Double Groupoids and the Symplectic Category

We introduce the notion of a symplectic hopfoid, which is a "groupoid-like" object in the category of symplectic manifolds where morphisms are given by canonical relations. Such groupoid-like objects arise when applying a version of the cotangent functor to the structure maps of a Lie groupoid. We show that such objects are in one-to-one correspondence with symplectic double groupoids, generalizing a result of Zakrzewski concerning symplectic double groups and Hopf algebra objects in the aforementioned category. The proof relies on the fact that one can realize the core of a symplectic double groupoid as a symplectic quotient of the total space. The resulting constructions apply more generally to give a correspondence between double Lie groupoids and groupoid-like objects in the category of smooth manifolds and smooth relations, and we show that the cotangent functor relates the two constructions.

Cores of Symplectic Double Groupoids via Reduction

We use symplectic reduction to give a new construction of the core $C$ of a symplectic double groupoid $D$ as the common leaf space of characteristic foliations associated to various coisotropic submanifolds of $D$. In the case of the cotangent double groupoid of a Lie groupoid $G$, the canonical relations arising from this process turn out to be cotangent lifts of structure maps associated to $G$. We also show that under this reduction procedure the double groupoid structure on $D$ descends to a groupoid structure on the leaf space above, recovering the core groupoid structure on $C$ of Brown and Mackenzie.

Double Groupoids, Orbifolds, and the Symplectic Category

Motivated by an attempt to better understand the notion of a symplectic stack, we introduce the notion of a symplectic hopfoid, which should be thought of as the analog of a groupoid in the so-called symplectic category. After reviewing some foundational material on canonical relations and this category, we show that symplectic hopfoids provide a characterization of symplectic double groupoids in these terms. Then, we show how such structures may be used to produce examples of symplectic orbifolds, and conjecture that all symplectic orbifolds arise via a similar construction. The symplectic structures on the orbifolds produced arise naturally from the use of canonical relations. The characterization of symplectic double groupoids mentioned above is made possible by an observation which provides various ways of realizing the core of a symplectic double groupoid as a symplectic quotient of the total space, and includes as a special case a result of Zakrzewski concerning Hopf algebra objects in the symplectic category. This point of view also leads to a new proof that the core of a symplectic double groupoid itself inherits the structure of a symplectic groupoid. Similar constructions work more generally for any double Lie groupoid---producing what we call a Lie hopfoid---and we describe the sense in which a version of the "cotangent functor" relates such hopfoid structures.
