SHAPE: cosmology with cluster halo intrinsic alignments from subhalo distributions

Galaxy clusters trace the most massive dark matter haloes, whose shapes and orientations reflect the imprint of the cosmic large-scale tidal field. This paper introduces the Subhalo-based Halo Alignment and Projected Ellipticity (SHAPE) technique, which reconstructs cluster halo shapes from the projected distribution of subhaloes, providing a novel approach to investigate intrinsic alignment (IA) correlations between cluster halo shapes and the surrounding density field. We measure halo shapes and orientations using different line-of-sight projection depths and find that, with modest projection depths, the shapes and orientations recovered by SHAPE show good agreement with those measured directly from the simulation particles. Using these SHAPE-derived shapes, we compute IA correlation functions from N-body simulations in both real and redshift space. The IA correlation multipoles exhibit features consistent with baryon acoustic oscillations around 100 Mpc/h and show redshift-space distortion (RSD) effects that agree well with predictions from a non-linear alignment model incorporating RSD. We further demonstrate that the structure growth rate parameter can be robustly estimated without bias from these IA correlations, providing a new avenue for cosmological parameter estimation. Expanding the IA correlations in an associated Legendre basis yields results consistent with those from the standard Legendre expansion, but with improved statistical significance. These results suggest that SHAPE may enhance cosmological parameter constraints in future galaxy surveys.

Inner structure of cold and warm dark matter halos from particle dynamics

Using the number of apocenter passages $p$ and the radial action $J_r$ of each particle, we characterize the phase-space structure within the multi-stream regions of cold and warm dark matter halos in cosmological $N$-body simulations. Building on previous work by Enomoto et al. (2024), we analyze the radial density profiles of particles classified by $p$ and $J_r$. We find that the profiles consistently follow a double power-law structure, independent of the dark matter model or halo mass. The inner profile exhibits a $ρ\propto r^{-1}$ behavior, which is consistent with previous studies. Notably, this characteristics persist across both classification schemes. In contrast, the outer power-law profiles display distinct behaviors depending on the classification. While particles classified by $p$ exhibit a steeper slope, ranging from $-6$ to $-8$, those classified by $J_r$ follow a common slope of approximately $-3.5$. Overall, the amplitude of the double power-law profiles varies between simulations for different dark matter models, but this variation can be attributed to statistical differences in the concentration of halos across the models.

Uniqueness and multiple existence of positive radial solutions of the Brezis-Nirenberg Problem on annular domains in ${\Bbb S}^{3}$

The uniqueness and multiple existence of positive radial solutions to the Brezis-Nirenberg problem on a domain in the 3-dimensional unit sphere ${\mathbb S}^3$ \begin{equation*} \left\{ \begin{aligned} Δ_{{\mathbb S}^3}U -λU + U^p&=0,\, U>0 && \text{in $Ω_{θ_1,θ_2}$,}\\ U &= 0&&\text{on $\partial Ω_{θ_1,θ_2}$,} \end{aligned} \right. \end{equation*} for $-λ_{1}<λ\leq 1$ are shown, where $Δ_{{\mathbb S}^3}$ is the Laplace-Beltrami operator, $λ_{1}$ is the first eigenvalue of $-Δ_{{\mathbb S}^3}$ and $Ω_{θ_1,θ_2}$ is an annular domain in ${\mathbb S}^3$: whose great circle distance (geodesic distance) from $(0,0,0,1)$ is greater than $θ_1$ and less than $θ_2$. A solution is said to be radial if it depends only on this geodesic distance. It is proved that the number of positive radial solutions of the problem changes with respect to the exponent $p$ and parameter $λ$ when $θ_1=\varepsilon$, $θ_2=π-\varepsilon$ and $0<\varepsilon$ is sufficiently small.

The Ni isotopic composition of Ryugu reveals a common accretion region for carbonaceous chondrites

The isotopic compositions of samples returned from Cb-type asteroid Ryugu and Ivuna-type (CI) chondrites are distinct from other carbonaceous chondrites, which has led to the suggestion that Ryugu and CI chondrites formed in a different region of the accretion disk, possibly around the orbits of Uranus and Neptune. We show that, like for Fe, Ryugu and CI chondrites also have indistinguishable Ni isotope anomalies, which differ from those of other carbonaceous chondrites. We propose that this unique Fe and Ni isotopic composition reflects different accretion efficiencies of small FeNi metal grains among the carbonaceous chondrite parent bodies. The CI chondrites incorporated these grains more efficiently, possibly because they formed at the end of the disk's lifetime, when planetesimal formation was also triggered by photoevaporation of the disk. Isotopic variations among carbonaceous chondrites may thus reflect fractionation of distinct dust components from a common reservoir, implying CI chondrites and Ryugu may have formed in the same region of the accretion disk as other carbonaceous chondrites.

Microscale Hydrogen, Carbon, and Nitrogen Isotopic Diversity of Organic Matter in Asteroid Ryugu

We report the H, C, and N isotopic compositions of microscale (0.2 to 2$μ$m) organic matter in samples of asteroid Ryugu and the Orgueil CI carbonaceous chondrite. Three regolith particles of asteroid Ryugu, returned by the Hayabusa2 spacecraft, and several fragments of Orgueil were analyzed by NanoSIMS isotopic imaging. The isotopic distributions of the Ryugu samples from two different collection spots are closely similar to each other and to the Orgueil samples, strengthening the proposed Ryugu-CI chondrite connection. Most individual sub-$μ$m organic grains have isotopic compositions within error of bulk values, but 2-8% of them are outliers exhibiting large isotopic enrichments or depletions in D, $^{15}$N, and/or $^{13}$C. The H, C and N isotopic compositions of the outliers are not correlated with each other: while some C-rich grains are both D- and $^{15}$N-enriched, many are enriched or depleted in one or the other system. This most likely points to a diversity in isotopic fractionation pathways and thus diversity in the local formation environments for the individual outlier grains. The observation of a relatively small population of isotopic outlier grains can be explained either by escape from nebular and/or parent body homogenization of carbonaceous precursor material or addition of later isotopic outlier grains. The strong chemical similarity of isotopically typical and isotopically outlying grains, as reflected by synchrotron x-ray absorption spectra, suggests a genetic connection and thus favors the former, homogenization scenario. However, the fact that even the least altered meteorites show the same pattern of a small population of outliers on top of a larger population of homogenized grains indicates that some or most of the homogenization occurred prior to accretion of the macromolecular organic grains into asteroidal parent bodies.

Exploring the baryonic effect signature in the Hyper Suprime-Cam Year 3 cosmic shear two-point correlations on small scales: the $S_8$ tension remains present

The baryonic feedback effect is considered as a possible solution to the so-called $S_8$ tension indicated in cosmic shear cosmology. The baryonic effect is more significant on smaller scales, and affects the cosmic shear two-point correlation functions (2PCFs) with different scale- and redshift-dependencies from those of the cosmological parameters. In this paper, we use the Hyper Suprime-Cam Year 3 (HSC-Y3) data to measure the cosmic shear 2PCFs ($ξ_{\pm}$) down to 0.28 arcminutes, taking full advantage of the high number density of source galaxies in the deep HSC data, to explore a possible signature of the baryonic effect. While the published HSC analysis used the cosmic shear 2PCFs on angular scales, which are sensitive to the matter power spectrum at $k\lesssim 1~h{\rm Mpc}^{-1}$, the smaller scale HSC cosmic shear signal allows us to probe the signature of matter power spectrum up to $k\simeq 20~h{\rm Mpc}^{-1}$. Using the accurate emulator of the nonlinear matter power spectrum, DarkEmulator2, we show that the dark matter-only model can provide an acceptable fit to the HSC-Y3 2PCFs down to the smallest scales. In other words, we do not find any clear signature of the baryonic effects or do not find a systematic shift in the $S_8$ value with the inclusion of the smaller-scale information as would be expected if the baryonic effect is significant. Alternatively, we use a flexible 6-parameter model of the baryonic effects, which can lead to both enhancement and suppression in the matter power spectrum compared to the dark matter-only model, to perform the parameter inference of the HSC-Y3 2PCFs. We find that the small-scale HSC data allow only a fractional suppression of up to 5 percent in the matter power spectrum at $k\sim 1~h{\rm Mpc}^{-1}$, which is not sufficient to reconcile the $S_8$ tension.

Model-Checking in the Loop Model-Based Testing for Automotive Operating Systems

While vehicles have primarily been controlled through mechanical means in years past, an increasing number of embedded control systems are being installed and used, keeping pace with advances in electronic control technology and performance. Automotive systems consist of multiple components developed by a range of vendors. To accelerate developments in embedded control systems, industrial standards such as AUTOSAR are being defined for automotive systems, including the design of operating system and middleware technologies. Crucial to ensuring the safety of automotive systems, the operating system is foundational software on which many automotive applications are executed. In this paper, we propose an integrated model-based method for verifying automotive operating systems; our method is called Model-Checking in the Loop Model-Based Testing (MCIL-MBT). In MCIL-MBT, we create a model that formalizes specifications of automotive operating systems and verifies the specifications via model-checking. Next, we conduct model-based testing with the verified model to ensure that a specific operating system implementation conforms to the model. These verification and testing stages are iterated over until no flaws are detected. Our method has already been introduced to an automotive system supplier and an operating system vendor. Through our approach, we successfully identified flaws that were not detected by conventional review and testing methods.

Characterization of the MASCOT landing area by Hayabusa2

Context. After landing on C-type asteroid Ryugu, MASCOT imaged brightly colored, submillimeter-sized inclusions in a small rock. Hayabusa2 successfully returned a sample of small particles from the surface of Ryugu, but none of these appear to harbor such inclusions. The samples are considered representative of Ryugu. Aims. To understand the apparent discrepancy between MASCOT observations and Ryugu samples, we assess whether the MASCOT landing site, and the rock by implication, is perhaps atypical for Ryugu. Methods. We analyzed observations of the MASCOT landing area acquired by three instruments on board Hayabusa2: a camera (ONC), a near-infrared spectrometer (NIRS3), and a thermal infrared imager (TIR). We compared the landing area properties thus retrieved with those of the average Ryugu surface. Results. We selected several areas and landforms in the landing area for analysis: a small crater, a collection of smooth rocks, and the landing site itself. The crater is relatively blue and the rocks are relatively red. The spectral and thermophysical properties of the landing site are very close to those of the average Ryugu surface. The spectral properties of the MASCOT rock are probably close to average, but its thermal inertia may be somewhat higher. Conclusions. The MASCOT rock can also be considered representative of Ryugu. Some of the submillimeter-sized particles in the returned samples stand out because of their atypical spectral properties. Such particles may be present as inclusions in the MASCOT rock.

The spatial distribution of impact craters on Ryugu

Asteroid 162173 Ryugu has numerous craters. The initial measurement of impact craters on Ryugu, by Sugita et al. (2019), is based on Hayabusa2 ONC images obtained during the first month after the arrival of Hayabusa2 in June 2018. Utilizing new images taken until February 2019, we constructed a global impact crater catalogue of Ryugu, which includes all craters larger than 20 m in diameter on the surface of Ryugu. As a result, we identified 77 craters on the surface of Ryugu. Ryugu shows variation in crater density which cannot be explained by the randomness of cratering; there are more craters at lower latitudes and fewer at higher latitudes, and fewer craters in the western bulge (160 E - 290 E) than in the region around the meridian (300 E - 30 E). This variation implies a complicated geologic history for Ryugu. It seems that the longitudinal variation in crater density simply indicates variation in the crater ages; the cratered terrain around the meridian seems to be geologically old while the western bulge is relatively young. The latitudinal variation in crater density suggests that the equatorial ridge of Ryugu is a geologically old structure; however, this could be alternatively explained by a collision with many fission fragments during a short rotational period of Ryugu in the past.

Floquet-Landau-Zener interferometry: Usefulness of the Floquet theory in pulse-laser-driven systems

We develop the Landau-Zener transfer matrix theory for the instantaneous Floquet states (IFSs) for quantum systems driven by strong pulse lasers. Applying this theory to the pulse excitation probability in two-level quantum systems, we show unexpectedly good quantitative agreements for few-cycle pulses. This approach enables us to qualitatively understand the probability's peculiar behaviors as quantum path interference between IFSs. We also study the pulse-width dependence, finding that this Floquet-state interpretation remains useful for shorter pulses down to 2-cycle ones in the present model. These results imply that the Floquet theory is meaningful in experimental few-cycle lasers if applied appropriately in the sense of IFSs.

A 400 Trillion-Grid Vlasov Simulation on Fugaku Supercomputer: Large-Scale Distribution of Cosmic Relic Neutrinos in a Six-dimensional Phase Space

We report a Vlasov simulation of cosmic relic neutrinos combined with N-body simulation of cold dark matter in the context of large-scale structure formation in the Universe performed on Fugaku supercomputer. Gravitational dynamics of the neutrinos is followed, for the first time, by directly integrating the Vlasov equation in a six-dimensional phase space. Our largest simulation combines the Vlasov simulation on 400 trillion grids and 330 billion-body calculations in a self-consistent manner, and reproduces accurately the nonlinear dynamics of neutrinos in the Universe. The novel high-order Vlasov solver is optimized by combining an array of state-of-the-art numerical schemes and fully utilizing the SIMD instructions on the A64FX processors. Time-To-Solution of our simulation is an order of magnitude shorter than the largest N-body simulations. The performance scales excellently with up to 147,456 nodes (7 million CPU cores) on Fugaku; the weak and strong scaling efficiencies are 82% - 96% and 82% - 93%, respectively.

Imprint of anisotropic primordial non-Gaussianity on halo intrinsic alignments in simulations

Using $N$-body simulations of cosmological large-scale structure formation, for the first time, we show that the anisotropic primordial non-Gaussianity (PNG) causes a scale-dependent modification, given by $1/k^2$ at small $k$ limit, in the three-dimensional power spectra of halo shapes (intrinsic alignments), whilst the conventional power spectrum of halo number density field remains unaffected. We discuss that wide-area imaging and spectrocopic surveys observing the same region of the sky allow us to constrain the quadrupole PNG coefficient $f_{\rm NL}^{s=2}$ at a precision comparable with or better than that of the cosmic microwave background.

Coherent single-spin electron resonance spectroscopy manifested at an exceptional-point singularity in a doped polyacetylene

Spin-dependent charge transfer decay in an alkali atom doped polyacetylene is studied in terms of the complex spectral analysis, revealing the single-spin Zeeman splitting influenced by the spin-orbit interaction. Nonhermitian effective Hamiltonian has been derived from the total system hermitian Hamiltonian using Brillouin-Wigner-Feshbach projection method, where the microscopic spin-dependent dissipation effect is correctly incorporated in the energy-dependent self-energy. Since the present method maintains the dynamical and chiral symmetries of the total system, we discovered two types of exceptional point (EP) singularities in a unified perspective: the EP surface and EP ring are attributed to the dynamical and chiral symmetry breaking, respectively. We have revealed that the coherent single-spin electron resonance (SSESR) spectrum reflects the complex eigenenergy spectrum of the system. We have formulated the SSESR spectrum in terms of the nonlinear response function in the Liouville-space pathway approach, where we have constructed the Liouville space basis using the complex eigenstates of the total Hamiltonian. We have calculated the one- and two-dimensional Fourier transform SSESR (1DFT and 2DFT) spectra reflecting the spin-relaxation dynamics at the donor site. While the 1DFT SSESR spectrum reflects the complex eigenenergy spectrum, the 2DFT gives detailed information on the quantum coherence in the spin-relaxation dynamics as a cross-correlation between the two frequencies. We found a giant response of the coherent SSESR around the EP ring singularity due to the vanishing normalization factors at the EP ring and the resonance effect. We have discovered that the giant response is much larger in magnitudes in the 2DFT spectrum than in the 1DFT spectrum, which promises the 2DFT SSESR a useful tool to observe the single-spin response in a molecule.

Cosmological Vlasov-Poisson Simulations of Structure Formation with Relic Neutrinos: Nonlinear Clustering and the Neutrino Mass

We present the results of cosmological simulations of large-scale structure formation with massive neutrinos. The phase-space distribution of the cosmic relic neutrinos is followed, for the first time, by directly integrating the six-dimensional Vlasov-Poisson equations. Our novel approach allows us to represent free streaming and clustering of neutrinos, and their gravitational interaction with cold dark matter accurately. We thus obtain solutions for the collisionless dynamics independent of conventional N-body methods. We perform a suite of hybrid N-body/Vlasov simulations with varying the neutrino mass, and systematically examine the dynamical effects of massive neutrinos on large-scale structure formation. Our simulations show characteristic large-scale clustering of the neutrinos and their coherent streaming motions relative to dark matter. The effective local neutrino "temperature" around massive galaxy clusters varies by several percent with respect to the cosmic mean; the neutrinos in clusters can be hotter or colder depending on the neutrino mass. We study a number of statistics of the large-scale structure and of dark matter halos in comparison with those obtained by N-body simulations and/or by perturbation theory. Our simulations mark an important milestone in numerical cosmology, and pave a new way to study cosmic structure formation with massive neutrinos.

Quixo Is Solved

Quixo is a two-player game played on a 5$\times$5 grid where the players try to align five identical symbols. Specifics of the game require the usage of novel techniques. Using a combination of value iteration and backward induction, we propose the first complete analysis of the game. We describe memory-efficient data structures and algorithmic optimizations that make the game solvable within reasonable time and space constraints. Our main conclusion is that Quixo is a Draw game. The paper also contains the analysis of smaller boards and presents some interesting states extracted from our computations.

Dissipative dynamical Casimir effect in terms of the complex spectral analysis in the symplectic-Floquet space

Dynamical Casimir effect of the optomechanical cavity interacting with one-dimensional photonic crystal is theoretically investigated in terms of the complex spectral analysis of Floquet-Liouvillian in the symplectic-Floquet space. The quantum vacuum fluctuation of the intra-cavity mode is parametrically amplified by a periodic motion of the mirror boundary, and the amplified photons are spontaneously emitted to the photonic band. We have derived the non-Hermitian effective Floquet-Liouvillian from the total system Liouvillian with the use of the Brillouin-Wigner-Feshbach projection method in the symplectic-Floquet space. The microscopic dissipation process of the photon emission from the cavity has been taken into account by the energy-dependent self-energy. We have obtained the discrete eigenmodes of the total system by non-perturbatively solving the nonlinear complex eigenvalue problem of the effective Floquet-Liouvillian, where the eigenmodes are represented by the multimode Bogoliubov transformation. Based on the microscopic dynamics, the nonequilibrium stationary eigenmodes are identified as the eigenmodes with vanishing values of their imaginary parts due to the balance between the parametric amplification and dissipation effects. We have found that the nonlocal stationary eigenmode appears when the mixing between the cavity mode and the photonic band is caused by the indirect virtual transition, where the external field frequency to cause the DCE can be largely reduced by using the finite bandwidth photonic band.

Anomalous diffusion in Davydov quantum molecular chain model

We discuss anomalous relaxation processes in Davydov one-dimensional chain molecule that consists of an exciton and an acoustic phonon field as a thermal reservoir in the chain. We derive a kinetic equation for the exciton using the complex spectral representation of the Liouville-von Neumann operator. Due to the one-dimensionality, the momentum space separates into infinite sets of disjoint irreducible subspaces dynamically independent of one another. Hence, momentum relaxation occurs only within each subspace toward the Maxwell distribution. We obtain a hydrodynamic mode with transport coefficients, a sound velocity and a diffusion coefficient, defined in each subspace. Moreover, because the sound velocity has momentum dependence, phase mixing affects the broadening of the spatial distribution of the exciton in addition to the diffusion process. Due to the phase mixing the increase rate of the mean-square displacement of the exciton increases linearly with time and diverges in the long-time limit.
