Optimal Resetting Brownian Bridges

We introduce a resetting Brownian bridge as a simple model to study search processes where the total search time $t_f$ is finite and the searcher returns to its starting point at $t_f$. This is simply a Brownian motion with a Poissonian resetting rate $r$ to the origin which is constrained to start and end at the origin at time $t_f$. We first provide a rejection-free algorithm to generate such resetting bridges in all dimensions by deriving an effective Langevin equation with an explicit space-time dependent drift $\tilde μ({\bf x},t)$ and resetting rate $\tilde r({\bf x}, t)$. We also study the efficiency of the search process in one-dimension by computing exactly various observables such as the mean-square displacement, the hitting probability of a fixed target and the expected maximum. Surprisingly, we find that there exists an optimal resetting rate $r^*$ that maximizes the search efficiency, even in the presence of a bridge constraint. We show however that the physical mechanism responsible for this optimal resetting rate for bridges is entirely different from resetting Brownian motions without the bridge constraint.

Integer partitions and exclusion statistics: Limit shapes and the largest part of Young diagrams

We compute the limit shapes of the Young diagrams of the minimal difference $p$ partitions and provide a simple physical interpretation for the limit shapes. We also calculate the asymptotic distribution of the largest part of the Young diagram and show that the scaled distribution has a Gumbel form for all $p$. This Gumbel statistics for the largest part remains unchanged even for general partitions of the form $E=\sum_i n_i i^{1/ν}$ with $ν>0$ where $n_i$ is the number of times the part $i$ appears.

Multilayered density profile for noninteracting fermions in a rotating two-dimensional trap

We compute exactly the average spatial density for $N$ spinless noninteracting fermions in a $2d$ harmonic trap rotating with a constant frequency $Ω$ in the presence of an additional repulsive central potential $γ/r^2$. We find that, in the large $N$ limit, the bulk density has a rich and nontrivial profile -- with a hole at the center of the trap and surrounded by a multi-layered "wedding cake" structure. The number of layers depends on $N$ and on the two parameters $Ω$ and $γ$ leading to a rich phase diagram. Zooming in on the edge of the $k^{\rm th}$ layer, we find that the edge density profile exhibits $k$ kinks located at the zeroes of the $k^{\rm th}$ Hermite polynomial. Interestingly, in the large $k$ limit, we show that the edge density profile approaches a limiting form, which resembles the shape of a propagating front, found in the unitary evolution of certain quantum spin chains. We also study how a newly formed droplet grows in size on top of the last layer as one changes the parameters.

Mean area of the convex hull of a run and tumble particle in two dimensions

We investigate the statistics of the convex hull for a single run-and-tumble particle in two dimensions. Run-and-tumble particle, also known as persistent random walker, has gained significant interest in the recent years due to its biological application in modelling the motion of bacteria. We consider two different statistical ensembles depending on whether (i) the total number of tumbles $n$ or (ii) the total observation time $t$ is kept fixed. Benchmarking the results on perimeter, we study the statistical properties of the area of the convex hull for RTP. Exploiting the connections to extreme value statistics, we obtain exact analytical expressions for the mean area for both ensembles. For fixed-$t$ ensemble, we show that the mean possesses a scaling form in $γt$ (with $γ$ being the tumbling rate) and the corresponding scaling function is exactly computed. Interestingly, we find that it exhibits crossover from $\sim t^3$ scaling at small times $\left( t \ll γ^{-1} \right)$ to $\sim t$ scaling at large times $\left( t \gg γ^{-1} \right)$. On the other hand, for fixed-$n$ ensemble, the mean expectedly grows linearly with $n$ for $n \gg 1$. All our analytical findings are supported with numerical simulations.

Statistics of the maximum and the convex hull of a Brownian motion in confined geometries

We consider a Brownian particle with diffusion coefficient $D$ in a $d$-dimensional ball of radius $R$ with reflecting boundaries. We study the maximum $M_x(t)$ of the trajectory of the particle along the $x$-direction at time $t$. In the long time limit, the maximum converges to the radius of the ball $M_x(t) \to R$ for $t\to \infty$. We investigate how this limit is approached and obtain an exact analytical expression for the distribution of the fluctuations $Δ(t) = [R-M_x(t)]/R$ in the limit of large $t$ in all dimensions. We find that the distribution of $Δ(t)$ exhibits a rich variety of behaviors depending on the dimension $d$. These results are obtained by establishing a connection between this problem and the narrow escape time problem. We apply our results in $d=2$ to study the convex hull of the trajectory of the particle in a disk of radius $R$ with reflecting boundaries. We find that the mean perimeter $\langle L(t)\rangle$ of the convex hull exhibits a slow convergence towards the perimeter of the circle $2πR$ with a stretched exponential decay $2πR-\langle L(t)\rangle \propto \sqrt{R}(Dt)^{1/4} \,e^{-2\sqrt{2Dt}/R}$. Finally, we generalise our results to other confining geometries, such as the ellipse with reflecting boundaries. Our results are corroborated by thorough numerical simulations.

Edge fluctuations and third-order phase transition in harmonically confined long-range systems

We study the distribution of the position of the rightmost particle $x_{\max}$ in a $N$-particle Riesz gas in one dimension confined in a harmonic trap. The particles interact via long-range repulsive potential, of the form $r^{-k}$ with $-2 -2$. We also find that these large deviation functions describe a pulled to pushed type phase transition as observed in Dyson's log-gas ($k\to 0$) and $1d$ one component plasma ($k=-1$). Remarkably, we find that the phase transition remains $3^{\rm rd}$ order for the entire regime. Our results demonstrate the striking universality of the $3^{\rm rd}$ order transition even in models that fall outside the paradigm of Coulomb systems and the random matrix theory. We numerically verify our analytical expressions of the large deviation functions via Monte Carlo simulation using an importance sampling algorithm.

Full counting statistics for interacting trapped fermions

We study $N$ spinless fermions in their ground state confined by an external potential in one dimension with long range interactions of the general Calogero-Sutherland type. For some choices of the potential this system maps to standard random matrix ensembles for general values of the Dyson index $β$. In the fermion model $β$ controls the strength of the interaction, $β=2$ corresponding to the noninteracting case. We study the quantum fluctuations of the number of fermions ${\cal N}_{\cal D}$ in a domain $\cal{D}$ of macroscopic size in the bulk of the Fermi gas. We predict that for general $β$ the variance of ${\cal N}_{\cal D}$ grows as $A_β \log N + B_β$ for $N \gg 1$ and we obtain a formula for $A_β$ and $B_β$. This is based on an explicit calculation for $β\in\left\{ 1,2,4\right\} $ and on a conjecture that we formulate for general $β$. This conjecture further allows us to obtain a universal formula for the higher cumulants of ${\cal N}_{\cal D}$. Our results for the variance in the microscopic regime are found to be consistent with the predictions of the Luttinger liquid theory with parameter $K = 2/β$, and allow to go beyond. In addition we present families of interacting fermion models in one dimension which, in their ground states, can be mapped onto random matrix models. We obtain the mean fermion density for these models for general interaction parameter $β$. In some cases the fermion density exhibits interesting transitions, for example we obtain a noninteracting fermion formulation of the Gross-Witten-Wadia model.

Generating stochastic trajectories with global dynamical constraints

We propose a method to exactly generate Brownian paths $x_c(t)$ that are constrained to return to the origin at some future time $t_f$, with a given fixed area $A_f = \int_0^{t_f}dt\, x_c(t)$ under their trajectory. We derive an exact effective Langevin equation with an effective force that accounts for the constraint. In addition, we develop the corresponding approach for discrete-time random walks, with arbitrary jump distributions including Lévy flights, for which we obtain an effective jump distribution that encodes the constraint. Finally, we generalise our method to other types of dynamical constraints such as a fixed occupation time on the positive axis $T_f=\int_0^{t_f}dt\, Θ\left[x_c(t)\right]$ or a fixed generalised quadratic area $\mathcal{A}_f=\int_0^{t_f}dt \,x_c^2(t)$.

One-dimensional Monte Carlo dynamics at zero temperature

We investigate, both analytically and with numerical simulations, a Monte Carlo dynamics at zero temperature, where a random walker evolving in continuous space and discrete time seeks to minimize its potential energy, by decreasing this quantity at each jump. The resulting dynamics is universal in the sense that it does not depend on the underlying potential energy landscape, as long as it admits a unique minimum; furthermore, the long time regime does not depend on the details of the jump distribution, but only on its behaviour for small jumps. We work out the scaling properties of this dynamics, as embodied by the walker probability density. Our analytical predictions are in excellent agreement with direct Monte Carlo simulations.

Record statistics for random walks and Lévy flights with resetting

We compute exactly the mean number of records $\langle R_N \rangle$ for a time-series of size $N$ whose entries represent the positions of a discrete time random walker on the line. At each time step, the walker jumps by a length $η$ drawn independently from a symmetric and continuous distribution $f(η)$ with probability $1-r$ (with $0\leq r < 1$) and with the complementary probability $r$ it resets to its starting point $x=0$. This is an exactly solvable example of a weakly correlated time-series that interpolates between a strongly correlated random walk series (for $r=0$) and an uncorrelated time-series (for $(1-r) \ll 1$). Remarkably, we found that for every fixed $r \in [0,1[$ and any $N$, the mean number of records $\langle R_N \rangle$ is completely universal, i.e., independent of the jump distribution $f(η)$. In particular, for large $N$, we show that $\langle R_N \rangle$ grows very slowly with increasing $N$ as $\langle R_N \rangle \approx (1/\sqrt{r})\, \ln N$ for $0<r <1$. We also computed the exact universal crossover scaling functions for $\langle R_N \rangle$ in the two limits $r \to 0$ and $r \to 1$. Our analytical predictions are in excellent agreement with numerical simulations.

Stability of large complex systems with heterogeneous relaxation dynamics

We study the probability of stability of a large complex system of size $N$ within the framework of a generalized May model, which assumes a linear dynamics of each population size $n_i$ (with respect to its equilibrium value): $ \frac{\mathrm{d}\, n_i}{\mathrm{d}t} = - a_i n_i - \sqrt{T} \sum_{j} J_{ij} n_j $. The $a_i>0$'s are the intrinsic decay rates, $J_{ij}$ is a real symmetric $(N\times N)$ Gaussian random matrix and $\sqrt{T}$ measures the strength of pairwise interaction between different species. Unlike in May's original homogeneous model, each species has now an intrinsic damping $a_i$ that may differ from one another. As the interaction strength $T$ increases, the system undergoes a phase transition from a stable phase to an unstable phase at a critical value $T=T_c$. We reinterpret the probability of stability in terms of the hitting time of the level $b=0$ of an associated Dyson Brownian Motion (DBM), starting at the initial position $a_i$ and evolving in `time' $T$. In the large $N \to \infty$ limit, using this DBM picture, we are able to completely characterize $T_c$ for arbitrary density $μ(a)$ of the $a_i$'s. For a specific flat configuration $a_i = 1 + σ\frac{i-1}{N}$, we obtain an explicit parametric solution for the limiting (as $N\to \infty$) spectral density for arbitrary $T$ and $σ$. For finite but large $N$, we also compute the large deviation properties of the probability of stability on the stable side $T < T_c$ using a Coulomb gas representation.

First-order condensation transition in the position distribution of a run-and-tumble particle in one dimension

We consider a single run-and-tumble particle (RTP) moving in one dimension. We assume that the velocity of the particle is drawn independently at each tumbling from a zero-mean Gaussian distribution and that the run times are exponentially distributed. We investigate the probability distribution $P(X,N)$ of the position $X$ of the particle after $N$ runs, with $N\gg 1$. We show that in the regime $ X \sim N^{3/4}$ the distribution $P(X,N)$ has a large deviation form with a rate function characterized by a discontinuous derivative at the critical value $X=X_c>0$. The same is true for $X=-X_c$ due to the symmetry of $P(X,N)$. We show that this singularity corresponds to a first-order condensation transition: for $X>X_c$ a single large jump dominates the RTP trajectory. We consider the participation ratio of the single-run displacements as the order parameter of the system, showing that this quantity is discontinuous at $X=X_c$. Our results are supported by numerical simulations performed with a constrained Markov chain Monte Carlo algorithm.

Truncated linear statistics in the one dimensional one-component plasma

In this paper, we study the probability distribution of the observable $s = (1/N)\sum_{i=N-N'+1}^N x_i$, with $1 \leq N' \leq N$ and $x_1<x_2<\cdots< x_N$ representing the ordered positions of $N$ particles in a $1d$ one-component plasma, i.e., $N$ harmonically confined charges on a line, with pairwise repulsive $1d$ Coulomb interaction $|x_i-x_j|$. This observable represents an example of a truncated linear statistics -- here the center of mass of the $N' = κ\, N$ (with $0 < κ\leq 1$) rightmost particles. It interpolates between the position of the rightmost particle (in the limit $κ\to 0$) and the full center of mass (in the limit $κ\to 1$). We show that, for large $N$, $s$ fluctuates around its mean $\langle s \rangle$ and the typical fluctuations are Gaussian, of width $O(N^{-3/2})$. The atypical large fluctuations of $s$, for fixed $κ$, are instead described by a large deviation form ${\cal P}_{N, κ}(s)\simeq \exp{\left[-N^3 ϕ_κ(s)\right]}$, where the rate function $ϕ_κ(s)$ is computed analytically. We show that $ϕ_κ(s)$ takes different functional forms in five distinct regions in the $(κ,s)$ plane separated by phase boundaries, thus leading to a rich phase diagram in the $(κ,s)$ plane. Across all the phase boundaries the rate function $ϕ(κ,s)$ undergoes a third-order phase transition. This rate function is also evaluated numerically using a sophisticated importance sampling method, and we find a perfect agreement with our analytical predictions.

Generating discrete-time constrained random walks and Lévy flights

We introduce a method to exactly generate bridge trajectories for discrete-time random walks, with arbitrary jump distributions, that are constrained to initially start at the origin and return to the origin after a fixed time. The method is based on an effective jump distribution that implicitly accounts for the bridge constraint. It is illustrated on various jump distributions and is shown to be very efficient in practice. In addition, we show how to generalize the method to other types of constrained random walks such as generalized bridges, excursions, and meanders.

Distribution of the time of the maximum for stationary processes

We consider a one-dimensional stationary stochastic process $x(τ)$ of duration $T$. We study the probability density function (PDF) $P(t_{\rm m}|T)$ of the time $t_{\rm m}$ at which $x(τ)$ reaches its global maximum. By using a path integral method, we compute $P(t_{\rm m}|T)$ for a number of equilibrium and nonequilibrium stationary processes, including the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process, Brownian motion with stochastic resetting and a single confined run-and-tumble particle. For a large class of equilibrium stationary processes that correspond to diffusion in a confining potential, we show that the scaled distribution $P(t_{\rm m}|T)$, for large $T$, has a universal form (independent of the details of the potential). This universal distribution is uniform in the ``bulk'', i.e., for $0 \ll t_{\rm m} \ll T$ and has a nontrivial edge scaling behavior for $t_{\rm m} \to 0$ (and when $t_{\rm m} \to T$), that we compute exactly. Moreover, we show that for any equilibrium process the PDF $P(t_{\rm m}|T)$ is symmetric around $t_{\rm m}=T/2$, i.e., $P(t_{\rm m}|T)=P(T-t_{\rm m}|T)$. This symmetry provides a simple method to decide whether a given stationary time series $x(τ)$ is at equilibrium or not.

Harmonically confined long-ranged interacting gas in the presence of a hard wall

In this paper, we compute exactly the average density of a harmonically confined Riesz gas of $N$ particles for large $N$ in the presence of a hard wall. In this Riesz gas, the particles repel each other via a pairwise interaction that behaves as $|x_i - x_j|^{-k}$ for $k>-2$, with $x_i$ denoting the position of the $i^{\rm th}$ particle. This density can be classified into three different regimes of $k$. For $k \geq 1$, where the interactions are effectively short-ranged, the appropriately scaled density has a finite support over $[-l_k(w),w]$ where $w$ is the scaled position of the wall. While the density vanishes at the left edge of the support, it approaches a nonzero constant at the right edge $w$. For $-1<k<1$, where the interactions are weakly long-ranged, we find that the scaled density is again supported over $[-l_k(w),w]$. While it still vanishes at the left edge of the support, it diverges at the right edge $w$ algebraically with an exponent $(k-1)/2$. For $-2<k< -1$, the interactions are strongly long-ranged that leads to a rather exotic density profile with an extended bulk part and a delta-peak at the wall, separated by a hole in between. Exactly at $k=-1$ the hole disappears. For $-2<k< -1$, we find an interesting first-order phase transition when the scaled position of the wall decreases through a critical value $w=w^*(k)$. For $w<w^*(k)$, the density is a pure delta-peak located at the wall. The amplitude of the delta-peak plays the role of an order parameter which jumps to the value $1$ as $w$ is decreased through $w^*(k)$. Our analytical results are in very good agreement with our Monte-Carlo simulations.

Universal record statistics for random walks and Lévy flights with a nonzero staying probability

We compute exactly the statistics of the number of records in a discrete-time random walk model on a line where the walker stays at a given position with a nonzero probability $0\leq p \leq 1$, while with the complementary probability $1-p$, it jumps to a new position with a jump length drawn from a continuous and symmetric distribution $f_0(η)$. We have shown that, for arbitrary $p$, the statistics of records up to step $N$ is completely universal, i.e., independent of $f_0(η)$ for any $N$. We also compute the connected two-time correlation function $C_p(m_1, m_2)$ of the record-breaking events at times $m_1$ and $m_2$ and show it is also universal for all $p$. Moreover, we demonstrate that $C_p(m_1, m_2)< C_0(m_1, m_2)$ for all $p>0$, indicating that a nonzero $p$ induces additional anti-correlations between record events. We further show that these anti-correlations lead to a drastic reduction in the fluctuations of the record numbers with increasing $p$. This is manifest in the Fano factor, i.e. the ratio of the variance and the mean of the record number, which we compute explicitly. We also show that an interesting scaling limit emerges when $p \to 1$, $N \to \infty$ with the product $t = (1-p)\, N$ fixed. We compute exactly the associated universal scaling functions for the mean, variance and the Fano factor of the number of records in this scaling limit. .

Optimal mean first-passage time of a Brownian searcher with resetting in one and two dimensions: Experiments, theory and numerical tests

We study experimentally, numerically and theoretically the optimal mean time needed by a Brownian particle, freely diffusing either in one or two dimensions, to reach, within a tolerance radius $R_{\text tol}$, a target at a distance $L$ from an initial position in the presence of resetting. The reset position is Gaussian distributed with width $σ$. We derived and tested two resetting protocols, one with a periodic and one with random (Poissonian) resetting times. We computed and measured the full first-passage probability distribution that displays spectacular spikes immediately after each resetting time for close targets. We study the optimal mean first-passage time as a function of the resetting period/rate for different target distances (values of the ratios $b=L/σ$) and target size ($a=R_\text{tol}/L$). We find an interesting phase transition at a critical value of $b$, both in one and two dimensions. The details of the calculations as well as experimental setup and limitations are discussed.
