CP-odd weak basis invariants and texture zeros

We construct the CP-odd weak basis invariants from the neutrino mass matrix in a weak basis in which the charged lepton mass matrix is diagonal and find the necessary and sufficient conditions for CP conservation. We study the interrelationships between different CP-odd weak basis invariants to examine their implications for the Dirac and Majorana type CP violating phases for the phenomenologically allowed Frampton-Glashow-Marfatia texture zero structures of the neutrino mass matrix.

Magnetically induced electronic ferroelectricity in half-doped manganites

Using a joint approach of density functional theory and model calculations, we demonstrate that a prototypical charge ordered half-doped manganite, La$_{1/2}$Ca$_{1/2}$MnO$_3$ is multiferroic. The combination of a peculiar charge-orbital ordering and a tendency to form spin dimers breaks inversion symmetry, leads to a ferroelectric ground-state with a polarization up to several $μC/cm^2$. The presence of improper ferroelectricity does not depend on hotly debated structural details of this material: in the Zener-polaron structure we find a similar dramatic ferroelectric response with a large polarization of purely magnetic origin.

Mott State and Quantum Critical Points in Rare-Earth Oxypnictides $RO_{1-x}F_xFeAs$ ($R=La, Sm, Nd, Pr, Ce$)

We investigate the magnetic phase diagram of the newly discovered iron-based high temperature oxypnictide superconductors of the type RO$_{1-x}$F$_x $FeAs, with rare earths R=La, Sm, Nd, Pr and Ce by means of {\it ab initio} SGGA and SGGA+U density functional computations. We find undoped LaOFeAs to be a Mott insulator when incorporating electronic correlations via SGGA+U for any physically relevant value of $U$. The doped compounds are according to SGGA conductors with a transition from an antiferromagnetic to a non-magnetic state at a hole doping of concentration $x_c$=0.075 for R=Nd, Pr and at electron doping $x_c$=0.25 for Ce and 0.6 for Sm. Superconductivity in these rare-earth oxypnictides thus appears in the vicinity of a magnetic quantum critical point where electronic correlations are expected to play an important role because of the vicinity of a Mott insulating state at zero doping.

Charge ordering and magnetism in quarter-filled Hubbard-Holstein model

We study a two-dimensional Hubbard-Holstein model with phonons treated in the adiabatic limit. A Hartree-Fock decomposition is employed for the Hubbard term. A range of electronic densities are discussed with special emphasis on the quarter-filling ($n=0.5$). We argue that the quarter-filled system is relevant for the electronic properties observed at the interface between LaAlO$_3$ and SrTiO$_3$, where half-electron per unit cell is transferred to the TiO$_2$ layer as a consequence of the polar discontinuity at the interface. In addition to presenting the overall phase diagrams, we identify an interesting charge-ordered antiferromagnetic phase for $n=0.5$, which was also reported recently in the ab-initio study of the LaAlO$_3$-SrTiO$_3$ interface.

Combined Effect of Bond- and Potential-Disorder in Half-Doped Manganites

We analyze the effects of both bond- and potential-disorder in the vicinity of a first-order metal insulator transition in a two-band model for manganites using a real-space Monte Carlo method. Our results reveal a novel charge-ordered state coexisting with spin-glass behavior. We provide the basis for understanding the phase diagrams of half-doped manganites, and contrast the effects of bond- and potential-disorder and the combination of both.

Texture 4 zero Fritzsch-like lepton mass matrices

For Majorana or Dirac neutrinos, using Fritzsch-like texture 4 zero mass matrices with parallel texture structures for the charged leptons and the Dirac neutrino mass matrix (M_{νD}), detailed predictions for cases pertaining to normal/inverted hierarchy as well as degenerate scenarios of neutrino masses have been carried out. The inverted hierarchy as well as degenerate scenarios seem to be ruled out at 3 σC.L. for both Majorana and Dirac neutrinos. For normal hierarchy, Jarlskog's rephasing invariant parameter J, the CP violating Dirac-like phase δand the effective neutrino mass m_{ee} have been calculated. For this case, lower limits of m_{ν_1} and θ_{13} would have implications for the nature of neutrinos.

Disorder-induced orbital ordering in doped manganites

We study the effect of quenched disorder on the ordering of orbital and magnetic degrees of freedom in a two-dimensional, two-band double-exchange model for $e_g$ electrons coupled to Jahn-Teller distortions. Using a real-space Monte Carlo method, we find that disorder can induce a short-range ordering of the orbital degrees of freedom near 30% hole doping. The most striking consequence of this short range ordering is a strong increase in the low temperature resistivity. The real-space approach allows to analyze the spatial patterns of the charge, orbital, and magnetic degrees of freedom, and the correlations among them. The magnetism is inhomogeneous on the nanoscale in the short-range orbitally ordered state.

Two-Zero Symmetric Neutrino Mass Matrices in Minimal Supersymmetric SO(10)

The phenomenological neutrino mass matrix for two-zero symmetric texture has been obtained and used to rule out all possible two-zero symmetric neutrino mass matrices obtained from Yukawa couplings to $\mathbf{10}$ and $\mathbf{126}$ Higgs representations within the framework of minimal supersymmetric SO(10).

CP Violation in Two Zero Texture Neutrino Mass Matrices

It has been shown that the neutrino mass matrices with two texture zeros in the charged lepton basis predict non-zero 1-3 mixing and are necessarily CP violating with one possible exception in class C for maximal mixing.

Phenomenology of Two-Texture Zero Neutrino Mass Matrices

The generic predictions of two-texture zero neutrino mass matrices in the flavor basis have been examined especially in relation to the degeneracies between mass matrices within a class and interesting constraints on the neutrino parameters have been obtained. It is shown that the knowledge of the octant of $θ_{23}$, the sign of $\cosδ$ and neutrino mass hierarchy can be used to lift these degeneracies.

Phenomenological Implications of a Class of Neutrino Mass Matrices

The generic predictions of two-texture zero neutrino mass matrices of class A in the flavor basis have been reexamined especially in relation to the degeneracy between mass matrices of types A_1 and A_2 and interesting constraints on the neutrino parameters have been obtained. It is shown that the octant of $θ_{23}$ and the quadrant of the Dirac-type CP-violating phase $δ$ can be used to lift this degeneracy.

Neutrino Parameter Space for a Vanishing $ee$ Element in the Neutrino Mass Matrix

The consequences of a texture zero at the $ee$ entry of neutrino mass matrix in the flavor basis, which also implies a vanishing effective Majorana mass for neutrinoless double beta decay, have been studied for Majorana neutrinos. The neutrino parameter space under this condition has been constrained in the light of all available neutrino data including the CHOOZ bound on $s_{13}^{2}$.

Symmetry and Numerical Solutions for Systems of Non-linear Reaction Diffusion Equations

Many important applications are available for nonlinear reaction-diffusion equation especially in the area of biology and engineering. Therefore a mathematical model for Lie symmetry reduction of system of nonlinear reaction-diffusion equation with respect to one-dimensional Algebra is carried out in this work. Some classes of analytical and numerical solutions are obtained and expressed using suitable graphs.

Implications of unitarity and precision measurements on CKM matrix elements

Unitarity along with precision measurements of sin2β, V_{us} and V_{cb} allows one to find a lower bound V_{ub}\geq 0.0035 which, on using the recently measured angle αof the unitarity triangle, translates to V_{ub}= 0.0035\pm 0.0002. This precise value, stable for a good deal of changes in α, along with CP violating phase δfound from unitarity allows the construction of a `precise' CKM matrix. The above unitarity based value of V_{ub} is in agreement with the latest exclusive value used as input by UTfit, CKMfitter, HFAG, however underlines the so called `tension' faced by the latest inclusive V_{ub}=0.00449 \pm 0.00033. Further, using this inclusive value of V_{ub} along with the latest sin2β, one finds δ=23 ^{\rm o}- 39 ^{\rm o}, again in conflict with δmeasured in B-decays. The calculated ranges of the elements of the CKM matrix are in excellent agreement with those obtained recently by UTfit, CKMfitter and HFAG. Also, the ratio \frac{V_{ts}}{V_{td}} is in agreement with its latest measured value, whereas there is some disagreement between the `measured' and the calculated V_{td} values.

The Effect of Disorder in an Orbitally Ordered Jahn-Teller Insulator

We study a two dimensional, two-band double-exchange model for $e_g$ electrons coupled to Jahn-Teller distortions in the presence of quenched disorder using a recently developed Monte-Carlo technique. In the absence of disorder the half-filled system at low temperatures is an orbitally ordered ferromagnetic insulator with a staggered pattern of Jahn-Teller distortions. We examine the finite temperature transition to the orbitally disordered phase and uncover a qualitative difference between the intermediate and strongly coupled systems, including a thermally driven insulator to metal crossover in the former case. Long range orbital order is suppressed in the presence of disorder and the system displays a tendency towards metastable states consisting of orbitally disordered stripe-like structures enclosing orbitally ordered domains.

Domain Formation and Orbital Ordering Transition in a Doped Jahn-Teller Insulator

The ground state of a double-exchange model for orbitally degenerate $e_g$ electrons with Jahn-Teller lattice coupling and weak disorder is found to be spatially inhomogeneous near half filling. Using a real space Monte-Carlo method we show that doping the half-filled orbitally ordered insulator leads to the appearance of hole-rich disordered regions in an orbitally ordered environment. The doping driven orbital order to disorder transition is accompanied by the emergence of metallic behavior. We present results on transport and optical properties along with spatial patterns for lattice distortions and charge densities, providing a basis for an overall understanding of the low doping phase diagram of La$_{1-x}$Ca$_x$MnO$_3$.
