Spectral design of confining optical structures by supersymmetry techniques

In this work, we apply supersymmetric transformations to an optical medium with quadratic index distributions on both transversal coordinates defining an elliptic profile. In particular, we implement first- and second-order transformations to construct new multi-parametric gradient index patterns that may host one or two subsidiary guided modes with a wide range of spectral properties and transversal intensity and phase distributions. These transformations may be continued up to an arbitrary order enabling the possibility to control the spectral and propagation properties of light beams.

Balanced Gain-and-Loss Optical Waveguides: Exact Solutions for Guided Modes in Susy-QM

The construction of exactly solvable refractive indices allowing guided TE modes in optical waveguides is investigated within the formalism of Darboux-Crum transformations. We apply the finite-difference algorithm for higher-order supersymmetric quantum mechanics to obtain complex-valued refractive indices admitting all-real eigenvalues in their point spectrum. The new refractive indices are such that their imaginary part gives zero if it is integrated over the entire domain of definition. This property, called condition of zero total area, ensures the conservation of optical power so the refractive index shows balanced gain and loss. Consequently, the complex-valued refractive indices reported in this work include but are not limited to the parity-time invariant case.

Superpositions of bright and dark solitons supporting the creation of balanced gain and loss optical potentials

Bright and dark solitons of the cubic nonlinear Schrodinger equation are used to construct complex-valued potentials with all-real spectrum. The real part of these potentials is equal to the intensity of a bright soliton while their imaginary part is defined by the product of such soliton with its concomitant, a dark soliton. Considering light propagation in Kerr media, the real part of the potential refers to the self-focusing of the signal and the imaginary one provides the system with balanced gain-and-loss rates.

On the construction of non-Hermitian Hamiltonians with all-real spectra through supersymmetric algorithms

The energy spectra of two different quantum systems are paired through supersymmetric algorithms. One of the systems is Hermitian and the other is characterized by a complex-valued potential, both of them with only real eigenvalues in their spectrum. The superpotential that links these systems is complex-valued, parameterized by the solutions of the Ermakov equation, and may be expressed either in nonlinear form or as the logarithmic derivative of a properly chosen complex-valued function. The non-Hermitian systems can be constructed to be either parity-time-symmetric or non-parity-time-symmetric.

Coherent states for exactly solvable time-dependent oscillators generated by Darboux transformations

The Darboux method is commonly used in the coordinate variable to produce new exactly solvable (stationary) potentials in quantum mechanics. In this work we follow a variation introduced by Bagrov, Samsonov, and Shekoyan (BSS) to include the time-variable as a parameter of the transformation. The new potentials are nonstationary and define Hamiltonians which are not integrals of motion for the system under study. We take the stationary oscillator of constant frequency to produce nonstationary oscillators, and also provide an invariant that serves to define uniquely the state of the system. In this sense our approach completes the program of the BSS method since the eigenfunctions of the invariant are an orthonormal basis for the space of solutions of the related Schrodinger equation. The orthonormality holds when the involved functions are evaluated at the same time. The dynamical algebra of the nonstationary oscillators is generated by properly chosen ladder operators and coincides with the Heisenberg algebra. We also construct the related coherent states and show that they form an overcomplete set that minimizes the quadratures defined by the ladder operators. These states are not invariant under time-evolution since their time-dependence relies on the basis of states and not on the complex eigenvalue that labels them. Some concrete examples are provided.

Completeness and Nonclassicality of Coherent States for Generalized Oscillator Algebras

The purposes of this work are (1) to show that the appropriate generalizations of the oscillator algebra permit the construction of a wide set of nonlinear coherent states in unified form; and (2) to clarify the likely contradiction between the nonclassical properties of such nonlinear coherent states and the possibility of finding a classical analog for them since they are P-represented by a delta function. In (1) we prove that a class of nonlinear coherent states can be constructed to satisfy a closure relation that is expressed uniquely in terms of the Meijer G-function. This property automatically defines the delta distribution as the P-representation of such states. Then, in principle, there must be a classical analog for them. Among other examples, we construct a family of nonlinear coherent states for a representation of the su(1,1) Lie algebra that is realized as a deformation of the oscillator algebra. In (2), we use a beam splitter to show that the nonlinear coherent states exhibit properties like anti-bunching that prohibit a classical description for them. We also show that these states lack second order coherence. That is, although the P-representation of the nonlinear coherent states is a delta function, they are not full coherent. Therefore, the systems associated with the generalized oscillator algebras cannot be considered `classical' in the context of the quantum theory of optical coherence.

Exactly solvable one-qubit driving fields generated via non-linear equations

Using the Hubbard representation for $SU(2)$ we write the time-evolution operator of a two-level system in the disentangled form. This allows us to map the corresponding dynamical law into a set of non-linear coupled equations. In order to find exact solutions, we use an inverse approach and find families of time-dependent Hamiltonians whose off-diagonal elements are connected with the Ermakov equation. The physical meaning of the so-obtained Hamiltonians is discussed in the context of the nuclear magnetic resonance phenomenon

SU(1,1) and SU(2) Approaches to the Radial Oscillator: Generalized Coherent States and Squeezing of Variances

It is shown that each one of the Lie algebras su(1,1) and su(2) determine the spectrum of the radial oscillator. States that share the same orbital angular momentum are used to construct the representation spaces of the non-compact Lie group SU(1,1). In addition, three different forms of obtaining the representation spaces of the compact Lie group SU(2) are introduced, they are based on the accidental degeneracies associated with the spherical symmetry of the system as well as on the selection rules that govern the transitions between different energy levels. In all cases the corresponding generalized coherent states are constructed and the conditions to squeeze the involved quadratures are analyzed.

Leaky modes of waveguides as a classical optics analogy of quantum resonances

A classical optics waveguide structure is proposed to simulate resonances of short range one-dimensional potentials in quantum mechanics. The analogy is based on the well known resemblance between the guided and radiation modes of a waveguide with the bound and scattering states of a quantum well. As resonances are scattering states that spend some time in the zone of influence of the scatterer, we associate them with the leaky modes of a waveguide, the latter characterized by suffering attenuation in the direction of propagation but increasing exponentially in the transverse directions. The resemblance is complete since resonances (leaky modes) can be interpreted as bound states (guided modes) with definite lifetime (longitudinal shift). As an immediate application we calculate the leaky modes (resonances) associated with a dielectric homogeneous slab (square well potential) and show that these modes are attenuated as they propagate.

Dynamical Equations, Invariants and Spectrum Generating Algebras of Mechanical Systems with Position-Dependent Mass

We analyze the dynamical equations obeyed by a classical system with position-dependent mass. It is shown that there is a non-conservative force quadratic in the velocity associated to the variable mass. We construct the Lagrangian and the Hamiltonian for this system and find the modifications required in the Euler-Lagrange and Hamilton's equations to reproduce the appropriate Newton's dynamical law. Since the Hamiltonian is not time invariant, we get a constant of motion suited to write the dynamical equations in the form of the Hamilton's ones. The time-dependent first integrals of motion are then obtained from the factorization of such a constant. A canonical transformation is found to map the variable mass equations to those of a constant mass. As particular cases, we recover some recent results for which the dependence of the mass on the position was already unnoticed, and find new solvable potentials of the Pöschl-Teller form which seem to be new. The latter are associated to either the su(1,1) or the su(2) Lie algebras depending on the sign of the Hamiltonian.

Negative time delay for wave reflection from a one-dimensional semi-harmonic well

It is reported that the phase time of particles which are reflected by a one-dimensional semi-harmonic well includes a time delay term which is negative for definite intervals of the incoming energy. In this interval, the absolute value of the negative time delay becomes larger as the incident energy becomes smaller. The model is a rectangular well with zero potential energy at its right and a harmonic-like interaction at its left.

SU(1,1) Coherent States For Position-Dependent Mass Singular Oscillators

The Schroedinger equation for position-dependent mass singular oscillators is solved by means of the factorization method and point transformations. These systems share their spectrum with the conventional singular oscillator. Ladder operators are constructed to close the su(1,1) Lie algebra and the involved point transformations are shown to preserve the structure of the Barut-Girardello and Perelomov coherent states.

A Primer on Resonances in Quantum Mechanics

After a pedagogical introduction to the concept of resonance in classical and quantum mechanics, some interesting applications are discussed. The subject includes resonances occurring as one of the effects of radiative reaction, the resonances involved in the refraction of electromagnetic waves by a medium with a complex refractive index, and quantum decaying systems described in terms of resonant states of the energy. Some useful mathematical approaches like the Fourier transform, the complex scaling method and the Darboux transformation are also reviewed.

Position Dependent Mass Oscillators and Coherent States

The solving of the Schrodinger equation for a position-dependent mass quantum system is studied in two ways. First, it is found the interaction which must be applied on a mass m(x) in order to supply it with a particular spectrum of energies. Second, given a specific potential V(x) acting on the mass m(x), the related spectrum is found. The method of solution is applied to a wide class of position-dependent mass oscillators and the corresponding coherent states are constructed. The analytical expressions of such position-dependent mass coherent states preserve the functional structure of the Glauber states.
