Generalised matter couplings in general relativity

A new class of modified theory of gravity is introduced where the volume form becomes dynamical. This approach is motivated by unimodular gravity and can also be related to Brans-Dicke theory. On the level of the action, the only change made will be through the volume element which is used in the integration. This is achieved by the introduction of a fourth order tensor which connects the spacetime metric to the new volume form. Using dynamical systems techniques, this model is studied in the context of cosmology. The most interesting result is that there exist parameter ranges where this model starts undergoing an epoch of accelerated expansion, followed by a decelerating expansion which evolves to a final epoch of accelerated expansion.

On the junction conditions in $f(R)$-gravity with torsion

Junction conditions are discussed within the framework of $f(R)$-gravity with torsion. After deriving general junction conditions, the cases of coupling to a Dirac field and a spin fluid are explicitly dealt with. The main differences with respect to Einstein--Cartan--Sciama--Kibble theory $\left(f(R)=R\right)$ are outlined.

On the Anisotropic Interior Solutions in Hořava Gravity and Einstein-æther Theory

We find a reconstruction algorithm able to generate all the static spherically symmetric interior solutions in the framework of Hořava gravity and Einstein-æther theory in presence of anisotropic fluids. We focus for simplicity on the case of a static æther finding a large class of possible viable interior star solutions which present a very rich phenomenology. We study one illustrative example in more detail.

The covariant Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff equations II: The anisotropic case

We generalise the covariant Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff equations proposed in arXiv:1709.02818 [gr-qc] to the case of static and spherically symmetric spacetimes with anisotropic sources. The extended equations allow a detailed analysis of the role of the anisotropic terms in the interior solution of relativistic stars and lead to the generalisation of some well known solutions of this type. We show that, like in the isotropic case, one can define generating theorems for the anisotropic Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff equations. We also find that it is possible to define a reconstruction algorithm able to generate a double infinity of interior solutions. Among these, we derive a class of solutions that can represent "quasi-isotropic" stars.

The covariant Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff equations I: The isotropic case

We construct a covariant version of the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff equations in the case of isotropic sources. The new equations make evident the mathematical problems in the determination of interior solutions of relativistic stellar objects. Using a reconstruction algorithm we find two physically interesting generalisations of previously known stellar interior solutions. The variables that we use also allow an easier formulation of known generating theorems for solutions associated to relativistic stellar objects.

Cosmological solutions in generalized hybrid metric-Palatini gravity

We construct exact solutions representing a Friedmann-Lemaître-Robsertson-Walker (FLRW) universe in a generalized hybrid metric-Palatini theory. By writing the gravitational action in a scalar-tensor representation, the new solutions are obtained by either making an ansatz on the scale factor or on the effective potential. Among other relevant results, we show that it is possible to obtain exponentially expanding solutions for flat universes even when the cosmology is not purely vacuum. We then derive the classes of actions for the original theory which generate these solutions.

Phase space of modified Gauss-Bonnet gravity

We investigate the evolution of non vacuum Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) with any spatial curvature in the context of Gauss-Bonnet gravity. The analysis employs a new method which enables us to explore the phase space of any specific theory of this class. We consider several examples, discussing the transition from a decelerating into an acceleration universe within these theories. We also deduce from the dynamical equations some general conditions on the form of the action which guarantee the presence of specific behaviours like the the emergence of accelerated expansion. As in $f(R)$ gravity, our analysis shows that there is a set of initial conditions for which these models have a finite time singularity which can be an attractor. The presence of this instability also in the Gauss-Bonnet gravity is to be ascribed to the fourth-order derivative in the field equations, i.e., is the direct consequence of the higher order of the equations.

Generalising the coupling between spacetime and matter

We explore the idea that the coupling between matter and spacetime is more complex than the one originally envisioned by Einstein. We propose that such coupling takes the form of a new fundamental tensor in the Einstein field equations. We then show that the introduction of this tensor can account for dark phenomenology in General Relativity, maintaining a weak field limit compatible with standard Newtonian gravitation. The same paradigm can be applied any other theory of gravitation. We show, as an example, that in the context of conformal gravity a generalised coupling is able to solve compatibility issues between the matter and the gravitational sector.

The 1+1+2 formalism for Scalar-Tensor gravity

We use the 1+1+2 covariant approach to clarify a number of aspects of spherically symmetric solutions of non-minimally coupled scalar tensor theories. Particular attention is focused on the extension of Birkhoff's theorem and the nature of quasi-local horizons in this context.

A new geometrical look at Ostrogradsky procedure

Making use of the modern techniques of non-holonomic geometry and constrained variational calculus, a revisitation of Ostrogradsky's Hamiltonian formulation of the evolution equations determined by a Lagrangian of order >= 2 in the derivatives of the configuration variables is presented.

On dynamical systems approaches and methods in $f(R)$ cosmology

We discuss dynamical systems approaches and methods applied to flat Robertson-Walker models in $f(R)$-gravity. We argue that a complete description of the solution space of a model requires a global state space analysis that motivates globally covering state space adapted variables. This is shown explicitly by an illustrative example, $f(R) = R + αR^2$, $α> 0$, for which we introduce new regular dynamical systems on global compactly extended state spaces for the Jordan and Einstein frames. This example also allows us to illustrate several local and global dynamical systems techniques involving, e.g., blow ups of nilpotent fixed points, center manifold analysis, averaging, and use of monotone functions. As a result of applying dynamical systems methods to globally state space adapted dynamical systems formulations, we obtain pictures of the entire solution spaces in both the Jordan and the Einstein frames. This shows, e.g., that due to the domain of the conformal transformation between the Jordan and Einstein frames, not all the solutions in the Jordan frame are completely contained in the Einstein frame. We also make comparisons with previous dynamical systems approaches to $f(R)$ cosmology and discuss their advantages and disadvantages.

Dynamical system analysis for nonminimal torsion-matter coupled gravity

In this work, we perform a detailed dynamical analysis for the cosmological applications of a nonminimal torsion-matter coupled gravity. Two alternative formalisms are proposed, which enable one to choose between the easier approach for a given problem, and furthermore, we analyze six specific models. In general, we extract fixed points corresponding either to dark-matter dominated, scaling decelerated solutions, or to dark-energy dominated accelerated solutions. Additionally, we find that there is a small parameter region in which the model can experience the transition from the matter epoch to a dark-energy era. These features are in agreement with the observed universe evolution, and make the theory a successful candidate for the description of Nature.

A new approach to the analysis of the phase space of f(R)-gravity

We propose a new dynamical system formalism for the analysis of f(R) cosmologies. The new approach eliminates the need for cumbersome inversions to close the dynamical system and allows the analysis of the phase space of f(R)-gravity models which cannot be investigated using the standard technique. Differently form previously proposed similar techniques, the new method is constructed in such a way to associate to the fixed points scale factors, which contain four integration constants (i.e. solutions of fourth order differential equations). In this way a new light is shed on the physical meaning of the fixed points. We apply this technique to some f(R) Lagrangians relevant for inflationary and dark energy models.

A dynamical system analysis of hybrid metric-Palatini cosmologies

The so called $f(X)$ hybrid metric-Palatini gravity presents a unique viable generalisation of the $f(R)$ theories within the metric-affine formalism. Here the cosmology of the $f(X)$ theories is studied using the dynamical system approach. The method consists of formulating the propagation equation in terms of suitable (expansion-normalised) variables as an autonomous system. The fixed points of the system then represent exact cosmological solutions described by power-law or de Sitter expansion. The formalism is applied to two classes of $f(X)$ models, revealing both standard cosmological fixed points and new accelerating solutions that can be attractors in the phase space. In addition, the fixed point with vanishing expansion rate are considered with special care in order to characterise the stability of Einstein static spaces and bouncing solutions.

Torsion gravity with non-minimally coupled fermionic field: some cosmological models

We investigate some cosmological models arising from a non-minimal coupling of a fermionic field to gravity in the geometrical setting of Einstein-Cartan-Sciama-Kibble gravity. The role played by the non-minimal coupling together with torsion in facing problems such as cosmological singularity, inflation and dark energy is discussed.

Renormalizability of the Dirac Equation in Torsion-Gravity with Non-Minimal Coupling

We will consider the torsional completion of gravity for a background filled with Dirac matter fields, studying what happens when fermionic non-minimal coupling is taken into account: we will show that, although non-minimal couplings are usually disregarded because of their ill-defined behaviour in ultraviolet regimes, this is due to the fact that torsion is commonly neglected, whereas when torsion is not left aside, even non-minimal couplings behave properly. In detail, we will see that non-minimal coupling allows to renormalize the Dirac equation even when torsion is taken into consideration and that in some type of non-minimally coupled models parity-oddness might be present even in the gravitational sector. In addition, we will show that in the presence of the considered non-minimal coupling, torsion is able to evade cosmological singularities as it can happen in the minimal coupling case and in some other non--minimally coupled theory. In the course of the paper, we shall consider a specific interaction as prototype to study this fermionic non-minimal coupling, but we will try to present results that do not depend on the actual structure of the non-minimal couplings by investigating alternative types of interaction.

Non minimally coupled condensate cosmologies: a phase space analysis

We present an analysis of the phase space of cosmological models based on a non minimal coupling between the geometry and a fermionic condensate. We obtain that the strong constraint coming from the Dirac equations allows a detailed design of the cosmology of these models and at the same time guarantees an evolution towards a state indistinguishable from General Relativistic cosmological models. In this light, we show how the use of some specific potentials is able to reproduce naturally two de Sitter phases separated by a power law expansion which could be an interesting model for the unification of an inflationary phase and a dark energy era.

An Autonomous Reference Frame for Relativistic GNSS

Current GNSS systems rely on global reference frames which are fixed to the Earth (via the ground stations) so their precision and stability in time are limited by our knowledge of the Earth dynamics. These drawbacks could be avoided by giving to the constellation of satellites the possibility of constituting by itself a primary and autonomous positioning system, without any a priori realization of a terrestrial reference frame. Our work shows that it is possible to construct such a system, an Autonomous Basis of Coordinates, via emission coordinates. Here we present the idea of the Autonomous Basis of Coordinates and its implementation in the perturbed space-time of Earth, where the motion of satellites, light propagation, and gravitational perturbations are treated in the formalism of general relativity.
