Distributions of Conductance and Shot Noise and Associated Phase Transitions

For a chaotic cavity with two indentical leads each supporting N channels, we compute analytically, for large N, the full distribution of the conductance and the shot noise power and show that in both cases there is a central Gaussian region flanked on both sides by non-Gaussian tails. The distribution is weakly singular at the junction of Gaussian and non-Gaussian regimes, a direct consequence of two phase transitions in an associated Coulomb gas problem.

Universal Record Statistics of Random Walks and Lévy Flights

It is shown that statistics of records for time series generated by random walks are independent of the details of the jump distribution, as long as the latter is continuous and symmetric. In N steps, the mean of the record distribution grows as the sqrt(4N/pi) while the standard deviation grows as sqrt((2-4/pi) N), so the distribution is non-self-averaging. The mean shortest and longest duration records grow as sqrt(N/pi) and 0.626508... N, respectively. The case of a discrete random walker is also studied, and similar asymptotic behavior is found.

On invariant 2x2 β-ensembles of random matrices

We introduce and solve exactly a family of invariant 2x2 random matrices, depending on one parameter η, and we show that rotational invariance and real Dyson index βare not incompatible properties. The probability density for the entries contains a weight function and a multiple trace-trace interaction term, which corresponds to the representation of the Vandermonde-squared coupling on the basis of power sums. As a result, the effective Dyson index β_{eff} of the ensemble can take any real value in an interval. Two weight functions (Gaussian and non-Gaussian) are explored in detail and the connections with β-ensembles of Dumitriu-Edelman and the so-called Poisson-Wigner crossover for the level spacing are respectively highlighted. A curious spectral twinning between ensembles of different symmetry classes is unveiled. The proposed technical tool more generically allows for designing actual matrix models which i) are rotationally invariant; ii) have a real Dyson index β_{eff}; iii) have a pre-assigned confining potential or alternatively level-spacing profile. The analytical results have been checked through numerical simulations with an excellent agreement. Eventually, we discuss possible generalizations and further directions of research.

Crowding at the Front of the Marathon Packs

We study the crowding of near-extreme events in the time gaps between successive finishers in major international marathons. Naively, one might expect these gaps to become progressively larger for better-placing finishers. While such an increase does indeed occur from the middle of the finishing pack down to approximately 20th place, the gaps saturate for the first 10-20 finishers. We give a probabilistic account of this feature. However, the data suggests that the gaps have a weak maximum around the 10th place, a feature that seems to have a sociological origin.

Statistics of the total number of collisions and the ordering time in a freely expanding hard-point gas

We consider a Jepsen gas of $N$ hard-point particles undergoing free expansion on a line, starting from random initial positions of the particles having random initial velocities. The particles undergo binary elastic collisions upon contact and move freely in-between collisions. After a certain ordering time $T_{o}$, the system reaches a ``fan'' state where all the velocities are completely ordered from left to right in an increasing fashion and there is no further collision. We compute analytically the distributions of (i) the total number of collisions and (ii) the ordering time $T_{o}$. We show that several features of these distributions are universal.

Condensation and Extreme Value Statistics

We study the factorised steady state of a general class of mass transport models in which mass, a conserved quantity, is transferred stochastically between sites. Condensation in such models is exhibited when above a critical mass density the marginal distribution for the mass at a single site develops a bump, $p_{\rm cond}(m)$, at large mass $m$. This bump corresponds to a condensate site carrying a finite fraction of the mass in the system. Here, we study the condensation transition from a different aspect, that of extreme value statistics. We consider the cumulative distribution of the largest mass in the system and compute its asymptotic behaviour. We show 3 distinct behaviours: at subcritical densities the distribution is Gumbel; at the critical density the distribution is Fréchet, and above the critical density a different distribution emerges. We relate $p_{\rm cond}(m)$ to the probability density of the largest mass in the system.

Real Roots of Random Polynomials and Zero Crossing Properties of Diffusion Equation

We study various statistical properties of real roots of three different classes of random polynomials which recently attracted a vivid interest in the context of probability theory and quantum chaos. We first focus on gap probabilities on the real axis, i.e. the probability that these polynomials have no real root in a given interval. For generalized Kac polynomials, indexed by an integer d, of large degree n, one finds that the probability of no real root in the interval [0,1] decays as a power law n^{-θ(d)} where θ(d) > 0 is the persistence exponent of the diffusion equation with random initial conditions in spatial dimension d. For n \gg 1 even, the probability that they have no real root on the full real axis decays like n^{-2(θ(2)+θ(d))}. For Weyl polynomials and Binomial polynomials, this probability decays respectively like \exp{(-2θ_{\infty}} \sqrt{n}) and \exp{(-πθ_{\infty} \sqrt{n})} where θ_{\infty} is such that θ(d) = 2^{-3/2} θ_{\infty} \sqrt{d} in large dimension d. We also show that the probability that such polynomials have exactly k roots on a given interval [a,b] has a scaling form given by \exp{(-N_{ab} \tilde ϕ(k/N_{ab}))} where N_{ab} is the mean number of real roots in [a,b] and \tilde ϕ(x) a universal scaling function. We develop a simple Mean Field (MF) theory reproducing qualitatively these scaling behaviors, and improve systematically this MF approach using the method of persistence with partial survival, which in some cases yields exact results. Finally, we show that the probability density function of the largest absolute value of the real roots has a universal algebraic tail with exponent {-2}. These analytical results are confirmed by detailed numerical computations.

Distribution of the time at which the deviation of a Brownian motion is maximum before its first-passage time

We calculate analytically the probability density $P(t_m)$ of the time $t_m$ at which a continuous-time Brownian motion (with and without drift) attains its maximum before passing through the origin for the first time. We also compute the joint probability density $P(M,t_m)$ of the maximum $M$ and $t_m$. In the driftless case, we find that $P(t_m)$ has power-law tails: $P(t_m)\sim t_m^{-3/2}$ for large $t_m$ and $P(t_m)\sim t_m^{-1/2}$ for small $t_m$. In presence of a drift towards the origin, $P(t_m)$ decays exponentially for large $t_m$. The results from numerical simulations are in excellent agreement with our analytical predictions.

Exact Minimum Eigenvalue Distribution of an Entangled Random Pure State

A recent conjecture regarding the average of the minimum eigenvalue of the reduced density matrix of a random complex state is proved. In fact, the full distribution of the minimum eigenvalue is derived exactly for both the cases of a random real and a random complex state. Our results are relevant to the entanglement properties of eigenvectors of the orthogonal and unitary ensembles of random matrix theory and quantum chaotic systems. They also provide a rare exactly solvable case for the distribution of the minimum of a set of N {\em strongly correlated} random variables for all values of N (and not just for large N).

Extreme Value Statistics of Eigenvalues of Gaussian Random Matrices

We compute exact asymptotic results for the probability of the occurrence of large deviations of the largest (smallest) eigenvalue of random matrices belonging to the Gaussian orthogonal, unitary and symplectic ensembles. In particular, we show that the probability that all the eigenvalues of an (NxN) random matrix are positive (negative) decreases for large N as ~\exp[-βθ(0) N^2] where the Dyson index βcharacterizes the ensemble and the exponent θ(0)=(\ln 3)/4=0.274653... is universal. We compute the probability that the eigenvalues lie in the interval [ζ_1,ζ_2] which allows us to calculate the joint probability distribution of the minimum and the maximum eigenvalue. As a byproduct, we also obtain exactly the average density of states in Gaussian ensembles whose eigenvalues are restricted to lie in the interval [ζ_1,ζ_2], thus generalizing the celebrated Wigner semi-circle law to these restricted ensembles. It is found that the density of states generically exhibits an inverse square-root singularity at the location of the barriers. These results are confirmed by numerical simulations.

Finite-size effects on the dynamics of the zero-range process

We study finite-size effects on the dynamics of a one-dimensional zero-range process which shows a phase transition from a low-density disordered phase to a high-density condensed phase. The current fluctuations in the steady state show striking differences in the two phases. In the disordered phase, the variance of the integrated current shows damped oscillations in time due to the motion of fluctuations around the ring as a dissipating kinematic wave. In the condensed phase, this wave cannot propagate through the condensate, and the dynamics is dominated by the long-time relocation of the condensate from site to site.

Statistics of the Number of Zero Crossings : from Random Polynomials to Diffusion Equation

We consider a class of real random polynomials, indexed by an integer d, of large degree n and focus on the number of real roots of such random polynomials. The probability that such polynomials have no real root in the interval [0,1] decays as a power law n^{-θ(d)} where θ(d)>0 is the exponent associated to the decay of the persistence probability for the diffusion equation with random initial conditions in space dimension d. For n even, the probability that such polynomials have no root on the full real axis decays as n^{-2(θ(d) + θ(2))}. For d=1, this connection allows for a physical realization of real random polynomials. We further show that the probability that such polynomials have exactly k real roots in [0,1] has an unusual scaling form given by n^{-\tilde ϕ(k/\log n)} where \tilde ϕ(x) is a universal large deviation function.

Extreme statistics of complex random and quantum chaotic states

An exact analytical description of extreme intensity statistics in complex random states is derived. These states have the statistical properties of the Gaussian and Circular Unitary Ensemble eigenstates of random matrix theory. Although the components are correlated by the normalization constraint, it is still possible to derive compact formulae for all values of the dimensionality N. The maximum intensity result slowly approaches the Gumbel distribution even though the variables are bounded, whereas the minimum intensity result rapidly approaches the Weibull distribution. Since random matrix theory is conjectured to be applicable to chaotic quantum systems, we calculate the extreme eigenfunction statistics for the standard map with parameters at which its classical map is fully chaotic. The statistical behaviors are consistent with the finite-N formulae.

Tagged Particle Correlations in the Asymmetric Simple Exclusion Process: Finite Size Effects

We study finite size effects in the variance of the displacement of a tagged particle in the stationary state of the Asymmetric Simple Exclusion Process (ASEP) on a ring of size $L$. The process involves hard core particles undergoing stochastic driven dynamics on a lattice. The variance of the displacement of the tagged particle, averaged with respect to an initial stationary ensemble and stochastic evolution, grows linearly with time at both small and very large times. We find that at intermediate times, it shows oscillations with a well defined size-dependent period. These oscillations arise from sliding density fluctuations (SDF) in the stationary state with respect to the drift of the tagged particle, the density fluctuations being transported through the system by kinematic waves. In the general context of driven diffusive systems, both the Edwards-Wilkinson (EW) and the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) fixed points are unstable with respect to the SDF fixed point, a flow towards which is generated on adding a gradient term to the EW and the KPZ time-evolution equation. We also study tagged particle correlations for a fixed initial configuration, drawn from the stationary ensemble, following earlier work by van Beijeren. We find that the time dependence of this correlation is determined by the dissipation of the density fluctuations. We show that an exactly solvable linearized model captures the essential qualitative features seen in the finite size effects of the tagged particle correlations in the ASEP. Moreover, this linearized model also provides an exact coarse-grained description of two other microscopic models.

Integer Partitions and Exclusion Statistics

We provide a combinatorial description of exclusion statistics in terms of minimal difference $p$ partitions. We compute the probability distribution of the number of parts in a random minimal $p$ partition. It is shown that the bosonic point $ p=0$ is a repulsive fixed point for which the limiting distribution has a Gumbel form. For all positive $p$ the distribution is shown to be Gaussian.

Large Deviations of the Maximum Eigenvalue in Wishart Random Matrices

We compute analytically the probability of large fluctuations to the left of the mean of the largest eigenvalue in the Wishart (Laguerre) ensemble of positive definite random matrices. We show that the probability that all the eigenvalues of a (N x N) Wishart matrix W=X^T X (where X is a rectangular M x N matrix with independent Gaussian entries) are smaller than the mean value <λ>=N/c decreases for large N as $\sim \exp[-\fracβ{2}N^2 Φ_{-}(\frac{2}{\sqrt{c}}+1;c)]$, where β=1,2 correspond respectively to real and complex Wishart matrices, c=N/M < 1 and Φ_{-}(x;c) is a large deviation function that we compute explicitly. The result for the Anti-Wishart case (M < N) simply follows by exchanging M and N. We also analytically determine the average spectral density of an ensemble of constrained Wishart matrices whose eigenvalues are forced to be smaller than a fixed barrier. The numerical simulations are in excellent agreement with the analytical predictions.
