Light Deflection due to Spinoptic Effects in Parametrized and Spherically Symmetric Hairy Black Holes

In the standard geometric optics approximation, null rays propagating in a spherically symmetric black hole background follow planar geodesics. This picture changes, however, when the helicity-dependent effects of light are incorporated into the dynamics. Specifically, the interaction between the helicity of light and the spacetime curvature induces a significant angular deflection out of the geodesic plane. In this paper, we employ the spinoptics formalism to study light deflection due to the helicity-curvature interaction in two spherically symmetric geometries: the Rezzolla--Zhidenko (RZ) parametrized metric, and a hairy regular black hole solution obtained via gravitational decoupling. Our results reveal clear imprints of both the RZ parametrization coefficients and the hairy black hole parameter on the deflection angle. Furthermore, we assess the viability of using the RZ parametrization to mimic the regular hairy black hole, discussing the validity and limitations of such an approximation.

Does a wormhole survive a cosmological bounce?

We investigate whether a dynamical wormhole could survive in a universe that undergoes a cosmological bounce. First, the conditions under which a wormhole could persist from a contracting to an expanding phase of the cosmos are presented. Then, the only two known cosmological solutions of Einstein's equations representing wormholes are analyzed, and it is shown that both dynamical wormholes exist for all cosmic times on both sides of a bouncing universe and at the bounce itself. We also provide a detailed analysis of the causal structure of such spacetimes and the matter content of the wormhole. Finally, some possible astrophysical manifestations of surviving wormholes in a bouncing universe are mentioned. Our results show that, at least for the Kim and Pérez-Raia Neto solutions, there is no topology change in the chosen cosmological model with a bounce.

Dynamical and thermodynamical stability of a charged thin-shell wormhole

A study of the dynamical and thermodynamical stability of a charged thin-shell wormhole built by gluing two Reissner-Nordström geometries is presented. The charge on the shell is linearly related to the matter content. For the dynamical stability, a concise inequality is obtained, valid for any barotropic equation of state that relates the pressure with the energy density at the throat. A thermodynamical description of the system is introduced, which leads to the temperature and the electric potentials. Adopting a linear equation of state for the pressure and a definite form for the entropy function, the set of equilibrium configurations that are both dynamically and thermodynamically stable is found.

Report of the Topical Group on Cosmic Probes of Fundamental Physics for for Snowmass 2021

Cosmic Probes of Fundamental Physics take two primary forms: Very high energy particles (cosmic rays, neutrinos, and gamma rays) and gravitational waves. Already today, these probes give access to fundamental physics not available by any other means, helping elucidate the underlying theory that completes the Standard Model. The last decade has witnessed a revolution of exciting discoveries such as the detection of high-energy neutrinos and gravitational waves. The scope for major developments in the next decades is dramatic, as we detail in this report.

Black hole in asymmetric cosmological bounce

We determine the causal structure of the McVittie spacetime for a cosmological model with an asymmetric bounce. The analysis includes the computation of trapping horizons, regular, trapped, and anti-trapped regions, and the integration of the trajectories of radial null geodesics before, during, and after the bounce. We find a trapped region since the beginning of the contracting phase up to shortly before the bounce, thus showing the existence of a black hole. When the universe reaches a certain minimum scale in the contracting phase, the trapping horizons disappear and the central singularity becomes naked. These results suggest that neither a contracting nor an expanding universe can accommodate a black hole at all times.

Dynamical black hole in a bouncing universe

We analyze the causal structure of McVittie spacetime for a classical bouncing cosmological model. In particular, we compute the trapping horizons of the metric and integrate the trajectories of radial null geodesics before, during, and after the bounce takes place. In the contracting phase up to the occurrence of the bounce, a dynamical black hole is present. When the universe reaches a certain minimum scale, the trapping horizons disappear and the black hole ceases to exist. After the bounce, the central weak singularity becomes naked. In the expanding phase, for large positive values of the cosmic time, the behaviour of null geodesics indicates that the solution contains a black hole. These results suggest that neither a contracting nor an expanding universe can accommodate a black hole at all times.

Hot thermal universe endowed with massive dark vector fields and the Hubble tension

The value of Hubble constant inferred from Planck measurements of anisotropies in the cosmic microwave background is at $4.4σ$ tension with direct astronomical measurements at low redshifts. Very recently, it has been conjectured that this discrepancy may be reconciled if a small fraction of the dark matter is described by three mutually orthogonal vector fields of the same mass. We study the thermal description of this model and use the observationally-inferred primordial fractions of baryonic mass in $^4{\rm He}$ to constrain its phase space. We show that while the sterile vector fields may help to alleviate a little bit the existing tension in the measurements of the Hubble parameter, they cannot eliminate the discrepancy between low- and high-redshift observations.

Electromagnetic shift arising from the Heisenberg-Euler dipole

We show that photons may be redshifted or blueshifted when interacting with the field of an overcritical dipole, which incorporates the one-loop QED corrections coming from vacuum polarization. Using the effective metric, it follows that such effect depends on the polarization of the photon. The shifts, plotted against the azimuthal angle for various values of the magnetic field, may show an intensity comparable to the gravitational redshift for a magnetar. To obtain these results, we have corrected previous literature.

An analysis of a regular black hole interior model

We analyze the thermodynamical properties of the regular static and spherically symmetric black hole interior model presented by Mboyne and Kazanas. Equations for the thermodynamical quantities valid for an arbitrary density profile are deduced, and from them we show that the model is thermodynamically unstable. Evidence is also presented pointing to its dynamical instability. The gravitational entropy of this solution based on the Weyl curvature conjecture is calculated, following the recipe given by Rudjord, Gr$\varnothing$n and Sigbj$\varnothing$rn, and it is shown to have the expected behavior.

Constraining f(R) theories with cosmography

A method to set constraints on the parameters of extended theories of gravitation is presented. It is based on the comparison of two series expansions of any observable that depends on H(z). The first expansion is of the cosmographical type, while the second uses the dependence of H with z furnished by a given type of extended theory. When applied to f(R) theories together with the redshift drift, the method yields limits on the parameters of two examples (the theory of Hu and Sawicki (2007), and the exponential gravity introduced by Linder (2009)) that are compatible with or more stringent than the existing ones, as well as a limit for a previously unconstrained parameter.

Accretion disks around black holes in modified strong gravity

Stellar-mass black holes offer what is perhaps the best scenario to test theories of gravity in the strong-field regime. In particular, f(R) theories, which have been widely discuss in a cosmological context, can be constrained through realistic astrophysical models of phenomena around black holes. We aim at building radiative models of thin accretion disks for both Schwarzschild and Kerr black holes in f(R) gravity. We study particle motion in f(R)-Schwarzschild and Kerr space-times. We present the spectral energy distribution of the accretion disk around constant Ricci scalar f(R) black holes, and constrain specific f(R) prescriptions using features of these systems. A precise determination of both the spin and accretion rate onto black holes along with X-ray observations of their thermal spectrum might allow to identify deviations of gravity from General Relativity. We use recent data on the high-mass X-ray binary Cygnus X-1 to restrict the values of the parameters of a class of f(R) models.

Propagation of perturbations in non-linear spin-2 theories

In this communication I analyze the problem of complete exceptionality of wave propagation in a class of spin 2 field theories. I show that, under the imposition of the good weak-field limit, only two Lagrangians are completely exceptional. These are the linear Fierz Lagrangian, and a Born-Infeld-like Lagrangian. As a byproduct, I reobtain the result that in a nonlinear theory, spin 2 particles follow an effective metric that depends on the nonlinearities of the Lagrangian.

The world is not enough

We show that the 5-dimensional model introduced by Randall and Sundrum is (half of) a wormhole, and that this is a general result in models of the RS type. We also discuss the gravitational trapping of a scalar particle in 5-d spacetimes. Finally, we present a simple model of brane-world cosmology in which the background is a static anti-de Sitter manifold, and the location of the two 3-branes is determined by the technique of ``surgical grafting''.

Inhomogeneous Multidimensional Cosmologies

Einstein's equations for a 4+n-dimensional inhomogeneous space-time are presented, and a special family of solutions is exhibited for an arbitrary n. The solutions depend on two arbitrary functions of time. The time development of a particular member of this family is studied. This solution exhibits a singularity at t=0 and dynamical compactification of the n dimensions. It is shown that the behaviour of the system in the 4-dimensional i.e. post-compactification phase is constrained by the way in which the compactified dimensions are stabilized. The fluid that generates the solution is analyzed by means of the energy conditions.

Cylindrically symmetric spinning Brans-Dicke spacetimes with closed timelike curves

We present here three new solutions of Brans-Dicke theory for a stationary geometry with cylindrical symmetry in the presence of matter in rigid rotation with $T^μ_μ\neq 0$. All the solutions have eternal closed timelike curves in some region of the spacetime, the size of which depends on $ω$. Moreover, two of them do not go over a solution of general relativity in the limit $ω\to \infty$.

Steps towards an axiomatic pregeometry of space-time

We present a deductive theory of space-time which is realistic, objective, and relational. It is realistic because it assumes the existence of physical things endowed with concrete properties. It is objective because it can be formulated without any reference to cognoscent subjects or sensorial fields. Finally, it is relational because it assumes that space-time is not a thing but a complex of relations among things. In this way, the original program of Leibniz is consummated, in the sense that space is ultimately an order of coexistents, and time is an order of succesives. In this context, we show that the metric and topological properties of Minkowskian space-time are reduced to relational properties of concrete things. We also sketch how our theory can be extended to encompass a Riemmanian space-time.

Evolving wormhole geometries

We present here analytical solutions of General Relativity that describe evolving wormholes with a non-constant redshift function. We show that the matter that threads these wormholes is not necessarily exotic. Finally, we investigate some issues concerning WEC violation and human traversability in these time-dependent geometries.
