Discrete quantum dot like emitters in monolayer MoSe2: Spatial mapping, Magneto-optics and Charge tuning

Transition metal dichalcogenide monolayers such as MoSe2,MoS2 and WSe2 are direct bandgap semiconductors with original optoelectronic and spin-valley properties. Here we report spectrally sharp, spatially localized emission in monolayer MoSe2. We find this quantum dot like emission in samples exfoliated onto gold substrates and also suspended flakes. Spatial mapping shows a correlation between the location of emitters and the existence of wrinkles (strained regions) in the flake. We tune the emission properties in magnetic and electric fields applied perpendicular to the monolayer plane. We extract an exciton g-factor of the discrete emitters close to -4, as for 2D excitons in this material. In a charge tunable sample we record discrete jumps on the meV scale as charges are added to the emitter when changing the applied voltage. The control of the emission properties of these quantum dot like emitters paves the way for further engineering of the light matter interaction in these atomically thin materials.

On the Exact Distribution of Mutual Information of Two-user MIMO MAC Based on Quotient Distribution of Wishart Matrices

We propose the exact calculation of the probability density function (PDF) and cumulative distribution function (CDF) of mutual information (MI) for a two-user MIMO MAC network over block Rayleigh fading channels. So far the PDF and CDF have been numerically evaluated since MI depends on the quotient of two Wishart matrices, and no closed-form for this quotient was available. We derive exact results for the PDF and CDF of extreme (the smallest/the largest) eigenvalues. Based on the results of quotient ensemble the exact calculation for PDF and CDF of mutual information is presented via Laplace transform approach and by direct integration of joint PDF of quotient ensemble's eigenvalues. Furthermore, our derivations also provide the parameters to apply the Gaussian approximation method, which is comparatively easier to implement. We show that approximation matches the exact results remarkably well for outage probability, i.e. CDF, above 10%. However, the approximation could also be used for 1% outage probability with a relatively small error. We apply the derived expressions to analyze the effects of adding receiving antennas on the receiver's performance. By supposing no channel knowledge at transmitters and successive decoding at receiver, the capacity of the first user increases and outage probability decreases with extra antennas, as expected.

Exact evaluations of some Meijer G-functions and probability of all eigenvalues real for product of two Gaussian matrices

We provide a proof to a recent conjecture by Forrester [2014 J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. 47, 065202] regarding the algebraic and arithmetic structure of Meijer G-functions which appear in the expression for probability of all eigenvalues real for product of two real Gaussian matrices. In the process we come across several interesting identities involving Meijer G-functions.

Collective state synthesis in an optical cavity using Rydberg atom blockade

We investigate the coherent manipulation of interacting Rydberg atoms placed inside a high-finesse optical cavity for the deterministic preparation of strongly coupled light-matter systems. We consider a four-level diamond scheme with one common Rydberg level for N interacting atoms. One side of the diamond is used to excite the atoms into a collective `superatom' Rydberg state using either π-pulses or stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP) pulses. The upper transition on the other side of the diamond is used to transfer the collective state to one that is coupled to a field mode of an optical cavity. Due to the strong interaction between the atoms in the Rydberg level, the Rydberg blockade mechanism plays a key role in the deterministic quantum state synthesis of the atoms in the cavity. We use numerical simulation to show that non-classical states of light can be generated and that the state that is coupled to the cavity field is a collective one. We also investigate how different decay mechanisms affect this interacting many-body system. We also analyze our system in the case of two Rydberg excitations within the blockade volume. The simulations are carried out with parameters corresponding to realizable high-finesse optical cavities and alkali atoms like rubidium.

Random matrix ensembles involving Gaussian Wigner and Wishart matrices, and biorthogonal structure

We consider four nontrivial ensembles involving Gaussian Wigner and Wishart matrices. These are relevant to problems ranging from multiantenna communication to random supergravity. We derive the matrix probability density, as well as the eigenvalue densities for these ensembles. In all cases the joint eigenvalue density exhibits a biorthogonal structure. A determinantal representation, based on a generalization of Andréief's integration formula, is used to compactly express the $r$-point correlation function of eigenvalues. This representation circumvents the complications encountered in the usual approaches, and the answer is obtained immediately by examining the joint density of eigenvalues. We validate our analytical results using Monte Carlo simulations.

Strain-induced spatial and spectral isolation of quantum emitters in mono- and bi-layer WSe2

Two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenide semiconductors are intriguing hosts for quantum light sources due to their unique opto-electronic properties. Here we report that strain gradients induced by substrate patterning result in spatially and spectrally isolated quantum emitters in mono- and bi-layer WSe2. By correlating localized excitons with localized strain-variations, we show that the quantum emitter emission energy can be red-tuned up to a remarkable ~170 meV. We probe the fine-structure, magneto-optics, and second order coherence of a strained emitter. These results raise the prospect to strain-engineer quantum emitter properties and deterministically create arrays of quantum emitters in two-dimensional semiconductors.

Gap probabilities and densities of extreme eigenvalues of random matrices: Exact results

We derive exact results for gap probabilities, as well as densities of extreme eigenvalues for six complex random matrix ensembles of fundamental importance. These are Gauss-Wigner, Laguerre-Wishart, Cauchy-Lorentz (two variants), Jacobi-MANOVA and Bures-Hall (trace unrestricted). We deal with both correlated and uncorrelated cases. Extensive Monte-Carlo simulations based on explicit matrix models or Dyson's log-gas formalism have also been performed, which corroborate all analytical results.

A controllable single photon beam-splitter as a node of a quantum network

A model for a controlled single-photon beam-splitter is proposed and analysed. It consists of two crossed optical-cavities with overlapping waists, dynamically coupled to a single flying atom. The system is shown to route a single photon with near-unity efficiency in an effective "weak-coupling" regime. Furthermore, two such nodes, forming a segment of a quantum network, are shown to perform several controlled quantum operations. All one-qubit operations involve a transfer of a photon from one cavity to another in a single node, while two-qubit operations involve transfer from one node to a next one, coupled via an optical fiber. Novel timing protocols for classical optical fields are found to simplify possible experimental realizations along with achievable effective parameter regime. Though our analysis here is restricted to a cavity-QED scenario, basic features of the model can be extended to various other physical systems including gated quantum dots, circuit-QED or opto-mechanical elements.

The Correlated Jacobi and the Correlated Cauchy-Lorentz ensembles

We calculate the $k$-point generating function of the correlated Jacobi ensemble using supersymmetric methods. We use the result for complex matrices for $k=1$ to derive a closed-form expression for eigenvalue density. For real matrices we obtain the density in terms of a twofold integral that we evaluate numerically. For both expressions we find agreement when comparing with Monte Carlo simulations. Relations between these quantities for the Jacobi and the Cauchy-Lorentz ensemble are derived.

Unveiling of Bragg glass to vortex glass transition by an ac driving force in a single crystal of Yb3Rh4Sn13

We present here some striking discrepancies in the results of ac and dc magnetization measurements performed in a single crystal of low Tc superconductor, Yb3Rh4Sn13. Fingerprint of a transition from an ordered vortex lattice a la Bragg glass (BG) phase to a partially-disordered vortex glass (VG) like phase gets unearthed under the influence of an ac driving force present inevitably in the isothermal ac susceptibility measurements. In contrast to its well-known effect of improving the state of spatial order in the vortex matter, the ac drive is surprisingly found to promote disorder by assisting the BG to VG transition to occur at a lower field value in this compound. On the other hand, the isothermal dc magnetization (M-H) scans, devoid of such a driving force, do not reveal this transition; they instead yield signature of another order-disorder transition at elevated fields, viz., peak effect (PE), located substantially above the BG to VG transition observed in the isothermal ac susceptibility measurements. Further, the evolution of PE feature with increasing field as observed in isofield ac susceptibility plots indicates emergence of an ordered vortex configuration (BG) from a disordered phase above a certain field, H* (~ 4 kOe). Below H*, the vortex matter created via field-cooling (FC) is found to be better spatially ordered than that prepared in zero field-cooled (ZFC) mode. This is contrary to the usual behavior anticipated near the high-field order-disorder transition (PE) wherein a FC state is supposed to be a supercooled disordered phase and the ZFC state is comparatively better ordered.

Paramagnetic magnetization signals and curious metastable behaviour in field-cooled magnetization of a single crystal of superconductor 2H-NbSe2

We present here some newer characteristics pertaining to paramagnetic Meissner effect like response in a single crystal of the low Tc superconducting compound 2H-NbSe2 via a detailed study of effects of perturbation on the field-cooled magnetization response. In the temperature range, where an anomalous paramagnetic magnetization occurs, the field-cooled magnetization response is found to be highly metastable: it displays a curious tendency to switch randomly from a given paramagnetic value to a diamagnetic or to a different paramagnetic value, when the system is perturbed by an impulse of an externally applied ac field. The new facets revealed in a single crystal of 2H-NbSe2 surprisingly bear a marked resemblance with the characteristics of magnetization behaviour anticipated for the giant vortex states with multiple flux quanta predicted to occur in mesoscopic-sized superconducting specimen and possible transitions amongst such states.

Eigenvalue statistics for the sum of two complex Wishart matrices

The sum of independent Wishart matrices, taken from distributions with unequal covariance matrices, plays a crucial role in multivariate statistics, and has applications in the fields of quantitative finance and telecommunication. However, analytical results concerning the corresponding eigenvalue statistics have remained unavailable, even for the sum of two Wishart matrices. This can be attributed to the complicated and rotationally noninvariant nature of the matrix distribution that makes extracting the information about eigenvalues a nontrivial task. Using a generalization of the Harish-Chandra-Itzykson-Zuber integral, we find exact solution to this problem for the complex Wishart case when one of the covariance matrices is proportional to the identity matrix, while the other is arbitrary. We derive exact and compact expressions for the joint probability density and marginal density of eigenvalues. The analytical results are compared with numerical simulations and we find perfect agreement.

Evidence of surface superconductivity and multi-quanta vortex states in a weakly-pinned single crystal of Ca3Ir4Sn13

We report here the observation of anomalous paramagnetic signal(s) in the isofield field-cooled cool-down magnetization scans (MFCC(T)) recorded for a single crystal of a low Tc superconductor Ca3Ir4Sn13. Novel features emanating from the MFCC(T) response include an oscillatory magnetization behaviour below Tc and a rich multiplicity (non-uniqueness) in magnetization ranging from diamagnetism to paramagnetism at a given H, T value. The metastability in MFCC(T) has been ascribed to non-unique coexistence of multi-quanta vortex states and single quantum (Abrikosov) vortices. Additionally, the isothermal M(H) scans recorded across a short window of temperature just below Tc show evidence for only the multi-quanta vortex states in the domain of surface superconductivity, with no fingerprint(s) of pinned Abrikosov lattice.

Dual role of an ac driving force and the underlying two distinct order-disorder transitions in the vortex phase diagram of Ca3Ir4Sn13

We present distinct demarcation of the Bragg glass (BG) to multi-domain vortex glass (VG) transition line and the eventual amorphization of the VG phase in a weakly pinned single crystal of the superconducting compound Ca3Ir4Sn13 on the basis of comprehension of the different yields about the second magnetization peak (SMP) anomaly in the dc magnetization and the corresponding anomalous feature in the ac susceptibility measurements. The shaking by a small ac magnetic field, inevitably present in the ac susceptibility measurements, is seen to result in contrasting responses in two different portions of the field-temperature (H, T) phase space of the multi-domain VG. In one of the portions, embracing the BG to VG transition across the onset of the SMP anomaly, the ac drive is surprisingly seen to assist the transformation of the well ordered BG phase to a lesser ordered VG phase. The BG phase exists as a superheated state over a small portion of the VG space and this attests to the first order nature of the BG to VG transition.

Effect of nominal substitution of transition metals for excess Fe in Fe_{1+x}Se superconductor

Taking cue from the increase in the superconducting transition temperature (Tc) of Fe1+xSe via nominal (2 wt%) substitution of Cr instead of excess Fe, we have now extended our study with nominal substitution (<=5 wt%) with other transition metals (Ni, Co, Fe, Mn, Cr, V and Ti) in place of excess iron. The Tc is found to increase (maximum ~11 K) or get suppressed depending on the substituted transition metal. Our studies indicate that the superconducting transition temperature depends on various parameters like the ionic size of the transition metal, its magnetic moment as well as the amount of hexagonal phase present as impurity.

Distributions of Off-Diagonal Scattering Matrix Elements: Exact Results

Scattering is a ubiquitous phenomenon which is observed in a variety of physical systems which span a wide range of length scales. The scattering matrix is the key quantity which provides a complete description of the scattering process. The universal features of scattering in chaotic systems is most generally modeled by the Heidelberg approach which introduces stochasticity to the scattering matrix at the level of the Hamiltonian describing the scattering center. The statistics of the scattering matrix is obtained by averaging over the ensemble of random Hamiltonians of appropriate symmetry. We derive exact results for the distributions of the real and imaginary parts of the off-diagonal scattering matrix elements applicable to orthogonally-invariant and unitarily-invariant Hamiltonians, thereby solving a long standing problem.

Ensuring Predictable Contact Opportunity for Scalable Vehicular Internet Access On the Go

With increasing popularity of media enabled hand-helds and their integration with the in-vehicle entertainment systems, the need for high data-rate services for mobile users on the go is evident. This ever-increasing demand of data is constantly surpassing what cellular networks can economically support. Large-scale Wireless LANs (WLANs) can provide such a service, but they are expensive to deploy and maintain. Open WLAN access-points, on the other hand, need no new deployments, but can offer only opportunistic services, lacking any performance guarantees. In contrast, a carefully planned sparse deployment of roadside WiFi provides an economically scalable infrastructure with quality of service assurance to mobile users. In this paper, we present a new metric, called Contact Opportunity, to closely model the quality of data service that a mobile user might experience when driving through the system. We then present efficient deployment algorithms for minimizing the cost for ensuring a required level of contact opportunity. We further extend this concept and the deployment techniques to a more intuitive metric -- the average throughput -- by taking various dynamic elements into account. Simulations over a real road network and experimental results show that our approach achieves significantly better cost vs. throughput tradeoff in both the worst case and average case compared with some commonly used deployment algorithms.

Application of Remote Sensing, GIS and GPS for efficient Urban Management Plan, A case study of part of Hyderabad city

Role of urban planning and management in Hyderabad is becoming more and more crucial due to the dramatic increase in urban population and allied urban problems. Hyderabad is experiencing a rapid urbanization rate. Urbanization contributes many advantages in terms of economics, but if uncontrolled, would produce negative consequences to the physical, social and natural environment. With the advancement of GIS, which considerably influenced the dynamic nature of urban and regional planning, incorporation of GIS becomes imperative for better and improved decision-making in urban planning and management. It offers a solution to the urban problems and decision-making, which is more reliant to the real-time spatial modelling. The integration of Geographical Information System (GIS) and Remote Sensing has provided a tool, which can contribute to much clearer understanding of real planning problems as well as prescriptive planning scenarios to enhance the quality of urban planning and management.
