Shotgun crystal structure prediction using machine-learned formation energies

Stable or metastable crystal structures of assembled atoms can be predicted by finding the global or local minima of the energy surface within a broad space of atomic configurations. Generally, this requires repeated first-principles energy calculations, which is often impractical for large crystalline systems. Here, we present significant progress toward solving the crystal structure prediction problem: we performed noniterative, single-shot screening using a large library of virtually created crystal structures with a machine-learning energy predictor. This shotgun method (ShotgunCSP) has two key technical components: transfer learning for accurate energy prediction of pre-relaxed crystalline states, and two generative models based on element substitution and symmetry-restricted structure generation to produce promising and diverse crystal structures. First-principles calculations were performed only to generate the training samples and to refine a few selected pre-relaxed crystal structures. The ShotunCSP method is computationally less intensive than conventional methods and exhibits exceptional prediction accuracy, reaching 93.3% in benchmark tests with 90 different crystal structures.

Robust and efficient calculation of activation energy by automated path search and density functional theory

Because inorganic solid electrolytes are one of the key components for application to all-solid-state batteries, high-ionic-conductivity materials must be developed. Therefore, we propose a method of efficiently evaluating the activation energy of ionic diffusion by calculating a potential-energy surface (PES), searching for the optimal diffusion path by an algorithm developed using dynamic programming (DP), and calculating the corresponding activation energy by the nudged elastic band (NEB) method. Taking beta-Li3PS4 as an example, the activation energy of Li-ion diffusion was calculated as 0.43, 0.25, and 0.40 eV in the a-, b-, and c-axis directions, respectively, which is in good agreement with previously reported values. By comprehensively searching for the lowest energy path by PES-DP, the arbitrariness of the path selection can be eliminated, and the activation energy must only be calculated using the NEB method a few times, which greatly reduces the computational cost required for evaluating activation energy and enables the high-throughput screening of solid state electrolytes.

Anomalous Local Fermi Liquid in $f^{2}$-Singlet Configuration: Impurity Model for Heavy-Electron System UPt_3

It is shown by the Wilson numerical renormalization group method that a strongly correlated impurity with a crystalline-electric-field singlet ground state in the f^2-configuration exhibits an anomalous local Fermi liquid state in which the static magnetic susceptibility remains an uncorrelated value while the NMR relaxation rate is enhanced in proportion to the square of the mass enhancement factor. Namely, the Korringa-Shiba relation is apparently broken. This feature closely matches the anomalous behaviors observed in UPt_3, i.e., the coexistence of an unenhanced value of the Knight shift due to quasiparticles contribution (the decrease across the superconducting transition) and the enhanced relaxation rate of NMR. Such an anomalous Fermi liquid behavior suggests that the Fermi liquid corrections for the susceptibility are highly anisotropic.

Quasiparticle Interactions for f$^2$-Impurity Anderson Model with Crystalline-Electric-Field: Numerical Renormalization Group Study

The aspect of the quasiparticle interaction of a local Fermi liquid, the impurity version of f$^2$-based heavy fermions, is studied by the Wilson numerical renormalization group method. In particular, the case of the f$^2$-singlet crystalline-electric-field ground state is investigated assuming the case of UPt$_3$ with the hexagonal symmetry. It is found that the interorbital interaction becomes larger than the intraorbital one in contrast to the case of the bare Coulomb interaction for the parameters relevant to UPt$_3$. This result offers us a basis to construct a microscopic theory of the superconductivity of UPt$_3$ where the interorbital interactions are expected to play important roles.

Crossover Temperature from Non-Fermi Liquid to Fermi Liquid Behavior in Two Types of Impurity Kondo Model

Numerical renormalization-group results on entropy of the anisotropic two-channel Kondo model with the band-width cutoff ($D$) in the presence of a magnetic field ($h$) are obtained to determine crossover temperature from the non-Fermi liquid to Fermi liquid fixed point. It is found that the crossover temperature ($T_{\rm x}$) is given by $T_{\rm x} \equiv {r} T_{\rm K} \sim D(ΔJ/J_{\rm av})^2 e^{-1/J_{\rm av}}$ when $(h /T_{\rm K})^2 \ll r \ll 1 $, where $T_{\rm K}$, $J_{\rm av}$ and $ΔJ$ are the Kondo temperature, the average and difference of the exchange coupling constants, respectively. This result indicates that non-Fermi liquid behavior can be seen even if $ΔJ > T_{\rm K}$. Robust similarities of the crossover behavior in the region around the non-Fermi liquid critical point to that of the two-impurity Kondo model are also discussed.

Non-Fermi Liquid Behavior of U-impurity with $f^2$-Singlet Ground State

It is shown by the Wilson's numerical renormalization-group approach that Non-Fermi liquid (NFL) behaviors arise even for U-impurity with an $f^2$-singlet ground state, and all the puzzling behaviors of R$_{1-x}$U$_x$Ru$_2$Si$_2$ (R=Th, Y and La, $x\le 0.07$) can be explained on its basis. There exists an unstable NFL fixed point due to the balance between Kondo singlet and Crystalline-Electric-Field singlet ground states. For wide region in parameter space the system shows the NFL behavior as a transient phenomenon in temperature range accessible by experiment. Results for temperature dependence of the resistivity, the magnetic susceptibility and the Sommerfeld coefficient with and without magnetic field reproduce the behaviors observed in Th$_{1-x}$U$_x$Ru$_2$Si$_2$. Less anomalous properties of R$_{1-x}$U$_x$Ru$_2$Si$_2$ (R=Y and La) can be understood along the same scenario provided that those compounds have different sets of parameters.
