Enhancing the three-dimensional electronic structure in 1111-type iron arsenide superconductors by H-substitution

The 1111-type iron arsenide hydride CaFe1-xCoxAsH was synthesized by high-pressure solid-state reaction, and its electronic structure and superconducting properties were investigated. Bulk superconductivity was observed at x = 0.07-0.26. A maximum superconducting critical temperature Tcmax of 23 K was observed at x = 0.07. These values are in agreement with those of CaFe1-xCoxAsF. The calculated Fermi surface of CaFeAsH has a small three-dimensional 3D hole pocket around the Gamma point. This is a result of weak covalent bonding between the As 4p and H 1s orbitals. No such covalency exists in CaFeAsF, because the energy level of the F 2p orbital is sufficiently deep to inhibit overlap with the As 4p orbital. The similar superconducting properties of CaFe1-xCoxAsH and CaFe1-xCoxAsF are explained on the nesting scenario. The small 3D hole pocket of CaFe1-xCoxAsH does not significantly contribute to electron excitation. These findings encourage exploration of hydrogen-containing 1111-type iron-based materials with lower anisotropies and higher Tc applicable to superconducting wires and tapes.

La-substituted CaFeAsH superconductor with Tc = 47 K

La-substituted CaFeAsH,(Ca1-xLax)FeAsH, were synthesized by the solid state reaction at 1173 K under high pressure of 2.5 GPa. The r-T anomaly corresponding to tetragonal to orthorhombic structural transition was suppressed by La-substitution and then the superconductivity was observed at an electron doping content of Ne > 0.05. The maximum onset Tc of 47.4 K was reached for Ne = 0.18, which is significant increase compared to 23 K achieved by direct electron doping to the FeAs-layer via Co-substitution to the Fe-site. This value of Tc value fits well to the phenomenological relation between Tc and the bond angle of As-Fe-As in indirectly electron doped LnFeAsO (Ln = Lanthanide). These results indicate that the electron was doped via the indirect mode through the aliovalent ion substitution to CaH-layer (Ca2+ La3+ + e-).

Controlling Factors of Tc-Dome Structure in 1111-Type Iron Arsenide Superconductors

We investigated the effects of phosphorus substitution on the shape of the Tc(x) dome in 1111-type SmFeAs1-yPyO1-xHx (0 < x < 0.5). Hydride ion substitution of oxide sites (O2- -> H-) exerts a chemical pressure effect, i.e., a structural reduction of the Pn-Fe-Pn angle α (Pn = P, As) and also dopes electrons into the FePn layer to induce superconductivity. Isovalent phosphorus substitution (P3- -> As3-) can induce only a chemical pressure effect, i.e., an increase of α for La-substitution of Sm-sites. As y increases from 0.0 to 0.5, the single Tc dome gradually splits into two domes, similar to those of LaFeAsO1-xHx with a Tc valley at x ~ 0.16. We found that the Tc valley is located around (x, α) ~ (0.16, 113°) for both SmFeAs1-yPyO1-xHx and LaFeAsO1-xHx series, irrespective of changes in the Pn anion and Ln cation species. This result suggests that suppression of Tc leads to the emergence of a Tc valley when both the shape of FePn4 tetrahedra represented by α and electron doping level of x meet the above criterion in 1111 type iron oxypnictide superconductors.

Epitaxial Growth and Electronic Structure of a Layered Zinc Pnictide Semiconductor, beta-BaZn2As2

BaZn2As2 is expected for a good p-type semiconductor and has two crystalline phases of an orthorhombic alpha phase and a higher-symmetry tetragonal beta phase. Here, we report high-quality epitaxial films of the tetragonal beta-BaZn2As2 were grown on single-crystal MgO (001) substrates by a reactive solid-phase epitaxy technique. Out-of-plane and in-plane epitaxial relationships between the film and the substrate were BaZn2As2 (00l)//MgO (001) and BaZn2As2 [200]//MgO [200], respectively. The full-widths at half maximum were 0.082o for a 008 out-of-plane rocking curve and 0.342o for a 200 in-plane rocking curve. A step-and-terrace structure was observed by atomic force microscopy. The band gap of beta-BaZn2As2 was evaluated to be around 0.2 eV, which is much smaller than that of a family compound LaZnOAs (1.5 eV). Density functional theory calculation using the Heyd-Scuseria-Ernzerhof hybrid functionals supports the small band gap.

Switching of intra-orbital spin excitations in electron-doped iron pnictide superconductors

We investigate the doping dependence of the magnetic excitations in two-superconducting-dome-system LaFeAsO1-xDx. Using inelastic neutron scattering, spin fluctuations at different wavenumbers were observed under both superconducting domes around x = 0.1 and 0.4, but vanished at x = 0.2 corresponding to the Tc valley. Theoretical calculations indicate that the characteristic doping dependence of spin fluctuations is rationally explained as a consequence of the switching of the two intra-orbital nestings within Fe-3dYZ, ZX and 3dX2-Y2 by electron doping. The present results imply that the multi-orbital nature plays an important role in the doping and / or material dependence of the Tc of the iron pnictide superconductors.

Robust spin fluctuations and $s\pm$ pairing in the heavily electron doped iron-based superconductors

We theoretically study the spin fluctuation and superconductivity in La1111 and Sm1111 iron-based superconductors for a wide range of electron doping. When we take into account the band structure variation by electron doping, the hole Fermi surface originating from the $d_{X^2-Y^2}$ orbital turns out to be robust against electron doping, and this gives rise to large spin fluctuations and consequently $s\pm$ pairing even in the heavily doped regime. The stable hole Fermi surface is larger for Sm1111 than for La1111, which can be considered as the origin of the apparent difference in the phase diagram.

Superconductivity induced by hydrogen anion substitution in 1111-type iron arsenides

Hydrogen is the simplest bipolar element and its valence state can be controlled from +1 to -1. We synthesized the 1111-type CaFeAsH and LnFeAsO1-xHx (Ln = lanthanide) with the ZrCuSiAs type structure by a high-pressure synthesis method. The position and valence state of the substituted H were determined by neutron diffraction and density functional theory calculations. The close similarity in the structural and electrical properties of CaFeAsH and CaFeAsF indicated the formation of the hydride ion (H-), which is isovalent with the fluoride ion (F-), in the 1111-type iron arsenides. When some of the O2- ions in LnFeAsO are replaced by H-, superconductivity is induced by electron doping to the FeAs-layer to maintain charge neutrality. Since the substitution limit of hydrogen in LnFeAsO (x~0.5) is much higher than that of fluorine (x~0.2), the hydrogen substitution technique provides an effective pathway for high-density electron-doping, making it possible to draw the complete electronic phase diagram of LnFeAsO. The x-T diagrams of LnFeAsO1-xHx (Ln = La, Ce, Sm, Gd) have a wide superconducting (SC) region spanning the range x = 0.04 to 0.4, which is far from the parent antiferromagnetic region near x = 0.0. For Ln=La, another SC dome region was found in the range x = ~ 0.2 to ~0.5 with a maximum Tc = 36 K, in addition to a conventional SC dome located at x ~0.08 with maximum Tc = 29 K. Density functional theory calculations performed for LaFeAsO1-xHx indicated that the newly observed Tc is correlated with the appearance of degeneration of the Fe 3d bands (dxy, dyz and dzx), which is caused not only by regularization of the tetrahedral shape of FeAs4 due to chemical pressure effects but also by selective band occupation with doped electrons. In this article, we review the recent progress of superconductivity in iron (oxy)arsenides and related compounds induced by hydrogen substitution.

Tc Maximum in Solid Solution of Pyrite IrSe2-RhSe2 Induced by Destabilization of Anion Dimers

We have established a well-defined dome shape Tc curve in Ir0.94-xRhxSe2 superconductors. The maximum Tconset of 9.6K was obtained at x=0.36, at which the Se-Se separation in the dimer anion is the longest. Simultaneously, the destabilization of Se-Se dimers accompanied by partial elec-tron-transfer from the Ir/Rh to the chalcogenide ions result-ed in the emergence of optimal Tc.

Superconductivity in defective pyrite-type iridium chalcogenides IrxCh2 (Ch = Se and Te)

We report superconductivity in defective pyrite-type iridium chalcogenides IrxCh2. Maximum values of Tc of 6.4 K for Ir0.91Se2 and 4.7 K for Ir0.93Te2 were observed. It was found that Ir0.75Ch2 is close to the boundary between metallic and insulating states and IrxCh2 systems undergo nonmetal to metal transitions as x increases. On the basis of density functional theory calculations and the observed large variation in the Ch-Ch distance with x, we suggest that Ir0.75Ch2 is the parent compound for the present superconductors.

Hydrogen in layered iron arsenide: indirect electron doping to induce superconductivity

Utilizing the high stability of calcium and rare earth hydrides, CaFeAsF1-xHx (x = 0.0-1.0) and SmFeAsO1-xHx (x = 0.0-0.47) have been first synthesized using high pressure to form hydrogen-substituted 1111 type iron-arsenide superconductors. Neutron diffraction and density functional calculations have demonstrated that the hydrogens are incorporated as H- ions occupying F- sites in the blocking layer of CaFeAsF. The resulting CaFeAsF1-xHx is non-superconducting, whereas SmFeAsO1-xHx is a superconductor, with an optimal Tc = 55 K at x 0.2. It was found that up to 40% of the O2- ions can be replaced by H- ions, with electrons being supplied into the FeAs-layer to maintain neutrality (O2- = H-+ e-). When x exceeded 0.2, Tc was reduced corresponding to an electron over-doped region.

Coexistence of light and heavy carriers associated with superconductivity and anti-ferromagnetism in CeNi0.8Bi2 with a Bi square net

We found that the ZrCuSiAs-type crystal CeNi0.8Bi2 with a layered structure composed of alternate stacking of [CeNixBi(1)]δ+ and Bi(2)δ- exhibits a superconductive transition at ~4 K, which was confirmed by zero resistance and the Meissner effect (shielding volume faction ~100% at 2 K). Heat capacity measurements revealed that the electron mass at the normal state (>5 K) is heavy (γ = 0.4 J mol-1 K-2) and a peak responsible for the anti-ferromagnetic ordering of Ce3+ 4f1 at ~5 K. These results indicate that there are two types of carriers with notable different masses, i.e., a light electron responsible for superconductivity and a heavy electron interacting with the Ce 4f electron. This observation suggests that 6p electrons of Bi(2) forming the square net and electrons in CeNixBi(1) layers primarily correspond to light and heavy electrons, respectively.

High Pressure Synthesis of Indirectly electron-doped 122 Iron Superconductor Sr1-xLaxFe2As2 with a maximum Tc = 22 K

Compounds of Sr1-xLaxFe2As2 were synthesized by solid state reaction at 1273 K, under pressures of 2 or 3 GPa. The Sr1-xLaxFe2As2 phase was dominant up to x = 0.5, and superconductivity was observed at $x \ge 0.2$. A maximum critical temperature Tc of 22 K, and a maximum shielding volume fraction of ~70 % were obtained at x = 0.4. This is the first experimental demonstration of electron-doped superconductivity in 122-type iron pnictides, where electrons were doped through aliovalent substitution at the site of the alkaline earth metal. The optimal Tc was slightly higher than that for the Co-doped (directly electron-doped) samples (19 K), and much lower than that for the hole-doped case (37 K). The bulk superconductivity range was narrower than that for the Co-substituted case, and both ranges were much narrower than that for the hole-doped case. These observations revealed that differences in the electron-doping mode (direct or indirect) did not have a prominent effect on the optimal Tc or superconductivity range, compared with differences in carrier polarity.

Magnetic Lattice Dynamics of the Oxygen-Free FeAs Pnictides: How Sensitive are Phonons to Magnetic Ordering?

To shed light on the role of magnetism on the superconducting mechanism of the oxygen-free FeAs pnictides, we investigate the effect of magnetic ordering on phonon dynamics in the low-temperature orthorhombic parent compounds, which present a spin-density wave. The study covers both the 122 (AFe2As2; A=Ca, Sr, Ba) and 1111 (AFeAsF; A=Ca, Sr) phases. We extend our recent work on the Ca (122 and 1111) and Ba (122) cases by treating computationally and experimentally the 122 and 1111 Sr compounds. The effect of magnetic ordering is investigated through detailed non-magnetic and magnetic lattice dynamical calculations. The comparison of the experimental and calculated phonon spectra shows that the magnetic interactions/ordering have to be included in order to reproduce well the measured density of states. This highlights a spin-correlated phonon behavior which is more pronounced than the apparently weak electron-phonon coupling estimated in these materials. Furthermore, there is no noticeable difference between phonon spectra of the 122 Ba and Sr, whereas there are substantial differences when comparing these to CaFe2As2 originating from different aspects of structure and bonding.

Comparison of crystal structures and effects of Co substitution in a new member of Fe-1111 superconductor family AeFeAsF(Ae = Ca and Sr): a possible candidate for higher Tc superconductor

We refined crystal structures of newly found members of the Fe-1111 superconductor family, CaFe\_{1-x}Co\_{x}AsF and SrFe\_{1-x}Co\_{x}AsF (x = 0, 0.06, 0.12) by powder synchrotron X-ray diffraction analysis. The tetragonal to orthorhombic phase transitions were observed at ~120 K for unsubstituted CaFeAsF and at ~180 K for unsubstituted SrFeAsF, the transition temperatures agreeing with kinks observed in temperature-dependent resistivity curves. Although the transition temperature decreases, the structural phase transitions were observed below 100 K in both samples of x = 0.06, and finally they were suppressed in the doping level of x = 0.12. The refined structures reveal that distortions of the FeAs4 tetrahedron from the regular tetrahedron likely originate from mismatches in atomic radii among the constituent elements. In this system, the enlarged FeAs4 tetrahedron resulting from larger radius of Sr than that of Ca is flattened along a-b plane, whereas the smaller radius of Ca makes the tetrahedron closer to regular one, and their characteristic shapes are further enhanced by Co substitution. These results suggest that the CaFeAsF compound is a promising candidate for higher-Tc superconductor.

Effect of 3d Transition Metal Doping on the Superconductivity in Quaternary Fluoroarsenide CaFeAsF

We examined doping effect of 3d transition metal elements (TM: Cr, Mn, Co, Ni, and Cu) at the Fe site of a quaternary fluoroarsenide CaFeAsF, an analogue of 1111-type parent compound LaFeAsO. The anomaly at ~120 K observed in resistivity (rho) vs. temperature (T) plot for the parent compound is suppressed by the doping of each TM element. Furthermore, Co- and Ni-doping (CaFe1-xTMxAsF, TM = Co, Ni) induces superconductivity with a transition temperature maximized at the nominal x = 0.10 for Co (22 K) and at x = 0.05 for Ni (12 K). These optimal doping levels may be understood by considering that Ni2+(3d8) adds double electrons to the FeAs layers compared with Co2+ (3d7). Increased x for Co or Ni breaks the superconductivity while metallic nature drho/dT > 0 is still kept. These observations indicate that Co and Ni work as electron donors. In contrast, neither of Cr, Mn nor Cu-doping induce superconductivity, yielding drho/dT < 0 in the below the rho-T anomaly temperature, indicating that these transition metal ions act as scattering centers. The two different behavior of TM replacing the Fe site is discussed in relation to the changes in the lattice constants with the doping.

Cobalt-substitution-induced Superconductivity in a New Compound with ZrCuSiAs-type Structure, SrFeAsF

We have synthesized a quaternary fluoroarsenide SrFeAsF with the ZrCuSiAs-type structure (P4/nmm, a = 0.3999 and c = 0.8973 nm), which is composed of an alternately stacked (FeAs)- and (SrF)+ layers, analogous to the FeAs-based superconductor LaFeAsO. SrFeAsF shows metallic type conduction with the anomaly at ~180 K. The partial replacement of the Fe with Co suppresses the anomaly and induces the superconductivity, while the maximal Tc (4 K for SrFe0.875Co0.125AsF) is much lower than that of the Co-substituted LaFeAsO. Replacement of (LaO)+ layers with (SrF)+ layers results in a enlargement of the c-axis length (+2.6%). These results suggest the importance of interlayer interaction as a critical Tc-controlling factor in FeAs-based superconductors.
