A light-induced charge order mode in a metastable cuprate ladder

We report the observation of an emergent charge order mode in the optically-excited cuprate ladder Sr$_{14}$Cu$_{24}$O$_{41}$. Near-infrared light in the ladder plane drives a symmetry-protected electronic metastable state together with a partial melting of the equilibrium charge order. Our time-resolved resonant inelastic x-ray scattering measurements at the upper Hubbard band reveal a gapless collective excitation dispersing from the charge-order wavevector up to 0.8 eV with a slope on the order of the quasiparticle velocity. These findings reveal a regime where correlated carriers acquire itinerant character at finite momentum, and charge order becomes dynamically fluctuating, offering a platform to explore light-induced pairing instabilities.

Direct Observation of the Lindhard Continuum using Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering

Understanding the excitations of quantum materials is essential for unraveling how their microscopic constituents interact. Among these, particle-hole excitations form a particularly important class, as they govern fundamental processes such as screening, dissipation, and transport. In metals, the continuum of electron-hole excitations is described by the Lindhard function. Although central to the theory of Fermi liquids, the corresponding Lindhard continuum has remained experimentally elusive. Here, we report its direct observation in the weakly correlated metal MgB$_{2}$ using ultra-soft resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS). We resolve a linearly dispersing excitation with velocity comparable to the Fermi velocity and find quantitative agreement with simulations of the non-interacting charge susceptibility. A detailed analysis and decomposition of the simulations reveal the intra-band origin of this low-energy excitation, confirming it as the Lindhard continuum. Our results establish ultra-soft RIXS as a momentum-resolved probe of the fermiology in metals and call for deeper investigations of continuum features in RIXS and related spectroscopy of other materials beyond MgB$_{2}$.

Field tuning Kitaev systems for spin fractionalization and topological order

The honeycomb Kitaev model describes a $Z_2$ spin liquid with topological order and fractionalized excitations consisting of gapped $π$-fluxes and free Majorana fermions. Competing interactions, even when not very strong, are known to destabilize the Kitaev spin liquid. Magnetic fields are a convenient parameter for tuning between different phases of the Kitaev systems, and have even been investigated for potentially counteracting the effects of other destabilizing interactions leading to a revival of the topological phase. Here we review the progress in understanding the effects of magnetic fields on some of the perturbed Kitaev systems, particularly on fractionalization and topological order.

CDMFT+HFD : an extension of dynamical mean field theory for nonlocal interactions applied to the single band extended Hubbard model

We examine the phase diagram of the extended Hubbard model on a square lattice, for both attractive and repulsive nearest-neighbor interactions, using CDMFT+HFD, a combination of Cluster Dynamical Mean Field theory (CDMFT) and a Hartree-Fock mean-field decoupling of the inter-cluster extended interaction. For attractive non-local interactions, this model exhibits a region of phase separation near half-filling, in the vicinity of which we find pockets of d-wave superconductivity, decaying rapidly as a function of doping, with disconnected patches of extended s-wave order at smaller (higher) electron densities. On the other hand, when the extended interaction is repulsive, a Mott insulating state at half-filling is destabilized by hole doping, in the strong-coupling limit, in favor of d-wave superconductivity. At the particle-hole invariant chemical potential, we find a first-order phase transition from antiferromagnetism (AF) to d-wave superconductivity as a function of the attractive nearest-neighbor interaction, along with a deviation of the density from the half-filled limit. A repulsive extended interaction instead favors charge-density wave (CDW) order at half-filling.

Theory of phonon instabilities in Weyl semimetals at high magnetic fields

The behavior of three-dimensional (3D) semimetals under strong magnetic fields is a topic of recurring interest in condensed matter physics. Recently, the advent of Weyl and Dirac semimetals has brought about an interesting platform for potentially uncovering phases of matter that combine nontrivial band topology and interactions. While electronic instabilities of such semimetals at strong magnetic fields have been explored theoretically and experimentally, the role of electron-phonon interactions therein has been largely neglected. In this paper, we study the interplay of electron-electron and electron-phonon interactions in a minimal two-node model of Weyl semimetal. Using a Kadanoff-Wilson renormalization group approach, we analyze lattice (Peierls) instabilities emerging from chiral and nonchiral Landau levels as a function of the magnetic field. We consider both the adiabatic and the nonadiabatic phonon regimes, in the presence or in the absence of improper symmetries that relate Weyl nodes of opposite chirality. We find that (i) the Cooper channel, often neglected in recent studies, can prevent purely electronic instabilities while enabling lattice instabilities that are not Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer-like; (ii) breaking the improper symmetry that relates the two Weyl nodes suppresses the Cooper channel, thereby increasing the critical temperature for the lattice instability; (iii) in the adiabatic phonon regime, lattice instabilities can preempt purely electronic instabilities; (iv) pseudoscalar phonons are more prone to undergo a Peierls instability than scalar phonons. In short, our study emphasizes the importance of taking electron-phonon interactions into account for a complete understanding of interacting phases of matter in Dirac and Weyl semimetals at high magnetic fields.

Spin density wave order in interacting type-I and type-II Weyl semimetals

Weyl semimetals, featuring massless linearly dispersing chiral fermions in three dimensions, provide an excellent platform for studying the interplay of electronic interactions and topology, and exploring new correlated states of matter. Here, we examine the effect of a local repulsive interaction on an inversion-symmetry breaking Weyl semimetal model, using cluster dynamical mean field theory and variational cluster approximation methods. Our analysis reveals a continuous transition from the gapless Weyl semimetal phase to a gapped spin density wave ordered phase at a critical value of the interaction, which is determined by the band structure parameters. Further, we introduce a finite tilt in the linear dispersion and examine the corresponding behavior for a type-II Weyl semimetal model, where the critical interaction strength is found to be significantly diminished, indicating a greater susceptibility towards interactions. The behavior of different physical quantities, such as the double occupancy, the spectral function and the Berry curvature associated with the Weyl nodes are obtained in both the semimetallic and the magnetically ordered states. Finally, we provide an interaction-induced phase diagram for the Weyl semimetal model, as a function of the tilt parameter.

Magnetic anisotropy of the alkali iridate Na$_{2}$IrO$_{3}$ at high magnetic fields: evidence for strong ferromagnetic Kitaev correlations

The magnetic field response of the Mott-insulating honeycomb iridate Na$_{2}$IrO$_{3}$ is investigated using torque magnetometry measurements in magnetic fields up to 60 tesla. A peak-dip structure is observed in the torque response at magnetic fields corresponding to an energy scale close to the zigzag ordering ($\approx 15~K$) temperature. Using exact diagonalization calculations, we show that such a distinctive signature in the torque response constrains the effective spin models for these classes of Kitaev materials to ones with dominant ferromagnetic Kitaev interactions, while alternative models with dominant antiferromagnetic Kitaev interactions are excluded. We further show that at high magnetic fields, long range spin correlation functions decay rapidly, signaling a transition to a long-sought-after field-induced quantum spin liquid beyond the peak-dip structure. Kitaev systems are thus revealed to be excellent candidates for field-induced quantum spin liquids, similar physics having been suggested in another Kitaev material $α-$RuCl$_{3}$.

Competing effects of Hund's splitting and symmetry-breaking perturbations on electronic order in Pb$_{1-x}$Sn$_{x}$Te

We study the effect of a uniform external magnetization on p-wave superconductivity on the (001) surface of the crystalline topological insulator(TCI) Pb$_{1-x}$Sn$_{x}$Te. It was shown by us in an earlier work that a chiral p-wave finite momentum pairing (FFLO) state can be stabilized in this system in the presence of weak repulsive interparticle interactions. In particular, the superconducting instability is very sensitive to the Hund's interaction in the multiorbital TCI, and no instabilities are found to be possible for the "wrong" sign of the Hund's splitting. Here we show that for a finite Hund's splitting of interactions, a significant value of the external magnetization is needed to degrade the surface superconductivity, while in the absence of the Hund's interaction, an arbitrarily small external magnetization can destroy the superconductivity. This implies that multiorbital effects in this system play an important role in stabilizing electronic order on the surface.
