Anomalous Hall effect in Weyl semimetal half Heusler compounds RPtBi (R = Gd and Nd)

Topological materials ranging from topological insulators to Weyl and Dirac semimetals form one of the most exciting current fields in condensed-matter research. Many half-Heusler compounds, RPtBi (R= rare earth) have been theoretically predicted to be topological semimetals. Among various topological attributes envisaged in RPtBi, topological surface states, chiral anomaly and planar Hall effect have been observed experimentally. Here, we report on an unusual intrinsic anomalous Hall effect (AHE) in the antiferromagnetic Heusler Weyl semimetal compounds GdPtBi and NdPtBi that is observed over a wide temperature range. In particular, GdPtBi exhibits an anomalous Hall conductivity of up to 60 ohm-1cm-1 and an anomalous Hall angle as large as 23%. Muon spin resonance (mu-SR) studies of GdPtBi indicate a sharp antiferromagnetic transition (T_N) at 9 K without any noticeable magnetic correlations above T_N. Our studies indicate that Weyl points in these half-Heuslers are induced by a magnetic field via exchange-splitting of the electronic bands at or near to the Fermi energy which is the source of the chiral anomaly and the AHE.

Compressive sensing based privacy for fall detection

Fall detection holds immense importance in the field of healthcare, where timely detection allows for instant medical assistance. In this context, we propose a 3D ConvNet architecture which consists of 3D Inception modules for fall detection. The proposed architecture is a custom version of Inflated 3D (I3D) architecture, that takes compressed measurements of video sequence as spatio-temporal input, obtained from compressive sensing framework, rather than video sequence as input, as in the case of I3D convolutional neural network. This is adopted since privacy raises a huge concern for patients being monitored through these RGB cameras. The proposed framework for fall detection is flexible enough with respect to a wide variety of measurement matrices. Ten action classes randomly selected from Kinetics-400 with no fall examples, are employed to train our 3D ConvNet post compressive sensing with different types of sensing matrices on the original video clips. Our results show that 3D ConvNet performance remains unchanged with different sensing matrices. Also, the performance obtained with Kinetics pre-trained 3D ConvNet on compressively sensed fall videos from benchmark datasets is better than the state-of-the-art techniques.

HCA-DBSCAN: HyperCube Accelerated Density Based Spatial Clustering for Applications with Noise

Density-based clustering has found numerous applications across various domains. The Density-Based Spatial Clustering of Applications with Noise (DBSCAN) algorithm is capable of finding clusters of varied shapes that are not linearly separable, at the same time it is not sensitive to outliers in the data. Combined with the fact that the number of clusters in the data are not required apriori makes DBSCAN really powerfully. Slower performance (O(n2)) limits its applications. In this work, we present a new clustering algorithm, the HyperCube Accelerated DBSCAN(HCA-DBSCAN) which uses a combination of distance-based aggregation by overlaying the data with customized grids. We use representative points to reduce the number of comparisons that need to be computed. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm achieves a significant run time speedup of up to 58.27% when compared to other improvements that try to reduce the time complexity of theDBSCAN algorithm

Exotic magnetic behaviour and evidence of cluster glass and Griffiths like phase in Heusler alloys Fe2-xMnxCrAl

We present a detailed study of structural, magnetic and thermodynamic properties of a series of Heusler alloys Fe2-xMnxCrAl (x=0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75 and 1). Structural investigation of this series is carried out using high resolution synchrotron X-ray diffraction. Results suggest that with increasing Mn concentration, the L21 structure of Fe2CrAl is destabilized. The DC magnetization results show a decrement in paramagnetic (PM) to ferromagnetic (FM) phase transition temperature (TC) with increasing Mn concentration. From the systematic analysis of magnetic memory effect, heat capacity, time dependent magnetization, and DC field dependent AC susceptibility studies it is observed that, Fe2CrAl exhibits cluster glass(CG)-like transition approximately at 3.9 K (Tf2). The alloys, Fe1.75Mn0.25CrAl and Fe1.5Mn0.5CrAl exhibit double CG-like transitions near Tf1~22 K, Tf2~4.2 K and Tf1~30.4 K, Tf2~9.5 K respectively, however, in Fe1.25Mn0.75CrAl, a single CG-like transition is noted at Tf2~11.5 K below TC. Interestingly, FeMnCrAl shows the absence of long ranged magnetic ordering and this alloy undergoes three CG-like transitions at ~ 22 K (Tf*), 16.6 K (Tf1) and 11 K (Tf2). At high temperatures, a detailed analysis of temperature response of inverse DC susceptibility clearly reveals the observation of Griffiths phase (GP) above 300 K (T*) in Fe2CrAl and this phase persists with Mn concentration with a decrement in T*.

Simultaneous Eulerian-Lagrangian velocity measurements of particulate pipe flow in transitional regime

We present a unique pipe flow rig capable where simultaneous particle tracking and flow velocity measurements in a dilute, neutrally buoyant particulate pipe flow in regimes of transition to turbulence. The flow consists of solid glass spheres for the disperse phase, and a density-matching fluid for the carrier phase. The measurements are conducted using a bespoke, combined 2D PIV/ PTV technique. The technique takes advantage of a phase discrimination approach that involves separating the disperse and carrier phases based on their respective image characteristics. Our results show that the rig and the technique it implements can be employed to study transitional particulate pipe flows at dilute concentration.

Exploring the best scenario for understanding the high temperature thermoelectric behaviour of Fe2VAl

Heusler-type Fe2VAl compound is a promising thermoelectric candidate with non-magnetic ground state. The present work investigates the Seebeck coefficient (S) of Fe2VAl in the temperature region 300 to 620 K with the help of experimental and theoretical tools. The experimental value of S is observed -130 μV/K at 300 K. Afterthat, the magnitude of S decreases gradually as the temperature increases. At T = 620 K, the value of S is found to be -26 μV/K. In order to understand the behaviour of the experimentally observed S value, the band-structure and density of states calculations are performed by using LDA, PBE, PBEsol, mBJ and SCAN within density functional theory. All the above mentioned exchange-correlation (XC) functionals (except mBJ) predict the semi-metal like behaviour of the compound, whereas the mBJ gives the indirect band gap of 0.22 eV having the well agreement with experimentally observed value. The temperature dependence of S for Fe2VAl is also calculated with the help of all the five mentioned functionals individually. The best XC functional is investigated for searching the new thermoelectric materials by taking Fe2VAl as a case example through this study. The best matching between experimental and calculated values of S as a function of temperature is observed by setting the mBJ band gap with the band-structure of PBEsol or SCAN. Therefore, the present study suggests that the band-structure of PBEsol or SCAN with mBJ band gap can be used for searching the new thermoelectric materials.

Adaptive modulation in Ni2Mn1.4In0.6 magnetic shape memory Heusler alloy

The origin of incommensurate structural modulation in Ni-Mn based Heusler type magnetic shape memory alloys (MSMAs) is still an unresolved issue inspite of intense focus on this due to its role in the magnetic field induced ultra-high strains. In the archetypal MSMA Ni2MnGa, the observation of non-uniform displacement of atoms from their mean positions in the modulated martensite phase, premartensite phase and charge density wave as well as the presence of phason broadening of satellite peaks have been taken in support of the electronic instability model linked with a soft acoustic phonon. We present here results of a combined high resolution synchrotron x-ray powder diffraction (SXRPD) and neutron powder diffraction (NPD) study on Ni2Mn1.4In0.6 using (3+1)D superspace group approach, which reveal not only uniform atomic displacements in the modulated structure of the martensite phase with physically acceptable ordered magnetic moments in the antiferromagnetic phase at low temperatures but also the absence of any premartensite phase and phason broadening of the satellite peaks. Our HRTEM studies and first principles calculations of the ground state also support uniform atomic displacements predicted by powder diffraction studies. All these observations suggest that the structural modulation in the martensite phase of Ni2Mn1.4In0.6 MSMA can be explained in terms of the adaptive phase model. The present study underlines the importance of superspace group analysis using complimentary SXRPD and NPD in understanding the physics of the origin of modulation as well as the magnetic and the modulated ground states of the Heusler type MSMAs. Our work also highlights the fact that the mechanism responsible for the origin of modulated structure in different Ni-Mn based MSMAs may not be universal and it must be investigated thoroughly in different alloy compositions.

Minimizing hysteresis in martensite phase transforming magnetocaloric Heusler alloys

The large magnetocaloric effect in Heusler alloys showing martensite phase transformation puts them forward as efficient materials for magnetic refrigeration. However, irreversibility of the magnetocaloric cooling cycle is a major challenge for real applications. This irreversibility is directly linked to the thermal hysteresis at the first-order martensite phase transition. Therefore, minimizing the hysteresis is essential in order to achieve reversibility. Here we show a large reduction in the thermal hysteresis at the martensite transition in the Ni$_{2}$Mn$_{1.4}$In$_{0.6}$ and Ni$_{1.8}$Co$_{0.2}$Mn$_{1.4}$In$_{0.6}$ Heusler alloys upon the application of hydrostatic pressure. Our pressure dependent X-ray diffraction study on Ni$_{2}$Mn$_{1.4}$In$_{0.6}$ reveals that with increasing pressure the lattice parameters of the two crystallographic phases (austenite and martensite) change in such a way that they increasingly satisfy the geometric compatibility (co-factor) condition. These results provide an opportunity to overcome the hysteresis problem and hence the irreversible behavior in Heusler materials using pressure as an external parameter.

Gradual pressure-induced change in the magnetic structure of the non-collinear antiferromagnet Mn$_3$Ge

By means of powder neutron diffraction we investigate changes in the magnetic structure of the coplanar non-collinear antiferromagnet Mn$_3$Ge caused by an application of hydrostatic pressure up to 5\phantom{ }GPa. At ambient conditions the kagomé layers of Mn atoms in Mn$_3$Ge order in a triangular 120$^{\circ}$ spin structure. Under high pressure the spins acquire a uniform out-of-plane canting, gradually transforming the magnetic texture to a non-coplanar configuration. With increasing pressure the canted structure fully transforms into the collinear ferromagnetic one. We observed that magnetic order is accompanied by a noticeable magnetoelastic effect, namely, spontaneous magnetostriction. The latter induces an in-plane magnetostrain of the hexagonal unit cell at ambient pressure and flips to an out-of-plane strain at high pressures in accordance with the change of the magnetic structure.

Co$_{2}$PtGa: A promising magnetic shape memory alloy with high martensite transition temperature

In the present work, a combined theoretical and experimental study on Co$_{2}$PtGa Heusler alloy shows that it exhibits a martensite transition around 1320 K with a small thermal hysteresis (10 K). Dynamical stability of Co$_2$PtGa in the tetragonal phase has been established by the theoretically calculated phonon dispersion curves. Magnetization measurements suggest that this alloy is a ferromagnetic material with a saturation magnetic moment of 2.83 $μ_B$/f.u. at 2 K, which is in excellent agreement with the value obtained from \textit{ab-initio} calculations (2.87 $μ_B$/f.u.). Our present study demonstrates that Co$_{2}$PtGa is a promising material for high temperature magnetic shape memory application.

Robust Bain distortion in the premartensite phase of platinum substituted Ni2MnGa magnetic shape memory alloy

The premartensite phase of shape memory and magnetic shape memory alloys (MSMAs) is believed to be a precursor state of the martensite phase with preserved austenite phase symmetry. The thermodynamic stability of the premartensite phase and its relation to the martensitic phase is still an unresolved issue, even though it is critical to the understanding of the functional properties of MSMAs. We present here unambiguous evidence for macroscopic symmetry breaking leading to robust Bain distortion in the premartensite phase of 10% Pt substituted Ni2MnGa. We show that the robust Bain distorted premartensite (T2) phase results from another premartensite (T1) phase with preserved cubic-like symmetry through an isostructural phase transition. The T2 phase finally transforms to the martensite phase with additional Bain distortion on further cooling. Our results demonstrate that the premartensite phase should not be considered as a precursor state with the preserved symmetry of the cubic austenite phase.

Multiple Dirac cones at the surface of the topological metal LaBi

The rare-earth monopnictide LaBi exhibits exotic magneto-transport properties including an extremely large and anisotropic magnetoresistance. Experimental evidence for topological surface states is still missing although band inversions have been postulated to induce a topological phase in LaBi. By employing angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) in conjunction with $ab~initio$ calculations, we have revealed the existence of surface states of LaBi through the observation of three Dirac cones: two coexist at the corners and one appears at the center of the Brillouin zone. The odd number of surface Dirac cones is a direct consequence of the odd number of band inversions in the bulk band structure, thereby proving that LaBi is a topological, compensated semi-metal, which is equivalent to a time-reversal invariant topological insulator. Our findings provide insight into the topological surface states of LaBi's semi-metallicity and related magneto-transport properties.

Is Stack Overflow Overflowing With Questions and Tags

Programming question and answer (Q & A) websites, such as Quora, Stack Overflow, and Yahoo! Answer etc. helps us to understand the programming concepts easily and quickly in a way that has been tested and applied by many software developers. Stack Overflow is one of the most frequently used programming Q\&A website where the questions and answers posted are presently analyzed manually, which requires a huge amount of time and resource. To save the effort, we present a topic modeling based technique to analyze the words of the original texts to discover the themes that run through them. We also propose a method to automate the process of reviewing the quality of questions on Stack Overflow dataset in order to avoid ballooning the stack overflow with insignificant questions. The proposed method also recommends the appropriate tags for the new post, which averts the creation of unnecessary tags on Stack Overflow.

Is That Twitter Hashtag Worth Reading

Online social media such as Twitter, Facebook, Wikis and Linkedin have made a great impact on the way we consume information in our day to day life. Now it has become increasingly important that we come across appropriate content from the social media to avoid information explosion. In case of Twitter, popular information can be tracked using hashtags. Studying the characteristics of tweets containing hashtags becomes important for a number of tasks, such as breaking news detection, personalized message recommendation, friends recommendation, and sentiment analysis among others. In this paper, we have analyzed Twitter data based on trending hashtags, which is widely used nowadays. We have used event based hashtags to know users' thoughts on those events and to decide whether the rest of the users might find it interesting or not. We have used topic modeling, which reveals the hidden thematic structure of the documents (tweets in this case) in addition to sentiment analysis in exploring and summarizing the content of the documents. A technique to find the interestingness of event based twitter hashtag and the associated sentiment has been proposed. The proposed technique helps twitter follower to read, relevant and interesting hashtag.

Premartensite to martensite transition and its implications on the origin of modulation in Ni2MnGa ferromagnetic shape memory alloy

We present here results of temperature dependent high resolution synchrotron x-ray powder diffraction study of sequence of phase transitions in Ni2MnGa. Our results show that the incommensurate martensite phase results from the incommensurate premartensite phase, and not from the austenite phase assumed in the adaptive phase model. The premartensite phase transforms to the martensite phase through a first order phase transition with coexistence of the two phases in a broad temperature interval (~40K), discontinuous change in the unit cell volume as also in the modulation wave vector across the transition temperature and considerable thermal hysteresis in the characteristic transition temperatures. The temperature variation of the modulation wave vector q shows smooth analytic behaviour with no evidence for any devilish plateau corresponding to an intermediate or ground state commensurate lock-in phases. The existence of the incommensurate 7M like modulated structure down to 5K suggests that the incommensurate 7M like modulation is the ground state of Ni2MnGa and not the Bain distorted tetragonal L10 phase or any other lock-in phase with a commensurate modulation. These findings can be explained within the framework of the soft phonon model.

Residual stress induced stabilization of martensite phase and its effect on the magneto-structural transition in Mn rich Ni-Mn-In/Ga magnetic shape memory alloys

The irreversibility of the martensite transition in magnetic shape memory alloys (MSMAs) with respect to external magnetic field is one of the biggest challenges that limits their application as giant caloric materials. This transition is a magneto-structural transition that is accompanied with a steep drop in magnetization (i.e., 'delta M') around the martensite start temperature (Ms) due to the lower magnetization of the martensite phase. In this communication, we show that 'delta M' around Ms in Mn rich Ni-Mn based MSMAs gets suppressed by two orders of magnitude in crushed powders due to the stabilization of the martensite phase at temperatures well above the Ms and the austenite finish (Af) temperatures due to residual stresses. Analysis of the intensities and the FWHM of the x-ray powder diffraction patterns reveals stabilized martensite phase fractions as 97, 75 and 90% with corresponding residual microstrains as 5.4, 5.6 and 3% in crushed powders of the three different Mn rich Ni-Mn alloys, namely, Mn1.8Ni1.8In0.4, Mn1.75Ni1.25Ga and Mn1.9Ni1.1Ga, respectively. Even after annealing at 773 K, the residual stress stabilised martensite phase does not fully revert to the equilibrium cubic austenite phase as the magneto-structural transition is only partially restored with reduced value of 'delta M'. Our results have very significant bearing on application of such alloys as inverse magnetocaloric and barocaloric materials.

Large ground state magnetic moment and magnetocaloric effect in Ni2Mn1.4In0.6

A large conventional magnetocaloric effect at the second order magnetic transition in cubic Ni2Mn1.4In0.6 Heusler alloy is reported. The isothermal magnetization at 2K shows a huge ground state magnetic moment of about 6.17 μB/f.u. The theoretical calculations show that the origin of the large magnetic moment in cubic Ni2Mn1.4In0.6 results from the strong ferromagnetic interaction between Mn- Ni and Mn-Mn sublattices. The experimental magnetic moment is in excellent agreement with the moment calculated from the theory. The large magnetic moment gives rise to considerably high adiabatic temperature and entropy changes at the magnetic transition. The present study opens up the possibility to explore cubic Heusler alloys for magnetocaloric applications.

Incommensurate modulations in stoichiometric Ni2MnGa ferromagnetic shape memory alloy: An overview

This article presents a brief overview of our recent work on the nature of long period modulation in the premartensite and martensite phases of Ni2MnGa ferromagnetic shape memory alloy using high resolution synchrotron x-ray powder diffraction patterns. The commensurate structure model using the Pnnm space group is unable to account for the peak positions of the satellite reflections that appear due to modulations correctly. LeBail and Rietveld refinements using the (3+1)-D super space group $Immm(00γ)s00$ show that the peak positions of all the reflections, including the satellites, can be explained satisfactorily using incommensurate modulations for both the premartensite and martensite phases. The incommensurate modulation vectors are found to be q= 0.33761(5)c* = (1/3+$δ$1)c* and 0.43160(3)c*= (3/7+$δ$2)c*, where $δ$1 and $δ$2 are the degrees of incommensuration for the premartensite and martensite phases, respectively. The periodicity of the closest rational approximant of the premartensite and martensite phases are confirmed to be 3M and 7M, respectively, in agreement with single crystal diffraction results.
