Unconventional proximity effect and inverse spin-switch behavior in a model manganite-cuprate-manganite trilayer system

The proximity effect in a model manganite-cuprate system is investigated theoretically. We consider a situation in which spin-polarized electrons in manganite layers antiferromagnetically couple with electrons in cuprate layers as observed experimentally. The effect of the interfacial magnetic coupling is found to be much stronger than the injection of spin-polarized electrons into the cuprate region. As a result, the superconducting transition temperature depends on the thickness of the cuprate layer significantly. Since the magnetic coupling creates {\em negative} spin polarization, an applied magnetic field and the negative polarization compete resulting in the inverse spin-switch behavior where the superconducting transition temperature is increased by applying a magnetic field.

Magnetic interaction at an interface between manganite and other transition metal oxides

A general consideration is presented for the magnetic interaction at an interface between a perovskite manganite and other transition metal oxides. The latter is specified by the electron number $n$ in the $d_{3z^2-r^2}$ level as $(d_{3z^2-r^2})^n$. Based on the molecular orbitals formed at the interface and the generalized Hund's rule, the sign of the magnetic interaction is rather uniquely determined. The exception is when the $d_{3z^2-r^2}$ orbital is stabilized in the interfacial manganite layer neighboring to a $(d_{3z^2-r^2})^1$ or $(d_{3z^2-r^2})^2$ system. In this case, the magnetic interaction is sensitive to the occupancy of the Mn $d_{3z^2-r2}$ orbital. It is also shown that the magnetic interaction between the interfacial Mn layer and the bulk region can be changed. Manganite-based heterostructures thus show a rich magnetic behavior. We also present how to generalize the argument including $t_{2g}$ orbitals.

Microscopic Inhomogeneity and Superconducting Properties of a Two-dimensional Hubbard Model for High-$T_c$ Cuprate

Recent scanning tunneling microscopy measurements on cuprate superconductors have revealed remarkable spatial inhomogeneities in the single-particle energy gap. Using cellular dynamical mean-field theory, we study the zero temperature superconducting properties of a single-band Hubbard model with a spatial modulation of the electron density. We find that the inhomogeneity in the electronic structure results in a substantial spatial variation in the superconducting order parameter and single-particle energy gap, reminiscent of the experimental results. In particular, we find that the order parameter and gap amplitudes in the hole-rich regions are significantly enhanced over the corresponding quantities in a uniform system, if the hole-rich regions are embedded in regions with smaller hole density.

Non-Collinear Magnetic Phases of a Triangular-Lattice Antiferromagnet and Doped CuFeO$_2$

We obtain the non-collinear ground states of a triangular-lattice antiferromagnet with exchange interactions up to third nearest neighbors as a function of the single-ion anisotropy $D$. At a critical value of $D$, the collinear $\uudd $ phase transforms into a complex non-collinear phase with odd-order harmonics of the fundamental ordering wavevector $\vQ $. The observed elastic peaks at $2π\vx -\vQ $ in both Al- and Ga- doped CuFeO$_2$ are explained by a "scalene" distortion of the triangular lattice produced by the repulsion of neighboring oxygen atoms.

Surface magnetic phase transition of the double-exchange ferromagnet: Schwinger-boson mean-field study

The surface magnetic phase transition of a double-exchange model for metallic manganites is studied using a Schwinger-boson mean-field method. About three unit-cells wide surface layers are identified. The magnetic moment in these layers decreases more rapidly than that in the bulk when the temperature is increased. This behavior is consistent with experimental observations. We also discuss the implication of this behavior on the tunneling magnetoresistance effect using manganites and possible improvement of the magnetoresistance effect near the bulk Curie temperature.

Giant Antiferromagnetically Coupled Moments in a Molecule-Based Magnet with Interpenetrating Lattices

The molecule-based magnet [Ru$_2$(O$_2$CMe)$_4$]$_3$[Cr(CN)$_6$] contains two weakly-coupled, interpenetrating sublattices in a body-centered cubic structure. Although the field-dependent magnetization indicates a metamagnetic transition from an antiferromagnet to a paramagnet, the hysteresis loop also exhibits a substantial magnetic remanance and coercive field uncharacteristic of a typical metamagnet. We demonstrate that this material behaves like two giant moments with a weak antiferromagnetic coupling and a large energy barrier between the orientations of each moment. Because the sublattice moments only weakly depend on field in the transition region, the magnetic correlation length can be directly estimated from the magnetization.

Enhanced Superconductivity in Superlattices of High-$T_c$ Cuprates

The electronic properties of multilayers of strongly correlated models for cuprate superconductors are investigated using cluster dynamical mean-field techniques. We focus on combinations of underdoped and overdoped layers and find that the superconducting order parameter in the overdoped layers is enhanced by the proximity effect of the strong pairing scale originating from the underdoped layers. The enhanced order parameter can even exceed the maximum value in uniform systems. This behavior is well reproduced in slave-boson mean-field calculations which also find higher transition temperatures than in the uniform system.

Nonlinear transport through two-terminal strongly-correlated heterostructures: A dynamical-mean-field approach

The dynamical-mean-field method is applied to investigate the transport properties of heterostructures consisting of a strongly-correlated electron system connected to metallic leads. The spectral function inside the correlated region is sensitive to the change of the interaction strength and bias voltage. Because of this sensitivity, current vs voltage characteristics of such heterostructures are rather nonlinear regardless of the detail of the potential profile inside the correlated region. The electronic properties such as the double occupancy are also changed by the bias voltage.

Jahn-Teller Distortion in Bimetallic Oxalates

A C$_3$-symmetric crystal-field potential in the Fe(II)Fe(III) bimetallic oxalates splits the L=2 Fe(II) multiplet into two doublets and a singlet. In compounds that exhibit magnetic compensation, one of the doublets was predicted to lie lowest in energy and carry a non-quenched orbital angular momentum $\pm \ld $, where $\ld $ exceeds a threshold value. In a range of $\ld $, a Jahn-Teller (JT) distortion increases the energy splitting of the low-lying doublet and breaks the C$_3$ symmetry of the bimetallic planes around the ferrimagnetic transition temperature. At low temperatures, the JT distortion disappears in compounds that display magnetic compensation due to the competition with the spin-orbit coupling. A comparison with recent measurements provides strong evidence for this re-entrant, low-temperature JT transition and a prediction for the normal, high-temperature JT transition. The size of the JT distortion is estimated using first-principles calculations, which suggest that the long-range ordering of smaller, non-C$_3$-symmetric organic cations can eliminate magnetic compensation.

Nonequilibrium transport and optical properties of model metal--Mott-insulator--metal heterostructures

Electronic properties of heterostructures in which a finite number of Mott-insulator layers are sandwiched by semi-infinite metallic leads are investigated by using the dynamical-mean-field method combined with the Keldysh Green's function technique to account for the finite bias voltage between the leads. Current across the junction is computed as a function of bias voltage. Electron spectral functions in the interacting region are shown to evolve by an applied bias voltage. This effect is measurable by photoemission spectroscopy and scanning tunneling microscopy. Further predictions are made for the optical conductivity under a bias voltage as a possible tool to detect a deformed density of states. A general discussion of correlated-electron based heterostructures and future prospect is given.

Fictive Impurity Approach to Dynamical Mean Field Theory: a Strong-Coupling Investigation

Quantum Monte Carlo and semiclassical methods are used to solve two and four site cluster dynamical mean field approximations to the square lattice Hubbard model at half filling and strong coupling. The energy, spin correlation function, phase boundary and electron spectral function are computed and compared to available exact results. The comparision permits a quantitative assessment of the ability of the different methods to capture the effects of intersite spin correlations. Two real space methods and one momentum space representation are investigated. One of the two real space methods is found to be significantly worse: in it, convergence to the correct results is found to be slow and, for the spectral function, nonuniform in frequency, with unphysical midgap states appearing. Analytical arguments are presented showing that the discrepancy arises because the method does not respect the pole structure of the self energy of the insulator. Of the other two methods, the momentum space representation is found to provide the better approximation to the intersite terms in the energy but neither approximation is particularly acccurate and the convergence of the momentum space method is not uniform. A few remarks on numerical methods are made.

Lattice relaxation, electronic screening, and spin and orbital phase diagram of LaTiO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ superlattices

The effects of lattice relaxation in LaTiO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ superlattices are investigated using a combination of LDA$+U$ density functional theory, and Hartree-Fock effective Hamiltonian calculations. We find noticeable ($\sim 0.1$--0.2 Å) distortions of the TiO$_6$ octahedra in the near-La region. The resulting screening changes the Ti $d$-electron density substantially. Tight-binding fits to the relaxed-lattice band structure, combined with Hartree-Fock calculations of the resulting model, reveal a novel phase with $xy$ orbital order, which does not occur in bulk LaTiO$_3$, or in the hypothetical unrelaxed structure.

Dynamical Mean Field Study of Model Double-Exchange Superlattices

A theoretical study of [001] "double exchange" superlattices is presented. The superlattice is defined in terms of an $AB$O$_3$ perovskite crystal. Itinerant electrons hop among the B sites according to a nearest-neighbor tight binding model and are coupled to classical "core spins". The $A$ sites contain ionic charges arranged to form an [001] superlattice which forces a spatial variation of the mobile electron charge on the $B$ sites. The double-exchange interaction is treated by the dynamical mean field approximation, while the long range Coulomb interaction is taken into account by the Hartree approximation. We find the crucial parameter is the Coulomb screening length. Different types of phases are distinguished and the interfaces between them classified.

Interface ordering and phase competition in a model Mott-insulator--band-insulator heterostructure

The phase diagram of model Mott-insulator--band-insulator heterostructures is studied using the semiclassical approximation to the dynamical-mean-field method as a function of thickness, coupling constant, and charge confinement. An interface-stabilized ferromagnetic phase is found, allow the study of its competition and possible coexistence with the antiferromagnetic order characteristic of the bulk Mott insulator.

Electronic reconstruction in correlated electron heterostructures

Electronic phase behavior in correlated-electron systems is a fundamental problem of condensed matter physics. We argue here that the change in the phase behavior near the surface and interface, i.e., {\em electronic reconstruction}, is the fundamental issue of the correlated-electron surface or interface science. Beyond its importance to basic science, understanding of this behavior is crucial for potential devices exploiting the novel properties of the correlated systems. % We present a general overview of the field, and then illustrate the general concepts by theoretical studies of the model heterostructures comprised of a Mott-insulator and a band-insulator, which show that spin (and orbital) orderings in thin heterostructures are generically different from the bulk and that the interface region, about three-unit-cell wide, is always metallic, demonstrating that {\em electronic reconstruction} generally occurs. % Predictions for photoemission experiments are made to show how the electronic properties change as a function of position, and the magnetic phase diagram is determined as a function of temperature, number of layers, and interaction strength. Future directions for research are also discussed.

Benchmarking a semiclassical impurity solver for dynamical-mean-field theory: self-energies and magnetic transitions of the single-orbital Hubbard model

An investigation is presented of the utility of semiclassical approximations for solving the quantum-impurity problems arising in the dynamical-mean-field approach to the correlated-electron models. The method is based on performing a exact numerical integral over the zero-Matsubara-frequency component of the spin part of a continuous Hubbard-Stratonovich field, along with a spin-field-dependent steepest descents treatment of the charge part. We test this method by applying it to one or two site approximations to the single band Hubbard model with different band structures, and comparing the results to quantum Monte-Carlo and simplified exact diagonalization calculations. The resulting electron self-energies, densities of states and magnetic transition temperatures show reasonable agreement with the quantum Monte-Carlo simulation over wide parameter ranges, suggesting that the semiclassical method is useful for obtaining a reasonable picture of the physics in situations where other techniques are too expensive.

Spatial inhomogeneity and strong correlation physics: a dynamical mean field study of a model Mott-insulator/band-insulator heterostructure

We use the dynamical mean field method to investigate electronic properties of heterostructures in which finite number of Mott-insulator layers are embedded in a spatially infinite band-insulator. The evolution of the correlation effects with the number of Mott insulating layers and with position in the heterostructure is determined, and the optical conductivity is computed. It is shown that the heterostructures are generally metallic, with moderately renormalized bands of quasiparticles appearing at the interface between the correlated and uncorrelated regions.

Theory of Mott insulator/band insulator heterostructure

A theory of heterostructures comprised of LaTiO$_3$ (a Mott insulator) and SrTiO$_3$ (a band insulator) is presented. The band structure of the Ti $d$% -electrons is treated with a nearest neighbor tight-binding approximation; the electric fields arising from the La$^{3+}$/Sr$^{2+}$ charge difference and the carriers are treated within a Hartree approximation; and the on-site interactions are treated by unrestricted Hartree-Fock. The phase diagram as a function of interaction strength and layer number is determined and predictions are made for optical conductivity experiments. A note worthy finding is that the edges of the heterostructure are generally metallic.
