Generalization of terms via universal algebra

We provide a new foundational approach to the generalization of terms up to equational theories. We interpret generalization problems in a universal-algebraic setting making a key use of projective and exact algebras in the variety associated to the considered equational theory. We prove that the generality poset of a problem and its type (i.e., the cardinality of a complete set of least general solutions) can be studied in this algebraic setting. Moreover, we identify a class of varieties where the study of the generality poset can be fully reduced to the study of the congruence lattice of the 1-generated free algebra. We apply our results to varieties of algebras and to (algebraizable) logics. In particular we obtain several examples of unitary type: abelian groups; commutative monoids and commutative semigroups; all varieties whose 1-generated free algebra is trivial, e.g., lattices, semilattices, varieties without constants whose operations are idempotent; Boolean algebras, Kleene algebras, and Gödel algebras, which are the equivalent algebraic semantics of, respectively, classical, 3-valued Kleene, and Gödel-Dummett logic. Finally, we prove that the variety of MV-algebras, the equivalent algebraic semantics of Lukasiewicz logic, has nullary type.

Blockwise Gluings And Amalgamation Failures in Integral Residuated Lattices

We introduce the blockwise gluing construction. This describes residuated integral chains which can be decomposed into (possibly) partial algebras, stacked one on top of the other, and such that elements in a certain component multiply in blocks, i.e., in the same way, with respect to lower components. This construction generalizes that of 1-sums (or ordinal sums). As first main results, we provide finite axiomatizations for varieties generated by particular chains that are gluings of their archimedean components. For such varieties we also prove the finite embeddability property, and as a consequence, the decidability of their universal theory. Moreover, we solve in the negative several longstanding open problems in the literature about the amalgamation property (AP). Indeed, we provide denumerably many new examples of varieties lacking the AP, including: semilinear (commutative) integral residuated lattices, semilinear FL_w-algebras, MTL-algebras, involutive and pseudocomplemented MTL-algebras, and all their n-potent subvarieties for n > 1. For the commutative varieties, this also entails that the associated substructural logics do not have the deductive interpolation property.

The Algebras of Lewis's Counterfactuals

The logico-algebraic study of Lewis's hierarchy of variably strict conditional logics has been essentially unexplored, hindering our understanding of their mathematical foundations, and the connections with other logical systems. This work aims to fill this gap by providing a comprehensive logico-algebraic analysis of Lewis's logics. We begin by introducing novel finite axiomatizations for varying strengths of Lewis's logics, distinguishing between global and local consequence relations on Lewisian sphere models. We then demonstrate that the global consequence relation is strongly algebraizable in terms of a specific class of Boolean algebras with a binary operator representing the counterfactual implication; in contrast, we show that the local consequence relation is generally not algebraizable, although it can be characterized as the degree-preserving logic over the same algebraic models. Further, we delve into the algebraic semantics of Lewis's logics, developing two dual equivalences with respect to particular topological spaces. In more details, we show a duality with respect to the topological version of Lewis's sphere models, and also with respect to Stone spaces with a selection function; using the latter, we demonstrate the strong completeness of Lewis's logics with respect to sphere models. Finally, we draw some considerations concerning the limit assumption over sphere models.

Structural and universal completeness in algebra and logic

In this work we study the notions of structural and universal completeness both from the algebraic and logical point of view. In particular, we provide new algebraic characterizations of quasivarieties that are actively and passively universally complete, and passively structurally complete. We apply these general results to varieties of bounded lattices and to quasivarieties related to substructural logics. In particular we show that a substructural logic satisfying weakening is passively structurally complete if and only if every classical contradiction is explosive in it. Moreover, we fully characterize the passively structurally complete varieties of MTL-algebras, i.e., bounded commutative integral residuated lattices generated by chains.

Maximal theories of product logic

Product logic is one of the main fuzzy logics arising from a continuous t-norm, and its equivalent algebraic semantics is the variety of product algebras. In this contribution, we study maximal filters of product algebras, and their relation with product hoops. The latter constitute the variety of 0-free subreducts of product algebras. Given any product hoop, we construct a product algebra of which the product hoop is (isomorphic to) a maximal filter. This entails that product hoops coincide exactly with the maximal filters of product algebras, seen as residuated lattices. In this sense, we characterize the equational theory of maximal filters of product algebras.

Gluing residuated lattices

We introduce and characterize various gluing constructions for residuated lattices that intersect on a common subreduct, and which are subalgebras, or appropriate subreducts, of the resulting structure. Starting from the 1-sum construction (also known as ordinal sum for residuated structures), where algebras that intersect only in the top element are glued together, we first consider the gluing on a congruence filter, and then add a lattice ideal as well. We characterize such constructions in terms of (possibly partial) operators acting on (possibly partial) residuated structures. As particular examples of gluing constructions, we obtain the non-commutative version of some rotation constructions, and an interesting variety of semilinear residuated lattices that are 2-potent. This study also serves as a first attempt toward the study of amalgamation of non-commutative residuated lattices, by constructing an amalgam in the special case where the common subalgebra in the V-formation is either a special (congruence) filter or the union of a filter and an ideal.

Encoding de Finetti's coherence within Lukasiewicz logic and MV-algebras

The present paper investigates proof-theoretical and algebraic properties for the probability logic FP(L,L), meant for reasoning on the uncertainty of Lukasiewicz events. Methodologically speaking, we will consider a translation function between formulas of FP(L,L) to the propositional language of Lukasiewicz logic that allows us to apply the latter and the well-developed theory of MV-algebras directly to probabilistic reasoning. More precisely, leveraging on such translation map, we will show proof-theoretical properties for FP(L,L) and introduce a class of algebras with respect to which FP(L,L) will be proved to be locally sound and complete. Finally, we will apply these previous results to investigate what we called "probabilistic unification problem". In this respect, we will prove that Ghilardi's algebraic view on unification can be extended to our case and, on par with the Lukasiewicz propositional case, we show that probabilistic unification is of nullary type.

The polyhedral geometry of Wajsberg hoops

We show that the category of finitely presented Wajsberg hoops with homomorphisms is dually equivalent to a particular subcategory of rational polyhedra with Z-maps. We use the duality to provide a geometrical characterization of finitely generated projective and exact Wajsberg hoops. As applications, we study logical properties of the positive fragment of Lukasiewicz logic. We show that, while deducibility in the fragment is equivalent to deducibility among positive formulas in Lukasiewicz logic, the same is not true for admissibility of rules. Moreover, we show that the unification type of Wajsberg hoops is nullary, while the exact unification type is unitary, therefore showing decidability of admissible rules in the fragment.

Projectivity in (bounded) integral residuated lattices

In this paper we study projective algebras in varieties of (bounded) commutative integral residuated lattices from an algebraic (as opposed to categorical) point of view. In particular we use a well-established construction in residuated lattices: the ordinal sum. Its interaction with divisibility makes our results have a better scope in varieties of divisibile commutative integral residuated lattices, and it allows us to show that many such varieties have the property that every finitely presented algebra is projective. In particular, we obtain results on (Stonean) Heyting algebras, certain varieties of hoops, and product algebras. Moreover, we study varieties with a Boolean retraction term, showing for instance that in a variety with a Boolean retraction term all finite Boolean algebras are projective. Finally, we connect our results with the theory of Unification.

Strictly join irreducible varieties of residuated lattices

We study (strictly) join irreducible varieties in the lattice of subvarieties of residuated lattices. We explore the connections with well-connected algebras and suitable generalizations, focusing in particular on representable varieties. Moreover we find weakened notions of Hallden completeness that characterize join irreducibility. We characterize strictly join irreducible varieties of basic hoops, and use the generalized rotation construction to find strictly join irreducible varieties in subvarieties of MTL-algebras. We also obtain some general results about linear varieties of residuated lattices, with a particular focus on representable varieties, and a characterization for linear varieties of basic hoops.

Hyperstates of Involutive MTL-Algebras that Satisfy $(2x)^2 = 2(x^2)$

States of MV-algebras have been the object of intensive study and attempts of generalizations. The aim of this contribution is to provide a preliminary investigation for states of prelinear semihoops and hyperstates of algebras in the variety generated by perfect and involutive MTL-algebras (IBP0-algebras for short). Grounding on a recent result showing that IBP0-algebras can be constructed from a Boolean algebra, a prelinear semihoop and a suitably defined operator between them, our first investigation on states of prelinear semihoops will support and justify the notion of hyperstate for IBP0- algebras and will actually show that each such map can be represented by a probability measure on its Boolean skeleton, and a state on a suitably defined abelian l-group.

A topological approach to MTL-algebras

We dualize a construction of Aguzzoli-Flaminio-Ugolini of a large class of MTL-algebras from ordered quadruples consisting of a Boolean algebra, a generalized MTL-algebra, and two maps parameterizing the connection between these pieces. Our dualized construction gives a uniform way of building the extended Priestley duals of MTL-algebras in this class from the Stone duals of their Boolean skeletons, the extended Priestley duals of their radicals, and a family of closure operators associating the two. In order to facilitate this work, we also offer some new results regarding the extended Priestley duals of MTL-algebras and GMTL-algebras.

Toward a probability theory for product logic: states, integral representation and reasoning

The aim of this paper is to extend probability theory from the classical to the product t-norm fuzzy logic setting. More precisely, we axiomatize a generalized notion of finitely additive probability for product logic formulas, called state, and show that every state is the Lebesgue integral with respect to a unique regular Borel probability measure. Furthermore, the relation between states and measures is shown to be one-one. In addition, we study geometrical properties of the convex set of states and show that extremal states, i.e., the extremal points of the state space, are the same as the truth-value assignments of the logic. Finally, we axiomatize a two-tiered modal logic for probabilistic reasoning on product logic events and prove soundness and completeness with respect to probabilistic spaces, where the algebra is a free product algebra and the measure is a state in the above sense.
