Coherent Interaction of Light and Single Molecules in a Dielectric Nanoguide

We present a new scheme for performing optical spectroscopy on single molecules. A glass capillary with a diameter of 600 nm filled with an organic crystal tightly guides the excitation light and provides a maximum spontaneous emission coupling factor ($β$) of 18% for the dye molecules doped in the organic crystal. Combination of extinction, fluorescence excitation and resonance fluorescence spectroscopy with microscopy provides high-resolution spatio-spectral access to a very large number of single molecules in a linear geometry. We discuss strategies for exploring a range of quantum optical phenomena, including coherent cooperative interactions in a mesoscopic ensemble of molecules mediated by a single mode of propagating photons.

High-cooperativity nanofiber laser

Cavity-free efficient coupling between emitters and guided modes is of great current interest for nonlinear quantum optics as well as efficient and scalable quantum information processing. In this work, we extend these activities to the coupling of organic dye molecules to a highly confined mode of a nanofiber, allowing mirrorless and low-threshold laser action in an effective mode volume of less than 100 femtoliters. We model this laser system based on semi-classical rate equations and present an analytic compact form of the laser output intensity. Despite the lack of a cavity structure, we achieve a coupling efficiency of the spontaneous emission to the waveguide mode of 0.07(0.01), in agreement with our calculations. In a further experiment, we also demonstrate the use of a plasmonic nanoparticle as a dispersive output coupler. Our laser architecture is promising for a number of applications in optofluidics and provides a fundamental model system for studying nonresonant feedback stimulated emission.

Gain-tunable optomechanical cooling in a laser cavity

We study the optical cooling of the resonator mirror in a cavity-optomechanical system that contains an optical gain medium. We find that the optical damping rate is vanishingly small for an incoherently pumped laser above threshold. In the presence of an external coherent drive however, the optical damping rate can be enhanced substantially with respect to that of a passive cavity. We show that the strength of the incoherent pump provides a conduit to tune the damping rate and the minimum attainable phonon number with the same radiation pressure force, and the latter can be lowered from that of a passive cavity if the thermal contribution is nonnegligible. We also show that the system can undergo a transition from the weak optomechanical coupling regime to the strong optomechanical coupling regime as the incoherent pump strength is varied.

Probing the dynamics of Anderson localization through spatial mapping

We study (1+1)D transverse localization of electromagnetic radiation at microwave frequencies directly by two-dimensional spatial scans. Since the longitudinal direction can be mapped onto time, our experiments provide unique snapshots of the build-up of localized waves. The evolution of the wave functions is compared with numerical calculations. Dissipation is shown to have no effect on the occurrence of transverse localization. Oscillations of the wave functions are observed in space and explained in terms of a beating between the eigenstates.

Critical scaling of polarization waves on a heterogeneous chain of resonators

The intensity distribution of electromagnetic polar waves in a chain of near-resonant weakly-coupled scatterers is investigated theoretically and supported by a numerical analysis. Critical scaling behavior is discovered for part of the eigenvalue spectrum due to the disorder-induced Anderson transition. This localization transition (in a formally one-dimensional system) is attributed to the long-range dipole-dipole interaction, which decays inverse linearly with distance for polarization perpendicular to the chain. For polarization parallel to the chain, with inverse squared long range coupling, all eigenmodes are shown to be localized. A comparison with the results for Hermitian power-law random banded matrices and other intermediate models is presented. This comparison reveals the significance of non-Hermiticity of the model and the periodic modulation of the coupling.

Classification of light sources and their interaction with active and passive environments

The emission properties of a molecular light source depend on its optical and chemical environment. This dependence, however, is different for various light sources. We present a general classification of sources by introducing the concepts of Constant Amplitude and Constant Power Sources. The unforeseen consequences of this classification are illustrated for photonic studies by random laser experiments. Comparison of the experimental results with properly customized rate equations identifies the type of light source in the gain medium and an estimate for its quantum efficiency. Our results require a major revision of source studies in multiple scattering media.

Observation of multifractality in Anderson localization of ultrasound

We report the first experimental observation of strong multifractality in wave functions at the Anderson localization transition in open three-dimensional elastic networks. Our results confirm the recently predicted symmetry of the multifractal exponents. We have discovered that the result of multifractal analysis of the real data depends on the excitation scheme used in the experiment.

Varying the effective refractive index to measure optical transport in random media

We introduce a new approach for measuring both the effective medium and the transport properties of light propagation in heterogeneous media. Our method utilizes the conceptual equivalence of frequency variation with a change in the effective index of refraction. Experimentally, we measure intensity correlations via spectrally resolved refractive index tuning, controlling the latter via changes in the ambient pressure. Our experimental results perfectly match a generalized transport theory that incorporates the effective medium and predicts a precise value for the diffusion constant. Thus, we directly confirm the applicability of the effective medium concept in strongly scattering materials.

Experimental observation of second-harmonic generation and diffusion inside random media

We have experimentally measured the distribution of the second-harmonic intensity that is generated inside a highly-scattering slab of porous gallium phosphide. Two complementary techniques for determining the distribution are used. First, the spatial distribution of second-harmonic light intensity at the side of a cleaved slab has been recorded. Second, the total second-harmonic radiation at each side of the slab has been measured for several samples at various wavelengths. By combining these measurements with a diffusion model for second-harmonic generation that incorporates extrapolated boundary conditions, we present a consistent picture of the distribution of the second-harmonic intensity inside the slab. We find that the ratio $\ell_{2ω}/L_c$ of the mean free path at the second-harmonic frequency to the coherence length, which was suggested by some earlier calculations, cannot describe the second-harmonic yield in our samples. For describing the total second-harmonic yield, our experiments show that the scattering parameter at the fundamental frequency $\k_{1ω}\ell_{1ω}$ is the most relevant parameter in our type of samples.
