Effective radii of deuteron induced reactions

The continuum-discretized coupled-channels method (CDCC) for exclusive reactions and the eikonal reaction theory (ERT) as an extension of CDCC to inclusive reactions are applied to deuteron induced reactions. The CDCC result reproduces experimental data on the reaction cross section for $d+^{58}$Ni scattering at 200 MeV/nucleon and ERT does data on the neutron-stripping cross section for inclusive $^7$Li$(d,n)$ reaction at 40 MeV. For deuteron induced reactions at 200 MeV/nucleon, target-dependence of the reaction, elastic-breakup, nucleon-stripping, nucleon-removal, complete- and incomplete-fusion cross sections is clearly explained by simple formulae. Accuracy of the Glauber model is also investigated.

Three-Body Model Calculation of Spin Distribution in Two-Nucleon Transfer Reaction

The differential cross sections of two-nucleon transfer reactions 238U(18O,16O)240U around 10 MeV per nucleon are calculated by one-step Born-approximation with a 16O+2n+238U three-body model. The three-body wave function in the initial channel is obtained with the continuum-discretized coupled-channels method, and that in the final channel is evaluated with adiabatic approximation. The resulting cross sections have a peak around the grazing angle, and the spin distribution, i.e., the cross section at the peak as a function of the transferred spin, is investigated. The shape of the spin distribution is found not sensitive to the incident energies, optical potentials, and treatment of the breakup channels both in the initial and final states, while it depends on the excitation energy of the residual nucleus 240U. The peak of the spin distribution moves to the large-spin direction as the excitation energy increases. To fulfill the condition that the peak position should not exceeds 10 hbar, which is necessary for the surrogate ratio method to work, it is concluded that the excitation energy of 240U must be less than 10 MeV.

Neutrino reactions on $^{138}$La and $^{180}$Ta via charged and neutral currents by the Quasi-particle Random Phase Approximation (QRPA)

Cosmological origins of the two heaviest odd-odd nuclei, $^{138}$La and $^{180}$Ta, are believed to be closely related to the neutrino-process. We investigate in detail neutrino-induced reactions on the nuclei. Charged current (CC) reactions, $^{138}$Ba$ (ν_e, e^{-}) ^{138}$La and $^{180}$Hf$ (ν_e, e^{-}) ^{180}$Ta, are calculated by the standard Quasi-particle Random Phase Approximation (QRPA) with neutron-proton pairing as well as neutron-neutron, proton-proton pairing correlations. For neutral current (NC) reactions, $^{139}$La$ (ν ν^{'}) ^{139}${La}$^*$ and $^{181}$Ta$ (ν, ν^{'}) ^{181}$Ta$^*$, we generate ground and excited states of odd-even target nuclei, $^{139}$La and $^{181}$Ta, by operating one quasi-particle to even-even nuclei, $^{138}$Ba and $^{180}$Hf, which are assumed as the BCS ground state. Numerical results for CC reactions are shown to be consistent with recent semi-empirical data deduced from the Gamow-Teller strength distributions measured in the ($^{3}$He, t) reaction. Results for NC reactions are estimated to be smaller by a factor about 4 $\sim$ 5 rather than those by CC reactions. Finally, cross sections weighted by the incident neutrino flux in the core collapsing supernova are presented for further applications to the network calculations for relevant nuclear abundances.

Verification of the Surrogate Ratio Method

Effects of difference in the spin and parity distributions for the surrogate and neutron-induced reactions are investigated. Without assuming specific (schematic) spin-parity distributions, it was found that the surrogate ratio method can be employed to determine neutron fission and capture cross sections if 1) weak Weisskopf-Ewing condition (defined in this paper) is satisfied, 2) there exist two surrogate reactions whose spin-parity distributions of the decaying nuclei are almost equivalent, and 3) difference of the representative spin values between the neutron-induced and surrogate reactions is no much larger than 10 $\hbar$. If these conditions are satisfied, we need not to know the spin-parity distributions populated by the surrogate method. Instead, we should just select a pair of surrogate reactions which will populate the similar spin-parity distributions, using targets having similar structure and reactions having the similar reaction mechanisms. Achievable accuracy is estimated to be around 5 and 10 % for fission and capture channels, respectively, for nuclei of the Uranium region. The surrogate absolute method, on the contrary, can be marginally applicable to determination of fission cross sections. However, there will be little hope to apply this method for capture cross section measurements unless the spin-parity distributions in the neutron-induced and surrogate reactions are fairly close to each other or the difference can be corrected theoretically. The surrogate ratio method was shown also to be a robust method in the presence of breakup reactions, again, without assuming specific breakup reaction mechanisms.

Hyperon suppression in hadron-quark mixed phase

We investigate the property of the hadron-quark mixed phase using the Brueckner-Hartree-Fock model for hadron (hyperon) phase and the MIT bag model for quark phase. To satisfy the Gibbs conditions, charge density as well as baryon number density becomes non-uniform in the mixed phase, accompanying phase separation. We clarify the roles of the surface tension and the charge screening effect. We show that the screened Coulomb interaction tends to make the geometrical structure of the mixed phase less stable, and the resultant EOS becomes similar to the one given by the Maxwell construction. The composition of the mixed phase, however, is very different from that of the Maxwell construction; in particular, hyperons are completely suppressed in the mixed phase, because hadron phase is positively charged. This is a novel mechanism of hyperon suppression in compact stars.

Equation of state of nuclear matter in the first order phase transition

We investigate the properties of nuclear matter at the first-order phase transitions (FOPT) such as liquid-gas phase transition, kaon condensation, and hadron-quark phase transition. As a general feature of the FOPT of matter consisting of many species of charged particles, there appears a mixed phases with regular structures called "pasta" due to the balance of the Coulomb repulsion and the surface tension between two phases. The equation of state (EOS) of mixed phase is different from those obtained by a bulk application of Gibbs conditions or by the Maxwell construction due to the effects of the non-uniform structure. We show that the charge screening and strong surface tension make the EOS close to that of the Maxwell construction.

Non-Uniform Structure of Matter and the Equation of State

We investigate the non-uniform structures and the equation of state (EOS) of nuclear matter in the context of the first-order phase transitions (FOPT) such as liquid-gas phase transition, kaon condensation, and hadron-quark phase transition. During FOPT the mixed phases appear, where matter exhibits non-uniform structures called ``Pasta'' structures due to the balance of the Coulomb repulsion and the surface tension between two phases. We treat these effects self-consistently, properly taking into account of the Poisson equation and the Gibbs conditions. Consequently, they make the EOS of the mixed phase closer to that of Maxwell construction due to the Debye screening. This is a general feature of the mixed phase consisting of many species of charged particles.

Hadron-quark mixed phase in hyperon stars

We analyze the different possibilities for the hadron-quark phase transition occurring in beta-stable matter including hyperons in neutron stars. We use a Brueckner-Hartree-Fock approach including hyperons for the hadronic equation of state and a generalized MIT bag model for the quark part. We then point out in detail the differences between Maxwell and Gibbs phase transition constructions including the effects of surface tension and electromagnetic screening. We find only a small influence on the maximum neutron star mass, whereas the radius of the star and in particular its internal structure are more affected.

Quark deconfinement transition in hyperonic matter

We discuss the properties of the hadron-quark mixed phase in compact stars using a realistic equation of state of hyperonic matter and the MIT bag model. We find that the equation of state of the mixed phase is similar to that given by the Maxwell construction, but that the mixed phase becomes mechanically unstable if the surface tension of the interface between the two pure phases is strong enough. The composition of the mixed phase is very different from that of the Maxwell construction; in particular, hyperons are completely suppressed.

Neutrino Nucleus Reactions based on New Shell Model Hamiltonians

A new shell model Hamiltonian for p-shell nuclei which properly takes into account important roles of spin-isospin interactions is used to obtain cross sections of neutrino-^12C reactions induced by decay-at-rest (DAR) neutrinos as well as supernona neutrinos. Branching ratios to various decay channels are calculated by the Hauser-Feshbach theory. Neutrino-^4He reactions are also investigated by using recent shell model Hamiltonians. The reaction cross sections are found to be enhanced for both ^12C and ^4He compared with previous calculations. As an interesting consequence of this, a possible enhancement of the production yields of light elements, ^7Li and ^11B, during supernova explosions is pointed out.

Pasta structures in compact stars

We review our recent works about ``pasta'' structures following the first-order phase transition in dense matter, which correspond to the structured mixed phases with geometrical symmetries. Three kinds of phase transitions at different density ranges are examined as the stages of pasta structures: liquid-gas phase transition at subnuclear density, kaon condensation and hadron-quark phase transition at high density. Charge density as well as particle density is non-uniform there. A consistent treatment of the Coulomb potential and the particle densities is presented and a peculiar role of the Coulomb potential is elucidated: the physical picture of the Maxwell construction will be effectively recovered. It largely influences the density regime of pasta structures by the charge screening effect.

Charge screening effect on hadron-quark mixed phase in compact stars

We study the charge screening effect in the hadron-quark mixed phase. By including the charge screening effect, rearrangement of charged particles occurs and some part becomes locally charge-neutral. As a result the equation of state for the mixed phase becomes close to that given by the Maxwell construction, which means that the Maxwell construction would effectively gain the physical meaning again even in the system with two or more chemical potentials. We also discuss the interplay of the surface tension and the Coulomb interaction. Both effects would restrict the region of the mixed phase in the core of hybrid stars.

Finite-size effects on the hadron-quark mixed phase

We show that the hadron-quark mixed phase is restricted to narrow range of baryon chemical potential by the charge screening effect. Accordingly the mixed phase expected in hadron-quark hybrid stars should be narrow. Although the screening would not have large effect in bulk properties of the star such as mass or radius, it change the internal structure of the star very much, which may be tested by the cooling curve, glitch phenomena or gravitational waves.

Charge screening effect in the hadron-quark mixed phase

The Coulomb interaction effect and the surface effect are consistently taken into account in the hadron-quark mixed phase. These two finite-size effects greatly change the properties of the mixed phase and restrict its density region. In particular, the charge screening effect and the rearrangement of the charged particles are elucidated. Keeping the Gibbs conditions throughout the numerical procedure, we show the Maxwell construction effectively regain the physical meaning and the equation of state becomes similar to that given by the Maxwell construction.

Finite size effects on kaonic pasta structures

Non-uniform structures of mixed phases at the first-order phase transition to charged kaon condensation are studied using a density functional theory within the relativistic mean field model. Including electric field effects and applying the Gibbs conditions in a proper way, we numerically determine density profiles of nucleons, electrons and condensed kaons. Importance of charge screening effects is elucidated and thereby we show that the Maxwell construction is effectively justified. Surface effect is also studied to figure out its effect on the density profiles.

Molecular dynamics simulation for baryon-quark phase transition at finite temperature and density

We study the baryon-quark phase transition in a molecular dynamics (MD) of quark degrees of freedom at finite temperature and density. The baryon state at low density and temperature, and the deconfined quark state at high density and temperature are reproduced. We investigate the equations of state of matters with different $u$-$d$-$s$ compositions. Then we draw phase diagrams in the temperature-density plane by this simulation. It is found that the baryon-quark transition is sensitive to the quark width.
