Integration of diamond nanobeams with SnVs on Al2O3 waveguides for scalable quantum photonic chip application

Tin vacancy (SnV) centers in diamond are promising solid state qubits for integrated quantum photonics. Here, we fabricate and characterize a diamond on Al2O3 dual taper waveguide structure containing SnV centers, demonstrating optical coupling between the diamond nanobeam and the underlying Al2O3 waveguide. The devices are realized using a bilayer fabrication approach compatible with wafer scale lithography. Clear guided SnV- emission is observed in all optically active devices, indicating effective optical coupling in the integrated structure. These results demonstrate a scalable fabrication approach toward integrating diamond color centers with photonic waveguides.

Efficient light couplers to topological slow light waveguides in valley photonic crystals

We numerically and experimentally demonstrate efficient light couplers between topological slow light waveguides in valley photonic crystals (VPhCs) and wire waveguides. By numerical simulations, we obtained a high coupling efficiency of -0.84 dB/coupler on average in the slow light regime of a group index ng = 10 - 30. Experimentally, we fabricated the couplers in a Si slab and measured the transmitted power of the devices. We realized a high coupling efficiency of approximately -1.2 dB/coupler in the slow light region of ng = 10 - 30, which is close to the result from the numerical simulations. These demonstrations will lay the groundwork for low-loss photonic integrated circuits using topological slow light waveguides.

GaAs valley photonic crystal waveguide with light-emitting InAs quantum dots

We report a valley photonic crystal (VPhC) waveguide in a GaAs slab with InAs quantum dots (QDs) as an internal light source exploited for experimental characterization of the waveguide. A topological interface state formed at the interface between two topologically-distinct VPhCs is used as the waveguide mode. We demonstrate robust propagation for near-infrared light emitted from the QDs even under the presence of sharp bends as a consequence of the topological protection of the guided mode. Our work will be of importance for developing robust photonic integrated circuits with small footprints, as well as for exploring active semiconductor topological photonics.

Lasing oscillation in a three-dimensional photonic crystal nanocavity with a complete bandgap

We demonstrate lasing oscillation in a three-dimensional photonic crystal nanocavity. The laser is realized by coupling a cavity mode, which is localized in a complete photonic bandgap and exhibits the highest quality factor of ~38,500, with high-quality semiconductor quantum dots. We show a systematic change in the laser characteristics, including the threshold and the spontaneous emission coupling factor by controlling the crystal size, which consequently changes the strength of photon confinement in the third dimension. This opens up many interesting possibilities for realizing future ultimate light sources and three-dimensional integrated photonic circuits and for more fundamental studies of physics in the field of cavity quantum electrodynamics.

Investigation of the spectral triplet in strongly coupled quantum dot-nanocavity system

We experimentally investigated the excitation power dependence of a strongly coupled quantum dot (QD)-photonic crystal nanocavity system by photoluminescence (PL) measurements. At a low-excitation power regime, we observed vacuum Rabi doublet emission at QD-cavity resonance condition. With increasing excitation power, in addition to the doublet, a third emission peak appeared. This observed spectral change is unexpected from conventional atomic cavity quantum electrodynamics. The observations can be attributed to featured pumping processes in the semiconductor QD-cavity system.
