Dressed Fock Spaces in Gauge Theory and Gravity

Four-dimensional gauge and gravitational theories exhibit long-range interactions that require asymptotic particles to be dressed by clouds of soft photons and gravitons. Faddeev-Kulish dressings render scattering amplitudes infrared-finite, but the resulting multi-particle states do not factorise into tensor products of dressed one-particle states. We show that this loss of Fock-space factorisation is not fundamental, but reflects an inappropriate choice of infrared variables. The real soft divergence is reproduced by the Goldstone modes of asymptotic symmetries, while the Coulomb phase is reproduced by new zero modes of the radiative fields that we introduce here. In these variables, infrared-finite dressed multi-particle states admit the usual Fock-space factorisation into single-particle dressed states.

A Holographic Model for Soft Photons and Gravitons in Four Dimensions

We construct a two-dimensional action on the celestial sphere that describes the infrared sector of Abelian gauge and gravitational theories in four dimensions. In particular, we use the holographic model to reproduce (1) antipodal matching conditions for the superphaserotation and supertranslation Goldstone modes in four dimensions, (2) leading soft photon and graviton theorems, and (3) infrared factorization of amplitudes with generic dressed $in$ and $out$ states. Using (3), we reproduce the infrared divergences that plague the standard undressed amplitudes, and show that amplitudes involving Faddeev-Kulish dressed states are infrared finite. As a corollary, we use our holographic model to construct an infinite class of dressed states that give rise to infrared finite scattering amplitudes.

Long-Range Interactions in Celestial CFT

Loop corrections in QED and gravity have recently been conjectured to give rise to an infinite tower of logarithmic soft theorems governing the universal low-energy behavior of photons and gravitons. We explore the implications of this tower for celestial CFT and for the algebra of conformally soft operators. The symmetry-governed part of the tower of logarithmic soft factors is shown to exponentiate, which demonstrates that these loop effects do not represent independent multi-particle interactions, but instead are rooted in the long-range exchange of gauge bosons between pairs of hard operator insertions. We define conformally soft loop operators, and compute their operator product expansions on the celestial sphere. The associated Ward identities exhibit characteristic non-local behaviors, which reflect the pair-wise interactions between hard operator insertions mediated by gauge bosons. We comment on the implications of these results for the soft operator algebra at loop order.

Exact Infrared Triangle in Massless sQED with Long-range Interactions

The logarithmic soft photon theorem in four spacetime dimensions encodes an infinite-dimensional asymptotic symmetry which acts on massive matter as a divergent superphaserotation. Here we extend this result to massless matter which is both more subtle and surprising. We derive the charge associated to divergent superphaserotations and show that it exactly vanishes to all orders in the electromagnetic coupling. This is in agreement with the vanishing of the classical logarithmic soft photon theorem which is one-loop exact. Special care is required for massless matter due to potential collinear divergences which, as we show, do however not affect the superphaserotation charge. We furthermore compute the infrared corrections to the charge associated to the subleading tree-level soft photon theorem. As a corollary of our result, we find that the tail to the velocity kick memory due to the long-range interactions between soft electromagnetic radiation and massless matter vanishes.

Gravitational Entropy

We formulate the classical gravitational entropy of a horizon as a Noether charge that does not require the notion of a temperature, and which is applicable to horizons that are not necessarily associated with black holes. This introduces a correction to the covariant phase space formalism that accounts for the configuration-dependence of the generating vector field conjugate to the charge. The vector field is related to the proposal of Bousso that the gravitational entropy of a region is determined by the lightsheet at its boundary. We test the formula on various black hole and cosmological horizons.

The Classical Super-Rotation Infrared Triangle

The universality of gravitational scattering at low energies and large distances encoded in soft theorems and memory effects can be understood from symmetries. In four-dimensional asymptotically flat spacetimes the infinite enhancement of translations, extending the Poincar\'e group to the BMS group, is the symmetry underlying Weinberg's soft graviton theorem and the gravitational displacement memory effect. Beyond this leading infrared triangle, loop corrections alter their nature by introducing logarithms in the soft expansion and late time tails to the memory, and this persists in the classical limit. In this work we give the first complete description of an `infrared triangle' where the long-range nature of gravitational interactions is accounted for. Building on earlier results in 2403.13053 where we derived a novel conservation law associated to the infinite dimensional enhancement of Lorentz transformations to superrotations, we prove here its validity to all orders in the gravitational coupling and show that it implies the classical logarithmic soft graviton theorem of Saha-Sahoo-Sen in 1912.06413. We furthermore extend the formula for the displacement memory and its tail from particles to fields, thus completing the classical superrotation infrared triangle.

The Classical Super-Phaserotation Infrared Triangle

The universality of the logarithmic soft photon theorem in four dimensions can be traced to an infinite-dimensional asymptotic symmetry which acts as a local phase rotation on matter as we have shown in 2403.13053. Here we extend our earlier results for the charges associated to these superphaserotations to all orders in the coupling and prove that their conservation is exactly the classical logarithmic soft photon theorem discovered by Saha, Sahoo and Sen in 1912.06413. We furthermore generalize the formulae for the associated electromagnetic displacement memory and its tail from particles to scalar matter fields. This completes the classical superphaserotation infrared triangle.

Asymptotic Symmetries for Logarithmic Soft Theorems in Gauge Theory and Gravity

Gauge theories and perturbative gravity in four dimensions are governed by a tower of infinite-dimensional symmetries which arise from tree-level soft theorems. However, aside from the leading soft theorems which are all-loop exact, subleading ones receive loop corrections due to long-range infrared effects which result in new soft theorems with logarithmic dependence on the energy of the soft particle. The conjectured universality of these logarithmic soft theorems to all loop orders cries out for a symmetry interpretation. In this letter we initiate a program to compute long-range infrared corrections to the charges that generate the asymptotic symmetries in (scalar) QED and perturbative gravity. For late-time fall-offs of the electromagnetic and gravitational fields which give rise to infrared dressings for the matter fields, we derive finite charge conservation laws and show that in the quantum theory they correspond precisely to the first among the infinite tower of logarithmic soft theorems. This symmetry interpretation, by virtue of being universal and all-loop exact, is a key element for a holographic principle in spacetimes with flat asymptotics.

AdS$_2$ Holography and Effective QFT

We discuss AdS$_2$ quantum gravity from an unconventional perspective that emphasizes bulk geometry. In our approach, AdS$_2$ has no boundary, there are no divergences that require renormalization, and the dilaton of JT-gravity can be omitted altogether. The result is the standard Schwarzian theory. However, it may be advantageous that our derivation just relies on conventional AdS/CFT correspondence and effective quantum field theory. For example, it clarifies the symmetry breaking pattern. It also puts the non-compact AdS$_2$ topology on the same footing as compact Riemann surfaces.

Singular Supertranslations and Chern-Simons Theory on the Black Hole Horizon

We construct the standard and dual supertranslation charges on the future horizon of the Schwarzschild black hole, using the first-order formulation of gravity with the Holst action. The Dirac bracket algebra of standard and dual supertranslation charges is shown to exhibit a central term in the presence of singularities in the two-sphere function associated with supertranslation. We show that one can cancel this anomalous term and restore the asymptotic symmetry algebra by introducing a gravitational Chern-Simons theory on the horizon. This demonstrates that consistency of the asymptotic symmetry algebra requires a new structure on the horizon.

Holography from Singular Supertranslations on a Black Hole Horizon

We investigate the standard and dual Bondi-Metzner-Sachs (BMS) supertranslation generators on a black hole horizon and draw some conclusions about black hole physics. Recently, it has been shown that in addition to conventional BMS supertranslation symmetries, there exists an additional infinite set of magnetic asymptotic symmetries, dual BMS supertranslations, again parametrized by a function on the two-sphere. We show that the Dirac bracket between these generators exhibits an anomalous central term when one parameter function exhibits a singularity in the complex stereographical coordinates on the sphere. In order to preserve general coordinate invariance, we demonstrate that this central term can be removed by postulating a holographic gravitational Chern-Simons theory on the horizon. This indicates that for an anomaly-free theory of quantum gravity in the presence of a black hole, one should include a boundary theory on the horizon.

Effective Field Theory of Quantum Black Holes

We review and extend recent progress on the quantum description of near-extremal black holes in the language of effective quantum field theory. With black holes in Einstein-Maxwell theory as the main example, we derive the Schwarzian low energy description of the AdS$_2$ region from a spacetime point of view. We also give a concise formula for the symmetry breaking scale, we relate rotation to supersymmetry, and we discuss quantum corrections to black hole entropy.

Magnetic Soft Charges, Dual Supertranslations and 't Hooft Line Dressings

We construct the Faddeev-Kulish asymptotic states in a quantum field theory of electric and magnetic charges. We find that there are two kind of dressings: apart from the well known (electric) Wilson line dressing, there is a magnetic counterpart which can be written as a 't Hooft line operator. The 't Hooft line dressings are charged under the magnetic large gauge transformation (LGT), but are neutral under electric LGT. This is in contrast to the Faddeev-Kulish dressings of electrons, which can be written as a Wilson line operator and are charged under electric LGT but neutral under magnetic LGT. With these dressings and the corresponding construction of the coherent states, the infrared finiteness of the theory of electric and magnetic charges is guaranteed. Even in the absence of magnetic monopoles, the electric and magnetic soft modes exhibit the electromagnetic duality of vacuum Maxwell theory. Using only the asymptotic form of three-point interactions in a field theory of electric and magnetic charges, we show that the leading magnetic dressings, like the leading electric ones, are exact in the field theory of electric and magnetic charges, in accordance with a conjecture of Strominger. We then extend the construction to perturbative quantum gravity in asymptotically flat spacetime, and construct gravitational 't Hooft line dressings that are charged under dual supertranslations. The duality in the quantum theory between the electric and magnetic soft charges and their dressings is thus made manifest.

Supertranslation Hair of Schwarzschild Black Hole: A Wilson Line Perspective

We demonstrate within the quantum field theoretical framework that an asymptotic particle falling into the black hole implants soft graviton hair on the horizon, conforming with the classical proposal of Hawking, Perry and Strominger. A key ingredient to this result is the construction of gravitational Wilson line dressings of an infalling scalar field, carrying a definite horizon supertranslation charge. It is shown that a typical Schwarzschild state is degenerate, and can be labeled by different soft supertranslation hairs parametrized for radial trajectories by the mass and energy of the infalling particle and its asymptotic point of contact with the horizon. The supertranslation zero modes are also obtained in terms of zero-frequency graviton operators, and are shown to be the expected canonical partners of the linearized horizon charge that enlarge the horizon Hilbert space.

Subleading soft dressings of asymptotic states in QED and perturbative quantum gravity

We construct Faddeev-Kulish states in QED and perturbative quantum gravity to subleading order in the soft momentum expansion and to first order in the coupling constant, using the charge conservation formula of asymptotic symmetries associated with the tree-level subleading soft theorems. We demonstrate that the emission and absorption of soft photons/gravitons in dressed amplitudes vanish. The fact that no additional soft radiation may be added to a dressed amplitude supports the claim that, in the dressed state formalism, the soft and hard sectors of scattering processes are correlated. We also show that the dressed virtual amplitudes are equivalent to the infrared-finite part of the traditional amplitudes constructed using Fock states. Since there is no real soft radiation in the asymptotic Hilbert space, the dressed state formalism gives the same cross sections as the Bloch-Nordsieck method.

Soft Photon Hair on Schwarzschild Horizon from a Wilson Line Perspective

We develop a unified framework for the construction of soft dressings at boundaries of spacetime, such as the null infinity of Minkowski spacetime and the horizon of a Schwarzschild black hole. The construction is based on an old proposal of Mandelstam for quantizing QED and considers matter fields dressed by Wilson lines. Along time-like paths, the Wilson lines puncturing the boundary are the analogs of flat space Faddeev-Kulish dressings. We focus on the Schwarzschild black hole where our framework provides a quantum-field-theoretical perspective of the Hawking-Perry-Strominger viewpoint that black holes carry soft hair, through a study of the Wilson line dressings, localized on the horizon.

BMS Supertranslation Symmetry Implies Faddeev-Kulish Amplitudes

We show explicitly that, among the scattering amplitudes constructed from eigenstates of the BMS supertranslation charge, the ones that conserve this charge, are equal to those constructed from Faddeev-Kulish states. Thus, Faddeev-Kulish states naturally arise as a consequence of the asymptotic symmetries of perturbative gravity and all charge conserving amplitudes are infrared finite. In the process we show an important feature of the Faddeev-Kulish clouds dressing the external hard particles: these clouds can be moved from the incoming states to the outgoing ones, and vice-versa, without changing the infrared finiteness properties of S matrix elements. We also apply our discussion to the problem of the decoherence of momentum configurations of hard particles due to soft boson effects.

Asymptotic Dynamics in Perturbative Quantum Gravity and BMS Supertranslations

Recently it has been shown that infrared divergences in the conventional S-matrix elements of gauge and gravitational theories arise from a violation of the conservation laws associated with large gauge symmetries. These infrared divergences can be cured by using the Faddeev-Kulish (FK) asymptotic states as the basis for S-matrix elements. Motivated by this connection, we study the action of BMS supertranslations on the FK asymptotic states of perturbative quantum gravity. We compute the BMS charge of the FK states and show that it characterizes the superselection sector to which the state belongs. Conservation of the BMS charge then implies that there is no transition between different superselection sectors, hence showing that the FK graviton clouds implement the necessary vacuum transition induced by the scattering process.
