SelfDocSeg: A Self-Supervised vision-based Approach towards Document Segmentation

Document layout analysis is a known problem to the documents research community and has been vastly explored yielding a multitude of solutions ranging from text mining, and recognition to graph-based representation, visual feature extraction, etc. However, most of the existing works have ignored the crucial fact regarding the scarcity of labeled data. With growing internet connectivity to personal life, an enormous amount of documents had been available in the public domain and thus making data annotation a tedious task. We address this challenge using self-supervision and unlike, the few existing self-supervised document segmentation approaches which use text mining and textual labels, we use a complete vision-based approach in pre-training without any ground-truth label or its derivative. Instead, we generate pseudo-layouts from the document images to pre-train an image encoder to learn the document object representation and localization in a self-supervised framework before fine-tuning it with an object detection model. We show that our pipeline sets a new benchmark in this context and performs at par with the existing methods and the supervised counterparts, if not outperforms. High Accuracy Determination of Rheological Properties of Drilling Fluids Using the Marsh Funnel

Efficient and safe drilling operations require precise determination of rheological properties in drilling fluids, encompassing dynamic viscosity for Newtonian fluids, and apparent viscosity, plastic viscosity, and yield point for non-Newtonian fluids. Conventional viscometers like vibrating wire, ZNN-D6, and Fann-35 offer high accuracy but are limited by cost and complexity in small-scale industries and labs. To address this, our research presents a novel mathematical model based on the Herschel-Bulkley model, aiming to accurately characterise drilling fluids' rheological properties using the Marsh funnel as an alternative device -- an economical, operator-friendly, and power-independent equipment. Drawing inspiration from seminal works by Li et al. (2020), Sedaghat (2017), and Guria et al. (2013), this innovative framework establishes a universal inverse linear relationship between a fluid's flow factor and final discharge time. For any fluid, it utilises its density and flow factor (or final discharge time) to determine all its rheological properties. Specifically, it evaluates dynamic viscosity for Newtonian fluids, apparent viscosity, plastic viscosity, and yield point for weighted non-Newtonian fluids, and apparent viscosity for non-weighted non-Newtonian fluids, with average systematic errors (against Fann-35 measurements) of 0.39%, 3.52%, 2.17%, 18.38%, and 5.84%, respectively, surpassing the precision of alternative mathematical models found in the aforementioned literature. Furthermore, while our framework's precision in plastic viscosity and yield point assessment of non-weighted non-Newtonian fluids slightly lags behind the framework of Li et al. (2020), it outperforms the model of Sedaghat (2017). In conclusion, despite minor limitations, our proposed mathematical model holds huge promise for drilling fluid rheology in petroleum, drilling, and related industries.

SwinDocSegmenter: An End-to-End Unified Domain Adaptive Transformer for Document Instance Segmentation

Instance-level segmentation of documents consists in assigning a class-aware and instance-aware label to each pixel of the image. It is a key step in document parsing for their understanding. In this paper, we present a unified transformer encoder-decoder architecture for en-to-end instance segmentation of complex layouts in document images. The method adapts a contrastive training with a mixed query selection for anchor initialization in the decoder. Later on, it performs a dot product between the obtained query embeddings and the pixel embedding map (coming from the encoder) for semantic reasoning. Extensive experimentation on competitive benchmarks like PubLayNet, PRIMA, Historical Japanese (HJ), and TableBank demonstrate that our model with SwinL backbone achieves better segmentation performance than the existing state-of-the-art approaches with the average precision of \textbf{93.72}, \textbf{54.39}, \textbf{84.65} and \textbf{98.04} respectively under one billion parameters. DocSegTr: An Instance-Level End-to-End Document Image Segmentation Transformer

Understanding documents with rich layouts is an essential step towards information extraction. Business intelligence processes often require the extraction of useful semantic content from documents at a large scale for subsequent decision-making tasks. In this context, instance-level segmentation of different document objects (title, sections, figures etc.) has emerged as an interesting problem for the document analysis and understanding community. To advance the research in this direction, we present a transformer-based model called \emph{DocSegTr} for end-to-end instance segmentation of complex layouts in document images. The method adapts a twin attention module, for semantic reasoning, which helps to become highly computationally efficient compared with the state-of-the-art. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work on transformer-based document segmentation. Extensive experimentation on competitive benchmarks like PubLayNet, PRIMA, Historical Japanese (HJ) and TableBank demonstrate that our model achieved comparable or better segmentation performance than the existing state-of-the-art approaches with the average precision of 89.4, 40.3, 83.4 and 93.3. This simple and flexible framework could serve as a promising baseline for instance-level recognition tasks in document images.

A Few Shot Multi-Representation Approach for N-gram Spotting in Historical Manuscripts

Despite recent advances in automatic text recognition, the performance remains moderate when it comes to historical manuscripts. This is mainly because of the scarcity of available labelled data to train the data-hungry Handwritten Text Recognition (HTR) models. The Keyword Spotting System (KWS) provides a valid alternative to HTR due to the reduction in error rate, but it is usually limited to a closed reference vocabulary. In this paper, we propose a few-shot learning paradigm for spotting sequences of a few characters (N-gram) that requires a small amount of labelled training data. We exhibit that recognition of important n-grams could reduce the system's dependency on vocabulary. In this case, an out-of-vocabulary (OOV) word in an input handwritten line image could be a sequence of n-grams that belong to the lexicon. An extensive experimental evaluation of our proposed multi-representation approach was carried out on a subset of Bentham's historical manuscript collections to obtain some really promising results in this direction.

Doc2Graph: a Task Agnostic Document Understanding Framework based on Graph Neural Networks

Geometric Deep Learning has recently attracted significant interest in a wide range of machine learning fields, including document analysis. The application of Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) has become crucial in various document-related tasks since they can unravel important structural patterns, fundamental in key information extraction processes. Previous works in the literature propose task-driven models and do not take into account the full power of graphs. We propose Doc2Graph, a task-agnostic document understanding framework based on a GNN model, to solve different tasks given different types of documents. We evaluated our approach on two challenging datasets for key information extraction in form understanding, invoice layout analysis and table detection. Our code is freely accessible on https://github.com/andreagemelli/doc2graph.

Text-DIAE: A Self-Supervised Degradation Invariant Autoencoders for Text Recognition and Document Enhancement

In this paper, we propose a Text-Degradation Invariant Auto Encoder (Text-DIAE), a self-supervised model designed to tackle two tasks, text recognition (handwritten or scene-text) and document image enhancement. We start by employing a transformer-based architecture that incorporates three pretext tasks as learning objectives to be optimized during pre-training without the usage of labeled data. Each of the pretext objectives is specifically tailored for the final downstream tasks. We conduct several ablation experiments that confirm the design choice of the selected pretext tasks. Importantly, the proposed model does not exhibit limitations of previous state-of-the-art methods based on contrastive losses, while at the same time requiring substantially fewer data samples to converge. Finally, we demonstrate that our method surpasses the state-of-the-art in existing supervised and self-supervised settings in handwritten and scene text recognition and document image enhancement. Our code and trained models will be made publicly available at~\url{ http://Upon_Acceptance}.

DocEnTr: An End-to-End Document Image Enhancement Transformer

Document images can be affected by many degradation scenarios, which cause recognition and processing difficulties. In this age of digitization, it is important to denoise them for proper usage. To address this challenge, we present a new encoder-decoder architecture based on vision transformers to enhance both machine-printed and handwritten document images, in an end-to-end fashion. The encoder operates directly on the pixel patches with their positional information without the use of any convolutional layers, while the decoder reconstructs a clean image from the encoded patches. Conducted experiments show a superiority of the proposed model compared to the state-of the-art methods on several DIBCO benchmarks. Code and models will be publicly available at: \url{https://github.com/dali92002/DocEnTR}.

Graph-based Deep Generative Modelling for Document Layout Generation

One of the major prerequisites for any deep learning approach is the availability of large-scale training data. When dealing with scanned document images in real world scenarios, the principal information of its content is stored in the layout itself. In this work, we have proposed an automated deep generative model using Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) to generate synthetic data with highly variable and plausible document layouts that can be used to train document interpretation systems, in this case, specially in digital mailroom applications. It is also the first graph-based approach for document layout generation task experimented on administrative document images, in this case, invoices.

DocSynth: A Layout Guided Approach for Controllable Document Image Synthesis

Despite significant progress on current state-of-the-art image generation models, synthesis of document images containing multiple and complex object layouts is a challenging task. This paper presents a novel approach, called DocSynth, to automatically synthesize document images based on a given layout. In this work, given a spatial layout (bounding boxes with object categories) as a reference by the user, our proposed DocSynth model learns to generate a set of realistic document images consistent with the defined layout. Also, this framework has been adapted to this work as a superior baseline model for creating synthetic document image datasets for augmenting real data during training for document layout analysis tasks. Different sets of learning objectives have been also used to improve the model performance. Quantitatively, we also compare the generated results of our model with real data using standard evaluation metrics. The results highlight that our model can successfully generate realistic and diverse document images with multiple objects. We also present a comprehensive qualitative analysis summary of the different scopes of synthetic image generation tasks. Lastly, to our knowledge this is the first work of its kind.

Ehrhart-Equivalence, Equidecomposability, and Unimodular Equivalence of Integral Polytopes

Ehrhart polynomials are extensively-studied structures that interpolate the discrete volume of the dilations of integral $n$-polytopes. The coefficients of Ehrhart polynomials, however, are still not fully understood, and it is not known when two polytopes have equivalent Ehrhart polynomials. In this paper, we establish a relationship between Ehrhart-equivalence and other forms of equivalence: the $\operatorname{GL}_n(\mathbb{Z})$-equidecomposability and unimodular equivalence of two integral $n$-polytopes in $\mathbb{R}^n$. We conjecture that any two Ehrhart-equivalent integral $n$-polytopes $P,Q\subset\mathbb{R}^n$ are $\operatorname{GL}_n(\mathbb{Z})$-equidecomposable into $\frac{1}{(n-1)!}$-th unimodular simplices, thereby generalizing the known cases of $n=1, 2, 3$. We also create an algorithm to check for unimodular equivalence of any two integral $n$-simplices in $\mathbb{R}^n$. We then find and prove a new one-to-one correspondence between unimodular equivalence of integral $2$-simplices and the unimodular equivalence of their $n$-dimensional pyramids. Finally, we prove the existence of integral $n$-simplices in $\mathbb{R}^n$ that are not unimodularly equivalent for all $n \ge 2$.

Fault Area Detection in Leaf Diseases using k-means Clustering

With increasing population the crisis of food is getting bigger day by day.In this time of crisis, the leaf disease of crops is the biggest problem in the food industry. In this paper, we have addressed that problem and proposed an efficient method to detect leaf disease.Leaf diseases can be detected from sample images of the leaf with the help of image processing and segmentation.Using k-means clustering and Otsu's method the faulty region in a leaf is detected which helps to determine proper course of action to be taken.Further the ratio of normal and faulty region if calculated would be able to predict if the leaf can be cured at all.

A Statistical Approach to Adult Census Income Level Prediction

The prominent inequality of wealth and income is a huge concern especially in the United States. The likelihood of diminishing poverty is one valid reason to reduce the world's surging level of economic inequality. The principle of universal moral equality ensures sustainable development and improve the economic stability of a nation. Governments in different countries have been trying their best to address this problem and provide an optimal solution. This study aims to show the usage of machine learning and data mining techniques in providing a solution to the income equality problem. The UCI Adult Dataset has been used for the purpose. Classification has been done to predict whether a person's yearly income in US falls in the income category of either greater than 50K Dollars or less equal to 50K Dollars category based on a certain set of attributes. The Gradient Boosting Classifier Model was deployed which clocked the highest accuracy of 88.16%, eventually breaking the benchmark accuracy of existing works.
