A Possibility of Lorentz Violation in the Higgs Sector

In string theory, a scalar field often appears as a moduli of a geometrical configuration of D-branes in higher dimensional space. In the low energy effective theory on D-branes, the distance between D-branes is translated into the energy scale of the gauge symmetry breaking. In this paper, we study a phenomenological consequence of a possibility that the Higgs field is such a moduli field and the D-brane configuration is stabilized by a stationary motion, in particular, revolution of D-branes on which we live. Then, due to the Coriolis force, Higgs mode is mixed with the angular fluctuation of branes and the Lorentz symmetry is violated in the dispersion relation of the Higgs boson. The Higgs boson mass measurements at LHC experiments give an upper bound $\sim {\cal O}(0.1)$ GeV for the angular frequency of the revolution of D-branes.

Effective Potential for Revolving D-branes

We quantize an open string stretched between D0-branes revolving around each other. The worldsheet theory is analyzed in a rotating coordinate system in which the worldsheet fields obey simple boundary conditions, but instead the worldsheet Lagrangian becomes nonlinear. We quantize the system perturbatively with respect to the velocity of the D-branes and determine the one-loop partition function of the open string, from which we extract the short-distance behavior of the effective potential for the revolving D0-branes. It is compared with the calculation of the partition function of open strings between D0-branes moving at a constant relative velocity.

Large-scale inhomogeneity of dark energy produced in the ancestor vacuum

We investigate large-scale inhomogeneity of dark energy in the bubble nucleation scenario of the universe. In this scenario, the present universe was created by a bubble nucleation due to quantum tunneling from a metastable ancestor vacuum, followed by a primordial inflationary era. During the bubble nucleation, supercurvature modes of some kind of a scalar field are produced, and remain until present without decaying; thus they can play a role of the dark energy, if the mass of the scalar field is sufficiently light in the present universe. The supercurvature modes fluctuate at a very large spatial scale, much longer than the Hubble length in the present universe. Thus they create large-scale inhomogeneities of the dark energy, and generate large-scale anisotropies in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) fluctuations. This is a notable feature of this scenario, where quantum fluctuations of a scalar field are responsible for the dark energy. In this paper, we calculate imprints of the scenario on the CMB anisotropies through the integrated Sachs-Wolfe (ISW) effect, and give observational constraints on the curvature parameter $Ω_K$ and on an additional parameter $ε$ describing some properties of the ancestor vacuum.

Density Renormalization Group for Classical Liquids

We study response of liquid to a scale transformation, which generates a change of the liquid density, and obtain a set of differential equations for correlation functions. The set of equations, which we call density renormalization group equations (DRGEs), is similar to the BBGKY hierarchy as it relates different multiple-point correlation functions. In particular, we derive DRGEs for one-particle irreducible vertex functions of liquid by performing Legendre transformations, which enables us to calculate properties of liquid at higher density in terms of correlation functions at lower density.

Observational signatures of dark energy produced in an ancestor vacuum: Forecast for galaxy surveys

We study observational consequences of the model for dark energy proposed in [1] (Aoki et al., Phys.Rev. D97 (2018) no.4, 043517). We assume our universe has been created by bubble nucleation, and consider quantum fluctuations of an ultralight scalar field. Residual effects of fluctuations generated in an ancestor vacuum (de Sitter space in which the bubble was formed) is interpreted as dark energy. Its equation of state parameter w(z) has a characteristic form, approaching -1 in the future, but -1/3 in the past. A novel feature of our model is that dark energy effectively increases the magnitude of the negative spatial curvature in the evolution of the Hubble parameter, though it does not alter the definition of the angular diameter distance. We perform Fisher analysis and forecast the constraints for our model from future galaxy surveys by Square Kilometre Array and Euclid. Due to degeneracy between dark energy and the spatial curvature, galaxy surveys alone can determine these parameters only for optimistic choices of their values, but combination with other independent observations, such as CMB, will greatly improve the chance of determining them.

Secular Terms in Dyson Series to All-Orders of Perturbation

In classical and quantum systems, perturbation of an evolution equation is often invalidated by secular terms which diverge at late times. The diverging behavior of evolution can be remedied by various techniques of resumma- tion such as renormalization group or multi-scale analysis. In this paper, we prove that, in a generic quantum mechanical system, secular terms can be systematically removed to all orders in the Dyson series by the method of improved (renormalized) perturbation. A recurrence relation to provide an explicit method to remove the secular terms is given. As a byproduct, we give a simple method to obtain energy eigenvalues and decay rates to all orders of perturbation.

Vacuum fluctuations in an ancestor vacuum: A possible dark energy candidate

We consider an open universe created by bubble nucleation, and study possible effects of an "ancestor vacuum" (de Sitter space in which bubble nucleation occurred) on the present universe. We compute vacuum expectation values of energy-momentum tensor for a minimally coupled scalar field, carefully taking into account the effect of the ancestor vacuum by the Euclidean prescription. In the study of the time evolution, an important role is played by the so-called supercurvature mode, which is non-normalizable on a spatial slice of open universe and decays in time most slowly. We point out that vacuum energy of a quantum field can be regarded as dark energy if mass of the field is of order the present Hubble parameter or smaller. We obtain preliminary results for the dark energy equation of state w(z) as a function of the redshift.

Scale-invariant Feature Extraction of Neural Network and Renormalization Group Flow

Theoretical understanding of how deep neural network (DNN) extracts features from input images is still unclear, but it is widely believed that the extraction is performed hierarchically through a process of coarse-graining. It reminds us of the basic concept of renormalization group (RG) in statistical physics. In order to explore possible relations between DNN and RG, we use the Restricted Boltzmann machine (RBM) applied to Ising model and construct a flow of model parameters (in particular, temperature) generated by the RBM. We show that the unsupervised RBM trained by spin configurations at various temperatures from $T=0$ to $T=6$ generates a flow along which the temperature approaches the critical value $T_c=2.27$. This behavior is opposite to the typical RG flow of the Ising model. By analyzing various properties of the weight matrices of the trained RBM, we discuss why it flows towards $T_c$ and how the RBM learns to extract features of spin configurations.

RG-improvement of the effective action with multiple mass scales

Improving the effective action by the renormalization group (RG) with several mass scales is an important problem in quantum field theories. A method based on the decoupling theorem was proposed in \cite{Bando:1992wy} and systematically improved \cite{Casas:1998cf} to take threshold effects into account. In this paper, we apply the method to the Higgs-Yukawa model, including wave-function renormalizations, and to a model with two real scalar fields $(φ, h)$. In the Higgs-Yukawa model, even at one-loop level, Feynman diagrams contain propagators with different mass scales and decoupling scales must be chosen appropriately to absorb threshold corrections. On the other hand, in the two-scalar model, the mass matrix of the scalar fields is a function of their field values $(φ, h)$ and the resultant running couplings obey different RGEs on a different point of the field space. By solving the RGEs, we can obtain the RG improved effective action in the whole region of the scalar fields.

Electromagnetic Radiation in a Semi-Compact Space

In this note, we investigate the electromagnetic radiation emitted from a revolving point charge in a compact space. If the point charge is circulating with an angular frequency $ω_0$ on the $(x,y)$-plane at $z=0$ with boundary conditions, $x \sim x+2 πR$ and $y \sim y+2πR$, it emits radiation into the $z$-direction of $z$ in $ [-\infty, +\infty]$. We find that the radiation shows discontinuities as a function of $ω_0 R$ at which a new propagating mode with a different Fourier component appears. For a small radius limit $ω_0 R \ll 1$, all the Fourier modes except the zero mode on $(x,y)$-plane are killed, but an effect of squeezing the electric field totally enhances the radiation. In the large volume limit $ω_0 R \rightarrow \infty$, the energy flux of the radiation reduces to the expected Larmor formula.

Entanglement of the Vacuum between Left, Right, Future, and Past: The Origin of Entanglement-Induced Quantum Radiation

The Minkowski vacuum state is expressed as an entangled state between the left and right Rindler wedges when it is constructed on the Rindler vacuum. In this paper, we further examine the entanglement structure and extend the expression to the future (expanding) and past (shrinking) Kasner spacetimes. This clarifies the origin of the quantum radiation produced by an Unruh--DeWitt detector in uniformly accelerated motion in the four-dimensional Minkowski spacetime. We also investigate the two-dimensional massless case where the quantum radiation vanishes but the same entanglement structure exists.

QCD-Electroweak First-Order Phase Transition in a Supercooled Universe

If the electroweak sector of the standard model is described by classically conformal dynamics, the early Universe evolution can be substantially altered. It is already known that---contrarily to the standard model case---a first order electroweak phase transition may occur. Here we show that, depending on the model parameters, a dramatically different scenario may happen: A first-order, six massless quark QCD phase transition occurs first, which then triggers the electroweak symmetry breaking. We derive the necessary conditions for this dynamics to occur, using the specific example of the classically conformal B-L model. In particular, relatively light weakly coupled particles are predicted, with implications for collider searches. This scenario is also potentially rich in cosmological consequences, such as renewed possibilities for electroweak baryogenesis, altered dark matter production, and gravitational wave production, as we briefly comment upon.

Entanglement-induced quantum radiation

Quantum entanglement of the Minkowski vacuum state between left and right Rindler wedges generates thermal behavior in the right Rindler wedge, which is known as the Unruh effect. In this letter, we show that there is another consequence of this entanglement, namely entanglement-induced quantum radiation emanating from a uniformly accelerated object. We clarify why it is in agreement with our intuition that incoming and outgoing energy fluxes should cancel each other out in a thermalized state.

Baryon asymmetry from primordial black holes

We propose a new scenario of the baryogenesis from primordial black holes (PBH). Assuming presence of microscopic baryon (or lepton) number violation and a CP violating operator such as $\partial_αF(\mathcal{R_{....}} ) J^α$, where $F(\mathcal{R_{....}})$ is a scalar function of the Riemann tensor, time evolution of an evaporating black hole generates baryonic (leptonic) chemical potential at the horizon; consequently PBH enumerates asymmetric Hawking radiation between baryons (leptons) and anti-baryons (leptons). Though the operator is higher dimensional and largely suppressed by a high mass scale $M_*$, we show that sufficient amount of asymmetry can be generated for a wide range of parameters of the PBH mass $M_{\rm PBH}$, its abundance $Ω_{\rm PBH}$, and the scale $M_*$.

Quantum radiation produced by the entanglement of quantum fields

We investigate the quantum radiation produced by an Unruh-De Witt detector in a uniformly accelerating motion coupled to the vacuum fluctuations. Quantum radiation is nonvanishing, which is consistent with the previous calculation by Lin and Hu [Phys. Rev. D 73, 124018 (2006)]. We infer that this quantum radiation from the Unruh-De Witt detector is generated by the nonlocal correlation of the Minkowski vacuum state, which has its origin in the entanglement of the state between the left and the right Rindler wedges.

Reinterpretation of the Starobinsky model

The Starobinsky model of inflation, consistent with Planck 2015, has a peculiar form of the action, which contains the leading Einstein term $R$, the $R^2$ term with a huge coefficient, and negligible higher-order terms. We propose an explanation of this form based on compactification of extra dimensions. Once tuning of order $10^{-4}$ is accepted to suppress the linear term $R$, we no longer have to suppress higher-oder terms, which give nontrivial corrections to the Starobinsky model. We show our predictions of the spectral index, its runnings, and the tensor-to-scalar ratio. Finally, we discuss a possibility that quantum gravity may appear at the scale $Λ\gtrsim 5 \times 10^{15}$ GeV.

Dynamical fine-tuning of initial conditions for small field inflations

Small-field inflation (SFI) is widely considered to be unnatural because an extreme fine-tuning of the initial condition is necessary for sufficiently large e-folding. In this paper, we show that the unnaturally-looking initial condition can be dynamically realised without any fine-tuning if the SFI occurs after rapid oscillations of the inflaton field and particle creations by preheating. In fact, if the inflaton field $ϕ$ is coupled to another scalar field $χ$ through the interaction $g^2 χ^2 ϕ^2$ and the vacuum energy during the small field inflation is given by $λM^4$, the initial value can be dynamically set at $(\sqrtλ/g) M^2/M_{\rm pl}$, which is much smaller than the typical scale of the potential $M.$ This solves the initial condition problem in the new inflation model or some classes of the hilltop inflation models.

Evolution of Vacuum Fluctuations of an Ultra-Light Massive Scalar Field generated during and before Inflation

We consider an ultra-light scalar field with a mass comparable to (or lighter than) the Hubble parameter of the present universe, and calculate the time evolution of the energy-momentum tensor of the vacuum fluctuations generated during and before inflation until the late-time radiation-dominated and matter-dominated universe. The equation of state changes from $w=1/3$ in the early universe to $w=-1$ at present, and it can give a candidate for the dark energy that we observe today. It then oscillates between $w=-1$ and $1$ with the amplitude of the energy density decaying as $a^{-3}$. If the fluctuations are generated during ordinary inflation with the Hubble parameter $H_I \lesssim 10^{-5} M_{\rm Pl}$, where $M_{\rm Pl}$ is the reduced Planck scale, we need a very large e-folding number $N \gtrsim 10^{12}$ to explain the present dark energy of the order of $10^{-3} {\rm eV}$. If a Planckian universe with a large Hubble parameter $H_P \sim M_{\rm Pl}$ existed before the ordinary inflation, an e-folding number $N \sim 240$ of the Planckian inflation is sufficient.
