Neutrino absorption by W production in the presence of a magnetic field

In this work we calculate the decay rate of the electron type neutrinos into $W$ bosons and electrons in presence of an external uniform magnetic field. The decay rate is calculated from the imaginary part of the $W$ exchange neutrino self-energy diagram but in the weak field limit and compare our result with the existing one.

Symmetry, winding number and topological charge of vortex solitons in discrete-symmetry media

We determine the functional behavior near the discrete rotational symmetry axis of discrete vortices of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation. We show that these solutions present a central phase singularity whose charge is restricted by symmetry arguments. Consequently, we demonstrate that the existence of high-charged discrete vortices is related to the presence of other off-axis phase singularities, whose positions and charges are also restricted by symmetry arguments. To illustrate our theoretical results, we offer two numerical examples of high-charged discrete vortices in photonic crystal fibers showing hexagonal discrete rotational invariance.

The neutrino self-energy in a magnetized medium

In this work we calculate the neutrino self-energy in presence of a magnetized medium. The magnetized medium consists of electrons, positrons, neutrinos and a uniform classical magnetic field. The calculation is done assuming the background magnetic field is weak compared to the $W$-Boson mass squared, as a consequence of which only linear order corrections in the field are included in the $W$ boson propagator. The electron propagator consists all order corrections in the background field. Although the neutrino self-energy in a magnetized medium in various limiting cases has been calculated previously in this article we produce the most general expression of the self-energy in absence of the Landau quantization of the charged gauge fields. We calculate the effect of the Landau quantization of the charged leptons on the neutrino self-energy in the general case. Our calculation is specifically suited for situations where the background plasma may be CP symmetric.

The Neutron as an Alternative Explanation for the Trans GZK Cosmic Rays

We consider the possibility that the particles in the Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays arriving to Earth might be neutrons instead of protons. We stress that in such case the argument for the GZK cutoff is weaker and that it is conceivable that neutrons would not be affected by it. This scenario would require the neutron to start with an energy larger than the observed one, in order to be able to travel the distances involved, within its proper life-time. It must then loose most of the extra energy through interaction with the galactic dark matter or some other matter in the intergalactic medium.

Higher order correction to the neutrino self-energy in a medium and its astrophysical applications

We have calculated the 1/M^4 (M the vector boson mass) order correction to the neutrino self-energy in a medium. The possible application of this higher order contribution to the neutrino effective potential is considered in the context of the Early Universe hot plasma and of the cosmological Gamma Ray Burst fireball. We found that, depending on the medium parameters and on the neutrino properties (mixing angle and mass square difference) the resonant oscillation of active to active neutrinos is possible.

Multi-GeV neutrinos due to neutro anti-neutron oscillation in Gamma-Ray Burst Fireballs

The long and short gamma-ray bursts are believed to be produced due to collapse of massive stars and merger of compact binaries respectively. All these objects are rich in neutron and the jet outflow from these objects must have a neutron component in it. By postulating the neutron anti-neutron oscillation in the gamma-ray burst fireball, we show that, 19-38 GeV neutrinos and anti-neutrinos can be produced due to annihilation of anti-neutrons with the background neutrons. These neutrinos and anti-neutrinos will be produced before the 5-10 GeV neutrinos due to dynamical decoupling of neutrons from the rest of the fireball. Observation of these neutrinos will shed more light on the nature of the GRB progenitors and also be a unique signature of physics beyond the standard model. A possible way of detecting these neutrinos in future is also discussed.

Quantum Mechanics and the Weak Equivalence Principle

We use the Feynman path integral approach to nonrelativistic quantum mechanics twofold. First, we derive the lagrangian for a spinless particle moving in a uniformly but not necessarily constantly accelerated reference frame; then, applying the strong equivalence principle (SEP) we obtain the Schroedinger equation for a particle in an inertial frame and in the presence of a uniform and constant gravity field. Second, using the associated Feynman propagator, we propagate an initial gaussian wave packet, with the final wave function and probability density depending on the ratio m/hbar, where m is the inertial mass of the particle, thus exhibiting the fact that the weak equivalence principle (WEP) is violated by quantum mechanics. Although due to rapid oscillations the wave function does not exist in the classical limit, the probability density is well defined and mass independent when hbar goes to 0, showing the recovery of the WEP. Finally, at the quantum level, a heavier particle does not necessarily falls faster than a lighter one; this depends on the relations between the initial and final common positions and times of the particles.

Electromagnetic effects of neutrinos in an electron gas

We study the electromagnetic properties of a system that consists of an electron background and a neutrino gas that may be moving or at rest, as a whole, relative to the background. The photon self-energy for this system is characterized by the usual transverse and longitudinal polarization functions, and two additional ones which are the focus of our calculations, that give rise to birefringence and anisotropic effects in the photon dispersion relations. Expressions for them are obtained, which depend on the neutrino number densities and involve momentum integrals over the electron distribution functions, and are valid for any value of the photon momentum and general conditions of the electron gas. Those expressions are evaluated explicitly for several special cases and approximations which are generally useful in astrophysical and cosmological settings. Besides studying the photon dispersion relations, we consider the macroscopic electrodynamic equations for this system, which involve the standard dielectric and permeability constants plus two additional ones related to the photon self-energy functions. As an illustration, the equations are used to discuss the evolution of a magnetic field perturbation in such a medium. This particular phenomena has also been considered in a recent work by Semikoz and Sokoloff as a mechanism for the generation of large-scale magnetic fields in the Early Universe as a consequence of the neutrino-plasma interactions, and allows us to establish contact with a specific application in a well defined context, with a broader scope and from a very different point of view.

Can there be neutrino oscillation in Gamma-Ray Bursts fireball ?

The central engine which powers the Gamma-Ray Burst (GRB) fireball, produces neutrinos in the energy range of about 5-20 MeV. Fractions of these neutrinos may propagate through the fireball which is far away from the central engine. We have studied the propagation of these neutrinos through the fireball which is contaminated by baryons and have shown that, resonant conversion of neutrinos are possible for the oscillations of nu_e to nu_{mu,tau}, nu_e to nu_s and anti-nu_(mu,tou) to anti-nu_s if the neutrino mass square difference and mixing angle are in the atmospheric and/or LSND range. On the other hand it is probably difficult for neutrinos to have resonant oscillation if the neutrino parameters are in the solar neutrino range. From the resonance condition we have estimated the fireball temperature and the baryon load in it.

Effective potential at finite temperature in a constant magnetic field I: Ring diagrams in a scalar theory

We study symmetry restoration at finite temperature in the theory of a charged scalar field interacting with a constant, external magnetic field. We compute the finite temperature effective potential including the contribution from ring diagrams. We show that in the weak field case, the presence of the field produces a stronger first order phase transition and that the temperature for the onset of the transition is lower, as compared to the case without magnetic field.

Chiral fermion mass and dispersion relations at finite temperature in the presence of hypermagnetic fields

We study the modifications to the real part of the thermal self-energy for chiral fermions in the presence of a constant external hypermagnetic field. We compute the dispersion relation for fermions occupying a given Landau level to first order in g'^2, g^2 and g_phi^2 and to all orders in g'B, where g' and g are the U(1)_Y and SU(2)_L couplings of the standard model, respectively, g_phi is the fermion Yukawa coupling, and B is the hypermagnetic field strength. We show that in the limit where the temperature is large compared to sqrt{g'B}, left- and right-handed modes acquire finite and different B-dependent masses due to the chiral nature of their coupling with the external field. Given the current bounds on the strength of primordial magnetic fields, we argue that the above is the relevant scenario to study the effects of magnetic fields on the propagation of fermions prior and during the electroweak phase transition.

Field theory of the photon self-energy in a medium with a magnetic field and the Faraday effect

A convenient and general decomposition of the photon self-energy in a magnetized, but otherwise isotropic, medium is given in terms of the minimal set of tensors consistent with the transversality condition. As we show, the self-energy in such a medium is completely parametrized in terms of nine independent form factors, and they reduce to three in the long wavelength limit. We consider in detail an electron gas with a background magnetic field, and using finite temperature field theory methods, we obtain the one-loop formulas for the form factors, which are exact to all orders in the magnetic field. Explicit results are derived for a variety of physical conditions. In the appropriate limits, we recover the well-known semi-classical results for the photon dispersion relations and the Faraday effect. In more general cases, where the semi-classical treatment or the linear approximation (weak field limit) are not applicable, our formulas provide a consistent and systematic way for computing the self-energy form factors and, from them, the photon dispersion relations.

Pion propagation in the linear sigma model at finite temperature

We construct effective one-loop vertices and propagators in the linear sigma model at finite temperature, satisfying the chiral Ward identities and thus respecting chiral symmetry, treating the pion momentum, pion mass and temperature as small compared to the sigma mass. We use these objects to compute the two-loop pion self-energy. We find that the perturbative behavior of physical quantities, such as the temperature dependence of the pion mass, is well defined in this kinematical regime in terms of the parameter m_pi^2/4pi^2f_pi^2 and show that an expansion in terms of this reproduces the dispersion curve obtained by means of chiral perturbation theory at leading order. The temperature dependence of the pion mass is such that the first and second order corrections in the above parameter have the same sign. We also study pion damping both in the elastic and inelastic channels to this order and compute the mean free path and mean collision time for a pion traveling in the medium before forming a sigma resonance and find a very good agreement with the result from chiral perturbation theory when using a value for the sigma mass of 600 MeV.

Pion dispersion relation at finite temperature in the linear sigma model from chiral Ward identities

We develop one-loop effective vertices and propagators in the linear sigma model at finite temperature satisfying the chiral Ward identities. We use these in turn to compute the pion dispersion relation in a pion medium for small momentum and temperatures on the order of the pion mass at next to leading order in the parameter m_pi^2/4pi^2f_pi^2 and to zeroth order in the parameter (m_pi/m_sigma)^2. We show that this expansion reproduces the result obtained from chiral perturbation theory at leading order. The main effect is a perturbative, temperature-dependent increase of the pion mass. We find no qualitative changes in the pion dispersion curve with respect to the leading order behavior in this kinematical regime.

Effect of random magnetic field on active-sterile neutrino conversion in the supernova core

The active-sterile neutrino conversion is studied for neutrino propagating in the axial potential generated by magnetised electron plasma in the supernova medium. We consider the effect of random magnetic field $B_{rms}$ on the average neutrino conversion probability. We obtained the constraint on $Δm^2$ and $\sin^2 2θ$ for different strength of the random magnetic fields, by considering the positive definiteness of the average neutrino conversion probability inside the supernova core. Our calculation shows that, $B_{rms}\le 0.63\times 10^{14}$ Gauss is preferable so that small values of $Δm^2$ can not be excluded.

Axial Vector Coupling Constant in Chiral Colour Dielectric Model

The axial vector coupling constants of the $β$ decay processes of neutron and hyperon are calculated in SU(3) chiral colour dielectric model (CCDM). Using these axial coupling constants of neutron and hyperon, in CCDM we calculate the integrals of the spin dependent structure functions for proton and neutron. Our result is similar to the results obtained by MIT bag and Cloudy bag models.
