Revisiting Semantic Role Labeling: Efficient Structured Inference with Dependency-Informed Analysis

Semantic Role Labeling (SRL) provides an explicit representation of predicate-argument structure, capturing linguistically grounded relations such as who did what to whom. While recent NLP progress has been dominated by large language models (LLMs), these systems often rely on implicit semantic representations, often lacking explicit structural constraints and systematic explanatory mechanisms. Traditionally, SRL systems have often relied on AllenNLP; however, the framework entered maintenance mode in December 2022, limiting compatibility with evolving encoder architectures and modern inference requirements. We revisit structured SRL modeling, introducing a modernized encoder-based framework that preserves explicit predicate-argument structure while enabling inference 10 times faster. Using BERT-base, the model attains comparable predictive performance, and RoBERTa and DeBERTa further improve F1 performance within the same framework. We adopt a dependency-informed diagnostic methodology to characterize span-level inconsistencies and conduct a representation-level analysis of LLM behavior under dependency-informed structural signals. Results indicate that dependency cues primarily improve structural stability. Finally, we illustrate how the framework's explicit predicate-argument structure can support multilingual SRL projection as a downstream application.

Semantic Similarity is a Spurious Measure of Comic Understanding: Lessons Learned from Hallucinations in a Benchmarking Experiment

A system that enables blind or visually impaired users to access comics/manga would introduce a new medium of storytelling to this community. However, no such system currently exists. Generative vision-language models (VLMs) have shown promise in describing images and understanding comics, but most research on comic understanding is limited to panel-level analysis. To fully support blind and visually impaired users, greater attention must be paid to page-level understanding and interpretation. In this work, we present a preliminary benchmark of VLM performance on comic interpretation tasks. We identify and categorize hallucinations that emerge during this process, organizing them into generalized object-hallucination taxonomies. We conclude with guidance on future research, emphasizing hallucination mitigation and improved data curation for comic interpretation.

Predicting Depressive Symptoms through Emotion Pairs within Asian American Families

Studies on intergenerational relationships between parents and children in Asian American families highlight their impact on mental health and well-being. This study investigates the role of ambivalent emotions in online narratives shared by Asian and Asian American children on the subreddit, r/Asianparentstories. By employing a BERT-based model to detect emotion at the sentence level and depressive symptoms at the post level, we analyze mixed feelings to better understand how they predict depressive symptoms. First, among 28 detectable, eight (realization, approval, sadness, anger, curiosity, annoyance, disappointment, disapproval) comprise over 50%, exhibiting significant co-occurrence among themselves and with other emotions. Second, we find the co-occurrence of multiple emotions, indicating that emotions in a single post are not limited to consistently positive or negative feelings. Finally, our findings indicate that while negative emotion pairs (e.g., confusion-grief, anger-grief) are associated with depressive symptoms, positive emotion pairs (e.g., admiration-realization, amusement-joy) negatively correlate with depressive symptoms, and combinations of ambivalent emotions indicate varied results in predicting depressive symptoms. These findings highlight the importance of automated emotion classification and the need to consider emotional ambivalence, which holds practical and clinical implications for understanding the dynamics of parent-child relationships.

Beyond Stereotypes: Exploring How Minority College Students Experience Stigma on Reddit

Minority college students face unique challenges shaped by their identities based on their gender/sexual orientation, race, religion, and academic institutions, which influence their academic and social experiences. Although research has highlighted the challenges faced by individual minority groups, the stigma process-labeling, stereotyping, separation, status loss, and discrimination-that underpin these experiences remains underexamined, particularly in the online spaces where college students are highly active. We address these gaps by examining posts on subreddit, r/college, as indicators for stigma processes, our approach applies a Stereotype-BERT model, including stance toward each stereotype. We extend the stereotype model to encompass status loss and discrimination by using semantic distance with their reference sentences. Our analyses show that professional indicated posts are primarily labeled under the stereotyping stage, whereas posts indicating racial are highly represented in status loss and discrimination. Intersectional identified posts are more frequently associated with status loss and discrimination. The findings of this study highlight the need for multifaceted intersectional approaches to identifying stigma, which subsequently serve as indicators to promote equity for minority groups, especially racial minorities and those experiencing compounded vulnerabilities due to intersecting identities.

DAHRS: Divergence-Aware Hallucination-Remediated SRL Projection

Semantic role labeling (SRL) enriches many downstream applications, e.g., machine translation, question answering, summarization, and stance/belief detection. However, building multilingual SRL models is challenging due to the scarcity of semantically annotated corpora for multiple languages. Moreover, state-of-the-art SRL projection (XSRL) based on large language models (LLMs) yields output that is riddled with spurious role labels. Remediation of such hallucinations is not straightforward due to the lack of explainability of LLMs. We show that hallucinated role labels are related to naturally occurring divergence types that interfere with initial alignments. We implement Divergence-Aware Hallucination-Remediated SRL projection (DAHRS), leveraging linguistically-informed alignment remediation followed by greedy First-Come First-Assign (FCFA) SRL projection. DAHRS improves the accuracy of SRL projection without additional transformer-based machinery, beating XSRL in both human and automatic comparisons, and advancing beyond headwords to accommodate phrase-level SRL projection (e.g., EN-FR, EN-ES). Using CoNLL-2009 as our ground truth, we achieve a higher word-level F1 over XSRL: 87.6% vs. 77.3% (EN-FR) and 89.0% vs. 82.7% (EN-ES). Human phrase-level assessments yield 89.1% (EN-FR) and 91.0% (EN-ES). We also define a divergence metric to adapt our approach to other language pairs (e.g., English-Tagalog).

DETQUS: Decomposition-Enhanced Transformers for QUery-focused Summarization

Query-focused tabular summarization is an emerging task in table-to-text generation that synthesizes a summary response from tabular data based on user queries. Traditional transformer-based approaches face challenges due to token limitations and the complexity of reasoning over large tables. To address these challenges, we introduce DETQUS (Decomposition-Enhanced Transformers for QUery-focused Summarization), a system designed to improve summarization accuracy by leveraging tabular decomposition alongside a fine-tuned encoder-decoder model. DETQUS employs a large language model to selectively reduce table size, retaining only query-relevant columns while preserving essential information. This strategy enables more efficient processing of large tables and enhances summary quality. Our approach, equipped with table-based QA model Omnitab, achieves a ROUGE-L score of 0.4437, outperforming the previous state-of-the-art REFACTOR model (ROUGE-L: 0.422). These results highlight DETQUS as a scalable and effective solution for query-focused tabular summarization, offering a structured alternative to more complex architectures.

Information Seeking and Communication among International Students on Reddit

This study examines the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on information-seeking behaviors among international students, with a focus on the r/f1visa subreddit. Our study indicates a considerable rise in the number of users posting more than one question during the pandemic. Those asking recurring questions demonstrate more active involvement in communication, suggesting a continuous pursuit of knowledge. Furthermore, the thematic focus has shifted from questions about jobs before COVID-19 to concerns about finances, school preparations, and taxes during COVID-19. These findings carry implications for support policymaking, highlighting the importance of delivering timely and relevant information to meet the evolving needs of international students. To enhance international students' understanding and navigation of this dynamic environment, future research in this field is necessary.

Balancing Transparency and Accuracy: A Comparative Analysis of Rule-Based and Deep Learning Models in Political Bias Classification

The unchecked spread of digital information, combined with increasing political polarization and the tendency of individuals to isolate themselves from opposing political viewpoints, has driven researchers to develop systems for automatically detecting political bias in media. This trend has been further fueled by discussions on social media. We explore methods for categorizing bias in US news articles, comparing rule-based and deep learning approaches. The study highlights the sensitivity of modern self-learning systems to unconstrained data ingestion, while reconsidering the strengths of traditional rule-based systems. Applying both models to left-leaning (CNN) and right-leaning (FOX) news articles, we assess their effectiveness on data beyond the original training and test sets.This analysis highlights each model's accuracy, offers a framework for exploring deep-learning explainability, and sheds light on political bias in US news media. We contrast the opaque architecture of a deep learning model with the transparency of a linguistically informed rule-based model, showing that the rule-based model performs consistently across different data conditions and offers greater transparency, whereas the deep learning model is dependent on the training set and struggles with unseen data.

AMREx: AMR for Explainable Fact Verification

With the advent of social media networks and the vast amount of information circulating through them, automatic fact verification is an essential component to prevent the spread of misinformation. It is even more useful to have fact verification systems that provide explanations along with their classifications to ensure accurate predictions. To address both of these requirements, we implement AMREx, an Abstract Meaning Representation (AMR)-based veracity prediction and explanation system for fact verification using a combination of Smatch, an AMR evaluation metric to measure meaning containment and textual similarity, and demonstrate its effectiveness in producing partially explainable justifications using two community standard fact verification datasets, FEVER and AVeriTeC. AMREx surpasses the AVeriTec baseline accuracy showing the effectiveness of our approach for real-world claim verification. It follows an interpretable pipeline and returns an explainable AMR node mapping to clarify the system's veracity predictions when applicable. We further demonstrate that AMREx output can be used to prompt LLMs to generate natural-language explanations using the AMR mappings as a guide to lessen the probability of hallucinations.

Modeling Bilingual Sentence Processing: Evaluating RNN and Transformer Architectures for Cross-Language Structural Priming

This study evaluates the performance of Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) and Transformer models in replicating cross-language structural priming, a key indicator of abstract grammatical representations in human language processing. Focusing on Chinese-English priming, which involves two typologically distinct languages, we examine how these models handle the robust phenomenon of structural priming, where exposure to a particular sentence structure increases the likelihood of selecting a similar structure subsequently. Our findings indicate that transformers outperform RNNs in generating primed sentence structures, with accuracy rates that exceed 25.84\% to 33. 33\%. This challenges the conventional belief that human sentence processing primarily involves recurrent and immediate processing and suggests a role for cue-based retrieval mechanisms. This work contributes to our understanding of how computational models may reflect human cognitive processes across diverse language families.
