Perfect state transfer in two dimensions and the bivariate dual-Hahn polynomials

A new solvable two-dimensional spin lattice model defined on a regular grid of triangular shape is proposed. The hopping amplitudes between sites are related to recurrence coefficients of certain bivariate dual-Hahn polynomials. For a specific choice of the parameters, perfect state transfer and fractional revival are shown to take place.

Generalization of the $ε$-BBS and the Schensted insertion algorithm

The $ε$-BBS is the family of solitonic cellular automata obtained via the ultradiscretization of the elementary Toda orbits, which is a parametrized family of integrable systems unifying the Toda equation and the relativistic Toda equation. In this paper, we derive the $ε$-BBS with many kinds of balls and give its conserved quantities by the Schensted insertion algorithm which is introduced in combinatorics. To prove this, we extend birational transformations of the continuous elementary Toda orbits to the discrete hungry elementary Toda orbits.

The single-indexed exceptional Krawtchouk polynomials

The Darboux transformations of Krawtchouk polynomials are investigated and all possible exceptional Krawtchouk polynomials obtainable from a single-step Darboux transformation are considered. The properties of these exceptional Krawtchouk polynomials including the Diophantine ones and the recurrence relations are obtained.

The ultradiscrete Toda lattice and the Smith normal form of bidiagonal matrices

The discrete Toda lattice preserves the eigenvalues of tridiagonal matrices, and convergence of dependent variables to the eigenvalues can be proved under appropriate conditions. We show that the ultradiscrete Toda lattice preserves invariant factors of a certain bidiagonal matrix over a principal ideal domain, and prove convergence of dependent variables to invariant factors using properties of box and ball system. Using this fact, we present a new method for computing the Smith normal form of a given matrix.

Two-parameter generalisations of Cauchy bi-orthogonal polynomials and integrable lattices

In this article, we consider the generalised two-parameter Cauchy two-matrix model and corresponding integrable lattice equation. It is shown that with parameters chosen as $1/k_i$ when $k_i\in\mathbb{Z}_{>0}$ ($i=1,\,2$), the average characteristic polynomials admit $(k_1+k_2+2)$-term recurrence relations, which provide us spectral problems for integrable lattices. The tau function is then given by the partition function of the generalised Cauchy two-matrix model as well as Gram determinant. The simplest example with exact solvability is demonstrated.

An algebraic description of the bispectrality of the biorthogonal rational functions of Hahn type

The biorthogonal rational functions of the ${_3}F_2$ type on the uniform grid provide the simplest example of rational functions with bispectrality properties that are similar to those of classical orthogonal polynomials. These properties are described by three difference operators $X,Y,Z$ which are tridiagonal with respect to three distinct bases of the relevant finite-dimensional space. The pairwise commutators of the operators $X,Y,Z$ generate a quadratic algebra which is akin to the algebras of Askey-Wilson type attached to hypergeometric polynomials.

Degenerate Sklyanin algebras, Askey-Wilson polynomials and Heun operators

The $q$-difference equation, the shift and the contiguity relations of the Askey-Wilson polynomials are cast in the framework of the three and four-dimensional degenerate Sklyanin algebras $\mathfrak{ska}_3$ and $\mathfrak{ska}_4$. It is shown that the $q$-para Racah polynomials corresponding to a non-conventional truncation of the Askey-Wilson polynomials form a basis for a finite-dimensional representation of $\mathfrak{ska}_4$. The first order Heun operators defined by a degree raising condition on polynomials are shown to form a five-dimensional vector space that encompasses $\mathfrak{ska}_4$. The most general quadratic expression in the five basis operators and such that it raises degrees by no more than one is identified with the Heun-Askey-Wilson operator.

The Heun-Racah and Heun-Bannai-Ito algebras

This paper introduces and studies the Heun-Racah and Heun-Bannai-Ito algebras abstractly and establishes the relation between these new algebraic structures and generalized Heun-type operators derived from the notion of algebraic Heun operators in the case of the Racah and Bannai-Ito algebras.

The rational Heun operator and Wilson biorthogonal functions

We consider the rational Heun operator defined as the most general second-order $q$-difference operator which sends any rational function of type $[(n-1)/n]$ to a rational function of type $[n/(n+1)]$. We shall take the poles to be located on the Askey-Wilson grid. It is shown that this operator is related to the one-dimensional degeneration of the Ruijsenaars-van Diejen Hamiltonians. The Wilson biorthogonal functions of type ${_{10}}Φ_9$ are found to be solutions of a generalized eigenvalue problem involving rational Heun operators of the special "classical" kind.

Dunkl-Supersymmetric Orthogonal functions associated with classical orthogonal polynomials

We consider the eigenvalue problem associated with the Dunkl-type differential operator (in which the reflection operator R is involved) L = dx R + v(x), (v(-x) = -v(x)), in the context of supersymmetric quantum mechanical models. By solving this eigenvalue problem with the help of known exactly solvable potentials, we construct several classes of functions satisfying certain orthogonality relations. We call them the Dunkl-supersymmetric (Dunkl-SUSY) orthogonal functions. These functions can be expressed in terms of the classical orthogonal polynomials (COPs). The key feature of these functions is that they appear by pairs, i.e., Qn(x) and Qn(-x) are both the eigenfunctions of L. A general formulation of the Dunkl-SUSY orthogonal polynomials is also presented.

The Heun-Askey-Wilson algebra and the Heun operator of Askey-Wilson type

The Heun-Askey-Wilson algebra is introduced through generators $\{\boX,\boW\}$ and relations. These relations can be understood as an extension of the usual Askey-Wilson ones. A central element is given, and a canonical form of the Heun-Askey-Wilson algebra is presented. A homomorphism from the Heun-Askey-Wilson algebra to the Askey-Wilson one is identified. On the vector space of the polynomials in the variable $x=z+z^{-1}$, the Heun operator of Askey-Wilson type realizing $\boW$ can be characterized as the most general second order $q$-difference operator in the variable $z$ that maps polynomials of degree $n$ in $x=z+z^{-1}$ into polynomials of degree $n+1$.

Quantum Walks on Graphs of the Ordered Hamming Scheme and Spin Networks

It is shown that the hopping of a single excitation on certain triangular spin lattices with non-uniform couplings and local magnetic fields can be described as the projections of quantum walks on graphs of the ordered Hamming scheme of depth 2. For some values of the parameters the models exhibit perfect state transfer between two summits of the lattice. Fractional revival is also observed in some instances. The bivariate Krawtchouk polynomials of the Tratnik type that form the eigenvalue matrices of the ordered Hamming scheme of depth 2 give the overlaps between the energy eigenstates and the occupational basis vectors.

Dynamics of the ultra-discrete Toda lattice via Pitman's transformation

By encoding configurations of the ultra-discrete Toda lattice by piecewise linear paths whose gradient alternates between $-1$ and $1$, we show that the dynamics of the system can be described in terms of a shifted version of Pitman's transformation (that is, reflection in the past maximum of the path encoding). This characterisation of the dynamics applies to finite configurations in both the non-periodic and periodic cases, and also admits an extension to infinite configurations. The latter point is important in the study of invariant measures for the ultra-discrete Toda lattice, which is pursued in a parallel work. We also describe a generalisation of the result to a continuous version of the box-ball system, whose states are described by continuous functions whose gradient may take values other than $\pm1$.

Spin Chains, Graphs and State Revival

Connections between the 1-excitation dynamics of spin lattices and quantum walks on graphs will be surveyed. Attention will be paid to perfect state transfer (PST) and fractional revival (FR) as well as to the role played by orthogonal polynomials in the study of these phenomena. Included is a discussion of the ordered Hamming scheme, its relation to multivariate Krawtchouk polynomials of the Tratnik type, the exploration of quantum walks on graphs of this association scheme and their projection to spin lattices with PST and FR.

Exceptional Bannai-Ito polynomials

We construct a non-trivial type of 1-step exceptional Bannai-Ito polynomials which satisfy discrete orthogonality by using a generalized Darboux transformation. In this generalization, the Darboux transformed Bannai-Ito operator is directly obtained through an intertwining relation. Moreover, the seed solution, which consists of a gauge factor and a polynomial part, plays an important role in the construction of these 1-step exceptional Bannai-Ito polynomials. And we show that there are 8 classes of gauge factors. We also provide the eigenfunctions of the corresponding multiple-step exceptional Bannai-Ito operator which can be expressed as a 3 x 3 determinant.

Dynamics of the box-ball system with random initial conditions via Pitman's transformation

The box-ball system (BBS), introduced by Takahashi and Satsuma in 1990, is a cellular automaton that exhibits solitonic behaviour. In this article, we study the BBS when started from a random two-sided infinite particle configuration. For such a model, Ferrari et al.\ recently showed the invariance in distribution of Bernoulli product measures with density strictly less than $\frac{1}{2}$, and gave a soliton decomposition for invariant measures more generally. We study the BBS dynamics using the transformation of a nearest neighbour path encoding of the particle configuration given by `reflection in the past maximum', which was famously shown by Pitman to connect Brownian motion and a three-dimensional Bessel process. We use this to characterise the set of configurations for which the dynamics are well-defined and reversible for all times. We give simple sufficient conditions for random initial conditions to be invariant in distribution under the BBS dynamics, which we check in several natural examples, and also investigate the ergodicity of the relevant transformation. Furthermore, we analyse various probabilistic properties of the BBS that are commonly studied for interacting particle systems, such as the asymptotic behavior of the integrated current of particles and of a tagged particle. Finally, for Bernoulli product measures with parameter $p\uparrow\frac12$ (which may be considered the `high density' regime), the path encoding we consider has a natural scaling limit, which motivates the introduction of a new continuous version of the BBS that we believe will be of independent interest as a dynamical system.

Generating functions for the Bannai-Ito polynomials

The generating function of the Bannai-Ito polynomials is derived using the fact that these polynomials are known to be essentially the Racah or $6j$ coefficients of the $\mathfrak{osp}(1|2)$ Lie superalgebra. The derivation is carried in a realization of the recoupling problem in terms of three Dunkl oscillators.
