Massive Compact Halo Objects from the Relics of the Cosmic Quark-Hadron Transition

The existence of compact gravitational lenses, with masses around 0.5 (M_{\odot}), has been reported in the halo of the Milky Way. The nature of these dark lenses is as yet obscure, particularly because these objects have masses well above the threshold for nuclear fusion. In this work, we show that they find a natural explanation as being the evolutionary product of the metastable false vacuum domains (the so-called strange quark nuggets) formed in a first order cosmic quark-hadron transition.

Shadowing in photo-production : role of in-medium hadrons

We study the effects of in-medium hadronic properties on shadowing in photon-nucleus interactions in Glauber model as well as in the multiple scattering approach. A reasonable agreement with the experimental data is obtained in a scenario of downward spectral shift of the hadrons. Shadowing is found to be insensitive to the broadening of the spectral functions. An impact parameter dependent analysis of shadowing might shed more light on the role of in-medium properties of hadrons.

The low-energy nuclear density of states and the saddle point approximation

The nuclear density of states plays an important role in nuclear reactions. At high energies, above a few MeV, the nuclear density of states is well described by a formula that depends on the smooth single particle density of states at the Fermi surface, the nuclear shell correction and the pairing energy. In this paper we present an analysis of the low energy behaviour of the nuclear density of states using the saddle point approximation and extensions to it. Furthermore, we prescribe a simple parabolic form for excitation energy, in the low energy limit, which may facilitate an easy computation of level densities.

Strange quark matter in cosmic ray flux and exotic events

There have been several reports of exotic nuclear fragments, with highly unusual charge to mass ratio, in cosmic ray experiments. Although there exist experimental uncertainties which make them, at best, only candidate "exotic" events, it is important to understand what they could be, if they are eventually confirmed. Among other possible explanations, some authors have interpreted them to be lumps of strange quark matter (strangelets). A major problem with such an interpretation is that to reach the earth's surface, they must possess an unusually high penetrability through the terrestrial atmosphere. We show that a recently proposed mechanism for the propagation of strangelets through the earth's atmosphere, together with a proper account of charge capture and ionisation loss, would solve this problem. We also argue that this could lead to viable strategies for definitive detection of strange quark matter in cosmic ray flux using a ground based large area array of passive detectors.

Can cosmic strangelets reach the earth?

The mechanism for the propagation of strangelets with low baryon number through the atmosphere of the Earth has been explored. It has been shown that under suitable initial conditions, such strangelets may indeed reach depths near mountain altitudes with mass numbers and charges close to the observed values in cosmic ray experiments.

The Cosmological Quark-Hadron Transition and Massive Compact Halo Objects

One of the abiding mysteries in the so-called standard cosmological model is the nature of the dark matter. It is universally accepted that there is an abundance of matter in the universe which is non-luminous, due to their very weak interaction, if at all, with the other forms of matter, excepting of course the gravitational attraction. Speculations as to the nature of dark matter are numerous, often bordering on exotics, and searches for such exotic matter is a very active field of astroparticle physics at the dawn of the new century. Nevertheless, in recent years, there has been experimental evidence for at least one form of dark matter - the massive compact halo objects detected through gravitational microlensing effects proposed by Paczynski some years ago. To date, no clear consensus as to what these objects, referred to in the literature as well as in the following by the acronym MACHO, are made of; for a brief discussion of some of the suggestions, see below. In this work, we show that they find a natural explanation as leftover relics from the putative first order cosmic quark - hadron phase transition that is predicted by the standard model of particle interactions to have occurred during the microsecond epoch of the early universe.

$ρ$ - nucleus bound states in Walecka model

Possible formation of $ρ$ nucleus bound state is studied in the framework of Walecka model. The bound states are found in different nuclei ranging from $^3He$ to $^{208}Pb$. These bound states may have a direct bearing on the recent experiments on the photoproduction of $ρ$ meson in the nuclear medium.

The Chandrasekhar limit for quark stars

The Chandrasekhar limit for quark stars is evaluated from simple energy balance relations, as proposed by Landau for white dwarfs or neutron stars. It has been found that the limit for quark stars depends on, in addition to the fundamental constants, the Bag constant.

$ρ$-mass Modification in $He^3$ - a Signal of Restoration of Chiral Symmetry or Test for Nuclear Matter Models ?

Two recent experiments have demonstrated that the effective $ρ$-mass in nuclear medium, as extracted from the $^3He(γ, π^+ π^-)$ reaction, is substantially reduced. This has been advocated as an indication of partial restoration of chiral symmetry in nuclear matter. We show that even in the absence of chiral symmetry, effective mean field nuclear matter models can explain these findings quantitatively.

Effect of In-Medium Meson Masses on Nuclear Matter Properties

Masses of hadrons (baryons as well as mesons) are modified in the nuclear medium because of their interactions. In this paper we investigate the effect of in-medium meson masses on the properties of the nuclear matter. The calculations are performed in the Walecka model. We find that with the inclusion of meson mass modification, the computed equation of state becomes softer. We also find that the decrease in the nucleon as well as meson masses in the medium is smaller than that obtained in the case when the in-medium meson masses are not taken into account.

Stochastic Pionisation in Hot Quark-Gluon Matter

We present a microscopic approach to dynamical pionisation of the hot quark-gluon matter formed in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions. The time evolution of the system is described assuming that quarks undergo Brownian motion in a thermal bath provided by the gluons. The rate of hadronization as well as the time dependence of the temperature of the system are seen to be quite sensitive to the QCD $Λ$ parameter. Even in a non-equilibrium scenario, we find that there appears a clear hint of a first order phase transition.

Pion and Kaon dissociation in hot quark medium

Pion and kaon dissociation in a medium of hot quark matter is studied in the Nambu Jona-Lasinio model. The decay width of pion and kaon are found to be large but finite at temperatures much higher than the so called critical temperature of chiral or deconfinement transition, kaon decay width being larger. Consequently, pions and even kaons (with a lower density compared to pions) should coexist with quarks and gluons at such high temperatures. The implication of the above result in the study of Quark-Gluon plasma is discussed.

The decay width of pion is found to be large but finite at temperatures much higher than the so called critical temperature of chiral or deconfinement transition. Consequently, pions should coexist with quarks and gluons at such high temperatures. The result is in agreement with the lattice calculations. The implication of the above result in the study of Quark-Gluon plasma is discussed.

Dihyperon in Chiral Colour Dielectric Model

The mass of dihyperon with spin, parity $J^π=0^{+}$ and isospin $I = 0$ is calculated in the framework of Chiral colour dielectric model. The wave function of the dihyperon is expressed as a product of two colour-singlet baryon clusters. Thus the quark wave functions within the cluster are antisymmetric. Appropriate operators are then used to antisymmetrize inter-cluster quark wave functions. The radial part of the quark wavefunctions are obtained by solving the the quark and dielectric field equations of motion obtained in the Colour dielectric model. The mass of the dihyperon is computed by including the colour magnetic energy as well as the energy due to meson interaction. The recoil correction to the dihyperon mass is incorporated by Peierls-Yoccoz technique. We find that the mass of the dihyperon is smaller than the $Λ-Λ$ threshold by over 100 MeV. The implications of our results on the present day relativistic heavy ion experiments is discussed.
