Spin dependent impurity effects in the 2D frustrated magnetism of NiGa$_2$S$_4$

Impurity effects on the triangular antiferromagnets Ni$_{1-x}M_x$Ga$_2$S$_4$ ($M=$ Mn, Fe, Co and Zn) are studied. The 2D frozen spin-disordered state of NiGa$_2$S$_4$ is stable against the substitution of Zn$^{2+}$ ($S=0$) and Heisenberg Fe$^{2+}$ ($S=2$) spins, and exhibits a $T^2$-dependent magnetic specific heat, scaled by the Weiss temperature. In contrast, the substitutions with Co$^{2+}$ ($S=3/2$) spin with Ising-like anisotropy and Heisenberg Mn$^{2+}$ ($S=5/2$) spin induce a conventional spin glass phase. From these comparisons, it is suggested that integer size of Heisenberg spins is important to stabilize the 2D coherent behavior observed in the frozen spin-disordered state.

Coherent Behavior and Nonmagnetic Impurity Effects of the Spin Disordered State in NiGa$_2$S$_4$

Nonmagnetic impurity effects of the spin disordered state in the triangular antiferromagnet NiGa$_2$S$_4$ was studied through magnetic and thermal measurements for Ni$_{1-x}$Zn$_x$Ga$_2$S$_4$ (0.0\le x\le 0.3). Only 1 % substitution is enough to strongly suppress the coherence observed in the spin disordered state. However, the suppression is not complete and the robust feature of the T^2 dependent specific heat and its scaling behavior with the Weiss temperature indicate the existence of a coherent Nambu-Goldstone mode. Absence of either conventional magnetic order or bulk spin freezing suggests a novel symmetry breaking of the ground state.

Probing the Kondo Lattice

We present a phenomenological solution of the Kondo lattice that is derived from an analysis of the bulk specific heat and spin susceptibility of the heavy electron superconductor CeCoIn5. We find that below a crossover temperature corresponding to the intersite coupling scale, T* ~ 45 K, the Kondo gas (of non-interacting Kondo impurities) partially condenses into a heavy electron "Kondo" liquid that has a temperature independent Wilson ratio = 2.0. The relative fraction, f, of the "condensed" Kondo liquid component plays the role of an order parameter; it increases linearly with decreasing temperature until it saturates at its low temperature value of 0.9. The resistivity is shown to be simply the product of (1-f) and that of an isolated Kondo impurity. The generality of this result is suggested by the corresponding analysis for Ce1-xLaxCoIn5 and CeIrIn5.

From Mott insulator to ferromagnetic metal: a pressure study of Ca$_{2}$RuO$_{4}$

We show that the pressure-temperature phase diagram of the Mott insulator Ca$_{2}$RuO$_{4}$ features a metal-insulator transition at 0.5GPa: at 300K from paramagnetic insulator to paramagnetic quasi-two-dimensional metal; at $T \leq$ 12K from antiferromagnetic insulator to ferromagnetic, highly anisotropic, three-dimensional metal. % We compare the metallic state to that of the structurally related p-wave superconductor Sr$_{2}$RuO$_{4}$, and discuss the importance of structural distortions, which are expected to couple strongly to pressure.

The ground state of Sr3Ru2O7 revisited; Fermi liquid close to a ferromagnetic instability

We show that single-crystalline Sr3Ru2O7 grown by a floating-zone technique is an isotropic paramagnet and a quasi-two dimensional metal as spin-triplet superconducting Sr2RuO4 is. The ground state is Fermi liquid with very low residual resistivity (3 micro ohm cm for in-plane currents) and a nearly ferromagnetic metal with the largest Wilson ratio Rw>10 among paramagnets so far. This contrasts with the ferromagnetic order at Tc=104 K reported on single crystals grown by a flux method [Cao et al., Phys. Rev. B 55, R672 (1997)]. We have also found a dramatic changeover from paramagnetism to ferromagnetism under applied pressure. This suggests the existence of a substantial ferromagnetic instability on the verge of a quantum phase transition in the Fermi liquid state.
