One more proof of the Erdős--Turán inequality, and an error estimate in Wigner's law

We prove the Erdos-Turan equidistribution inequality, using a construction due to Chebyshev, Markov, and Stieltjes. The method is applicable in a more general setting. As an example, we state another inequality that can be proved using this method. The inequality can be used to get an error estimate in Wigner's law which is sharp near the edge.

An isoperimetric inequality on the $\ell_p$ balls

The normalised volume measure on the $\ell_p^n$ unit ball ($1\leq p\leq 2$) satisfies the following isoperimetric inequality: the boundary measure of a set of measure $a$ is at least $cn^{1/p}\tilde{a}\log^{1-1/p}(1/\tilde{a})$, where $\tilde{a}=\min(a,1-a)$.

An isoperimetric inequality for uniformly log-concave measures and uniformly convex bodies

We prove an isoperimetric inequality for the uniform measure on a uniformly convex body and for a class of uniformly log-concave measures (that we introduce). These inequalities imply (up to universal constants) the log-Sobolev inequalities proved by Bobkov--Ledoux as well as the isoperimetric inequalities due to Bakry-Ledoux and Bobkov--Zegarlinski. We also recover a concentration inequality for uniformly convex bodies, similar to that proved by Gromov--Milman.

Random matrices, non-backtracking walks, and orthogonal polynomials

Several well-known results from the random matrix theory, such as Wigner's law and the Marchenko--Pastur law, can be interpreted (and proved) in terms of non-backtracking walks on a certain graph. Orthogonal polynomials with respect to the limiting spectral measure play a role in this approach.

An extension of a Bourgain--Lindenstrauss--Milman inequality

Let || . || be a norm on R^n. Averaging || (\eps_1 x_1, ..., \eps_n x_n) || over all the 2^n choices of \eps = (\eps_1, ..., \eps_n) in {-1, +1}^n, we obtain an expression ||| . ||| which is an unconditional norm on R^n. Bourgain, Lindenstrauss and Milman showed that, for a certain (large) constant η> 1, one may average over (ηn) (random) choices of \eps and obtain a norm that is isomorphic to ||| . |||. We show that this is the case for any η> 1.

Non-backtracking random walks mix faster

We compute the mixing rate of a non-backtracking random walk on a regular expander. Using some properties of Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind, we show that this rate may be up to twice as fast as the mixing rate of the simple random walk. The closer the expander is to a Ramanujan graph, the higher the ratio between the above two mixing rates is. As an application, we show that if $G$ is a high-girth regular expander on $n$ vertices, then a typical non-backtracking random walk of length $n$ on $G$ does not visit a vertex more than $(1+o(1))\frac{\log n}{\log\log n}$ times, and this result is tight. In this sense, the multi-set of visited vertices is analogous to the result of throwing $n$ balls to $n$ bins uniformly, in contrast to the simple random walk on $G$, which almost surely visits some vertex $Ω(\log n)$ times.

Polynomial bounds for large Bernoulli sections of $\ell_1^N$

We prove a quantitative version of the bound on the smallest singular value of a Bernoulli covariance matrix (due to Bai and Yin). Then we use this bound, together with several recent developments, to show that the distance from a random (1-delta) n - dimensional section of ell_1^n, realised as an image of a sign matrix, to an Euclidean ball is polynomial in 1/delta (and independent of n), with high probability.

Tail-sensitive Gaussian asymptotics for marginals of concentrated measures in high dimension

If the Euclidean norm is strongly concentrated with respect to a measure, the average distribution of an average marginal of this measure has Gaussian asymptotics that captures tail behaviour. If the marginals of the measure have exponential moments, Gaussian asymptotics for the distribution of the average marginal implies Gaussian asymptotics for the distribution of most individual marginals. We show applications to measures of geometric origin.
