Gotzmann ideals of the polynomial ring

Let $A = K[x_1, ..., x_n]$ denote the polynomial ring in $n$ variables over a field $K$. We will classify all the Gotzmann ideals of $A$ with at most $n$ generators. In addition, we will study Hilbert functions $H$ for which all homogeneous ideals of $A$ with the Hilbert function $H$ have the same graded Betti numbers. These Hilbert functions will be called inflexible Hilbert functions. We introduce the notion of segmentwise critical Hilbert function and show that segmentwise critical Hilbert functions are inflexible.

Generic initial ideals and squeezed spheres

In 1988 Kalai construct a large class of simplicial spheres, called squeezed spheres, and in 1991 presented a conjectured about generic initial ideals of Stanley--Reisner ideals of squeezed spheres. In the present paper this conjecture will be proved. In order to prove Kalai's conjecture, based on the fact that every squeezed $(d-1)$-sphere is the boundary of a certain $d$-ball, called a squeezed $d$-ball, generic initial ideals of Stanley--Reisner ideals of squeezed balls will be determined. In addition, generic initial ideals of exterior face ideals of squeezed balls are determined. On the other hand, we study the squeezing operation, which assigns to each Gorenstein* complex $Γ$ having the weak Lefschetz property a squeezed sphere $\mathrm{Sq}(Γ)$, and show that this operation increases graded Betti numbers.

Hilbert functions of d-regular ideals

In the present paper, we characterize all possible Hilbert functions of graded ideals in a polynomial ring whose regularity is smaller than or equal to $d$, where $d$ is a positive integer. In addition, we prove the following result which is a generalization of Bigatti, Hulett and Pardue's result: Let $p \geq 0$ and $d>0$ be integers. If the base field is a field of characteristic 0 and there is a graded ideal $I$ whose projective dimension $\mathrm{proj\ dim}(I)$ is smaller than or equal to $p$ and whose regularity $\mathrm{reg}(I)$ is smaller than or equal to $d$, then there exists a monomial ideal $L$ having the maximal graded Betti numbers among graded ideals $J$ which have the same Hilbert function as $I$ and which satisfy $\mathrm{proj dim}(J) \leq p$ and $\mathrm{reg}(J) \leq d$. We also prove the same fact for squarefree monomial ideals. The main methods for proofs are generic initial ideals and combinatorics on strongly stable ideals.

Rigidity of linear strands and generic initial ideals

Let $K$ be a field, $S$ a polynomial ring and $E$ an exterior algebra over $K$, both in a finite set of variables. We study rigidity properties of the graded Betti numbers of graded ideals in $S$ and $E$ when passing to their generic initial ideals. First, we prove that if the graded Betti numbers $β_{ii+k}^S(S/I)=β_{ii+k}^S(S/\Gin(I))$ for some $i>1$ and $k \geq 0$, then $β_{qq+k}^S(S/I)= β_{qq+k}^S(S/\Gin(I))$ for all $q \geq i$, where $I\subset S$ is a graded ideal. Second, we show that if $β_{ii+k}^E(E/I)= β_{ii+k}^E(E/\Gin(I))$ for some $i>1$ and $k \geq 0$, then $β_{qq+k}^E(E/I)= β_{qq+k}^E(E/\Gin(I))$ for all $q \geq 1$, where $I\subset E$ is a graded ideal. In addition, it will be shown that the graded Betti numbers $β_{ii+k}^R(R/I)= β_{ii+k}^R(R/\Gin(I))$ for all $i \geq 1$ if and only if $I_{< k >}$ and $I_{< k+1 >}$ have a linear resolution. Here $I_{< d >}$ is the ideal generated by all homogeneous elements in $I$ of degree $d$, and $R$ can be either the polynomial ring or the exterior algebra.

Generic initial ideals and exterior algebraic shifting of the join of simplicial complexes

In this paper, the relation between algebraic shifting and join which was conjectured by Eran Nevo will be proved. Let $σ$ and $τ$ be simplicial complexes and $σ* τ$ their join. Let $J_σ$ be the exterior face ideal of $σ$ and $Δ(σ)$ the exterior algebraic shifted complex of $σ$. Assume that $σ* τ$ is a simplicial complex on $[n]=\{1,2,...,n\}$. For any $d$-subset $S \subset [n]$, let $m_{\preceq_{rev} S}(σ)$ denote the number of $d$-subsets $R \in σ$ which is equal to or smaller than $S$ w.r.t. the reverse lexicographic order. We will prove that $m_{\preceq_{rev} S}(Δ({σ* τ}))\geq m_{\preceq_{rev} S}(Δ({Δ(σ)} * {Δ(τ)}))$ for all $S \subset [n]$. To prove this fact, we also prove that $m_{\preceq_{rev} S}(Δ(σ))\geq m_{\preceq_{rev} S}(Δ({Δ_ϕ(σ)}))$ for all $S\subset [n]$ and for all non-singular matrices $ϕ$, where $Δ_ϕ(σ)$ is the simplicial complex defined by $J_{Δ_ϕ(σ)}=\init(ϕ(J_σ))$.

Monomial ideals arising from flag complexes whose generic initial ideals do not depend on term orders

We will study monomial ideals $I$ in the exterior algebra as well as in the polynomial ring whose generic initial ideal is constant for all term orders up to permutations of variables. First, in the exterior algebra, we determine all graphs and all flag complexes whose exterior face ideal satisfies the above condition. Second, in the polynomial ring, it will be shown that the generic initial ideal $\gin_σ(I(G))$ of the edge ideal $I(G)$ of a graph $G$ is constant for all term orders $σ$ up to permutations of variables if and only if $G$ is a complete bipartite graph.

Algebraic shifting of finite graphs

In the present paper, exterior algebraic shifting and symmetric algebraic shifting of bipartite graphs and chordal graphs are studied. First, we will determine the symmetric algebraic shifted graph of complete bipartite graphs. It turns out that, for $a>3$ and $b>3$, the exterior algebraic shifted graph of the complete bipartite graph $K_{a,b}$ of size $a,b$ is different from the symmetric algebraic shifted graph of $K_{a,b}$. Second, we will show that the exterior algebraic shifted graph of any chordal graph $G$ is coincident with the symmetric algebraic shifted graph of $G$.

Gin and Lex of certain monomial ideals

Let $A = K[x_1, ..., x_n]$ denote the polynomial ring in $n$ variables over a field $K$ of characteristic 0 with each $°x_i = 1$. Given arbitrary integers $i$ and $j$ with $2 \leq i \leq n$ and $3 \leq j \leq n$, we will construct a monomial ideal $I \subset A$ such that (i) $β_k(I) < β_k(\Gin(I))$ for all $k < i$, (ii) $β_i(I) = β_i(\Gin(I))$, (iii) $β_\ell(\Gin(I)) < β_\ell(\Lex(I))$ for all $\ell < j$ and (iv) $β_j(\Gin(I)) = β_j(\Lex(I))$, where $\Gin(I)$ is the generic initial ideal of $I$ with respect to the reverse lexicographic order induced by $x_1 > >... > x_n$ and where $\Lex(I)$ is the lexsegment ideal with the same Hilbert function as $I$.

Gotzmann monomial ideals

A Gotzmann monomial ideal of the polynomial ring is a monomial ideal which is generated in one degree and which satisfies Gotzmann's persistence theorem. A subset $V$ is said to be a Gotzmann subset if the ideal generated by $V$ is a Gotzmann monomial ideal. In the present paper, we find all integers $a>0$ such that every Gotzmann subset $V$ with $|V|=a$ is lexsegment (up to the permutation of the variables). In addition, we classify all Gotzmann subsets of $K[x_1,x_2,x_3]$.

A combinatorial proof of Gotzmann's persistence theorem for monomial ideals

Gotzmann proved the persistence for minimal growth for ideals. His theorem is called Gotzmann's persistence theorem. In this paper, based on the combinatorics on binomial coefficients, a simple combinatorial proof of Gotzmann's persistence theorem in the special case of monomial ideals is given.
