How Self-Supervised Learning Can be Used for Fine-Grained Head Pose Estimation?

The cost of head pose labeling is the main challenge of improving the fine-grained Head Pose Estimation (HPE). Although Self-Supervised Learning (SSL) can be a solution to the lack of huge amounts of labeled data, its efficacy for fine-grained HPE is not yet fully explored. This study aims to assess the usage of SSL in fine-grained HPE based on two scenarios: (1) using SSL for weights pre-training procedure, and (2) leveraging auxiliary SSL losses besides HPE. We design a Hybrid Multi-Task Learning (HMTL) architecture based on the ResNet50 backbone in which both strategies are applied. Our experimental results reveal that the combination of both scenarios is the best for HPE. Together, the average error rate is reduced up to 23.1% for AFLW2000 and 14.2% for BIWI benchmark compared to the baseline. Moreover, it is found that some SSL methods are more suitable for transfer learning, while others may be effective when they are considered as auxiliary tasks incorporated into supervised learning. Finally, it is shown that by using the proposed HMTL architecture, the average error is reduced with different types of initial weights: random, ImageNet and SSL pre-trained weights.

Identifying Benefits and risks associated with utilizing cloud computing

Cloud computing is an emerging computing model where IT and computing operations are delivered as services in highly scalable and cost effective manner. Recently, embarking this new model in business has become popular. Companies in diverse sectors intend to leverage cloud computing architecture, platforms and applications in order to gain higher competitive advantages. Likewise other models, cloud computing brought advantages to attract business but meanwhile fostering cloud has led to some risks, which can cause major impacts if business does not plan for mitigation. This paper surveys the advantages of cloud computing and in contrast the risks associated using them. Finally we conclude that a well-defined risk management program that focused on cloud computing is an essential part of gaining value from benefits of cloud computing.

Enhancing congestion control to address link failure loss over mobile ad-hoc network

Standard congestion control cannot detect link failure losses which occur due to mobility and power scarcity in multi-hop Ad-Hoc network (MANET). Moreover, successive executions of Back-off algorithm deficiently grow Retransmission Timeout (RTO) exponentially for new route. The importance of detecting and responding link failure losses is to prevent sender from remaining idle unnecessarily and manage number of packet retransmission overhead. In contrast to Cross-layer approaches which require feedback information from lower layers, this paper operates purely in Transport layer. This paper explores an end-to-end threshold-based algorithm which enhances congestion control to address link failure loss in MANET. It consists of two phases. First, threshold-based loss classification algorithm distinguishes losses due to link failure by estimating queue usage based on Relative One-way Trip Time (ROTT). Second phase adjusts RTO for new route by comparing capabilities of new route to the broken route using available information in Transport layer such as ROTT and number of hops.
