Critical solutions of scalarized black holes

We consider charged black holes with scalar hair obtained in a class of Einstein-Maxwell-scalar models, where the scalar field is coupled to the Maxwell invariant with a quartic coupling function. Besides the Reissner-Nordström black holes, these models allow for black holes with scalar hair. Scrutinizing the domain of existence of these hairy black holes, we observe a critical behavior: A limiting configuration is encountered at a critical value of the charge, where spacetime splits into two parts: an inner spacetime with a finite scalar field and an outer extremal Reissner-Nordström spacetime. Such a pattern was first observed in the context of gravitating non-Abelian magnetic monopoles and their hairy black holes.

Quasinormal modes of hot, cold and bald Einstein-Maxwell-scalar black holes

Einstein-Maxwell-scalar models allow for different classes of black hole solutions, depending on the non-minimal coupling function $f(ϕ)$ employed, between the scalar field and the Maxwell invariant. Here, we address the linear mode stability of the black hole solutions obtained recently for a quartic coupling function, $f(ϕ)=1+αϕ^4$ [1]. Besides the bald Reissner-Nordström solutions, this coupling allows for two branches of scalarized black holes, termed cold and hot, respectively. For these three branches of black holes we calculate the spectrum of quasinormal modes. It consists of polar scalar-led modes, polar and axial electromagnetic-led modes, and polar and axial gravitational-led modes. We demonstrate that the only unstable mode present is the radial scalar-led mode of the cold branch. Consequently, the bald Reissner-Nordström branch and the hot scalarized branch are both mode-stable. The non-trivial scalar field in the scalarized background solutions leads to the breaking of the degeneracy between axial and polar modes present for Reissner-Nordström solutions. This isospectrality is only slightly broken on the cold branch, but it is strongly broken on the hot branch.

Polar quasinormal modes of the scalarized Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet black holes

We study the polar quasinormal modes of spontaneously scalarized black holes in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory. In previous works we showed that a set of nodeless solutions of the fundamental branch of the model studied in [1] are stable under both radial [2] and axial perturbations [3]. Here we calculate the polar quasinormal modes and show that this set of solutions is stable against the polar perturbations as well. Thus for a certain region of the parameter space the scalarized black holes are potentially stable physically interesting objects. The spectrum of the polar quasinormal modes differs both quantitatively and qualitatively from the Schwarzschild one which offers the possibility to test the Gauss-Bonnet theory via the future gravitational wave observations.

Axial perturbations of the scalarized Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet black holes

We study the axial perturbations of spontaneously scalarized black holes in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet (EGB) theories. We consider the nodeless solutions of the fundamental branch of the model studied in [1], which possesses a region of radially stable configurations, as shown in [2]. Here we show that almost all of the radially stable black holes are also stable under axial perturbations. When the axial potential is no longer strictly positive, we make use of the S-deformation method to show stability. As for the radial perturbations, hyperbolicity is lost below a certain critical horizon size for a fixed coupling constant. In the stable region, we determine the spectrum of the quasinormal modes by time evolution and by solving the associated time-independent eigenvalue problem.

Quasinormal modes of dilatonic Reissner-Nordström black holes

We calculate the quasinormal modes of static spherically symmetric dilatonic Reissner-Nordström black holes for general values of the electric charge and of the dilaton coupling constant. The spectrum of quasinormal modes is composed of five families of modes: polar and axial gravitational-led modes, polar and axial electromagnetic-led modes, and polar scalar-led modes. We make a quantitative analysis of the spectrum, revealing its dependence on the electric charge and on the dilaton coupling constant. For large electric charge and large dilaton coupling, strong deviations from the Reissner-Nordström modes arise. In particular, isospectrality is strongly broken, both for the electromagnetic-led and the gravitational-led modes, for large values of the charge.

How to relax the cosmological neutrino mass bound

We study the impact of non-standard momentum distributions of cosmic neutrinos on the anisotropy spectrum of the cosmic microwave background and the matter power spectrum of the large scale structure. We show that the neutrino distribution has almost no unique observable imprint, as it is almost entirely degenerate with the effective number of neutrino flavours, $N_{\mathrm{eff}}$, and the neutrino mass, $m_ν$. Performing a Markov chain Monte Carlo analysis with current cosmological data, we demonstrate that the neutrino mass bound heavily depends on the assumed momentum distribution of relic neutrinos. The message of this work is simple and has to our knowledge not been pointed out clearly before: Cosmology allows that neutrinos have larger masses if their average momentum is larger than that of a perfectly thermal distribution. Here we provide an example in which the mass limits are relaxed by a factor of two.

Wormholes Immersed in Rotating Matter

We consider Ellis wormholes immersed in rotating matter in the form of an ordinary complex boson field. The resulting wormholes may possess full reflection symmetry with respect to the two asymptotically flat spacetime regions. However, there arise also wormhole solutions where the reflection symmetry is broken. The latter always appear in pairs. We analyse the properties of these rotating wormholes and show that their geometry may feature single throats or double throats. We also discuss the ergoregions and the lightring structure of these wormholes.

Symmetric and Asymmetric Wormholes Immersed In Rotating Matter

We consider four-dimensional wormholes immersed in bosonic matter. While their existence is based on the presence of a phantom field, many of their interesting physical properties are bestowed upon them by an ordinary complex scalar field, which carries only a mass term, but no self-interactions. For instance, the rotation of the scalar field induces a rotation of the throat as well. Moreover, the bosonic matter need not be symmetrically distributed in both asymptotically flat regions, leading to symmetric and asymmetric rotating wormhole spacetimes. The presence of the rotating matter also allows for wormholes with a double throat.

Wormholes Immersed in Rotating Matter

We demonstrate that rotating matter sets the throat of an Ellis wormhole into rotation, allowing for wormholes which possess full reflection symmetry with respect to the two asymptotically flat spacetime regions. We analyze the properties of this new type of rotating wormholes and show that the wormhole geometry can change from a single throat to a double throat configuration. We further discuss the ergoregions and the lightring structure of these wormholes.

Some New Results on Charged Compact Boson Stars

In this work we present some new results obtained in a study of the phase diagram of charged compact boson stars in a theory involving a complex scalar field with a conical potential coupled to a U(1) gauge field and gravity. We here obtain new bifurcation points in this model. We present a detailed discussion of the various regions of the phase diagram with respect to the bifurcation points. The theory is seen to contain rich physics in a particular domain of the phase diagram.

Spontaneous Symmetry Breaking in Wormholes Spacetimes with Matter

When bosonic matter in the form of a complex scalar field is added to Ellis wormholes, the phenomenon of spontaneous symmetry breaking is observed. Symmetric solutions possess full reflection symmetry with respect to the radial coordinate of the two asymptotically flat spacetime regions connected by the wormhole, whereas asymmetric solutions do not possess this symmetry. Depending on the size of the throat, at bifurcation points pairs of asymmetric solutions arise from or merge with the symmetric solutions. These asymmetric solutions are energetically favoured. When the backreaction of the boson field is taken into account, this phenomenon is retained. Moreover, in a certain region of the solution space both symmetric and asymmetric solutions exhibit a transition from single throat to double throat configurations.
