On the torsion growth in quadratic number fields for elliptic curves defined over the rationals

Given an elliptic curve defined over the field of rational numbers, it is known how its torsion subgroup may grow when we make a base change to a quadratic number field. In this paper we consider the inverse question: if we have the elliptic curve defined over the rationals and we know how the torsion subgroup grows, what can we say about the field? Our main result gives an explicit relationship between the primes dividing the conductor of the curve and the conductor of the extension as a first approach to a better understanding of this problem.

Automorphy of $\mathrm{GL}_2\otimes \mathrm{GL}_n$ in the self-dual case

In this paper we establish a new case of Langlands functoriality. More precisely, we prove that the tensor product of the compatible system of Galois representations attached to a level-1 classical modular form and the compatible system attached to an n-dimensional RACP automorphic representation of GL_n of the adeles of Q is automorphic, for any positive integer n, under some natural hypotheses (namely regularity and irreducibility), and a mild restriction on the level of the n-dimensional representation.

Locally cyclic extensions with Galois group $GL_2(p)$

Using Galois representations attached to elliptic curves, we construct Galois extensions of $\mathbb{Q}$ with group $GL_2(p)$ in which all decomposition groups are cyclic. This is the first such realization for all primes $p$.

Deformation rings and images of Galois representations

Let $\mathcal{G}$ be a connected reductive almost simple group over the Witt ring $W(\mathbb{F})$ for $\mathbb{F}$ a finite field of characteristic $p$. Let $R$ and $R'$ be complete noetherian local $W(\mathbb{F})$ -algebras with residue field $\mathbb{F}$. Under a mild condition on $p$ in relation to structural constants of $\mathcal{G}$, we show the following results: (1) Every closed subgroup $H$ of $\mathcal{G}(R)$ with full residual image $\mathcal{G}(\mathbb{F})$ is a conjugate of a group $\mathcal{G}(A)$ for $A\subset R$ a closed subring that is local and has residue field $\mathbb{F}$ . (2) Every surjective homomorphism $\mathcal{G}(R)\to\mathcal{G}(R')$ is, up to conjugation, induced from a ring homomorphism $R\to R'$. (3) The identity map on $\mathcal{G}(R)$ represents the universal deformation of the representation of the profinite group $\mathcal{G}(R)$ given by the reduction map $\mathcal{G}(R)\to\mathcal{G}(\mathbb{F})$. This generalizes results of Dorobisz and Eardley-Manoharmayum and of Manoharmayum, and in addition provides an abstract classification result for closed subgroups of $\mathcal{G}(R)$ with residually full image. We provide an axiomatic framework to study this type of question, also for slightly more general $\mathcal{G}$, and we study in the case at hand in great detail what conditions on $\mathbb{F}$ or on $p$ in relation to $\mathcal{G}$ are necessary for the above results to hold.

Galois families of modular forms and application to weight one

We introduce Galois families of modular forms. They are a new kind of family coming from Galois representations of the absolute Galois groups of rational function fields over the rational field. We exhibit some examples and provide an infinite Galois family of non-liftable weight one Katz modular eigenforms over an algebraic closure of F_p for p in {3,5,7,11}.

Large Galois images for Jacobian varieties of genus 3 curves

Given a prime number l greater than or equal to 5, we construct an infinite family of three-dimensional abelian varieties over Q such that, for any A/Q in the family, the Galois representation ρ_{A, l}: Gal_Q -> GSp(6, l) attached to the l-torsion of A is surjective. Any such variety A will be the Jacobian of a genus 3 curve over Q whose respective reductions at two auxiliary primes we prescribe to provide us with generators of Sp(6, l).

Galois representations and Galois groups over Q

In this paper we generalize results of P. Le Duff to genus n hyperelliptic curves. More precisely, let C/Q be a hyperelliptic genus n curve and let J(C) be the associated Jacobian variety. Assume that there exists a prime p such that J(C) has semistable reduction with toric dimension 1 at p. We provide an algorithm to compute a list of primes l (if they exist) such that the Galois representation attached to the l-torsion of J(C) is surjective onto the group GSp(2n, l). In particular we realize GSp(6, l) as a Galois group over Q for all primes l in [11, 500000].

Classification of subgroups of symplectic groups over finite fields containing a transvection

In this note we give a self-contained proof of the following classification (up to conjugation) of subgroups of the general symplectic group of dimension n over a finite field of characteristic l, for l at least 5, which can be derived from work of Kantor: G is either reducible, symplectically imprimitive or it contains Sp(n, l). This result is for instance useful for proving "big image" results for symplectic Galois representations.

Compatible systems of symplectic Galois representations and the inverse Galois problem II. Transvections and huge image

This article is the second part of a series of three articles about compatible systems of symplectic Galois representations and applications to the inverse Galois problem. This part is concerned with symplectic Galois representations having a huge residual image, by which we mean that a symplectic group of full dimension over the prime field is contained up to conjugation. A key ingredient is a classification of symplectic representations whose image contains a nontrivial transvection: these fall into three very simply describable classes, the reducible ones, the induced ones and those with huge image. Using the idea of an (n,p)-group of Khare, Larsen and Savin we give simple conditions under which a symplectic Galois representation with coefficients in a finite field has a huge image. Finally, we combine this classification result with the main result of the first part to obtain a strenghtened application to the inverse Galois problem.

Automorphic Galois representations and the inverse Galois problem

A strategy to address the inverse Galois problem over Q consists of exploiting the knowledge of Galois representations attached to certain automorphic forms. More precisely, if such forms are carefully chosen, they provide compatible systems of Galois representations satisfying some desired properties, e.g. properties that reflect on the image of the members of the system. In this article we survey some results obtained using this strategy.

On conjectures of Sato-Tate and Bruinier-Kohnen

This article covers three topics. (1) It establishes links between the density of certain subsets of the set of primes and related subsets of the set of natural numbers. (2) It extends previous results on a conjecture of Bruinier and Kohnen in three ways: the CM-case is included; under the assumption of the same error term as in previous work one obtains the result in terms of natural density instead of Dedekind-Dirichlet density; the latter type of density can already be achieved by an error term like in the prime number theorem. (3) It also provides a complete proof of Sato-Tate equidistribution for CM modular forms with an error term similar to that in the prime number theorem.

Compatible systems of symplectic Galois representations and the inverse Galois problem I. Images of projective representations

This article is the first part of a series of three articles about compatible systems of symplectic Galois representations and applications to the inverse Galois problem. In this first part, we determine the smallest field over which the projectivisation of a given symplectic group representation satisfying some natural conditions can be defined. The answer only depends on inner twists. We apply this to the residual representations of a compatible system of symplectic Galois representations satisfying some mild hypothesis and obtain precise information on their projective images for almost all members of the system, under the assumption of huge residual images, by which we mean that a symplectic group of full dimension over the prime field is contained up to conjugation. Finally, we obtain an application to the inverse Galois problem.

Compatible systems of symplectic Galois representations and the inverse Galois problem III. Automorphic construction of compatible systems with suitable local properties

This article is the third and last part of a series of three articles about compatible systems of symplectic Galois representations and applications to the inverse Galois problem. This part proves the following new result for the inverse Galois problem for symplectic groups. For any even positive integer n and any positive integer d, PSp_n(F_{l^d}) or PGSp_n(F_{l^d}) occurs as a Galois group over the rational numbers for a positive density set of primes l. The result is obtained by showing the existence of a regular, algebraic, self-dual, cuspidal automorphic representation of GL_n(A_Q) with local types chosen so as to obtain a compatible system of Galois representations to which the results from Part II of this series apply.

Abelian varieties over number fields, tame ramification and big Galois image

Given a natural number n and a number field K, we show the existence of an integer \ell_0 such that for any prime number \ell\geq \ell_0, there exists a finite extension F/K, unramified in all places above \ell, together with a principally polarized abelian variety A of dimension n over F such that the resulting \ell-torsion representation ρ_{A,\ell} from G_F to GSp(A[\ell](\bar{F})) is surjective and everywhere tamely ramified. In particular, we realize GSp_{2n}(\mathbb{F}_\ell) as the Galois group of a finite tame extension of number fields F'/F such that F is unramified above \ell.

Abelian varieties over finitely generated fields and the conjecture of Geyer and Jarden on torsion

In this paper we prove the Geyer-Jarden conjecture on the torsion part of the Mordell-Weil group for a large class of abelian varieties defined over finitely generated fields of arbitrary characteristic. The class consists of all abelian varieties with big monodromy, i.e., such that the image of Galois representation on l-torsion points, for almost all primes l, contains the full symplectic group.

Big monodromy theorem for abelian varieties over finitely generated fields

An abelian variety over a field K is said to have big monodromy, if the image of the Galois representation on l-torsion points, for almost all primes l contains the full symplectic group. We prove that all abelian varieties over a finitely generated field K with endomorphism ring Z and semistable reduction of toric dimension one at a place of the base field K have big monodromy. We make no assumption on the transcendence degree or on the characteristic of K. This generalizes a recent result of Chris Hall.

Tame Galois realizations of GSp_4(F_l) over Q

In this paper we obtain realizations of the 4-dimensional general symplectic group over a prime field of characteristic $\ell>3$ as the Galois group of a tamely ramified Galois extension of $\mathbb{Q}$. The strategy is to consider the Galois representation $ρ_{\ell}$ attached to the Tate module at $\ell$ of a suitable abelian surface. We need to choose the abelian varieties carefully in order to ensure that the image of $ρ_{\ell}$ is large and simultaneously maintain a control on the ramification of the corresponding Galois extension. We obtain an explicit family of curves of genus 2 such that the Galois representation attached to the $\ell$-torsion points of their Jacobian varieties provide tame Galois realizations of the desired symplectic groups.

Formal groups, supersingular abelian varieties and tame ramification

Let us consider an abelian variety defined over $\mathbb{Q_{\ell}}$ with good supersingular reduction. In this paper we give explicit conditions that ensure that the action of the wild inertia group on the $\ell$-torsion points of the variety is trivial. Furthermore we give a family of curves of genus 2 such that their Jacobian surfaces have good supersingular reduction and satisfy these conditions. We address this question by means of a detailed study of the formal group law attached to abelian varieties.
