Electromagnetic and thermal responses of Z topological insulators and superconductors in odd spatial dimensions

The relation between bulk topological invariants and experimentally observable physical quantities is a fundamental property of topological insulators and superconductors. In the case of chiral symmetric systems in odd spatial dimensions such as time-reversal invariant topological superconductors and topological insulators with sublattice symmetry, this relation has not been well understood. We clarify that the winding number which characterizes the bulk Z non-triviality of these systems can appear in electromagnetic and thermal responses in a certain class of heterostructure systems. It is also found that the Z non-triviality can be detected in the bulk "chiral polarization", which is induced by magnetoelectric effects.

Index theorem for topological heterostructure systems

We apply the Niemi-Semenoff index theorem to an s-wave superconductor junction system attached with a magnetic insulator on the surface of a three-dimensional topological insulator. We find that the total number of the Majorana zero energy bound states is governed not only by the gapless helical mode but also by the massive modes localized at the junction interface. The result implies that the topological protection for Majorana zero modes in class D heterostructure junctions may be broken down under a particular but realistic condition.

Green's Function Method for Line Defects and Gapless Modes in Topological Insulators : Beyond Semiclassical Approach

Defects which appear in heterostructure junctions involving topological insulators are sources of gapless modes governing the low energy properties of the systems, as recently elucidated by Teo and Kane [Physical Review B82, 115120 (2010)]. A standard approach for the calculation of topological invariants associated with defects is to deal with the spatial inhomogeneity raised by defects within a semiclassical approximation. In this paper, we propose a full quantum formulation for the topological invariants characterizing line defects in three-dimensional insulators with no symmetry by using the Green's function method. On the basis of the full quantum treatment, we demonstrate the existence of a nontrivial topological invariant in the topological insulator-ferromagnet tri-junction systems, for which a semiclassical approximation fails to describe the topological phase. Also, our approach enables us to study effects of electron-electron interactions and impurity scattering on topological insulators with spatial inhomogeneity which gives rise to the Axion electrodynamics responses.

Correlation effects on a topological insulator at finite temperatures

We analyze the effects of the local Coulomb interaction on a topological band insulator (TBI) by applying the dynamical mean field theory to a generalized Bernevig-Hughes-Zhang model having electron correlations. It is elucidated how the correlation effects modify electronic properties in the TBI phase at finite temperatures. In particular, the band inversion character of the TBI inevitably leads to the large reduction of the spectral gap via the renormalization effect, which results in the strong temperature-dependence of the spin Hall conductivity. We clarify that a quantum phase transition from the TBI to a trivial Mott insulator, if it is nonmagnetic, is of first order with a hysteresis. This is confirmed via the interaction dependence of the double occupancy and the spectral function. A magnetic instability is also addressed. All these results imply that the spectral gap does not close at the transition.

Spin nematic state as a candidate of the hidden order phase of URu$_2$Si$_2$

Motivated by the recent discovery of broken four-fold symmetry in the hidden order phase of URu$_2$Si$_2$[R. Okazaki et al., Science {\bf 331}, 439 (2011)], we examine a scenario of a spin nematic state as a possible candidate of the hidden order phase. We demonstrate that the scenario naturally explains most of experimental observations, and furthermore, reproduces successfully the temperature dependence of the spin anisotropy detected by the above-mentioned experiment in a semi-quantitative way. This result provides strong evidence for the realization of the spin nematic order.

Non-Abelian Topological Orders and Majorana Fermions in Spin-Singlet Superconductors

The non-Abelian topological order for superconductors is characterized by the existence of zero-energy Majorana fermions in edges of systems and in a vortex of a macroscopic condensate, which obey the non-Abelian statistics. This paper is devoted to an extensive study on the non-Abelian topological phase of spin-singlet superconductors with the Rashba spin-orbit interaction proposed in our previous letter [M. Sato, Y. Takahashi, and S. Fujimoto, Phys. Rev. Lett. 103, 020401 (2009)]. We mainly consider the s-wave pairing state and the d+id pairing state. In the case of d+id-wave pairing, Majorana fermions appear in almost all parameter regions of the mixed state under an applied magnetic field, provided that the Fermi level crosses k-points in the vicinity of the Gamma point or the M point in the Brillouin zone, while in the case of s-wave pairing, a strong magnetic field, the Zeeman energy of which is larger than the superconducting gap is required to realize the topological phase. We clarify that Majorana fermions in Rashba spin-singlet superconductors are much more stable than those realized in spin-triplet p+ip superconductors in certain parameter regions. We also investigate the topological number which ensures the topological stability of the phase in detail. Furthermore, as a byproduct, we found that topological order is also realized in conventional spin (or charge) density wave states with the Rashba spin-orbit interaction, for which massless Dirac fermions appear in the edge of the systems and charge fractionalization occurs.

Topological Hall Effect in Inhomogeneous Superconductors

We propose a possible mechanism of topological Hall effect in inhomogeneous superconducting states. In our scenario, the Berry phase effect associated with spatially modulated superconducting order parameter gives rise to a fictitious Lorentz force acting on quasiparticles. In the case of the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov state, the topological Hall effect is detected by applying an electromagnetic wave with a tuned wave number on a surface of the system.

Upper critical field in superconductors near ferromagnetic quantum critical points; UCoGe

We study the strong-coupling superconductivity near ferromagnetic quantum critical points, mainly focusing on the upper critical fields $H_{c2}$. Based on our simple model calculations, we discuss experimentally observed unusual behaviors of $H_{c2}$ in a recently discovered ferromagnetic superconductor UCoGe. Especially, the large anisotropy between $H_{c2}\parallel a$-axis and $H_{c2}\parallel c$-axis, and the strong-coupling behaviors in $H_{c2}^{\parallel a}$ are investigated. We also examine effects of non-analytic corrections in the spin susceptibility on the superconductivity, which can arise from effective long range interactions due to particle-hole excitations.

Unconventional Anomalous Hall Effect in the Metallic Triangular-Lattice Magnet PdCrO2

We experimentally reveal an unconventional anomalous Hall effect (UAHE) in a quasi-two-dimensional triangular-lattice antiferromagnet PdCrO2. Using high quality single crystals of PdCrO2, we found that the Hall resistivity deviates from the conventional behavior below T* = 20 K, noticeably lower than TN = 37.5 K, at which Cr^{3+} (S=3/2) spins order in a 120 degree structure. In view of the theoretical expectation that the spin chirality cancels out in the simplest 120 degree spin structure, we discuss required conditions for the emergence of UAHE within Berry-phase mechanisms.

Majorana Fermions in Nodal Superconductors: Gapless Topological Phase

We demonstrate that Majorana fermions exist in edges of systems and in a vortex core even for superconductors with nodal excitations such as the d-wave pairing state under a particular but realistic condition in the case with an anti-symmetric spin-orbit interaction and a nonzero magnetic field below the upper critical field. We clarify that the Majorana fermion state is topologically protected in spite of the presence of bulk gapless nodal excitations, because of the existence of a nontrivial topological number. Our finding drastically enlarges target systems where we can explore the Majorana fermion state.

Hall Effect of Spin Waves in Frustrated Magnets

We examine a possible spin Hall effect for localized spin systems with no charge degrees of freedom. In this scenario, a longitudinal magnetic field gradient induces a transverse spin current carried by spin wave excitations with an anomalous velocity which is associated with the Berry curvature raised by spin chirality, in analogy with anomalous Hall effects in itinerant electron systems. Our argument is based on a semiclassical equations of motion applicable to general spin systems. Also, a microscopic model of frustrated magnets which exhibits the anamalous spin Hall effect is presented.

Unambiguous probe of parity-mixing of Cooper pairs in noncentrosymmetric superconductors

We propose an experimental scheme to detect unambiguously parity-mxing of Cooper pairs in noncentrosymmetric superconductors, which utilizes crossed Andreev reflection processes between two oppositely spin-polarized normal metal leads and a noncentrosymmetric superconductor. It is demonstrated that a non-local conductance exhibits a clear signature of parity breaking of Cooper pairs, and thus, can be a direct probe for the parity-mixing.

Non-Abelian Topological Order in S-Wave Superfluids of Ultracold Fermionic Atoms

We show that in s-wave superfluids of cold fermionic atoms with laser-field-generated effective spin-orbit interactions, a topological phase with gapless edge states and Majorana fermion quasiparticles obeying the non-Abelian statistics is realized in the case with a large Zeeman magnetic field. Our scenario provides a promising approach for quantum computation manipulating non-Abelian anyons via an s-wave Feshbach resonance.

Pairing state at an interface of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$: parity-mixing, restored time-reversal symmetry, and topological superconductivity

We investigate pairing states realized at the (001) interface of a spin-triplet superconductor Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ on the basis of microscopic calculations. Because of a Rashba-type spin-orbit interaction induced at the interface, strong parity-mixing of Cooper pairs between a spin-singlet state and a spin-triplet state occurs in this system. There are also strong inter-band pair correlations between the spin-orbit split bands, in spite of the considerably large spin-orbit splitting. This is due to frustration between the spin-orbit interaction and pairing interactions. In this pairing state, time-reversal symmetry is restored, in contrast to the bulk Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ which is believed to be a chiral $p+ip$ superconductor with broken time-reversal symmetry. It is demonstrated that, because of these features, the pairing state at the interface is a promising candidate for the recently proposed time-reversal invariant topological superconductor.

Topological Phases of Noncentrosymmetric Superconductors: Edge States, Majorana Fermions, and the Non-Abelian Statistics

The existence of edge states and zero energy modes in vortex cores is a hallmark of topologically nontrivial phases realized in various condensed matter systems such as the fractional quantum Hall states, p+ip superconductors, and Z_2 insulators (quantum spin Hall state). We examine this scenario for two dimensional noncentrosymmetric superconductors which allow the parity-mixing of Cooper pairs. It is found that even when the s-wave pairing gap is nonzero, provided that the superconducting gap of spin-triplet pairs is larger than that of spin-singlet pairs, gapless edge states and zero energy Majorana modes in vortex cores emerge, characterizing topological order. Furthermore, it is shown that for Rashba superconductors, the quantum spin Hall effect produced by gapless edge states exists even under an applied magnetic field which breaks time-reversal symmetry provided that the field direction is perpendicular to the propagating direction of the edge modes. This result making a sharp contrast to the Z_2 insulator is due to an accidental symmetry inherent in the Rashba model. It is also demonstrated that in the case with magnetic fields, the non-Abelian statistics of vortices is possible under a particular but realistic condition.

Topological Order and Non-Abelian Statistics in Noncentrosymmetric s-Wave Superconductors

We demonstrate that in two-dimensional noncentrosymmetric s-wave superconductors under applied magnetic fields for a particular electron density, topological order emerges, and there exists a zero energy Majorana fermion mode in a vortex core, which obeys non-Abelian statistics, in analogy with p_x+ip_y superconductors, the Moore-Read Pfaffian quantum Hall state, and the gapped non-Abelian spin liquid phase of the Kitaev model.

Microscopic Mechanism and Pairing Symmetry of Superconductivity in the Noncentrosymmetric Heavy Fermion Systems CeRhSI$_3$ and CeIrSi$_3$

We study the pairing symmetry of the noncentrosymmetric heavy fermion superconductors CeRhSi$_3$ and CeIrSi$_3$ under pressures, which are both antiferromagnets at ambient pressure. We solve the Eliashberg equation by means of the random phase approximation and find that the mixed state of extended s-wave and p-wave rather than the $d+f$ wave state could be realized by enhanced antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations. It is elucidated that the gap function has line nodes on the Fermi surface and the resulting density of state in the superconducting state shows a similar character to that of usual d-wave superconductors, resulting in the NMR relaxation rate $1/(T_1T)$ that exhibits no coherence peak and behaves like $1/(T_1T)\propto T^2$ at low temperatures.

Theory of Parity Violated Cooper Pairs in Weakly Noncentrosymmetric Superconductors

We propose that in noncentrosymmetric superconductors with weakly asymmetric spin-orbit interaction the field-induced pair correlation between the spin-orbit split different bands ignored in previous studies yields unique effects; i.e. the Pauli depairing effect is anisotropic in the momentum space, and as a result, magnetic fields induce point-node-like anisotropic gap structure of the quasiparticle energy even for isotropic s-wave states, which seriously affects thermodynamic quantities at low temperatures. Also, it is shown that when the magnitude of the spin-orbit interaction is smaller than the superconducting gap, the specific heat as a function of a magnetic field exhibit a two-gap-like behavior, even when there is only a single gap. These features characterize parity violated Cooper pairs in weakly noncentrosymmetric systems. We suggest the possible detection of these effects in the superconductor with weakly broken inversion symmetry Y_2C_3.
