Quantum transport through pairs of edge states of opposite chirality at electric and magnetic boundaries

We theoretically investigate electrical transport in a quantum Hall system hosting bulk and edge current carrying states. Spatially varying magnetic and electric confinement creates pairs of current carrying lines that drift in the same or opposite directions depending on whether confinement is applied by a magnetic split gate or a magnetic strip gate. We study the electronic structure through calculations of the local density of states and conductivity of the channel as a function of the chirality and wave-function overlap of these states. We demonstrate a shift of the conductivity peaks to high or low magnetic field depending on chirality of pairs of edge states and the effect of chirality on backscattering amplitude associated with collisional processes.

Cross-over between Magnetic and Electric Edges in Quantum Hall Systems

We report on the transition from magnetic edge to electric edge transport in a split magnetic gate device which applies a notch magnetic field to a two-dimensional electron gas. The gate bias allows tuning the overlap of magnetic and electric edge wavefunctions on the scale of the magnetic length. Conduction at magnetic edges - in the 2D-bulk - is found to compete with conduction at electric edges until magnetic edges become depleted. Current lines then move to the electrostatic edges as in the conventional quantum Hall picture. The conductivity was modelled using the quantum Boltzmann equation in the exact hybrid potential. The theory predicts the features of the bulk-edge cross-over in good agreement with experiment.

Cavity Optomechanics with Ultra Cold Atoms in Synthetic Abelian and Non-Abelian Gauge Field

In this article we present a pedagogical discussion of some of the optomechanical properties of a high finesse cavity loaded with ultracold atoms in laser induced synthetic gauge fields of different types. Essentially, the subject matter of this article is an amalgam of two sub-fields of atomic molecular and optical (AMO) physics namely, the cavity optomechanics with ultracold atoms and ultracold atoms in synthetic gauge field. After providing a brief introduction to either of these fields we shall show how and what properties of these trapped ultracold atoms can be studied by looking at the cavity (optomechanical or transmission) spectrum. In presence of abelian synthetic gauge field we discuss the cold-atom analogue of Shubnikov de Haas oscillation and its detection through cavity spectrum. Then, in the presence of a non-abelian synthetic gauge field (spin-orbit coupling), we see when the electromagnetic field inside the cavity is quantized, it provides a quantum optical lattice for the atoms, leading to the formation of different quantum magnetic phases. We also discuss how these phases can be explored by studying the cavity transmission spectrum.

Unconventional band structure for a periodically gated surface of a three dimensional Topological Insulator

The surface states of the three dimensional (3D) Topological Insulators are described by two-dimensional (2D) massless dirac equation. A gate voltage induced one dimensional potential barrier on such surface creates a discrete bound state in the forbidden region outside the dirac cone. Even for a single barrier it is shown such bound state can create electrostatic analogue of Shubnikov de Haas oscillation which can be experimentally observed for relatively smaller size samples. However when these surface states are exposed to a periodic arrangement of such gate voltage induced potential barriers, the band structure of the same got nontrivially modified. This is expected to significantly alters the properties of macroscopic system. We also suggest that in suitable limit the system may offer ways to control electron spin electrostatically which may be practically useful.

Hydrodynamic theory of Rotating Ultracold Bose Einstein Condensates in Supersolid Phase

Within mean field Gross-Pitaevskii framework, ultra cold atomic condensates with long range interaction is predicted to have a supersolid like ground state beyond a critical interaction strength. Such mean field supersolid like ground state has periodically modulated superfluid density which implies the coexistence of superfluid and crystalline order. Ultra cold atomic system in such mean field ground state can be subjected to artificial gauge field created either through rotation or by introducing space dependent coupling among hyperfine states of the atoms using Raman lasers. Starting from this Gross-Pitaevskii energy functional that describes such systems at zero temperature, we construct hydrodynamic theory to describe the low energy long wavelength excitations of such rotating supersolid of weakly interacting ultra cold atoms in two spatial dimensions for generic type of long range interaction. We treat the supersolidity in such system within the framework of well known two fluid approximation. Considering such system in the fast rotation limit where a vortex lattice in superfluid coexists with the supersolid lattice, we analytically obtain the dispersion relations of collective excitations around this equilibrium state. The dispersion relation gives the modes of the rotating supersolid which can be experimentally measured within the current technology. We point out that this can clearly identify such a ultra cold atomic supersolid phase in an unambiguous way.

Entanglement like properties in Spin-Orbit Coupled Ultra Cold Atom and violation of Bell like Inequality

We show that the general quantum state of synthetically spin-orbit coupled ultra cold bosonic atom whose condensate was experimentally created recently ( Y. J. Lin {\it et al.}, Nature, {\bf 471}, 83, (2011)), shows entanglement between motional degrees of freedom ( momentum) and internal degrees of freedom (hyperfine spin). We demonstrate the violation of Bell-like inequality (CHSH) for such states that provides a unique opportunity to verify fundamental principle like quantum non-contextuality for commutating observables which are not spatially separated. We analyze in detail the Rabi oscillation executed by such atom-laser system and how that influneces quantities like entanglement entropy, violation of Bell like Inequality etc. We also discuss the implication of our result in testing the quantum non-contextuality and Bell's Inequality vioaltion by macroscopic quantum object like Bose-Einstein Condensate of ultra cold atoms.

Synthetic Gauge Fields for Ultra Cold Atoms: A Primer

We start by reviewing the concept of gauge invariance in quantum mechanics, for Abelian and Non-Ableian cases. Then we idescribe how the various gauge potential and field can be associated with the geometrical phase acquired by a quantum mechanical wave function while adiabatically evolving in a parameter space. Subsequently we show how this concept is exploited to generate light induced gauge field for neutral ultra cold bosonic atoms. As an example of such light induced Abelian and Non Abelian gauge field for ultra cold atoms we disucss ultra cold atoms in a rotating trap and creation of synthetic spin orbit coupling for ultra cold atomic systems using Raman lasers.

Ultracold Spin-Orbit Coupled Bose-Einstein Condensate in a Cavity: Route to Magnetic Phases Through Cavity Transmission

We study the spin orbit coupled ultra cold Bose-Einstein condensate placed in a single mode Fabry-Pérot cavity. The cavity introduces a quantum optical lattice potential which dynamically couples with the atomic degrees of freedom and realizes a generalized extended Bose Hubbard model whose zero temperature phase diagram can be controlled by tuning the cavity parameters. In the non-interacting limit, where the atom-atom interaction is set to zero, the resulting atomic dispersion shows interesting features such as bosonic analogue of Dirac points, cavity controlled Hofstadter spectrum which bears the hallmark of pseudo-spin-1/2 bosons in presence of Abelian and non-Abelian gauge field (the later due to spin-orbit coupling) in a cavity induced optical lattice potential. In the presence of atom-atom interaction, using a mapping to a generalized Bose Hubbard model of spin-orbit coupled bosons in classical optical lattice, we show that the system realizes a host of quantum magnetic phases whose magnetic order can be be detected from the cavity transmission. This provides an alternative approach for detecting quantum magnetism in ultra cold atoms. We discuss the effect of cavity induced optical bistability on this phases and their experimental consequences.

Identifying insulating states of ultra cold atoms with cavity transmission spectrum

In this paper, we consider the transmission characteristics of an optical cavity loaded with ultra cold atoms in a one dimensional optical lattice at absolute zero temperature. In particular, we consider the situation when the many body quantum state of the ultra cold atoms is an insulating state with fixed number of atoms at each site, which can be either density wave (DW) or Mott insulator (MI) phase, each showing different type of discrete lattice translational symmetry. We provide a general framework of understanding the transmission spectrum from a single and two cavities/modes loaded with such insulating phases. Further, we also discuss how such a transmission spectrum changes when these insulating phases make a cross over to the superfluid (SF) phase with the changing depth of the optical lattice potential.

Scattering of massless Dirac fermions in circular p-n junctions with and without magnetic field

In the absence of a magnetic field, scattered wavefunction inside a circular p-n junction in graphene exhibits an interference pattern with high intensity maximum located around the caustics. We investigate the wavefunctions in the presence of a uniform magnetic field outside the circular region to show how the loci of the high intensity region changes by forming Landau level structure outside the circular region and a central high intensity region inside the circular p-n junction due to the strong reflection of massless Dirac fermions by the outside magnetic field. We conclude by suggesting experimental ways to detect such change of pattern due to the effect of the magnetic field.

Cavity optomechanics with synthetic Landau levels of ultra cold Fermi gas

Ultra cold fermionic atoms placed in a synthetic magnetic field arrange themselves in Landau levels. We theoretically study the optomechanical interaction between the light field and collective excitations of such fermionic atoms in synthetic magnetic field by placing them in side a Fabry Perot cavity. We derive the effective hamiltonian for particle hole excitations from a filled Landau level using a bosonization technique and obtain an expression for the cavity transmission spectrum. Using this we show that the cavity transmission spectrum demonstrates cold atom analogue of Subnikov de Hass oscillation in electronic condensed matter systems. We discuss the experimental consequences for this oscillation for such system and the related optical bistability.

Electron optics with dirac fermions: electron transport in monolayer and bilayer graphene through magnetic barrier and their superlattices

In this review article we discuss the recent progress in studying ballistic transport for charge carriers in graphene through highly inhomogenous magnetic field known as magnetic barrier in combination with gate voltage induced electrostatic potential. Starting with cases for a single or double magnetic barrier we also review the progress in understanding electron transport through the superlattices created out of such electromagnetic potential barriers and discuss the possibility of experimental realization of such systems. The emphasis is particularly on the analogy of such transport with propagation of light wave through medium with alternating dielectric constant. In that direction we discuss electron analogue of optical phenomena like fabry perot resonances, negative refraction, Goos-Hänchen effect, beam collimation in such systems and explain how such analogy is going to be useful for device generation. The resulting modification of band structure of dirac fermions, the emergence of additional dirac points was also discussed accompanied by brief section on the interconvertibility of electric and magnetic field for relativistic dirac fermions. We also discuss the effect of such electromagnetic potential barrier on bilayer graphene in a similar framework.

A Green's function approach to transmission of massless Dirac fermions in graphene through an array of random scatterers

We consider the transmission of massless Dirac fermions through an array of short range scatterers which are modeled as randomly positioned $δ$- function like potentials along the x-axis. We particularly discuss the interplay between disorder-induced localization that is the hallmark of a non-relativistic system and two important properties of such massless Dirac fermions, namely, complete transmission at normal incidence and periodic dependence of transmission coefficient on the strength of the barrier that leads to a periodic resonant transmission. This leads to two different types of conductance behavior as a function of the system size at the resonant and the off-resonance strengths of the delta function potential. We explain this behavior of the conductance in terms of the transmission through a pair of such barriers using a Green's function based approach. The method helps to understand such disordered transport in terms of well known optical phenomena such as Fabry Perot resonances.

Fock space exploration by angle resolved transmission through quantum diffraction grating of cold atoms in an optical lattice

Light transmission or diffraction from different quantum phases of cold atoms in an optical lattice has recently come up as a useful tool to probe such ultra cold atomic systems. The periodic nature of the optical lattice potential closely resembles the structure of a diffraction grating in real space, but loaded with a strongly correlated quantum many body state which interacts with the incident electromagnetic wave, a feature that controls the nature of the light transmission or dispersion through such quantum medium. In this paper we show that as one varies the relative angle between the cavity mode and the optical lattice, the peak of the transmission spectrum through such cavity also changes reflecting the statistical distribution of the atoms in the illuminated sites. Consequently the angle resolved transmission spectrum of such quantum diffraction grating can provide a plethora of information about the Fock space structure of the many body quantum state of ultra cold atoms in such an optical cavity that can be explored in current state of the art experiments.

A Transfer Matrix Approach to Electron Transport in Graphene through Arbitrary Electric and Magnetic Potential Barriers

A transfer matrix method is presented for solving the scattering problem for the quasi one-dimensional massless Dirac equation applied to graphene in the presence of an arbitrary inhomogeneous electric and perpendicular magnetic field. It is shown that parabolic cylindrical functions, which have previously been used in literature, become inaccurate at high incident energies and low magnetic fields. A series expansion technique is presented to circumvent this problem. An alternate method using asymptotic expressions is also discussed and the relative merits of the two methods are compared.

Generation of modal and path-entangled photons using a domain-engineered integrated optical waveguide device

Integrated optical devices are expected to play a promising role in the field of quantum information science and technology. In this paper, we propose a scheme for the generation of nondegenerate, copolarised, modal, and path- entangled photons using a directional coupler and an asymmetric Y-coupler geometry in type 0 phase-matched domain engineered lithium niobate(LN) waveguide. The nonlinearity in LN is tailored in such a way that quasi phase matching conditions for two different spontaneous parametric down conversion processes are obeyed simultaneously, leading to a modal and path-entangled state at the output. Assuming typical values of various parameters, we show, through numerical simulations, that an almost maximally entangled state is achievable over a wide range of waveguide parameters. For the degenerate case, the scheme gives a NOON state for N = 2. The generated entangled photon pairs should have potential applications in quantum information schemes and also in quantum metrology. By appropriate domain engineering and component designing, the idea can be further extended to generate hyperentangled and two-photon multipath-entangled states, which may have further applications in quantum computation protocols.

Density Wave -Supersolid and Mott Insulator-Superfluid transition in presence of an artificial gauge field : a strong coupling perturbation approach

We study the effect of an artificial gauge field on the zero temperature phase diagram of extended Bose Hubbard model, that describes ultra cold atoms in optical lattices with long range interaction using strong coupling perturbation theory . We determine analytically the effect of the artificial gauge field on the density wave - supersolid (DW-SS) and the the Mott insulator-superfluid (MI -SF) transition boundary . The momentum distribution at these two transition boundaries is also calculated in this approach. It is shown that such momentum distribution which can be observed in time of flight measurement, reveals the symmetry of the gauge potential through the formation of magnetic Brillouin zone and clearly distinguishes between the DW-SS and MI-SF boundary. We also point out that in symmetric gauge the momentum distribution structure at these transition boundaries bears distinctive signatures of vortices in supersolid and superfluid phases.

Reversal of Klein reflection in bilayer graphene

Whereas massless Dirac fermions in monolayer graphene exhibit Klein tunneling when passing through a potential barrier upon normal incidence, such a barrier totally reflects massive Dirac fermions in bilayer graphene due to difference in chirality. We show that, in the presence of magnetic barriers, such massive Dirac fermions can have transmission through even at normal incidence. The general consequence of this behaviour for multilayer graphene consisting of massless and massive modes are mentioned. We also briefly discuss the effect of a bias voltage on such magnetotransport.
