Toward Holography on Biregular Trees

We study scalar field theory on biregular trees, as a new model for discrete holography. Biregular trees are discrete symmetric spaces associated with the bulk isometry group SU(3) over the unramified quadratic extension of a nonarchimedean field. The bulk-to-bulk and bulk-to-boundary propagators exhibit distinct features absent on the regular tree or continuum AdS spaces, arising from the semihomogeneous nature of the bulk space. We compute the two- and three-point correlators of the putative boundary dual. The three-point correlator exhibits a nontrivial "tensor structure" via dependence on the homogeneity degree of a unique bulk point specified in terms of boundary insertion points. The computed OPE coefficients show dependence on zeta functions associated with the unramified quadratic extension of a nonarchimedean field. This work initiates the formulation of holography on a family of discrete holographic spaces that exhibit features of both flat space and negatively curved space.

One- and two-dimensional higher-point conformal blocks as free-particle wavefunctions in AdS$_3^{\otimes m}$

We establish that all of the one- and two-dimensional global conformal blocks are, up to some choice of prefactor, free-particle wavefunctions in tensor products of AdS$_3$ or limits thereof. Our first core observation is that the six-point comb-channel conformal blocks correspond to free-particle wavefunctions on an AdS$_3$ constructed directly in cross-ratio space. This construction generalizes to blocks for a special class of diagrams, which are determined as free-particle wavefunctions in tensor products of AdS$_3$. Conformal blocks for all the remaining topologies are obtained as limits of the free wavefunctions mentioned above. Our results show directly that the integrable models associated with all one- and two-dimensional conformal blocks can be seen as limits of free theory, and manifest a relation between AdS and CFT kinematics that lies outside of the standard AdS/CFT dictionary. We complete the discussion by providing explicit Feynman-like rules that can be used to work out blocks for all topologies, as well as a Mathematica notebook that allows simple computation of Casimir equations and series expansions for blocks, by requiring just an OPE diagram as input.

Feynman Rules for Scalar Conformal Blocks

We complete the proof of "Feynman rules" for constructing $M$-point conformal blocks with external and internal scalars in any topology for arbitrary $M$ in any spacetime dimension by combining the rules for the blocks (based on their Witten diagram interpretation) with the rules for the construction of conformal cross ratios (based on OPE flow diagrams). The full set of Feynman rules leads to blocks as power series of the hypergeometric type in the conformal cross ratios. We then provide a proof by recursion of the Feynman rules which relies heavily on the first Barnes lemma and the decomposition of the topology of interest in comb-like structures. Finally, we provide a nine-point example to illustrate the rules.

Holographic tensor networks from hyperbolic buildings

We introduce a unifying framework for the construction of holographic tensor networks, based on the theory of hyperbolic buildings. The underlying dualities relate a bulk space to a boundary which can be homeomorphic to a sphere, but also to more general spaces like a Menger sponge type fractal. In this general setting, we give a precise construction of a large family of bulk regions that satisfy complementary recovery. For these regions, our networks obey a Ryu--Takayanagi formula. The areas of Ryu--Takayanagi surfaces are controlled by the Hausdorff dimension of the boundary, and consistently generalize the behavior of holographic entanglement entropy in integer dimensions to the non-integer case. Our construction recovers HaPPY--like codes in all dimensions, and generalizes the geometry of Bruhat--Tits trees. It also provides examples of infinite-dimensional nets of holographic conditional expectations, and opens a path towards the study of conformal field theory and holography on fractal spaces.

Dimensional reduction of higher-point conformal blocks

Recently, with the help of Parisi-Sourlas supersymmetry an intriguing relation was found expressing the four-point scalar conformal block of a (d-2)-dimensional CFT in terms of a five-term linear combination of blocks of a d-dimensional CFT, with constant coefficients. We extend this dimensional reduction relation to all higher-point scalar conformal blocks of arbitrary topology restricted to scalar exchanges. We show that the constant coefficients appearing in the finite term higher-point dimensional reduction obey an interesting factorization property allowing them to be determined in terms of certain graphical Feynman-like rules and the associated finite set of vertex and edge factors. Notably, these rules can be fully determined by considering the explicit power-series representation of just three particular conformal blocks: the four-point block, the five-point block and the six-point block of the so-called OPE/snowflake topology. In principle, this method can be applied to obtain the arbitrary-point dimensional reduction of conformal blocks with spinning exchanges as well. We also show how to systematically extend the dimensional reduction relation of conformal partial waves to higher-points.

Towards Feynman rules for conformal blocks

We conjecture a simple set of "Feynman rules" for constructing $n$-point global conformal blocks in any channel in $d$ spacetime dimensions, for external and exchanged scalar operators for arbitrary $n$ and $d$. The vertex factors are given in terms of Lauricella hypergeometric functions of one, two or three variables, and the Feynman rules furnish an explicit power-series expansion in powers of cross-ratios. These rules are conjectured based on previously known results in the literature, which include four-, five- and six-point examples as well as the $n$-point comb channel blocks. We prove these rules for all previously known cases, as well as for a seven-point block in a new topology and the even-point blocks in the "OPE channel." The proof relies on holographic methods, notably the Feynman rules for Mellin amplitudes of tree-level AdS diagrams in a scalar effective field theory, and is easily applicable to any particular choice of a conformal block.

A multipoint conformal block chain in $d$ dimensions

Conformal blocks play a central role in CFTs as the basic, theory-independent building blocks. However, only limited results are available concerning multipoint blocks associated with the global conformal group. In this paper, we systematically work out the $d$-dimensional $n$-point global conformal blocks (for arbitrary $d$ and $n$) for external and exchanged scalar operators in the so-called comb channel. We use kinematic aspects of holography and previously worked out higher-point AdS propagator identities to first obtain the geodesic diagram representation for the $(n+2)$-point block. Subsequently, upon taking a particular double-OPE limit, we obtain an explicit power series expansion for the $n$-point block expressed in terms of powers of conformal cross-ratios. Interestingly, the expansion coefficient is written entirely in terms of Pochhammer symbols and $(n-4)$ factors of the generalized hypergeometric function ${}_3F_2$, for which we provide a holographic explanation. This generalizes the results previously obtained in the literature for $n=4, 5$. We verify the results explicitly in embedding space using conformal Casimir equations.

Propagator identities, holographic conformal blocks, and higher-point AdS diagrams

Conformal blocks are the fundamental, theory-independent building blocks in any CFT, so it is important to understand their holographic representation in the context of AdS/CFT. We describe how to systematically extract the holographic objects which compute higher-point global (scalar) conformal blocks in arbitrary spacetime dimensions, extending the result for the four-point block, known in the literature as a geodesic Witten diagram, to five- and six-point blocks. The main new tools which allow us to obtain such representations are various higher-point propagator identities, which can be interpreted as generalizations of the well-known flat space star-triangle identity, and which compute integrals over products of three bulk-to-bulk and/or bulk-to-boundary propagators in negatively curved spacetime. Using the holographic representation of the higher-point conformal blocks and higher-point propagator identities, we develop geodesic diagram techniques to obtain the explicit direct-channel conformal block decomposition of a broad class of higher-point AdS diagrams in a scalar effective bulk theory, with closed-form expressions for the decomposition coefficients. These methods require only certain elementary manipulations and no bulk integration, and furthermore provide quite trivially a simple algebraic origin of the logarithmic singularities of higher-point tree-level AdS diagrams. We also provide a more compact repackaging in terms of the spectral decomposition of the same diagrams, as well as an independent discussion on the closely related but computationally simpler framework over $p$-adics which admits comparable statements for all previously mentioned results.

Holographic dual of the five-point conformal block

We present the holographic object which computes the five-point global conformal block in arbitrary dimensions for external and exchanged scalar operators. This object is interpreted as a weighted sum over infinitely many five-point geodesic bulk diagrams. These five-point geodesic bulk diagrams provide a generalization of their previously studied four-point counterparts. We prove our claim by showing that the aforementioned sum over geodesic bulk diagrams is the appropriate eigenfunction of the conformal Casimir operator with the right boundary conditions. This result rests on crucial inspiration from a much simpler $p$-adic version of the problem set up on the Bruhat-Tits tree.

$p$-adic Mellin Amplitudes

In this paper, we propose a $p$-adic analog of Mellin amplitudes for scalar operators, and present the computation of the general contact amplitude as well as arbitrary-point tree-level amplitudes for bulk diagrams involving up to three internal lines, and along the way obtain the $p$-adic version of the split representation formula. These amplitudes share noteworthy similarities with the usual (real) Mellin amplitudes for scalars, but are also significantly simpler, admitting closed-form expressions where none are available over the reals. The dramatic simplicity can be attributed to the absence of descendant fields in the $p$-adic formulation.

Recursion Relations in $p$-adic Mellin Space

In this work, we formulate a set of rules for writing down $p$-adic Mellin amplitudes at tree-level. The rules lead to closed-form expressions for Mellin amplitudes for arbitrary scalar bulk diagrams. The prescription is recursive in nature, with two different physical interpretations: one as a recursion on the number of internal lines in the diagram, and the other as reminiscent of on-shell BCFW recursion for flat-space amplitudes, especially when viewed in auxiliary momentum space. The prescriptions are proven in full generality, and their close connection with Feynman rules for real Mellin amplitudes is explained. We also show that the integrands in the Mellin-Barnes representation of both real and $p$-adic Mellin amplitudes, the so-called pre-amplitudes, can be constructed according to virtually identical rules, and that these pre-amplitudes themselves may be re-expressed as products of particular Mellin amplitudes with complexified conformal dimensions.

Nonarchimedean Holographic Entropy from Networks of Perfect Tensors

We consider a class of holographic quantum error-correcting codes, built from perfect tensors in network configurations dual to Bruhat-Tits trees and their quotients by Schottky groups corresponding to BTZ black holes. The resulting holographic states can be constructed in the limit of infinite network size. We obtain a $p$-adic version of entropy which obeys a Ryu-Takayanagi like formula for bipartite entanglement of connected or disconnected regions, in both genus-zero and genus-one $p$-adic backgrounds, along with a Bekenstein-Hawking-type formula for black hole entropy. We prove entropy inequalities obeyed by such tensor networks, such as subadditivity, strong subadditivity, and monogamy of mutual information (which is always saturated). In addition, we construct infinite classes of perfect tensors directly from semiclassical states in phase spaces over finite fields, generalizing the CRSS algorithm, and give Hamiltonians exhibiting these as vacua.

Signs of the time: Melonic theories over diverse number systems

Melonic field theories are defined over the $p$-adic numbers with the help of a sign character. Our construction works over the reals as well as the $p$-adics, and it includes the fermionic and bosonic Klebanov-Tarnopolsky models as special cases; depending on the sign character, the symmetry group of the field theory can be either orthogonal or symplectic. Analysis of the Schwinger-Dyson equation for the two-point function in the leading melonic limit shows that power law scaling behavior in the infrared arises for fermionic theories when the sign character is non-trivial, and for bosonic theories when the sign character is trivial. In certain cases, the Schwinger-Dyson equation can be solved exactly using a quartic polynomial equation, and the solution interpolates between the ultraviolet scaling controlled by the spectral parameter and the universal infrared scaling. As a by-product of our analysis, we see that melonic field theories defined over the real numbers can be modified by replacing the time derivative by a bilocal kinetic term with a continuously variable spectral parameter. The infrared scaling of the resulting two-point function is universal, independent of the spectral parameter of the ultraviolet theory.

O(N) and O(N) and O(N)

Three related analyses of $ϕ^4$ theory with $O(N)$ symmetry are presented. In the first, we review the $O(N)$ model over the $p$-adic numbers and the discrete renormalization group transformations which can be understood as spin blocking in an ultrametric context. We demonstrate the existence of a Wilson-Fisher fixed point using an $ε$ expansion, and we show how to obtain leading order results for the anomalous dimensions of low dimension operators near the fixed point. Along the way, we note an important aspect of ultrametric field theories, which is a non-renormalization theorem for kinetic terms. In the second analysis, we employ large $N$ methods to establish formulas for anomalous dimensions which are valid equally for field theories over the $p$-adic numbers and field theories on $\mathbb{R}^n$. Results for anomalous dimensions agree between the first and second analyses when they can be meaningfully compared. In the third analysis, we consider higher derivative versions of the $O(N)$ model on $\mathbb{R}^n$, the simplest of which has been studied in connection with spatially modulated phases. Our general formula for anomalous dimensions can still be applied. Analogies with two-derivative theories hint at the existence of some interesting unconventional field theories in four real Euclidean dimensions.

Geodesic bulk diagrams on the Bruhat-Tits tree

Geodesic bulk diagrams were recently shown to be the geometric objects which compute global conformal blocks. We show that this duality continues to hold in $p$-adic AdS/CFT, where the bulk is replaced by the Bruhat-Tits tree, an infinite regular graph with no cycles, and the boundary is described by $p$-adic numbers, rather than reals. We apply the duality to evaluate the four-point function of scalar operators of generic dimensions using tree-level bulk diagrams. Relative to standard results from the literature, we find intriguing similarities as well as significant simplifications. Notably, all derivatives disappear in the conformal block decomposition of the four-point function. On the other hand, numerical coefficients in the four-point function as well as the structure constants take surprisingly universal forms, applicable to both the reals and the $p$-adics when expressed in terms of local zeta functions. Finally, we present a minimal bulk action with nearest neighbor interactions on the Bruhat-Tits tree, which reproduces the two-, three-, and four-point functions of a free boundary theory.

Edge length dynamics on graphs with applications to $p$-adic AdS/CFT

We formulate a Euclidean theory of edge length dynamics based on a notion of Ricci curvature on graphs with variable edge lengths. In order to write an explicit form for the discrete analog of the Einstein-Hilbert action, we require that the graph should either be a tree or that all its cycles should be sufficiently long. The infinite regular tree with all edge lengths equal is an example of a graph with constant negative curvature, providing a connection with $p$-adic AdS/CFT, where such a tree takes the place of anti-de Sitter space. We compute simple correlators of the operator holographically dual to edge length fluctuations. This operator has dimension equal to the dimension of the boundary, and it has some features in common with the stress tensor.

$p$-adic AdS/CFT

We construct a $p$-adic analog to AdS/CFT, where an unramified extension of the $p$-adic numbers replaces Euclidean space as the boundary and a version of the Bruhat-Tits tree replaces the bulk. Correlation functions are computed in the simple case of a single massive scalar in the bulk, with results that are strikingly similar to ordinary holographic correlation functions when expressed in terms of local zeta functions. We give some brief discussion of the geometry of $p$-adic chordal distance and of Wilson loops. Our presentation includes an introduction to $p$-adic numbers.

Segmented strings and the McMillan map

We present new exact solutions describing motions of closed segmented strings in $AdS_3$ in terms of elliptic functions. The existence of analytic expressions is due to the integrability of the classical equations of motion, which in our examples reduce to instances of the McMillan map. We also obtain a discrete evolution rule for the motion in $AdS_3$ of arbitrary bound states of fundamental strings and D1-branes in the test approximation.
