Skyrmions and magnetic bubbles in spin-orbit coupled metallic magnets

Motivated by the observation of Skyrmion-like magnetic textures in 2D itinerant ferromagnets Fe$_n$GeTe$_2$ ($n \geq3$), we develop a microscopic model combining itinerant magnetism and spin-orbit coupling on a triangular lattice. The ground state of the model in the absence of magnetic field consists of filamentary magnetic domain walls revealing a striking similarity with our magnetic force microscopy experiments on Fe$_3$GeTe$_2$. In the presence of magnetic field, these filaments were found to break into large size magnetic bubbles in our experiments. We identify uniaxial magnetic anisotropy as an important parameter in the model that interpolates between magnetic Skyrmions and ferromagnetic bubbles. Consequently, our work uncovers new topological magnetic textures that merge properties of Skyrmions and ferromagnetic bubbles.

On a factorization result of Ştefănescu -- II

Ştefănescu proved an elegant factorization result for polynomials over discrete valuation domains [CASC'2014, Lecture Notes in Computer Science, Ed. by V. Gerdt, W. Koepf, W. Mayr, and E. Vorozhtsov, Springer, Berlin, {Vol. \textbf{8660}}, pp. 460--471, 2014.] In this paper, a generalization of Ştefănescu's result is proved to cover a larger class of polynomials over discrete valuation domains. Such results are useful in devising algorithms for polynomial factorization.

Electrically controlled quantum transition to an anomalous metal in 2D

The mechanism through which superconductivity is destroyed upon controlled disordering often holds the key to understanding the mechanism of emergence of superconductivity. Here we demonstrate an $in$-$situ$ mechanism to control the fraction of disorder in a 2D superconductor. By controlling an electric field V$_G$, we created an assembly of segregated superconducting nano-islands and varied the inter-island distance to accomplish a quantum phase transition from a superconducting phase to a strange quantum anomalous metallic (QAM) phase at LaVO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ interfaces. In the QAM phase, the resistivity dropped below a critical temperature (T$_{CM}$) as if the system was approaching superconductivity, and then saturated, indicating the destruction of global phase coherence and the emergence of a phase where metal-like transport of Bosons (a Bose metal) becomes a possibility. The unprecedented control over the island size is obtained through the control of nanometer scale ferroelectric domains formed in the SrTiO$_3$ side of the interface due to a low-temperature structural phase transition.

Neutrino Phenomenology in a Model with Generalized CP symmetry within Type-I seesaw framework

We investigate the consequences of generalized CP (GCP) symmetry within the context of the two Higgs doublet model (2HDM), specifically focusing on the lepton sector. Utilizing the Type-I seesaw framework, we study an intriguing connection between the Dirac Yukawa couplings originating from both Higgs fields, leading to a reduction in the number of independent Yukawa couplings and simplifying the scalar and Yukawa sectors when compared to the general 2HDM. The CP3 constraint results in two right-handed neutrinos having equal masses and leads to a diagonal right-handed Majorana neutrino mass matrix. Notably, CP symmetry experiences a soft break due to the phase associated with the vacuum expectation value of the second Higgs doublet. The model aligns well with observed charged lepton masses and neutrino oscillation data, explaining both masses and mixing angles, and yields distinct predictions for normal and inverted neutrino mass hierarchies. It features a novel interplay between atmospheric mixing angle $θ_{23}$ and neutrino mass hierarchy: the angle $θ_{23}$ is below maximal for the normal hierarchy and above maximal for inverted hierarchy. Another interesting feature of the model is inherent CP violation for the inverted hierarchy.

Self-consistent Modeling of Inductively Coupled Plasma Discharges

The purpose of this work is the development of a self-consistent multi-physics modeling framework for ICP discharges. Unlike a monolithic approach, the hydrodynamics and electromagnetic field are handled by separate solvers, all developed within the Center for Hypersonics and Entry Systems Studies (CHESS) at the University of Illinois. Hydrodynamics is modeled using HEGEL , a finite volume solver for non-equilibrium plasmas. This solver is interfaced with the PLATO library, which is responsible for evaluating all plasma-related quantities (e.g., thermodynamic and transport properties). The electric field is handled by FLUX , a finite element solver. Coupling is realized using the PRE CICE open-source library. Applications are here presented and discussed to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed modeling strategy.

Mimetic Muscle Rehabilitation Analysis Using Clustering of Low Dimensional 3D Kinect Data

Facial nerve paresis is a severe complication that arises post-head and neck surgery; This results in articulation problems, facial asymmetry, and severe problems in non-verbal communication. To overcome the side effects of post-surgery facial paralysis, rehabilitation requires which last for several weeks. This paper discusses an unsupervised approach to rehabilitating patients who have temporary facial paralysis due to damage in mimetic muscles. The work aims to make the rehabilitation process objective compared to the current subjective approach, such as House-Brackmann (HB) scale. Also, the approach will assist clinicians by reducing their workload in assessing the improvement during rehabilitation. This paper focuses on the clustering approach to monitor the rehabilitation process. We compare the results obtained from different clustering algorithms on various forms of the same data set, namely dynamic form, data expressed as functional data using B-spline basis expansion, and by finding the functional principal components of the functional data. The study contains data set of 85 distinct patients with 120 measurements obtained using a Kinect stereo-vision camera. The method distinguish effectively between patients with the least and greatest degree of facial paralysis, however patients with adjacent degrees of paralysis provide some challenges. In addition, we compared the cluster results to the HB scale outputs.

Another irreducibility criterion

Let $f=a_0+ a_{1}x+\cdots+a_m x^m\in \Bbb{Z}[x]$ be a primitive polynomial. Suppose that there exists a positive real number $α$ such that $|a_m| α^m>|a_0|+|a_1|α+\cdots+|a_{m-1}|α^{m-1}$. We prove that if there exist natural numbers $n$ and $d$ satisfying $n\geq α+ d$ for which either $|f(n)|/d$ is a prime, or $|f(n)|/d$ is a prime-power coprime to $|f'(n)|$, then $f$ is irreducible in $\mathbb{Z}[x]$.

A secure deterministic remote state preparation via a seven-qubit entangled channel of an arbitrary two-qubit state under the impact of quantum noise

As one of the most prominent subfields of quantum communication research, remote state preparation (RSP) plays a crucial role in quantum networks. Here we present a deterministic remote state preparation scheme to prepare an arbitrary two-qubit state via a seven-qubit entangled channel created from Borras \emph{et al.} state. Quantum noises are inherent to each and every protocol for quantum communication that is currently in use, putting the integrity of quantum communication systems and their dependability at risk. The initial state of the system was a pure quantum state, but as soon as there was any noise injected into the system, it transitioned into a mixed state. In this article, we discuss the six different types of noise models namely bit-flip noise, phase-flip noise, bit-phase-flip noise, amplitude damping, phase damping and depolarizing noise. The impact these noises had on the entangled channel may be seen by analysing the density matrices that have been altered as a result of the noise. For the purpose of analysing the impact of noise on the scheme, the fidelity between the original quantum state and the remotely prepared state has been assessed and graphically represented. In addition, a comprehensive security analysis is performed, demonstrating that the suggested protocol is safe against internal and external attacks.

A New Approach in MRI Signal Processing for Detecting the Axonal Organization of the Brain

This article introduces a new methodology for reconstructing the white matter fiber pathways of brain in diffusion MRI. Usually, the signal intensity values will be lesser in the direction of higher diffusivity. The proposed approach picks the diffusion sensitivity gradient directions (dSGD), where the signal intensities are diminutive. Considering these as the directions of maximum diffusivity, we generate directions uniformly distributed around the picked dSGD. These newly computed uniformly spaced directions are considered gradient directions used in the reconstruction process. The state-of-art schemes like uniform gradient direction (UGD) have redundancy in the gradient direction, and adaptive gradient direction (AGD) has a constraint of solving linear system twice per voxel. These two limitations are turned down in this study simultaneously. Estimating gradient directions with the proposed scheme is employed in the multi-compartmental mixture models for calculating the fiber orientations. Simulation and experiments on the real data evaluate the feasibility of the proposed method.

Exploring the effect of varying regime of ion fluence on optical and surface electronic properties of CVD Grown Graphene

In this work, the effect of the ion fluence-dependent defect formation on the modification of surface electronic and optical properties of graphene has been investigated. The chemical vapor deposited (CVD) graphene was irradiated with swift heavy ion (SHI) (70 MeV Si+5) beam at different fluence to study the defect formation mechanism and the role of it in modulating its surface electronic property such as work function. At low ion dose, acceptor doping via vacancy creation was observed; whereas dense electronic excitation dominated extended defects was realized at higher dose, which subsequently transforms the crystalline graphene into amorphous carbon. The results from UV-Vis spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy and scanning Kelvin probe microscopy (SKPM) support the fact. Thus a new pathway of transformation of graphene under SHI irradiation was explored where ion dose could be the main factor to realize several effects in graphene.

First Order Topological Phase Transitions and Disorder Induced Majorana Modes in Interacting Fermion Chains

Using a combination of the mean-field Bogoliubov deGennes (BdG) approach and the Density Matrix Renormalization Group (DMRG) method, we discover first order topological transitions between topological superconducting and trivial insulating phases in a sawtooth lattice of inter-site attractive fermions. Topological characterization of different phases is achieved in terms of winding numbers, Majorana edge modes and entanglement spectra. By studying the effect of disorder on the first order topological phase transitions, we establish the disorder-induced topological phase coexistence as a mechanism for generating a finite density of Majorana particles.

Diagnosing Data from ICTs to Provide Focused Assistance in Agricultural Adoptions

In the last two decades, ICTs have played a pivotal role in empowering rural populations in India by making knowledge more accessible. Digital Green (DG) is one such ICT that employs a participatory approach with smallholder farmers to produce instructional videos that encompass content specific to them. With help of human mediators, they disseminate these videos using projectors to improve the adoption of agricultural practices. DG's web-based data tracker stores attendance and adoption logs of millions of farmers, videos screened and their demographic information. We leverage this data for a period of ten years between 2010-2020 across five states in India and use it to conduct a holistic evaluation of the ICT. First, we find disparities in adoption rates of farmers, following which we use statistical tests to identify different factors that lead to these disparities and gender-based inequalities. Second, to provide assistance to farmers facing challenges, we model the adoption of practices from a video as a prediction problem and experiment with different model architectures. Our classifier achieves accuracies ranging from 79% to 90% across the five states, demonstrating its potential for assisting future ethnographic investigations. Third, we use SHAP values in conjunction with our model for explaining the impact of various network, content and demographic features on adoption. Our research finds that farmers greatly benefit from past adopters of a video from their group and village. We also discover that videos with a low content-specificity benefit some farmers more than others. Next, we highlight the implications of our findings by translating them into recommendations for community building, revisiting participatory approach and mitigating inequalities. We conclude with a discussion on how our work can assist future investigations into the lived experiences of farmers.

On a factorization result of Ştefănescu

In this article, some factorization properties of polynomials over discrete valuation domains are elucidated. These properties along with the notion of Newton index of a polynomial leads to a generalization of the main result proved by Ştefănescu [`On the factorization of polynomials over discrete valuation domains', \emph{Versita} \textbf{22}:1 (2014), 273--280].

A Four-Party Quantum Secret-Sharing Scheme based on Grover's Search Algorithm

The work presents an amalgam of quantum search algorithm (QSA) and quantum secret sharing (QSS). The proposed QSS scheme utilizes Grover's three-particle quantum state. In this scheme, the dealer prepares an encoded state by encoding the classical information as a marked state and shares the states' qubits between three participants. The participants combine their qubits and find the marked state as a measurement result of the three-qubit state. The security analysis shows the scheme is stringent against malicious participants or eavesdroppers. In comparison to the existing schemes, our protocol fairs pretty well and has a high encoding capacity. The simulation analysis is done on the cloud platform IBM-QE thereby showing the practical feasibility of the scheme.

A new iterative algorithm for generating gradient directions to detect white matter fibers in brain from MRI data

This paper proposes an iterative algorithm for choosing gradient directions use to reconstruct white matter fibers in the brain. The present study is not focusing on data acquisition where scanning is performed. The Adaptive Gradient Directions (AGD) approach is extended to refine the position and area of the grid, resulting in an admissible reduction in angular error. We begin with the gradient directions distributed uniformly inside a grid of bigger size and with larger spacing between the points. Both (size of the grid and spacing between the points) reduce iteratively. The proposed algorithm ensures that the actual position of fiber comes inside the grid at each iteration, unlike as in the AGD approach. As a result, the solution tends to actual orientation in each iteration followed by better estimation of fibers. The proposed algorithm is validated by associating it with mixture of Gaussian diffusion and mixture of non-central Wishart distribution models. The proposed approach significantly reduce the angular error for multiple computer-generated experiments on synthetic simulations and real data. Moreover, we have also performed simulations with fibers not residing in the XY-plane. For this set-up also, the proposed work outperforms, giving lesser angular error with both the models. Synthetic simulations have been performed with Rician distributed (R-D) noise of standard deviation ranging from 0.02-0.1. This work helps in better understanding of the anatomy of the brain using the MRI signal data.

Engineering antiferromagnetic skyrmions and antiskyrmions at metallic interfaces

We identify a mechanism to convert skyrmions and antiskyrmions into their antiferromagnetic (AFM) counterparts via interfacial engineering. The key idea is to combine properties of an antiferromagnet and a spin-orbit (SO) coupled metal. Utilizing hybrid Monte Carlo (HMC) simulations for a generic microscopic electronic Hamiltonian for the interfacial layers, we explicitly show the emergence of AFM skyrmions and AFM antiskyrmions. We further show that an effective spin Hamiltonian provides a simpler understanding of the results. We discuss the role of electronic itinerancy in determining the nature of magnetic textures, and demonstrate that the mechanism also allows for a tuning of antiskyrmion size without changing the SO coupling.

Spin-$S$ impurities with XXZ anisotropy in a spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain

We study the effect of anisotropy of spin-$S$ impurities on an antiferromagnetic SU(2) Heisenberg chain. The magnetic impurities are assumed to have an XXZ-type anisotropic exchange with its neighboring sites. First, using density-matrix renormalization group technique. we examine spin-spin correlation function, instability of Néel order, and local spin susceptibility in the presence of a single spin-$S$ impurity. Based on the results, we find that the types of spin-$S$ impurities are classified into two groups: $\rm(\hspace{.18em}i\hspace{.18em})$ nonmagnetic and $S=1$ impurities enhance only short-range antiferromagnetic correlation and $\rm(\hspace{.08em}ii\hspace{.08em})$ $S=1/2$ and $S>1$ impurities can, in contrast, stabilize a long-range Néel order in the disordered SU(2) Heisenberg chain. Then, we focus on the case of $S=1/2$ impurity as a representative of $\rm(\hspace{.08em}ii\hspace{.08em})$ and investigate the evolution of some experimentally observable quantities such as magnetization, specific heat, and magnetic susceptibility, as a function of concentration and XXZ anisotropy strength of the impurity. We confirm that the Néel order is induced in the bulk spin chain in the presence of finite amount of easy-axis XXZ $S=1/2$ impurities. Furthermore, we recover some of the aforementioned features using cluster mean-field theory, which allows us to present results on experimentally accessible quantities at finite temperatures. Interestingly, in the presence of uniform magnetic field, the total magnetization exhibits a pseudo-gap behavior for low values of applied field. We also discuss the dependence of NMR spectrum on various XXZ impurities and identify that the spin state of Co impurity in SrCu$_{0.99}$Co$_{0.01}$O$_2$ is $S = 3/2$.
