive the RG equations for the system using a Keldysh diagrammatic technique. We show that the scaling of $ω_0$ is analogous to that of temperature for a system in thermal equilibrium and its presence provides a cutoff scale for the RG flow. We analyze the resultant RG equations, derive an analytical condition for such a drive to take the system out of the gaussian regime, and show that the onset of the non-gaussian regime occurs concomitantly with appearance of non-perturbative mode coupling terms in the effective action of the system. We supplement the above-mentioned results by obtaining them from equations of motions of the bosons and discuss their significance for systems near critical points described by time-dependent Landau-Ginzburg theories.

Pion and nucleon in two flavour QCD with unimproved Wilson fermions

We calculate pion mass, pion decay constant, PCAC quark mass and nucleon mass in two flavour lattice QCD with unimproved Wilson fermion and gauge actions. Simulations are performed using DD-HMC algorithm at two lattice spacings and two volumes for several values of the quark mass. The cutoff effects in pion mass and nucleon mass for the explored region of parameter space are found to be negligible. The chiral behaviours of pion mass, pion decay constant and quark condensate are found to be qualitatively consistent with NLO chiral perturbation theory.

Exploring autocorrelations in two-flavour Wilson Lattice QCD using DD-HMC algorithm

We perform an extensive study of autocorrelation of several observables in lattice QCD with two degenerate flavours of naive Wilson fermions and unimproved Wilson gauge action using DD-HMC algorithm. We show that (1) at a given lattice spacing, autocorrelation of topological susceptibility decreases with decreasing quark mass and autocorrelations of plaquette and Wilson loop do not increase with decreasing quark mass, (2) autocorrelation of topological susceptibility substantially increases with decreasing lattice spacing but autocorrelation of topological charge density correlator shows only mild increase and (3) increasing the size and the smearing level increase the autocorrelation of Wilson loop.

Topological susceptibility in Lattice QCD with unimproved Wilson fermions

We address a long standing problem regarding topology in lattice simulations of QCD with unimproved Wilson fermions. Earlier attempt with unimproved Wilson fermions at β=5.6 to verify the suppression of topological susceptibility with decreasing quark mass (m_q) was unable to unambiguously confirm the suppression. We carry out systematic calculations for two degenerate flavours at two different lattice spacings (β= 5.6 and 5.8). The effects of quark mass, lattice volume and the lattice spacing on the spanning of different topological sectors are presented. We unambiguously demonstrate the suppression of the topological susceptibility with decreasing quark mass, expected from chiral Ward identity and chiral perturbation theory.

Spanning of Topological sectors, charge and susceptibility with naive Wilson fermions

We study the topological charge and the topological susceptibility in lattice QCD with two degenerate flavors of naive Wilson fermions at two values of lattice spacings and different volumes, for a range of quark masses. Configurations are generated with DDHMC/HMC algorithms and smoothened with HYP smearing. We present integrated autocorrelation time for both topological charge and topological susceptibility at the two lattice spacing values studied. The spanning of different topological sectors as a function of the hopping parameter kappa is presented. The expected chiral behaviour of the topological susceptibility (including finite volume dependence) is observed.
