Exploring SMEFT Couplings Using the Forward-Backward Asymmetry in Neutral Current Drell-Yan Production at the LHC

Neutral current Drell-Yan (DY) lepton-pair production is considered in the framework of the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT). Using the open-source fit platform xFitter, we investigate the impact of high-statistics measurements of the neutral current DY (NCDY) forward-backward asymmetry $A_{\rm{FB}}$ near the weak boson mass scale in the present and forthcoming stages of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Besides recovering earlier results on the $A_{\rm{FB}}$ sensitivity to parton distribution functions, we analyze the precision determination of $Z$-boson couplings to left-handed and right-handed $u$-quarks and $d$-quarks, and explore Beyond-Standard-Model contributions using the SMEFT framework. We perform a sensitivity study and comment on the role of the $A_{\rm{FB}}$ asymmetry for the electroweak SMEFT fit and precision $Z$-boson physics at the LHC and high-luminosity HL-LHC.

Comparison of CMS measurements with predictions at NLO applying the Parton Branching Method and PYTHIA

In August 2023, more than 30 students joined the Special Remote DESY summer-school to work on projects of importance for LHC experiments. In a dedicated initiative, analyses that had not been incorporated into the RIVET package were implemented and verified. Here, a brief description of the accomplished work is given, and a comparison of the measurements with predictions obtained from matched standard parton shower Monte Carlo event generators as well as with those obtained from Parton-Branching TMDs with corresponding parton showers are presented.

Application of TMD parton showers obtained with the Parton Branching approach to Drell Yan + jets production

Calculations of Drell-Yan (DY) production at next-to-leading (NLO) order have been combined with Transverse Momentum Dependent (TMD) distributions obtained with the Parton Branching (PB). The predictions show a remarkable agreement with DY measurement from E605 experiment, consistent with previous results we obtained for R209, PHENIX, CMS and ATLAS experiments. We also present predictions for Z+jet measurements showing the importance of TMD parton shower contributions to the jet multiplicity. We show that PB-TMD parton density and the corresponding PB-TMD parton shower can be combined with leading-order (LO) matrix element using the newly developed TMD merging algorithm to obtain a very good description of measurements over a wide kinematic range.

Recent developments in the Parton Branching approach to TMDs

The Parton Branching (PB) Method describes the evolution of transverse momentum dependent parton densities (TMDs). The obtained TMDs can be used in Monte Carlo generators to describe physical observables. We give an overview of recent developments, in particular the new application of PB TMDs in Drell-Yan + jets production, the four-flavor and five-flavor schemes for heavy quark contributions, and the inclusion of QED corrections in the PB evolution.

Extending parton branching TMDs to small $x$

We explore the possibility to include small-$x$ dynamics effects in the parton branching (PB) approach to transverse momentum dependent (TMD) parton distribution functions. To this end, we first revisit the PB method at leading order, presenting a new fit to inclusive-DIS precision data, and performing a numerical study of the dynamic soft-gluon resolution scale. Next we investigate the effects of modified CCFM kernels, including both Sudakov and non-Sudakov form factors.

TMD parton distributions from parton showers

We present the determination of Transverse Momentum Dependent (TMD) parton distributions from Monte Carlo parton showers. We investigate the effective TMD distributions obtained from the PYTHIA8 and HERWIG6 parton showers and compare them to the TMD distributions determined within the Parton Branching method.

Nucleon spin structure functions at NNLO in the presence of target mass corrections and higher twist effects

We extract polarized parton distribution functions (PPDFs), referred to as "KTA17," together with the highly correlated strong coupling $α_s$ from recent and up-to-date $g_1$ and $g_2$ polarized structure functions world data at next-to-next-to-leading order in perturbative QCD. The stability and reliability of the results are ensured by including nonperturbative target mass corrections as well as higher-twist terms which are particularly important at the large-$x$ region at low Q$^2$. Their role in extracting the PPDFs in the nucleon is studied. Sum rules are discussed and compared with other results from the literature. This analysis is made by means of the Jacobi polynomials expansion technique to the DGLAP evolution. The uncertainties on the observables and on the PPDFs throughout this paper are computed using standard Hessian error propagation which served to provide a more realistic estimate of the PPDFs uncertainties.

Target mass corrections and higher twist effects in polarized deep-inelastic scattering

We perform a next-to-leading-order QCD analysis to world data on polarized structure functions $g_1$ and $g_2$ in a fixed-flavor number scheme. We include target mass corrections and higher twist effects in our fitting procedure and study their non-negligible effects on physically interesting quantities. Twist-3 contributions to both polarized structure functions are determined, and the accuracy of the extracted polarized parton distribution functions is improved. $^{3}\rm He$ and $^{3}\rm H$ polarized structure functions are described based on our fit result. Moreover, sum rules are derived and compared with available theoretical and experimental results.
