Approximate reservoir computing with a semiconductor laser for reducing energy consumption

Photonic reservoir computing is a promising physical machine-learning technique for predicting time-series data. The quantization of the response signal from the reservoir is required for the implementation of photonic reservoir computing, and the number of quantization bits and sampling frequency need to be optimized to achieve high performance and low energy consumption. However, few studies have been reported to investigate the effect of bit quantization and sampling frequency. In this study, we introduce a concept of approximate reservoir computing with a semiconductor laser by quantizing the amplitude of node states in the reservoir and output weights. We evaluate the performance of a chaotic time-series prediction task and energy consumption per sample. We achieve significant reduction of energy consumption by optimizing the number of quantization bits, the sampling frequency, and the injection current of the semiconductor laser, while maintaining the prediction performance.

PrometheusFree: Concurrent Detection of Laser Fault Injection Attacks in Optical Neural Networks

Silicon Photonics-based AI Accelerators (SPAAs) have been considered as promising AI accelerators achieving high energy efficiency and low latency. While many researchers focus on improving SPAAs' energy efficiency and latency, their physical security has only recently received attention. While it is essential to deliver strong optical neural network inferencing approaches, their success and adoption are predicated on their ability to deliver a secure execution environment. Towards this end, this paper proposes PrometheusFree, an optical neural network framework that is capable of concurrent detection of laser fault injection attacks. This paper first presents an illustrative threat of laser fault injection attacks on SPAAs, capable of subjecting the optical neural network to misclassifications. The threat then is addressed in this paper by developing techniques for concurrent detection of the laser fault injection attacks. Furthermore, this paper introduces a novel application of Wavelength Division Perturbation (WDP) technique where wavelength-dependent Vector Matrix Multiplication (VMM) results are utilized to boost fault attack detection accuracy. Simulation results show that PrometheusFree achieves over 96% attack-caused misprediction recall as the use of the WDP technique squashes the attack success rate by 38.6% on average. Compared with prior art, PrometheusFree limits the average attack success ratio to 0.019, yielding a 95.3% reduction. The experimental results confirm the superiority of the concurrent detection and the boost in attack detection abilities imparted by the WDP approaches.

Hypergroups Related to a Pair of Compact Hypergroups

The purpose of the present paper is to investigate a hypergroup associated with irreducible characters of a compact hypergroup $H$ and a closed subhypergroup $H_0$ of $H$ with $|H/H_0|< +\infty$. The convolution of this hypergroup is introduced by inducing irreducible characters of $H_0$ to $H$ and by restricting irreducible characters of $H$ to $H_0$. The method of proof relies on the notion of an induced character and an admissible hypergroup pair.

Hypergroups arising from characters of a compact group and its subgroup

The purpose of the present paper is to investigate a hypergroup arising from irreducible characters of a compact group G and a closed subgroup of G with finite index. The convolution of this hypergroup is introduced by inducing irreducible representations and by restricting irreducible representations. The method of proof relies on character formulae of induced representations of compact groups and of Frobenius' reciprocity theorem.

Commutative hypergroups associated with a hyperfield

In the present paper we introduce a commutative hypergroup associated with a hyperfield of a compact commutative hypergroup based on a discrete commutative hypergroup. Moreover we investigate the dual hyperfield and show the dual relation. As an application we study some hypergroups related to a pair of commutative hypergroups.
