Ultrahigh Q-Frequency product for optomechanical disk resonators with a mechanical shield

We report on optomechanical GaAs disk resonators with ultrahigh quality factor - frequency product Qf. Disks standing on a simple pedestal exhibit GHz breathing modes attaining a Qf of 10^13 measured under vacuum at cryogenic temperature. Clamping losses are found to be the dominant source of dissipation in this configuration. A new type of disk resonator integrating a shield within the pedestal is then proposed and its working principles and performances investigated by numerical simulations. For dimensions compatible with fabrication constraints, the clamping-loss-limited Q reaches 10^7-10^9 corresponding to Qf of 10^16-10^18. This shielded pedestal approach applies to any heterostructure presenting an acoustic mismatch.

Wavelength-sized GaAs optomechanical resonators with GHz frequency

We report on wavelength-sized GaAs optomechanical disk resonators showing ultra-strong optomechanical interaction. We observe optical transduction of a disk mechanical breathing mode with 1.4 GHz frequency and effective mass of ~ 2 pg. The measured vacuum optomechanical coupling rate reaches 0.8 MHz, with a related differential optomechanical coupling factor of 485 GHz/nm. The disk Brownian motion is optically resolved with a sensitivity of 10-17 m/{\sqrt}Hz at room temperature and pressure.

High frequency GaAs nano-optomechanical disk resonator

Optomechanical coupling between a mechanical oscillator and light trapped in a cavity increases when the coupling takes place in a reduced volume. Here we demonstrate a GaAs semiconductor optomechanical disk system where both optical and mechanical energy can be confined in a sub-micron scale interaction volume. We observe giant optomechanical coupling rate up to 100 GHz/nm involving picogram mass mechanical modes with frequency between 100 MHz and 1 GHz. The mechanical modes are singled-out measuring their dispersion as a function of disk geometry. Their Brownian motion is optically resolved with a sensitivity of 10^(-17)m/sqrt(Hz) at room temperature and pressure, approaching the quantum limit imprecision.

Ultra-low loss single-mode silica tapers manufactured by a microheater

Using a ceramic thermoelectric heater, we show highly reproducible fabrication of single-mode sub-wavelength silica tapers with ultra-low loss level. The reproducibility of the process is studied statistically, leading to an average taper transmission of 94%. The best tapers have a transmission superior to 99%, above common level reached by other fabrication methods. The taper profile is inspected along its length and closely follows the exponential profile predicted by the model of Birks and Li. This high degree of control over the taper shape allows a detailed analysis of the transition to the single-mode regime during tapering. As an application of this fabrication method, we present a micro-looped taper probe for evanescent coupling experiments requiring fine spatial selectivity.

Experimental study of the spatial distribution of quantum correlations in a confocal Optical Parametric Oscillator

We study experimentally the spatial distribution of quantum noise in the twin beams produced by a type II Optical Parametric Oscillator operating in a confocal cavity above threshold. The measured intensity correlations are at the same time below the standard quantum limit and not uniformly distributed inside the beams. We show that this feature is an unambiguous evidence for the multimode and nonclassical character of the quantum state generated by the device.
