Probing dark energy dynamics through a new CPL-type $Om(z)$ parametrization in FLRW Universe

In this work, we investigate a CPL-type $Om(z)$ parametrization given by $Om(z)=l+m\left(\frac{z}{1+z}\right)$ to study the evolution of dark energy and possible deviations from the standard $Λ$CDM cosmology. The model reduces to the flat $Λ$CDM scenario for $m=0$, while $m\neq0$ indicates dynamical evolution. The free parameters are constrained using Pantheon+SH0ES (PPS), Cosmic Chronometer (CC), and DESI BAO DR2 observations through Markov Chain Monte Carlo analysis. The obtained constraints yield $72.48\lesssim H_0\lesssim72.97~\mathrm{km\,s^{-1}\,Mpc^{-1}}$, while the evolution parameter remains negative for all dataset combinations, leading to decreasing $Om(z)$ evolution and favoring quintessence-like behaviour. The combined PPS+CC+DR2 analysis shifts the evolution closer to the $Λ$CDM limit. The statistical analysis based on $χ^2$, AIC, and BIC indicates that the proposed model remains statistically competitive with $Λ$CDM. The deceleration parameter and total equation of state are further analyzed to examine the cosmic evolution. The transition from deceleration to acceleration occurs within $z_{tr}\approx0.66-1.01$, while the present values vary within $-0.459\lesssim q_0\lesssim-0.325$ and $-0.639\lesssimω_0\lesssim-0.550$ depending on the datasets. Overall, the proposed parametrization provides a flexible framework for studying late-time cosmic evolution.

Constraining Dark Energy Dynamics in Curved Spacetime with Current Observations

We investigate a dark energy (DE) equation of state (EoS) parametrization in a curved spacetime using current observations. We constrain the model parameters by using observational Hubble data from Cosmic Chronometer (CC), Pantheon Plus SH0ES (PPS), and DESI BAO DR2, along with their reconstructed datasets using an Artificial Neural Network (ANN). The parameter $α$ is constrained as $α\approx 0.35 (\approx 0.56)$ from original (reconstructed) data. This means reconstruction pushes the model toward a significant deviation from the standard $Λ$CDM framework. We find that the curvature parameter $Ω_{k0} = 0.068 \pm 0.029$ at 68\% CL with original data, suggests a slightly open universe, whereas with the reconstruction method, $Ω_{k0} = -0.131 \pm 0.032$ at 68\% CL suggests a closed universe. This shift in the mean value indicates that the reconstruction method is highly sensitive to curvature. We perform statistical model comparison criteria, namely, AIC and BIC to assess the reliability of our framework.

Bouncing Cosmological Models and Energy Conditions in $f(Q, L_m)$ gravity

This study explores the bouncing solutions within the framework of modified $f(Q, L_m)$ gravity. We examine four prominent bouncing models, the symmetric bounce, super bounce, oscillatory bounce, and matter bounce, each of which has been extensively analyzed in the context of modified gravity theories. Our investigation focuses on the behavior of the Hubble parameter, the evolution of the scale factor, and the equation of state (EoS) parameters. Notably, the dynamics of the scale factor and Hubble parameter effectively support the bouncing scenario. During the bouncing epoch, the EoS parameters fall within the phantom region, reinforcing the viability of the bounce. To further validate the bouncing scenario, we assess the energy conditions associated with each model. Our findings reveal a violation of the null energy condition at the bouncing epoch, which successfully characterizes the model's bouncing behavior.

Observational tests of \texorpdfstring{$Λ(t)$}{Lambda(t)} cosmology in light of DESI DR2

In this article, we investigate two phenomenological decaying vacuum cosmological models describing the accelerated expansion of the Universe. We constrain the model parameters using a Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) technique with recent datasets, including cosmic chronometer (CC), Pantheon+SH0ES (PPS), and DESI BAO data release (DR2). Our analysis provides constraints from PPS, PPS+CC, and the joint PPS+CC+DR2 datasets for both models. All datasets favor $H_0 \simeq 72.53$--$73.01~\mathrm{Km\,s^{-1}\,Mpc^{-1}}$, while $Ω_{m0}$ is higher with PPS alone and decreases to standard paradigm estimates with the inclusion of additional data. The evolution parameter is $n \approx 0.30$ from joint analysis, indicating a mild deviation from the $Λ$CDM framework. Furthermore, the physical behavior of the models is examined through the deceleration parameter and the total equation of state, confirming a smooth transition from past deceleration expansion to the present accelerated expansion.

Precision Constraints on New Dark Energy Parametrization from DESI BAO DR2

In this article, we investigate a new parametrization of the dark energy equation of state (EoS) with a single parameter for a barotropic fluid that deviates from the standard $Λ$CDM cosmology. We derive observational constraints on the model parameters using recent datasets including Observational Hubble Data (OHD), Pantheon+SH0ES (PPS), and Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument Baryon Acoustic Oscillations Data Release 2 (DESI BAO DR2). We constrain the best fit value of the parameter as, $α=0.239 \pm 0.07$ at 68\% CL from joint analysis, which is non-null and suggests deviations from the cosmological constant. The model accommodates varying values of Hubble constant from different datasets and joint analysis yields $H_0 = 68.40 \pm 0.23$ $\mathrm{Km\,s^ {-1} Mpc^{-1}}$ at 68\% CL. We examine the physical behavior of the model by analyzing the deceleration parameter, the age of the universe, and the Om(z) diagnose. The deceleration parameter confirms a smooth transition from the past deceleration phase to the present cosmic acceleration as well as and also a second future transition back to deceleration, when PPS data is employed.

Cosmological Dynamics on a Novel $f(Q)$ Gravity Model with Recent DESI DR2 Observation

In this article, we investigate the cosmological viability of a modified symmetric teleparallel gravity model within the $f(Q)$ framework. We derive observational constraints on the model parameters by performing a Markov Chain Monte Carlo analysis using a combined dataset consisting of cosmic chronometers, PantheonPlus SH0ES, and DESI BAO DR2. Our analysis yields the best-fit values for the model parameters $m=-0.386 \pm 0.090$ and $n=-1.055 \pm 0.047$, along with the cosmological parameters at present: $H_0 = 73.19 \pm 0.25$, $q_0 = -0.51 \pm 0.6$, and $ω_{0} = -0.73 \pm 0.3$, at 68\% CL. Furthermore, we examine the physical behavior of the model, focusing on the effective equation of state and deceleration parameter. Our findings indicate that the model experiences a transition from the early deceleration phase to the late-time cosmic acceleration, and the transition occurs at a redshift $z_{tr} = 0.573$. We also analyse the $om(z)$ diagnostic, which reflects a positive slope, supporting the behavior of the equation of state parameter in the quintessence region.

Effects of anisotropy in an anisotropic extension of $w$CDM model

In this paper, we derive observational constraints on an anisotropic $w$CDM model from observational data including Baryonic Acoustic Oscillations (BAOs), Cosmic Chronometer (CC), Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN), Pantheon Plus (PP) compilation of Type Ia supernovae, and SH0ES Cepheid host distance anchors. We find that anisotropy is of the order $10^{-13}$, and its presence in the $w$CDM model reduces $H_0$ tension by $\sim 2σ$ and $\sim 1σ$ in the analyses with BAO+CC+BBN+PP and BAO+CC+BBN+PPSH0ES data combinations, respectively. In both analyses, the quintessence form of dark energy is favored at 95\% CL.

Testing spatial curvature in an anisotropic extension of $w$CDM model with low redshift data

In this letter, we report the observational constraints on a Bianchi type I anisotropic extension of $w$CDM model with spatial curvature from observational data including Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO), Cosmic chronometers (CC), Big Bang nucleosynthesis (BBN), Pantheon+ (PP) compilation of SNe Ia and SH0ES Cepheid host distance anchors. The anisotropy is found to be of the order $10^{-13}$, which interplay with spatial curvature to reduce $H_0$ tension by $\sim 1σ$ as found in the analyses with BAO+CC+BBN+PP combination of data, while no significant effect of anisotropy is observed with BAO+CC+BBN+PPSH0ES combination of data. A closed Universe is favored by $w$CDM as well as anisotropic $w$CDM models with spatial curvature in analyses with BAO+CC+BBN+PP combination of data. An observation of an open Universe from $w$CDM model with spatial curvature in analyses with BAO+CC+BBN+PPSH0ES combination of data and a closed Universe from anisotropic $w$CDM model with curvature in analyses with same combination of data is made. The quintessence form of dark energy is favored at 95\% CL in both analyses.

Influence of strain and point defects on the electronic structure and related properties of (111)NiO epitaxial films

(111)NiO epitaxial films are grown on c-sapphire substrates at various growth temperatures ranging from room-temperature to 600C using pulsed laser deposition (PLD) technique. Two series of samples, where different laser fluences are used to ablate the target, are studied here. Films grown with higher laser fluence, are found to be embedded with Ni-clusters crystallographically aligned with the (111)NiO matrix. While the layers grown with lower laser energy density exhibit p-type conductivity specially at low growth temperatures. X-ray diffraction study shows the coexistence of biaxial compressive and tensile hydrostatic strains in these samples, which results in an expansion of the lattice primarily along the growth direction. This effective uniaxial expansion {epsilon}_perpendicular increases with the reduction of the growth temperature. Band gap of these samples is found to decrease linearly with {epsilon}_perpendicular. This result is validated by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Experimental findings and the theoretical study further indicate that V_Ni + O_I and V_O + Ni_I complexes exist as the dominant native defects in samples grown with Ni-deficient (low laser fluence) and Ni-rich (high laser fluence) conditions, respectively. P-type conductivity observed in the samples grown in Ni-deficient condition is more likely to be resulting from V_Ni + O_I defects than Ni-vacancies (V_Ni).

Observational Constraints on generalized dark matter properties in the presence of neutrinos with the final Planck release

In this paper, we investigate an extension of the standard $Λ$CDM model by allowing: a temporal evolution in the equation of state (EoS) of DM via Chevallier-Polarski-Linder parametrization, and the constant non-null sound speed. We also consider the properties of neutrinos, such as the effective neutrino mass and the effective number of neutrino species as free parameters. We derive the constraints on this scenario by using the data from the Planck-2018 cosmic microwave background (CMB), baryonic acoustic oscillation (BAO) measurements, Pantheon+ compilation of Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia), and some large scale structure (LSS) information from the cosmic shear surveys: Kilo Degree Survey (KiDS)-1000 and Dark Energy Survey (DES). We find constraints on the EoS and sound speed of DM very close to the null value in all the analyses, and thus no significant evidence is found beyond the standard CDM paradigm. In all the analyses, we find the significantly tight upper bounds on the sum of neutrino masses, and significantly lower mean values of $S_8$, which are in agreement with the LSS measurements. Thus, the well-known $S_8$ tension is reconciled in the considered model.

A Novel Two Stream Decision Level Fusion of Vision and Inertial Sensors Data for Automatic Multimodal Human Activity Recognition System

This paper presents a novel multimodal human activity recognition system. It uses a two-stream decision level fusion of vision and inertial sensors. In the first stream, raw RGB frames are passed to a part affinity field-based pose estimation network to detect the keypoints of the user. These keypoints are then pre-processed and inputted in a sliding window fashion to a specially designed convolutional neural network for the spatial feature extraction followed by regularized LSTMs to calculate the temporal features. The outputs of LSTM networks are then inputted to fully connected layers for classification. In the second stream, data obtained from inertial sensors are pre-processed and inputted to regularized LSTMs for the feature extraction followed by fully connected layers for the classification. At this stage, the SoftMax scores of two streams are then fused using the decision level fusion which gives the final prediction. Extensive experiments are conducted to evaluate the performance. Four multimodal standard benchmark datasets (UP-Fall detection, UTD-MHAD, Berkeley-MHAD, and C-MHAD) are used for experimentations. The accuracies obtained by the proposed system are 96.9 %, 97.6 %, 98.7 %, and 95.9 % respectively on the UP-Fall Detection, UTDMHAD, Berkeley-MHAD, and C-MHAD datasets. These results are far superior than the current state-of-the-art methods.

An Efficient Deep Convolutional Neural Network Model For Yoga Pose Recognition Using Single Images

Pose recognition deals with designing algorithms to locate human body joints in a 2D/3D space and run inference on the estimated joint locations for predicting the poses. Yoga poses consist of some very complex postures. It imposes various challenges on the computer vision algorithms like occlusion, inter-class similarity, intra-class variability, viewpoint complexity, etc. This paper presents YPose, an efficient deep convolutional neural network (CNN) model to recognize yoga asanas from RGB images. The proposed model consists of four steps as follows: (a) first, the region of interest (ROI) is segmented using segmentation based approaches to extract the ROI from the original images; (b) second, these refined images are passed to a CNN architecture based on the backbone of EfficientNets for feature extraction; (c) third, dense refinement blocks, adapted from the architecture of densely connected networks are added to learn more diversified features; and (d) fourth, global average pooling and fully connected layers are applied for the classification of the multi-level hierarchy of the yoga poses. The proposed model has been tested on the Yoga-82 dataset. It is a publicly available benchmark dataset for yoga pose recognition. Experimental results show that the proposed model achieves the state-of-the-art on this dataset. The proposed model obtained an accuracy of 93.28%, which is an improvement over the earlier state-of-the-art (79.35%) with a margin of approximately 13.9%. The code will be made publicly available.

DroneAttention: Sparse Weighted Temporal Attention for Drone-Camera Based Activity Recognition

Human activity recognition (HAR) using drone-mounted cameras has attracted considerable interest from the computer vision research community in recent years. A robust and efficient HAR system has a pivotal role in fields like video surveillance, crowd behavior analysis, sports analysis, and human-computer interaction. What makes it challenging are the complex poses, understanding different viewpoints, and the environmental scenarios where the action is taking place. To address such complexities, in this paper, we propose a novel Sparse Weighted Temporal Attention (SWTA) module to utilize sparsely sampled video frames for obtaining global weighted temporal attention. The proposed SWTA is comprised of two parts. First, temporal segment network that sparsely samples a given set of frames. Second, weighted temporal attention, which incorporates a fusion of attention maps derived from optical flow, with raw RGB images. This is followed by a basenet network, which comprises a convolutional neural network (CNN) module along with fully connected layers that provide us with activity recognition. The SWTA network can be used as a plug-in module to the existing deep CNN architectures, for optimizing them to learn temporal information by eliminating the need for a separate temporal stream. It has been evaluated on three publicly available benchmark datasets, namely Okutama, MOD20, and Drone-Action. The proposed model has received an accuracy of 72.76%, 92.56%, and 78.86% on the respective datasets thereby surpassing the previous state-of-the-art performances by a margin of 25.26%, 18.56%, and 2.94%, respectively.

SWTF: Sparse Weighted Temporal Fusion for Drone-Based Activity Recognition

Drone-camera based human activity recognition (HAR) has received significant attention from the computer vision research community in the past few years. A robust and efficient HAR system has a pivotal role in fields like video surveillance, crowd behavior analysis, sports analysis, and human-computer interaction. What makes it challenging are the complex poses, understanding different viewpoints, and the environmental scenarios where the action is taking place. To address such complexities, in this paper, we propose a novel Sparse Weighted Temporal Fusion (SWTF) module to utilize sparsely sampled video frames for obtaining global weighted temporal fusion outcome. The proposed SWTF is divided into two components. First, a temporal segment network that sparsely samples a given set of frames. Second, weighted temporal fusion, that incorporates a fusion of feature maps derived from optical flow, with raw RGB images. This is followed by base-network, which comprises a convolutional neural network module along with fully connected layers that provide us with activity recognition. Effect of manganese incorporation on the excitonic recombination dynamics in monolayer MoS$_2$

Using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and Raman spectroscopy techniques we investigate the incorporation of Manganese (Mn) in monolayer (1L)-MoS$_2$ grown on sapphire substrates by microcavity based chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method. These layers are coated with different amount of Mn by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) technique and temperature dependent photo-luminescence (PL) spectroscopic study has helped us in understanding how such deposition affects the dynamics of excitonic recombination in this system. The study further reveals two distinctly different Mn-incorporation regimes. Below a certain critical deposition amount of Mn, thin Mn-coating with large area coverage is found on MoS$_2$ layers and in this regime, substitution of Mo ions by Mn is detected through XPS. Dewetting takes place when Mn-deposition crosses the critical mark, which results in the formation of Mn-droplets on MoS$_2$ layers. In this regime, substitutional incorporation of Mn is suppressed, while the Raman study suggests an enhancement of disorder in the lattice with the Mn-deposition time. From PL investigation, it has been found that the increase of the amount of Mn-deposition not only enhances the density of non-radiative recombination channels for the excitons but also raises the barrier height for such recombination to take place. The study attributes these non-radiative transitions to certain Mo related defects (either Mo-vacancies or distorted Mo-S bonds), which are believed to be generated in large numbers during Mn-droplet formation stage as a result of the withdrawal of Mn ions from the Mo-substitutional sites.

Very thin (111) NiO epitaxial films grown on c-sapphire substrates by pulsed laser deposition technique

(111)NiO epitaxial layers are grown on c-sapphire substrates by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) technique. Structural and morphological properties of the films are studied using in-plane as well as out-of-plane high resolution X-ray diffraction and atomic force microscopy techniques as functions of growth temperature, oxygen pressure and the pulses count of the laser. The study shows that continuous epitaxial films of thickness as low as 3 nm with high crystalline quality, smooth surface and interface morphology can be grown by this technique. The study also reveals the co-existence of 60°-rotated (111) triangular domains of NiO in the film. The study also evidences the presence of a very low density of 60-degree dislocations in these films. Density of screw and edge dislocations are also estimated to be quite low. It has been found that growth-temperature, oxygen partial pressure and the film thickness can influence differently the density of various dislocation types. These parameters are also found to affect significantly the strain developed in the films.

Constraints on Dark Matter-Photon Coupling in the Presence of Time-Varying Dark Energy

In a recent work [Phys. Rev. D 98, 043521 (2018)], we have investigated a dark matter (DM)-photon coupling model in which the DM decays into photons in the presence of dark energy (DE) with the constant equation of state (EoS) parameter. Here, we study an extension of the DM-photon coupling model by considering a time-varying EoS of DE via Chevalier-Polarski-Linder (CPL) parametrization. We derive observational constraints on the model parameters by using the data from cosmic microwave background (CMB), baryonic acoustic oscillations (BAO), the local value of Hubble constant from Hubble Space Telescope (HST), and large scale structure (LSS) information from the abundance of galaxy clusters, in four different combinations. We find that in the present DM-photon coupling scenario the mean values of $w_{\rm de0}$ are in quintessence region ($w_{\rm de0} > -1$) whereas they were in the phantom region ($w_{\rm de0} < -1$) in our previous study with all data combinations. The constraints on the DM-photon coupling parameter do not reflect any significant deviation from the previous results. Due to the decay of DM into photons, we obtain higher values of $H_0$, consistent with the local measurements, similar to our previous study. But, the time-varying DE leads to lower values of $σ_8$ in the DM-photon coupling model with all data combinations, in comparison to the results in our previous study. Thus, allowing time-varying DE in the DM-photon coupling scenario is useful to alleviate the $H_0$ and $σ_8$ tensions.

Testing the warmness of dark matter

Dark matter (DM) as a pressureless perfect fluid provides a good fit of the standard $Λ$CDM model to the astrophysical and cosmological data. In this paper, we investigate two extended properties of DM: a possible time dependence of the equation of state of DM via Chevallier-Polarski-Linder parametrization, $w_{\rm dm} = w_{\rm dm 0} + w_{\rm dm 1}(1-a)$, and the constant non-null sound speed $\hat{c}^2_{\rm s,dm}$. We analyze these DM properties on top of the base $Λ$CDM model by using the data from Planck cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature and polarization anisotropy, baryonic acoustic oscillations (BAO) and the local value of the Hubble constant from the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). We find new and robust constraints on the extended free parameters of DM. The most tight constraints are imposed by CMB + BAO data where the three parameters $w_{\rm dm0}$, $w_{\rm dm1}$ and $\hat{c}^2_{\rm s,dm}$ are respectively constrained to be less than $1.43\times 10^{-3}$, $1.44\times 10^{-3}$ and $1.79\times 10^{-6}$ at 95\% CL. All the extended parameters of DM show consistency with zero at 95\% CL, indicating no evidence beyond the CDM paradigm. We notice that the extended properties of DM significantly affect several parameters of the base $Λ$CDM model. In particular, in all the analyses performed here, we find significantly larger mean values of $H_0$ and lower mean values of $σ_8$ in comparison to the base $Λ$CDM model. Thus, the well-known $H_0$ and $σ_8$ tensions might be reconciled in the presence of extended DM parameters within the $Λ$CDM framework. Also, we estimate the warmness of DM particles as well as its mass scale and find a lower bound: $\sim$ 500 eV from our analyses.
