Hochschild cohomology of group extensions of quantum symmetric algebras

Quantum symmetric algebras (or noncommutative polynomial rings) arise in many places in mathematics. In this article we find the multiplicative structure of their Hochschild cohomology when the coefficients are in an arbitrary bimodule algebra. When this bimodule algebra is a finite group extension (under a diagonal action) of a quantum symmetric algebra, we give explicitly the graded vector space structure. This yields a complete description of the Hochschild cohomology ring of the corresponding skew group algebra.

Support varieties and representation type of small quantum groups

In this paper we provide a wildness criterion for any finite dimensional Hopf algebra with finitely generated cohomology. This generalizes a result of Farnsteiner to not necessarily cocommutative Hopf algebras over ground fields of arbitrary characteristic. Our proof uses the theory of support varieties for modules, one of the crucial ingredients being a tensor product property for some special modules. As an application we prove a conjecture of Cibils stating that small quantum groups of rank at least two are wild.

Quantum differentiation and chain maps of bimodule complexes

We consider a finite group acting on a vector space and the corresponding skew group algebra generated by the group and the symmetric algebra of the space. This skew group algebra illuminates the resulting orbifold and serves as a replacement for the ring of invariant polynomials, especially in the eyes of cohomology. One analyzes the Hochschild cohomology of the skew group algebra using isomorphisms which convert between resolutions. We present an explicit chain map from the bar resolution to the Koszul resolution of the symmetric algebra which induces various isomorphisms on Hochschild homology and cohomology, some of which have appeared in the literature before. This approach unifies previous results on homology and cohomology of both the symmetric algebra and skew group algebra. We determine induced combinatorial cochain maps which invoke quantum differentiation (expressed by Demazure-BBG operators).

Finite groups acting linearly: Hochschild cohomology and the cup product

When a finite group acts linearly on a complex vector space, the natural semi-direct product of the group and the polynomial ring over the space forms a skew group algebra. This algebra plays the role of the coordinate ring of the resulting orbifold and serves as a substitute for the ring of invariant polynomials from the viewpoint of geometry and physics. Its Hochschild cohomology predicts various Hecke algebras and deformations of the orbifold. In this article, we investigate the ring structure of the Hochschild cohomology of the skew group algebra. We show that the cup product coincides with a natural smash product, transferring the cohomology of a group action into a group action on cohomology. We express the algebraic structure of Hochschild cohomology in terms of a partial order on the group (modulo the kernel of the action). This partial order arises after assigning to each group element the codimension of its fixed point space. We describe the algebraic structure for Coxeter groups, where this partial order is given by the reflection length function; a similar combinatorial description holds for an infinite family of complex reflection groups.

Yetter-Drinfeld modules under cocycle twists

We give an explicit formula for the correspondence between simple Yetter-Drinfeld modules for certain finite-dimensional pointed Hopf algebras $H$ and those for cocycle twists $H^σ$ of $H$. This implies an equivalence between modules for their Drinfeld doubles. To illustrate our results, we consider the restricted two-parameter quantum groups ${\mathfrak{u}}_{r,s}({\mathfrak{sl}}_n)$ under conditions on the parameters guaranteeing that ${\mathfrak{u}}_{r,s}({\mathfrak{sl}}_n)$ is a Drinfeld double of its Borel subalgebra. We determine explicit correspondences between ${\mathfrak{u}}_{r,s}({\mathfrak{sl}}_n)$-modules for different values of $r$ and $s$ and provide examples where no such correspondence can exist. Our examples were obtained via the computer algebra system {\sc Singular::Plural}.

Fusion subcategories of representation categories of twisted quantum doubles of finite groups

We describe all fusion subcategories of the representation category of a twisted quantum double of a finite group. In view of the fact that every group-theoretical braided fusion category can be embedded into a representation category of a twisted quantum double of a finite group, this gives a complete description of all group-theoretical braided fusion categories. We describe the lattice and give formulas for some invariants of the fusion subcategories of representation category of a twisted quantum double of a finite group. We also give a characterization of group-theoretical braided fusion categories as equivariantizations of pointed categories.

Hopf quivers and Nichols algebras in positive characteristic

We apply a combinatorial formula of the first author and Rosso, for products in Hopf quiver algebras, to determine the structure of Nichols algebras. We illustrate this technique by explicitly constructing new examples of Nichols algebras in positive characteristic. We further describe the corresponding Radford biproducts and some liftings of these biproducts, which are new finite dimensional pointed Hopf algebras.

Bialgebra cohomology, pointed Hopf algebras, and deformations

We give explicit formulas for maps in a long exact sequence connecting bialgebra cohomology to Hochschild cohomology. We give a sufficient condition for the connecting homomorphism to be surjective. We apply these results to compute all bialgebra two-cocycles of certain Radford biproducts (bosonizations). These two-cocycles are precisely those associated to the finite dimensional pointed Hopf algebras in the recent classification of Andruskiewitsch and Schneider, in an interpretation of these Hopf algebras as graded bialgebra deformations of Radford biproducts.

Braid group representations from twisted quantum doubles of finite groups

We investigate the braid group representations arising from categories of representations of twisted quantum doubles of finite groups. For these categories, we show that the resulting braid group representations always factor through finite groups, in contrast to the categories associated with quantum groups at roots of unity. We also show that in the case of p-groups, the corresponding pure braid group representations factor through a finite p-group, which answers a question asked of the first author by V. Drinfeld.

Hochschild Cohomology and Graded Hecke Algebras

We develop and collect techniques for determining Hochschild cohomology of skew group algebras S(V)#G and apply our results to graded Hecke algebras. We discuss the explicit computation of certain types of invariants under centralizer subgroups, focusing on the infinite family of complex reflection groups G(r,p,n) to illustrate our ideas. Resulting formulas for Hochschild two-cocycles give information about deformations of S(V)#G and, in particular, about graded Hecke algebras. We expand the definition of a graded Hecke algebra to allow a nonfaithful action of G on V, and we show that there exist nontrivial graded Hecke algebras for G(r,1,n), in constrast to the case of the natural reflection representation. We prove that one of these graded Hecke algebras is equivalent to an algebra that has appeared before in a different form.

Varieties for Modules of Quantum Elementary Abelian Groups

We define a rank variety for a module of a noncocommutative Hopf algebra $A = Λ\rtimes G$ where $Λ= k[X_1, ..., X_m]/(X_1^{\ell}, ..., X_m^{\ell})$, $G = ({\mathbb Z}/\ell{\mathbb Z})^m$, and $\text{char} k$ does not divide $\ell$, in terms of certain subalgebras of $A$ playing the role of "cyclic shifted subgroups". We show that the rank variety of a finitely generated module $M$ is homeomorphic to the support variety of $M$ defined in terms of the action of the cohomology algebra of $A$. As an application we derive a theory of rank varieties for the algebra $Λ$. When $\ell=2$, rank varieties for $Λ$-modules were constructed by Erdmann and Holloway using the representation theory of the Clifford algebra. We show that the rank varieties we obtain for $Λ$-modules coincide with those of Erdmann and Holloway.

Quantum Group Actions, Twisting Elements, and Deformations of Algebras

We construct twisting elements for module algebras of restricted two-parameter quantum groups from factors of their R-matrices. We generalize the theory of Giaquinto and Zhang to universal deformation formulas for categories of module algebras and give examples arising from R-matrices of two-parameter quantum groups.

Algebraic deformations arising from orbifolds with discrete torsion

We develop methods for computing Hochschild cohomology groups and deformations of crossed product rings. We use these methods to find deformations of a ring associated to a particular orbifold with discrete torsion, and give a presentation of the center of the resulting deformed ring. This connects with earlier calculations by Vafa and Witten of chiral numbers and deformations of a similar orbifold.

Two-Parameter Quantum Groups and Drinfel'd Doubles

We investigate two-parameter quantum groups corresponding to the general linear and special linear Lie algebras gl_n and sl_n. We show that these quantum groups can be realized as Drinfel'd doubles of certain Hopf subalgebras with respect to Hopf pairings. Using the Hopf pairing, we construct a corresponding R-matrix and a quantum Casimir element. We discuss isomorphisms among these quantum groups and connections with multiparameter quantum groups.

Representations of Two-Parameter Quantum Groups and Schur-Weyl Duality

We determine the finite-dimensional simple modules for two-parameter quantum groups corresponding to the general linear and special linear Lie algebras gl_n and sl_n, and give a complete reducibility result. These quantum groups have a natural n-dimensional module V. We prove an analogue of Schur-Weyl duality in this setting: the centralizer algebra of the quantum group action on the k-fold tensor power of V is a quotient of a Hecke algebra for all n and is isomorphic to the Hecke algebra in case n\geq k.
