The propagator in polymer quantum field theory

We study free scalar field theory on flat spacetime using a background independent (polymer) quantization procedure. Specifically we compute the propagator using a method that takes the energy spectrum and position matrix elements of the harmonic oscillator as inputs. We obtain closed form results in the infrared and ultraviolet regimes that give Lorentz invariance violating dispersion relations, and show suppression of propagation at sufficiently high energy.

Tomimatsu-Sato geometries, holography and quantum gravity

We analyze the $δ=2$ Tomimatsu-Sato spacetime in the context of the proposed Kerr/CFT correspondence. This 4-dimensional vacuum spacetime is asymptotically flat and has a well-defined ADM mass and angular momentum, but also involves several exotic features including a naked ring singularity, and two disjoint Killing horizons separated by a region with closed timelike curves and a rod-like conical singularity. We demonstrate that the near horizon geometry belongs to a general class of Ricci-flat metrics with $SL(2,\mathbb{R})\times U(1)$ symmetry that includes both the extremal Kerr and extremal Kerr-bolt geometries. We calculate the central charge and temperature for the CFT dual to this spacetime and confirm the Cardy formula reproduces the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy. We find that all of the basic parameters of the dual CFT are most naturally expressed in terms of charges defined intrinsically on the horizon, which are distinct from the ADM charges in this geometry.

Analytic Description of DGP Perturbations on All Scales

We develop analytic solutions for the linear evolution of metric perturbations in the DGP braneworld modified gravity scenario including near-horizon and superhorizon modes where solutions in the bulk are required. These solutions apply to both the self-accelerating and normal branch and elucidate the nature of coordinate singularities and initial data in the bulk as well as their effect on perturbation evolution on the brane. Even on superhorizon scales, the evolution of metric perturbations is no longer necessarily scale free due to multiple resonances in the bulk. Based on these analytic solutions, we devise convenient fitting functions for the evolution that bridge the various spatial and temporal regimes. Compared with a direct numerical integration of the bulk equations, the fits are accurate at the percent level and are sufficient for current and upcoming observational tests.

Background independent quantization and the uncertainty principle

It is shown that polymer quantization leads to a modified uncertainty principle similar to that obtained from string theory and non-commutative geometry. When applied to quantum field theory on general background spacetimes, corrections to the uncertainty principle acquire a metric dependence. For Friedmann-Robertson-Walker cosmology this translates to a scale factor dependence which gives a large effect in the early universe.

Non-singular inflationary universe from polymer matter

We consider a polymer quantization of a free massless scalar field in a homogeneous and isotropic cosmological spacetime. This quantization method assumes that field translations are fundamentally discrete, and is related to but distinct from that used in loop quantum gravity. The semi-classical Friedman equation yields a universe that is non-singular and non-bouncing, without quantum gravity. The model has an early de Sitter-like inflationary phase with sufficient expansion to resolve the horizon and entropy problems, and a built in mechanism for a graceful exit from inflation.

Background independent quantization and wave propagation

We apply a type of background independent "polymer" quantization to a free scalar field in a flat spacetime. Using semi-classical states, we find an effective wave equation that is both nonlinear and Lorentz invariance violating. We solve this equation perturbatively for several cases of physical interest, and show that polymer corrections to solutions of the Klein-Gordon equation depend on the amplitude of the field. This leads to an effective dispersion relation that depends on the amplitude, frequency and shape of the wave-packet, and is hence distinct from other modified dispersion relations found in the literature. We also demonstrate that polymer effects tend to accumulate with time for plane-symmetric waveforms. We conclude by discussing the possibility of measuring deviations from the Klein-Gordon equation in particle accelerators or astrophysical observations.

Gravitational waves in the black string braneworld

We study gravitational waves in the black string Randall-Sundrum braneworld. We present a reasonably self-contained and complete derivation of the equations governing the evolution of gravitational perturbations in the presence of a brane localized source, and then specialize to the case of spherical radiation from a pointlike body in orbit around the black string. We solve for the resulting gravitational waveform numerically for a number of different orbital parameters.

Einstein static universes are unstable in generic f(R) models

We study Einstein static universes in the context of generic f(R) models. It is shown that Einstein static solutions exist for a wide variety of modified gravity models sourced by a barotropic perfect fluid with equation of state w=p/rho, but these solutions are always unstable to either homogeneous or inhomogeneous perturbations. Our general results are in agreement with specific models investigated in that past. We also discuss how our techniques can be applied to other scenarios in f(R) gravity.

Ricci flows, wormholes and critical phenomena

We study the evolution of wormhole geometries under Ricci flow using numerical methods. Depending on values of initial data parameters, wormhole throats either pinch off or evolve to a monotonically growing state. The transition between these two behaviors exhibits a from of critical phenomena reminiscent of that observed in gravitational collapse. Similar results are obtained for initial data that describe space bubbles attached to asymptotically flat regions. Our numerical methods are applicable to "matter-coupled" Ricci flows derived from conformal invariance in string theory.

Cosmological perturbations in the DGP braneworld: numeric solution

We solve for the behaviour of cosmological perturbations in the Dvali-Gabadadze-Porrati (DGP) braneworld model using a new numerical method. Unlike some other approaches in the literature, our method uses no approximations other than linear theory and is valid on large scales. We examine the behaviour of late-universe density perturbations for both the self-accelerating and normal branches of DGP cosmology. Our numerical results can form the basis of a detailed comparison between the DGP model and cosmological observations.

Scalar perturbations in braneworld cosmology

We study the behaviour of scalar perturbations in the radiation-dominated era of Randall-Sundrum braneworld cosmology by numerically solving the coupled bulk and brane master wave equations. We find that density perturbations with wavelengths less than a critical value (set by the bulk curvature length) are amplified during horizon re-entry. This means that the radiation era matter power spectrum will be at least an order of magnitude larger than the predictions of general relativity (GR) on small scales. Conversely, we explicitly confirm from simulations that the spectrum is identical to GR on large scales. Although this magnification is not relevant for the cosmic microwave background or measurements of large scale structure, it will have some bearing on the formation of primordial black holes in Randall-Sundrum models.

Coupled bulk and brane fields about a de Sitter brane

We consider the evolution of a bulk scalar field in anti-de Sitter (AdS) spacetime linearly coupled to a scalar field on a de Sitter boundary brane. We present results of a spectral analysis of the system, and find that the model can exhibit both bound and continuum resonant modes. We find that zero, one, or two bound states may exist, depending upon the masses of the brane and bulk fields relative to the Hubble length and the AdS curvature scale and the coupling strength. In all cases, we find a critical coupling above which there exists a tachyonic bound state. We show how the 5-dimensional spectral results can be interpreted in terms of a 4-dimensional effective theory for the bound states. We find excellent agreement between our analytic results and the results of a new numerical code developed to model the evolution of bulk fields coupled to degrees of freedom on a moving brane. This code can be used to model the behaviour of braneworld cosmological perturbations in scenarios for which no analytic results are known.

A gravitational wave window on extra dimensions

We report on the possibility of detecting a submillimetre-sized extra dimension by observing gravitational waves (GWs) emitted by pointlike objects orbiting a braneworld black hole. Matter in the `visible' universe can generate a discrete spectrum of high frequency GWs with amplitudes moderately weaker than the predictions of general relativity (GR), while GW signals generated by matter on a `shadow' brane hidden in the bulk are potentially strong enough to be detected using current technology. We know of no other astrophysical phenomena that produces GWs with a similar spectrum, which stresses the need to develop detectors capable of measuring this high-frequency signature of large extra dimensions.

Gravitational waves and cosmological braneworlds: a characteristic evolution scheme

Motivated by the problem of the evolution of bulk gravitational waves in Randall-Sundrum cosmology, we develop a characteristic numerical scheme to solve 1+1 dimensional wave equations in the presence of a moving timelike boundary. The scheme exhibits quadratic convergence, is capable of handling arbitrary brane trajectories, and is easily extendible to non-AdS bulk geometries. We use our method to contrast two different prescriptions for the bulk fluctuation initial conditions found in the literature; namely, those of Hiramatsu et al. (hep-th/0410247) and Ichiki and Nakamura (astro-ph/0406606). We find that if the initial data surface is set far enough in the past, the late time waveform on the brane is insensitive to the choice between the two possibilities; and we present numeric and analytic evidence that this phenomenon generalizes to more generic initial data. Observationally, the main consequence of this work is to re-affirm previous claims that the stochastic gravitational wave spectrum is predominantly flat, in contradiction with naive predictions from the effective 4-dimensional theory. Furthermore, this flat spectrum result is predicted to be robust against uncertainties in (or modifications of) the bulk initial data, provided that the energy scale of brane inflation is high enough.

Ringing the Randall-Sundrum braneworld: metastable gravity wave bound states

In the Randall-Sundrum scenario, our universe is a 4-dimensional `brane' living in a 5-dimensional bulk spacetime. By studying the scattering of bulk gravity waves, we show that this brane rings with a characteristic set of complex quasinormal frequencies, much like a black hole. To a bulk observer these modes are interpreted as metastable gravity wave bound states, while a brane observer views them as a discrete spectrum of decaying massive gravitons. Potential implications of these scattering resonances are discussed.

Braneworld resonances

We investigate in detail gravitational waves in an Schwarzschild-anti-de Sitter bulk spacetime surrounded by an Einstein static brane with generic matter content. Such a model provides a useful analogy to braneworld cosmology at various stages of its evolution, and generalizes our previous work [gr-qc/0504023] on pure tension Einstein-static branes. We find that the behaviour of tensor-mode perturbations is completely dominated by quasi-normal modes, and we use a variety of numeric and analytic techniques to find the frequencies and lifetimes of these excitations. The parameter space governing the model yields a rich variety of resonant phenomena, which we thoroughly explore. We find that certain configurations can support a number of lightly damped `quasi-bound states'. A zero-mode which reproduces 4-dimensional general relativity is recovered on infinitely large branes. We also examine the problem in the time domain using Green's function techniques in addition to direct numeric integration. We conclude by discussing how the quasi-normal resonances we find here can impact on braneworld cosmology.

Metastable massive gravitons from an infinite extra dimension

Motivated by stringy considerations, Randall & Sundrum have proposed a model where all the fields and particles of physics, save gravity, are confined on a 4-dimensional brane embedded in 5-dimensional anti-deSitter space. Their scenario features a stable bound state of bulk gravity waves and the brane that reproduces standard general relativity. We demonstrate that in addition to this zero-mode, there is also a discrete set of metastable bound states that behave like massive 4-dimensional gravitons which decay by tunneling into the bulk. These are resonances of the bulk-brane system akin to black hole quasinormal modes--as such, they give rise to the dominant corrections to 4-dimensional gravity. The phenomenology of braneworld perturbations is greatly simplified when these resonant modes are taken into account, which is illustrated by considering gravitational radiation emitted from nearby sources and early universe physics.
