Chromatic polynomials of graphs from Kac-Moody algebras

We give a new interpretation of the chromatic polynomial of a simple graph G in terms of the Kac-Moody Lie algebra with Dynkin diagram G. We show that the chromatic polynomial is essentially the q-Kostant partition function of this Lie algebra evaluated on the sum of the simple roots. Applying the Peterson recurrence formula for root multiplicities, we obtain a new realization of the chromatic polynomial as a weighted sum of paths in the bond lattice of G.

Demazure Flags, Chebyshev polynomials, Partial and Mock theta functions

We study the level $m$--Demazure flag of a level $\ell$--Demazure module for $\frak{sl}_2[t]$. We define the generating series $A_n^{\ell \rightarrow m}(x,q)$ which encodes the $q$--multiplicity of the level $m$ Demazure module of weight $n$. We establish two recursive formulae for these functions. We show that the specialization to $q=1$ is a rational function involving the Chebyshev polynomials. We give a closed form for $A_n^{\ell \rightarrow \ell+1}(x,q)$ and prove that it is given by a rational function. In the case when $m=\ell+1$ and $\ell=1,2$, we relate the generating series to partial theta series. We also study the specializations $A_n^{1\rightarrow 3}(q^k,q)$ and relate them to the fifth order mock-theta functions of Ramanujan.

Unique factorization of tensor products for Kac-Moody algebras

We consider integrable, category O-modules of indecomposable symmetrizable Kac-Moody algebras. We prove that unique factorization of tensor products of irreducible modules holds in this category, upto twisting by one dimensional modules. This generalizes a fundamental theorem of Rajan for finite dimensional simple Lie algebras over C. Our proof is new even for the finite dimensional case, and uses an interplay of representation theory and combinatorics to analyze the Kac-Weyl character formula.

The t-analog of the basic string function for twisted affine Kac-Moody algebras

We study Lusztig's t-analog of weight multiplicities associated to level one representations of twisted affine Kac-Moody algebras. An explicit closed form expression is obtained for the corresponding t-string function using constant term identities of Macdonald and Cherednik. The closed form involves the generalized exponents of the graded pieces of the twisted affine algebra, considered as modules for the underlying finite dimensional simple Lie algebra. This extends previous work on level 1 t-string functions for the untwisted simply-laced affine Kac-Moody algebras.

Kostka-Foulkes polynomials for symmetrizable Kac-Moody algebras

We introduce a generalization of the classical Hall-Littlewood and Kostka-Foulkes polynomials to all symmetrizable Kac-Moody algebras. We prove that these Kostka-Foulkes polynomials coincide with the natural generalization of Lusztig's $t$-analog of weight multiplicities, thereby extending a theorem of Kato. For $g$ an affine Kac-Moody algebra, we define $t$-analogs of string functions and use Cherednik's constant term identities to derive explicit product expressions for them.

Affine Hall-Littlewood functions for $A_1^{(1)}$ and some constant term identities of Cherednik-Macdonald-Mehta type

We study $t$-analogs of string functions for integrable highest weight representations of the affine Kac-Moody algebra $A_1^{(1)}$. We obtain closed form formulas for certain $t$-string functions of levels 2 and 4. As corollaries, we obtain explicit identities for the corresponding affine Hall-Littlewood functions, as well as higher-level generalizations of Cherednik's Macdonald and Macdonald-Mehta constant term identities.

A note on exponents vs root heights for complex simple Lie algebras

We give an elementary combinatorial proof of a special case of a result due to Bazlov and Ion concerning the Fourier coefficients of the Cherednik kernel. This can be used to give yet another proof of the classical fact that for a complex simple Lie algebra, the partition formed by its exponents is dual to that formed by the numbers of positive roots at each height.

Poincare series of subsets of affine Weyl groups

In this note, we identify a natural class of subsets of affine Weyl groups whose Poincare series are rational functions. This class includes the sets of minimal coset representatives of reflection subgroups. As an application, we construct a generalization of the classical length-descent generating function, and prove its rationality.

On growth types of quotients of Coxeter groups by parabolic subgroups

The principal objects studied in this note are Coxeter groups $W$ that are neither finite nor affine. A well known result of de la Harpe asserts that such groups have exponential growth. We consider quotients of $W$ by its parabolic subgroups and by a certain class of reflection subgroups. We show that these quotients have exponential growth as well. To achieve this, we use a theorem of Dyer to construct a reflection subgroup of $W$ that is isomorphic to the universal Coxeter group on three generators. The results are all proved under the restriction that the Coxeter diagram of $W$ is simply laced, and some remarks made on how this restriction may be relaxed.

Dynkin diagram sequences and stabilization phenomena

We continue the study of stabilization phenomena for Dynkin diagram sequences initiated in the earlier work of Kleber and the present author. We consider a more general class of sequences than that of this earlier work, and isolate a condition on the weights that gives stabilization of tensor product and branching multiplicities. We show that all the results of the previous article can be naturally generalized to this setting. We also prove some properties of the partially ordered set of dominant weights of indefinite Kac-Moody algebras, and use this to give a more concrete definition of a stable representation ring. Finally, we consider the classical sequences $B_n, C_n, D_n$ that fall outside the purview of the earlier work, and work out some simple conditions on the weights which imply stabilization.

Tensor product stabilization in Kac-Moody algebras

We consider a large class of series of symmetrizable Kac-Moody algebras (generically denoted X_n). This includes the classical series A_n as well as others like E_n whose members are of Indefinite type. The focus is to analyze the behavior of representations in the large n limit. Motivated by the classical theory of A_n, we consider tensor product decompositions of irreducible highest weight representations of X_n and study how these vary with n. The notion of ``double headed'' dominant weights is introduced. For such weights, we show that tensor product decompositions in X_n do stabilize, generalizing the classical results for A_n. The main tool used is Littelmann's celebrated path model. One can also use the stable multiplicities as structure constants to define a multiplication operation on a suitable space. We define this so called "stable representation ring'' and show that the multiplication operation is associative.
