Entanglement and symmetry resolution in two dimensional free quantum field theories

We present a thorough analysis of the entanglement entropies related to different symmetry sectors of free quantum field theories (QFT) with an internal U(1) symmetry. We provide explicit analytic computations for the charged moments of Dirac and complex scalar fields in two spacetime dimensions, both in the massive and massless cases, using two different approaches. The first one is based on the replica trick, the computation of the partition function on Riemann surfaces with the insertion of a flux $α$, and the introduction of properly modified twist fields, whose two-point function directly gives the scaling limit of the charged moments. With the second method, the diagonalisation in replica space maps the problem to the computation of a partition function on a cut plane, that can be written exactly in terms of the solutions of non-linear differential equations of the Painlevé V type. Within this approach, we also derive an asymptotic expansion for the short and long distance behaviour of the charged moments. Finally, the Fourier transform provides the desired symmetry resolved entropies: at the leading order, they satisfy entanglement equipartition and we identify the subleading terms that break it. Our analytical findings are tested against exact numerical calculations in lattice models.

Symmetry resolved entanglement in gapped integrable systems: a corner transfer matrix approach

We study the symmetry resolved entanglement entropies in gapped integrable lattice models. We use the corner transfer matrix to investigate two prototypical gapped systems with a U(1) symmetry: the complex harmonic chain and the XXZ spin-chain. While the former is a free bosonic system, the latter is genuinely interacting. We focus on a subsystem being half of an infinitely long chain. In both models, we obtain exact expressions for the charged moments and for the symmetry resolved entropies. While for the spin chain we found exact equipartition of entanglement (i.e. all the symmetry resolved entropies are the same), this is not the case for the harmonic system where equipartition is effectively recovered only in some limits. Exploiting the gaussianity of the harmonic chain, we also develop an exact correlation matrix approach to the symmetry resolved entanglement that allows us to test numerically our analytic results.

Full counting statistics in the gapped XXZ spin chain

We exploit the knowledge of the entanglement spectrum in the ground state of the gapped XXZ spin chain to derive asymptotic exact results for the full counting statistics of the transverse magnetisation in a spin block of length. We found that for a subsystem of even length the full counting statistics is Gaussian, while for odd subsystems it is the sum of two Gaussian distributions. We test our analytic predictions with accurate tensor networks simulations. As a byproduct, we also obtain the symmetry (magnetisation) resolved entanglement entropies.

Entanglement and relative entropies for low-lying excited states in inhomogeneous one-dimensional quantum systems

Conformal field theories in curved backgrounds have been used to describe inhomogeneous one-dimensional systems, such as quantum gases in trapping potentials and non-equilibrium spin chains. This approach provided, in a elegant and simple fashion, non-trivial analytic predictions for quantities, such as the entanglement entropy, that are not accessible through other methods. Here, we generalise this approach to low-lying excited states, focusing on the entanglement and relative entropies in an inhomogeneous free-fermionic system. Our most important finding is that the universal scaling function characterising these entanglement measurements is the same as the one for homogeneous systems, but expressed in terms of a different variable. This new scaling variable is a non-trivial function of the subsystem length and system's inhomogeneity that is easily written in terms of the curved metric. We test our predictions against exact numerical calculations in the free Fermi gas trapped by a harmonic potential, finding perfect agreement.

Complex Reaction Kinetics in Chemistry: A unified picture suggested by Mechanics in Physics

Complex biochemical pathways or regulatory enzyme kinetics can be reduced to chains of elementary reactions, which can be described in terms of chemical kinetics. This discipline provides a set of tools for quantifying and understanding the dialogue between reactants, whose framing into a solid and consistent mathematical description is of pivotal importance in the growing field of biotechnology. Among the elementary reactions so far extensively investigated, we recall the socalled Michaelis-Menten scheme and the Hill positive-cooperative kinetics, which apply to molecular binding and are characterized by the absence and the presence, respectively, of cooperative interactions between binding sites, giving rise to qualitative different phenomenologies. However, there is evidence of reactions displaying a more complex, and by far less understood, pattern: these follow the positive-cooperative scenario at small substrate concentration, yet negative-cooperative effects emerge and get stronger as the substrate concentration is increased. In this paper we analyze the structural analogy between the mathematical backbone of (classical) reaction kinetics in Chemistry and that of (classical) mechanics in Physics: techniques and results from the latter shall be used to infer properties on the former.
