Quantum Measurement-induced Dynamics of Many-Body Ultracold Bosonic and Fermionic Systems in Optical Lattices

Trapping ultracold atoms in optical lattices enabled numerous breakthroughs uniting several disciplines. Coupling these systems to quantized light leads to a plethora of new phenomena and has opened up a new field of study. Here we introduce a physically novel source of competition in a many-body strongly correlated system: We prove that quantum backaction of global measurement is able to efficiently compete with intrinsic short-range dynamics of an atomic system. The competition becomes possible due to the ability to change the spatial profile of a global measurement at a microscopic scale comparable to the lattice period without the need of single site addressing. In coherence with a general physical concept, where new competitions typically lead to new phenomena, we demonstrate novel nontrivial dynamical effects such as large-scale multimode oscillations, long-range entanglement and correlated tunneling, as well as selective suppression and enhancement of dynamical processes beyond the projective limit of the quantum Zeno effect. We demonstrate both the break-up and protection of strongly interacting fermion pairs by measurement. Such a quantum optical approach introduces into many-body physics novel processes, objects, and methods of quantum engineering, including the design of many-body entangled environments for open systems.

Quantum properties of light scattered from structured many-body phases of ultracold atoms in quantum optical lattices

Quantum trapping potentials for ultracold gases change the landscape of classical properties of scattered light and matter. The atoms in a quantum many-body correlated phase of matter change the properties of light and vice versa. The properties of both light and matter can be tuned by design and depend on the interplay between long-range (nonlocal) interactions mediated by an optical cavity and short-range processes of the atoms. Moreover, the quantum properties of light get significantly altered by this interplay, leading the light to have nonclassical features. Further, these nonclassical features can be designed and optimised.

Quantum optical lattices for emergent many-body phases of ultracold atoms

Confining ultracold gases in cavities creates a paradigm of quantum trapping potentials. We show that this allows to bridge models with global collective and short-range interactions as novel quantum phases possess properties of both. Some phases appear solely due to quantum light-matter correlations. Due to global, but spatially structured, interaction, the competition between quantum matter and light waves leads to multimode structures even in single-mode cavities, including delocalized dimers of matter-field coherences (bonds), beyond density orders as supersolids and density waves.

Probing and Manipulating Fermionic and Bosonic Quantum Gases with Quantum Light

We study the atom-light interaction in the fully quantum regime, with focus on off-resonant light scattering into a cavity from ultracold atoms trapped in an optical lattice. The detection of photons allows the quantum nondemolition (QND) measurement of quantum correlations of the atomic ensemble, distinguishing between different quantum states. We analyse the entanglement between light and matter and show how it can be exploited for realising multimode macroscopic quantum superpositions such as Schrödinger cat states, for both bosons and fermions. We provide examples utilising different measurement schemes, and study their robustness to decoherence. Finally, we address the regime where the optical lattice potential is a quantum dynamical variable and is modified by the atomic state, leading to novel quantum phases, and significantly altering the phase diagram of the atomic system.

Probing Matter-Field and Atom-Number Correlations in Optical Lattices by Global Nondestructive Addressing

We show that light scattering from an ultracold gas reveals not only density correlations, but also matter-field interference at its shortest possible distance in an optical lattice, which defines key properties such as tunneling and matter-field phase gradients. This signal can be enhanced by concentrating probe light between lattice sites rather than at density maxima. As addressing between two single sites is challenging, we focus on global nondestructive scattering, allowing probing order parameters, matter-field quadratures and their squeezing. The scattering angular distribution displays peaks even if classical diffraction is forbidden and we derive generalized Bragg conditions. Light scattering distinguishes all phases in the Mott insulator - superfluid - Bose glass phase transition.

Glassy dynamics and Landau-Zener phenomena in trapped quasi-one dimensional coupled Bose-Einstein condensates

The purpose of this article is to address the dynamics of an interacting Bose-Einstein condensate confined in coupled one-dimensional Landau-Zener arrays under the influence of disorder and harmonic confinement. In particular, we concentrate in studying the interplay of disorder and interparticle interaction on the transfer of atoms depending on the speed of Landau-Zener sweeps. A dynamical phase diagram summarizing the final situation across ground state and inverse sweeps is given in terms of the effect of disorder, interaction and the speed of the sweeps.

Vortices on demand in multicomponent Bose-Einstein condensates

We present a simple mechanism to produce vortices at any desired spatial locations in harmonically trapped Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC) with multicomponent spin states coupled to external transverse and axial magnetic fields. The vortices appear at the spatial points where the spin-transverse field interaction vanishes and, depending on the multipolar magnetic field order, the vortices can acquire different predictable topological charges. We explicitly demonstrate our findings, both numerically and analytically, by analyzing a 2D BEC via the Gross-Pitaevskii equation for atomic systems with either two or three internal states. We further show that, by an spontaneous symmetry breaking mechanism, vortices can appear in any spin component, unless symmetry is externally broken at the outset by an axial field. We suggest that this scenario may be tested using an ultracold gas of $^{87}$Rb occupying all three $F = 1$ states in an optical trap.

The Contact in the BCS-BEC crossover for finite range interacting ultracold Fermi gases

Using mean-field theory for the Bardeen-Cooper-Schriefer (BCS) to the Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) crossover we investigate the ground state thermodynamic properties of an interacting homogeneous Fermi gas. The interatomic interactions modeled through a finite range potential allows us to explore the entire region from weak to strong interacting regimes with no approximations. To exhibit the thermodynamic behavior as a function of the potential parameters in the whole crossover region, we concentrate in studying the contact variable, the thermodynamic conjugate of the inverse of the s-wave scattering length. Our analysis allows us to validate the mean-field approach across the whole crossover. It also leads to predict a quantum transition-like in the case when the potential range becomes large. This finding is a direct consequence of the k-dependent energy gap for finite interaction range potentials.

Phase diagram of Landau-Zener phenomena in coupled one-dimensional Bose quantum fluids

We study stationary and dynamical properties of the many-body Landau-Zener dynamics of a Bose quantum fluid confined in two coupled one-dimensional chains, using a many-body generalization recently reported [Y.-A. Chen et al.], within the decoupling approximation and the one-level band scheme. The energy spectrum evidences the structure of the avoided level crossings as a function of the on-site inter particle interaction strength. On the dynamical side, a phase diagram of the transfer efficiency across ground-state and inverse sweeps is presented. A totally different scenario with respect to the original single-particle Landau-Zener scheme is found for ground-state sweeps, in which a breakdown of the adiabatic region emerges as the sweep rate decreases. On the contrary, the transfer efficiency across inverse sweeps reveals consistent results with the single-particle Landau-Zener predictions. In the strong coupling regime, we find that there is a critical value of the on-site interaction for which the transfer of particles starts to vanish independently of the sweep rate. Our results are in qualitative agreement with those of the experimental counterpart.

Ground state properties of a three-site Bose-Fermi ring with a small number of atoms

We investigate a three-site ring system with a small number of quantum degenerate bosons and fermions. By means of the exact diagonalization of the Bose-Fermi-Hubbard Hamiltonian, we show that the symmetry of the ground state configuration is a function of both the boson-boson and the inter-species interaction in the system. The phase diagram of the system, constructed by computing the exact two-body spatial correlations, reveals nontrivial insulating phases that exist even in the strong bosonic tunneling limit and for incommensurate filling of bosons. These insulating phases are due to the inter-species interactions in the system and are not necessarily accompanied by the suppression of the particle number fluctuations.
