Performance Comparison of Optimal Fractional Order Hybrid Fuzzy PID Controllers for Handling Oscillatory Fractional Order Processes with Dead Time

Fuzzy logic based PID controllers have been studied in this paper, considering several combinations of hybrid controllers by grouping the proportional, integral and derivative actions with fuzzy inferencing in different forms. Fractional order (FO) rate of error signal and FO integral of control signal have been used in the design of a family of decomposed hybrid FO fuzzy PID controllers. The input and output scaling factors (SF) along with the integro-differential operators are tuned with real coded genetic algorithm (GA) to produce optimum closed loop performance by simultaneous consideration of the control loop error index and the control signal. Three different classes of fractional order oscillatory processes with various levels of relative dominance between time constant and time delay have been used to test the comparative merits of the proposed family of hybrid fractional order fuzzy PID controllers. Performance comparison of the different FO fuzzy PID controller structures has been done in terms of optimal set-point tracking, load disturbance rejection and minimal variation of manipulated variable or smaller actuator requirement etc. In addition, multi-objective Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm (NSGA-II) has been used to study the Pareto optimal trade-offs between the set point tracking and control signal, and the set point tracking and load disturbance performance for each of the controller structure to handle the three different types of processes.

Continuous Order Identification of PHWR Models Under Step-back for the Design of Hyper-damped Power Tracking Controller with Enhanced Reactor Safety

In this paper, discrete time higher integer order linear transfer function models have been identified first for a 500 MWe Pressurized Heavy Water Reactor (PHWR) which has highly nonlinear dynamical nature. Linear discrete time models of the nonlinear nuclear reactor have been identified around eight different operating points (power reduction or step-back conditions) with least square estimator (LSE) and its four variants. From the synthetic frequency domain data of these identified discrete time models, fractional order (FO) models with sampled continuous order distribution are identified for the nuclear reactor. This enables design of continuous order Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) like compensators in the complex w-plane for global power tracking at a wide range of operating conditions. Modeling of the PHWR is attempted with various levels of discrete commensurate-orders and the achievable accuracies are also elucidated along with the hidden issues, regarding modeling and controller design. Credible simulation studies are presented to show the effectiveness of the proposed reactor modeling and power level controller design. The controller pushes the reactor poles in higher Riemann sheets and thus makes the closed loop system hyper-damped which ensures safer reactor operation at varying dc-gain while making the power tracking temporal response slightly sluggish; but ensuring greater safety margin.

Optimum Weight Selection Based LQR Formulation for the Design of Fractional Order PIλDμ Controllers to Handle a Class of Fractional Order Systems

A weighted summation of Integral of Time Multiplied Absolute Error (ITAE) and Integral of Squared Controller Output (ISCO) minimization based time domain optimal tuning of fractional-order (FO) PID or PIλDμ controller is proposed in this paper with a Linear Quadratic Regulator (LQR) based technique that minimizes the change in trajectories of the state variables and the control signal. A class of fractional order systems having single non-integer order element which show highly sluggish and oscillatory open loop responses have been tuned with an LQR based FOPID controller. The proposed controller design methodology is compared with the existing time domain optimal tuning techniques with respect to change in the trajectory of state variables, tracking performance for change in set-point, magnitude of control signal and also the capability of load disturbance suppression. A real coded genetic algorithm (GA) has been used for the optimal choice of weighting matrices while designing the quadratic regulator by minimizing the time domain integral performance index. Credible simulation studies have been presented to justify the proposition.

LQR based improved discrete PID controller design via optimum selection of weighting matrices using fractional order integral performance index

The continuous and discrete time Linear Quadratic Regulator (LQR) theory has been used in this paper for the design of optimal analog and discrete PID controllers respectively. The PID controller gains are formulated as the optimal state-feedback gains, corresponding to the standard quadratic cost function involving the state variables and the controller effort. A real coded Genetic Algorithm (GA) has been used next to optimally find out the weighting matrices, associated with the respective optimal state-feedback regulator design while minimizing another time domain integral performance index, comprising of a weighted sum of Integral of Time multiplied Squared Error (ITSE) and the controller effort. The proposed methodology is extended for a new kind of fractional order (FO) integral performance indices. The impact of fractional order (as any arbitrary real order) cost function on the LQR tuned PID control loops is highlighted in the present work, along with the achievable cost of control. Guidelines for the choice of integral order of the performance index are given depending on the characteristics of the process, to be controlled.

Chaotic multi-objective optimization based design of fractional order PIλDμ controller in AVR system

In this paper, a fractional order (FO) PIλDμcontroller is designed to take care of various contradictory objective functions for an Automatic Voltage Regulator (AVR) system. An improved evolutionary Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm II (NSGA II), which is augmented with a chaotic map for greater effectiveness, is used for the multi-objective optimization problem. The Pareto fronts showing the trade-off between different design criteria are obtained for the PIλDμand PID controller. A comparative analysis is done with respect to the standard PID controller to demonstrate the merits and demerits of the fractional order PIλDμcontroller.

Multi-objective optimization framework for networked predictive controller design

Networked Control Systems (NCSs) often suffer from random packet dropouts which deteriorate overall system's stability and performance. To handle the ill effects of random packet losses in feedback control systems, closed over communication network, a state feedback controller with predictive gains has been designed. To achieve improved performance, an optimization based controller design framework has been proposed in this paper with Linear Matrix Inequality (LMI) constraints, to ensure guaranteed stability. Different conflicting objective functions have been optimized with Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm-II (NSGA-II). The methodology proposed in this paper not only gives guaranteed closed loop stability in the sense of Lyapunov, even in the presence of random packet losses, but also gives an optimization trade-off between two conflicting time domain control objectives.

Stabilization Based Networked Predictive Controller Design for Switched Plants

Stabilizing state feedback controller has been designed in this paper for a switched DC motor plant, controlled over communication network. The switched system formulation for the networked control system (NCS) with additional switching in a plant parameter along with the switching due to random packet losses, have been formulated as few set of non-strict Linear Matrix Inequalities (LMIs). In order to solve non-strict LMIs using standard LMI solver and to design the stabilizing state feedback controller, the Cone Complementary Linearization (CCL) technique has been adopted. Simulation studies have been carried out for a DC motor plant, operating at two different sampling times with random switching in the moment of inertia, representing sudden jerks.

Comparative Studies on Decentralized Multiloop PID Controller Design Using Evolutionary Algorithms

Decentralized PID controllers have been designed in this paper for simultaneous tracking of individual process variables in multivariable systems under step reference input. The controller design framework takes into account the minimization of a weighted sum of Integral of Time multiplied Squared Error (ITSE) and Integral of Squared Controller Output (ISCO) so as to balance the overall tracking errors for the process variables and required variation in the corresponding manipulated variables. Decentralized PID gains are tuned using three popular Evolutionary Algorithms (EAs) viz. Genetic Algorithm (GA), Evolutionary Strategy (ES) and Cultural Algorithm (CA). Credible simulation comparisons have been reported for four benchmark 2x2 multivariable processes.

A feed-forward multi-layer Artificial Neural Network (ANN) based approach is used for this purpose and tested for two target applications i.e. nuclear reactor power level monitoring and an AC servo position control system. Various configurations of ANN using different activation functions, number of hidden layers and neurons in each layer are trained and tested to find out the best configuration. The training is carried out multiple times to check for consistency and the mean and standard deviation of the root mean square errors (RMSE) are reported for each configuration.

Optimum PID Control of Multi-wing Attractors in A Family of Lorenz-like Chaotic Systems

Multi-wing chaotic attractors are highly complex nonlinear dynamical systems with higher number of index-2 equilibrium points. Due to the presence of several equilibrium points, randomness of the state time series for these multi-wing chaotic systems is higher than that of the conventional double wing chaotic attractors. A real coded Genetic Algorithm (GA) based global optimization framework has been presented in this paper, to design optimum PID controllers so as to control the state trajectories of three different multi-wing Lorenz like chaotic systems viz. Lu, Rucklidge and Sprott-1 system.

Artificial Neural Network Based Prediction of Optimal Pseudo-Damping and Meta-Damping in Oscillatory Fractional Order Dynamical Systems

This paper investigates typical behaviors like damped oscillations in fractional order (FO) dynamical systems. Such response occurs due to the presence of, what is conceived as, pseudo-damping and meta-damping in some special class of FO systems. Here, approximation of such damped oscillation in FO systems with the conventional notion of integer order damping and time constant has been carried out using Genetic Algorithm (GA). Next, a multilayer feed-forward Artificial Neural Network (ANN) has been trained using the GA based results to predict the optimal pseudo and meta-damping from knowledge of the maximum order or number of terms in the FO dynamical system.

A Conformal Mapping Based Fractional Order Approach for Sub-optimal Tuning of PID Controllers with Guaranteed Dominant Pole Placement

A novel conformal mapping based Fractional Order (FO) methodology is developed in this paper for tuning existing classical (Integer Order) Proportional Integral Derivative (PID) controllers especially for sluggish and oscillatory second order systems. The conventional pole placement tuning via Linear Quadratic Regulator (LQR) method is extended for open loop oscillatory systems as well. The locations of the open loop zeros of a fractional order PID (FOPID or PIλDμ) controller have been approximated in this paper vis-à-vis a LQR tuned conventional integer order PID controller, to achieve equivalent integer order PID control system. This approach eases the implementation of analog/digital realization of a FOPID controller with its integer order counterpart along with the advantages of fractional order controller preserved. It is shown here in the paper that decrease in the integro-differential operators of the FOPID/PIλDμ controller pushes the open loop zeros of the equivalent PID controller towards greater damping regions which gives a trajectory of the controller zeros and dominant closed loop poles. This trajectory is termed as "M-curve". This phenomena is used to design a two-stage tuning algorithm which reduces the existing PID controller's effort in a significant manner compared to that with a single stage LQR based pole placement method at a desired closed loop damping and frequency.

A Novel Fractional Order Fuzzy PID Controller and Its Optimal Time Domain Tuning Based on Integral Performance Indices

A novel fractional order (FO) fuzzy Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) controller has been proposed in this paper which works on the closed loop error and its fractional derivative as the input and has a fractional integrator in its output. The fractional order differ-integrations in the proposed fuzzy logic controller (FLC) are kept as design variables along with the input-output scaling factors (SF) and are optimized with Genetic Algorithm (GA) while minimizing several integral error indices along with the control signal as the objective function. Simulations studies are carried out to control a delayed nonlinear process and an open loop unstable process with time delay. The closed loop performances and controller efforts in each case are compared with conventional PID, fuzzy PID and PIλDμ controller subjected to different integral performance indices. Simulation results show that the proposed fractional order fuzzy PID controller outperforms the others in most cases.

On the Selection of Tuning Methodology of FOPID Controllers for the Control of Higher Order Processes

In this paper, a comparative study is done on the time and frequency domain tuning strategies for fractional order (FO) PID controllers to handle higher order processes. A new fractional order template for reduced parameter modeling of stable minimum/non-minimum phase higher order processes is introduced and its advantage in frequency domain tuning of FOPID controllers is also presented. The time domain optimal tuning of FOPID controllers have also been carried out to handle these higher order processes by performing optimization with various integral performance indices. The paper highlights on the practical control system implementation issues like flexibility of online autotuning, reduced control signal and actuator size, capability of measurement noise filtration, load disturbance suppression, robustness against parameter uncertainties etc. in light of the above tuning methodologies.

Handling Packet Dropouts and Random Delays for Unstable Delayed Processes in NCS by Optimal Tuning of PIλDμ Controllers with Evolutionary Algorithms

The issues of stochastically varying network delays and packet dropouts in Networked Control System (NCS) applications have been simultaneously addressed by time domain optimal tuning of fractional order (FO) PID controllers. Different variants of evolutionary algorithms are used for the tuning process and their performances are compared. Also the effectiveness of the fractional order PIλDμ controllers over their integer order counterparts is looked into. Two standard test bench plants with time delay and unstable poles which are encountered in process control applications are tuned with the proposed method to establish the validity of the tuning methodology. The proposed tuning methodology is independent of the specific choice of plant and is also applicable for less complicated systems. Thus it is useful in a wide variety of scenarios. The paper also shows the superiority of FOPID controllers over their conventional PID counterparts for NCS applications.

Improved Model Reduction and Tuning of Fractional Order PIλDμ Controllers for Analytical Rule Extraction with Genetic Programming

Genetic Algorithm (GA) has been used in this paper for a new approach of sub-optimal model reduction in the Nyquist plane and optimal time domain tuning of PID and fractional order (FO) PIλDμ controllers. Simulation studies show that the Nyquist based new model reduction technique outperforms the conventional H2 norm based reduced parameter modeling technique. With the tuned controller parameters and reduced order model parameter data-set, optimum tuning rules have been developed with a test-bench of higher order processes via Genetic Programming (GP). The GP performs a symbolic regression on the reduced process parameters to evolve a tuning rule which provides the best analytical expression to map the data. The tuning rules are developed for a minimum time domain integral performance index described by weighted sum of error index and controller effort. From the reported Pareto optimal front of GP based optimal rule extraction technique a trade-off can be made between the complexity of the tuning formulae and the control performance. The efficacy of the single-gene and multi-gene GP based tuning rules has been compared with original GA based control performance for the PID and PIλDμ controllers, handling four different class of representative higher order processes. These rules are very useful for process control engineers as they inherit the power of the GA based tuning methodology, but can be easily calculated without the requirement for running the computationally intensive GA every time. Three dimensional plots of the required variation in PID/FOPID controller parameters with reduced process parameters have been shown as a guideline for the operator. Parametric robustness of the reported GP based tuning rules has also been shown with credible simulation examples.

Fractional Order Phase Shaper Design with Routh's Criterion for Iso-damped Control System

Phase curve of an open loop system is flat in nature if the derivative of phase with respect to frequency is zero. With a flat phase curve, the corresponding closed-loop system exhibits an iso-damped property i.e. maintains constant overshoot with the change of gain and with other parametric variations. In recent past application, fractional order (FO) phase shapers have been proposed by contemporary researchers to achieve enhanced parametric robustness. In this paper, a simple Routh tabulation based methodology is proposed to design an appropriate FO phase shaper to achieve phase flattening in a control loop, comprising a system, controlled by a classical PID controller. The method is demonstrated using MATLAB simulation of a second order DC motor plant and also a first order with time delay system.
