Observation of a $Pbca$ phase and robust metallicity in $\rm{RuO_2}$ under pressure

$\rm{RuO_2}$ stands as a quintessential rutile-type compound under ambient conditions, with its structural exploration under pressure bearing significant implications for both phase transition investigations and Earth science. Nonetheless, the precise phase transition sequence remains a debate. In this study, we disclose the emergence of the $Pbca$ phase alongside the enduring metallic character of $\rm{RuO_2}$ under megabar pressure. Employing state-of-the-art synchrotron X-ray diffraction, our observations delineate a phase transition trajectory progressing through rutile, $\rm{CaCl_2}$, and ultimately $Pbca$ phases. Notably, the $Pbca$ phase manifests immediately just after the rutile-$\rm{CaCl_2}$ transition, confining a narrow pressure regime for the pure $\rm{CaCl_2}$-type phase. Within the pressure range of 15.5 to 35.0 GPa, a coexistence of the $\rm{CaCl_2}$-type and $Pbca$ phases is observed, transforming to a sole presence of the $Pbca$ phase beyond 35.0 GPa. Electrical transport measurements conducted on both single crystal and powder samples confirm the enduring metallic conductivity of $\rm{RuO_2}$, persisting up to at least $\sim$120 GPa, albeit exhibiting a diminished conductivity at ultrahigh pressures due to a reduction in electronic density of states at the Fermi level. This study furnishes compelling evidence for the presence of the $Pbca$ phase across a broad pressure range, diverging from the previously widely acknowledged $Pa\bar{3}$ phase, thereby offering crucial insights into phase transition phenomena in other metal dioxides and advancing our comprehension of electronic behaviors within 4d and 5d electron systems.

Coexistence of superconductivity and sliding polar metal state in HgPSe3

The simultaneous presence of polarity and metallicity in a material signifies an exotic polar metal state, but such materials are extremely rare, especially in bulk form, due to mutually exclusive nature of the fundamental defining properties. Here, we report experimental findings that HgPSe3 is a robust bulk polar metal at room temperature with a chiral structure stabilized by pressure and, remarkably, this polar metal hosts superconductivity with critical temperature Tc up to 11 K. Theoretical analysis reveals a two-step interlayer sliding-then-compressing mechanism for coexistence of polarity and metallicity in HgPSe3. This work unveils a new paradigm for creating the bulk polar metal state and simultaneous presence of coexisting quantum orders, raising the prospect of discovering novel emergent physics using pressure as a tuning knob.

Pressure-induced structural phase transition and new superconducting phase in UTe2

We report on the crystal structure and electronic properties of the heavy fermion superconductor UTe2 at high pressure up to 11 GPa, as investigated by X-ray diffraction and electrical resistivity experiments. The X-ray diffraction measurements under high pressure using a synchrotron light source reveal anisotropic linear compressibility of the unit cell up to 3.5 GPa, while a pressure-induced structural phase transition is observed above 3.5-4GPa at room temperature, where the body-centered orthorhombic crystal structure with the space group Immm changes into a body-centered tetragonal structure with the space group I4/mmm. The molar volume drops abruptly at the critical pressure, while the distance between the first-nearest neighbor of U atoms increases, implying a switch from the heavy electronic states to the weakly correlated electronic states. Surprisingly, a new superconducting phase at pressures higher than 7 GPa was detected at Tsc above 2K with a relatively low upper-critical field, Hc2(0). The resistivity above 3.5GPa, thus, in the high-pressure tetragonal phase, shows a large drop below 230 K, which may also be related to a considerable change from the heavy electronic states to the weakly correlated electronic states.

Hydrogen-Storing Salt NaCl(H$_2$) Synthesized at High Pressure and High Temperature

X-ray diffraction and Raman scattering measurements, and first-principles calculations are performed to search for the formation of NaCl-hydrogen compound. When NaCl and H$_{2}$ mixture is laser-heated to above 1500 K at pressures exceeding 40 GPa, we observed the formation of NaClH$_{\textit{x}}$ with $\textit{P}$6$_{3}$/$\textit{mmc}$ structure which accommodates H$_{2}$ molecules in the interstitial sites of NaCl lattice forming ABAC stacking. Upon the decrease of pressure at 300 K, NaClH$_\textit{x}$ remains stable down to 17 GPa. Our calculations suggest the observed NaClH$_{\textit{x}}$ is NaCl(H$_{2}$). Besides, a hydrogen-richer phase NaCl(H$_{2}$)$_{4}$ is predicted to become stable at pressures above 40 GPa.

Superconductivity of Pure H3S Synthesis from Elemental Sulfur and Hydrogen

Superconductive H3S synthesized from H2S is very poorly crystallized, and has excess sulfur as impurity (3H2S -> 2H3S + S). The phase transition process undergoes in sulfur excess condition, which might cause hydrogen deficiency. The influence of hydrogen deficiency is not clear. Therefore investigation on the superconductivity in H3S with no hydrogen deficiency is demanded. Two groups performed synthesis of H3S from elemental sulfur and hydrogen (direct synthesis) and their results have shown that no hydrogen deficiency is caused when the direct synthesis is performed under hydrogen excessive condition. However, no measurements of superconductivity has been carried out because of the major technical difficulties in hydrogen experiments in diamond anvil cells (DACs). Here, we report the first electrical resistance measurements in superconductive H3S synthesized from elemental sulfur and hydrogen (3H2 + 2S -> 2H3S). Our powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) using a synchrotron X-ray revealed that synthesized H3S has much improved crystalline quality and no sulfur as reported in previous works. We observed a superconducting transition with a sharp drop of the resistance at Tonset = 200 K and we obtained the highest Toffset of 186 K in S-H system.
