U(1)' coupling constant at low energies from heterotic orbifolds

Additional Abelian gauge interactions are generic to string compactifications. In heterotic string models, gauge coupling unification of such forces and other gauge interactions is natural due to their common origin. In this letter we study systematically the 1-loop running of the coupling constants in effective vacua emerging from Z8 heterotic orbifold compactifications that provide the matter spectrum of the MSSM plus some vectorlike exotics, restricting to vacua that yield a non-anomalous U(1)' symmetry, gauge coupling unification and the observed values of known gauge couplings. We determine the low-energy value of the U(1)' coupling constant for different scales of supersymmetry breakdown. We find that the U(1)' coupling constant is quite restricted in string models to lie in the range 0.46-0.7 for low-scale supersymmetry or 0.44-0.6 in other cases. We argue that the phenomenology of these string vacua should be further explored to solve some extant issues, such as the stability of the Higgs vacuum.

Charting the flavor landscape of MSSM-like Abelian heterotic orbifolds

Discovering a selection principle and the origin of flavor symmetries from an ultraviolet completion of particle physics is an interesting open task. As a step in this direction, we classify all possible flavor symmetries of 4D massless spectra emerging from supersymmetric Abelian orbifold compactifications, including roto-translations and non-factorizable compact spaces, for generic moduli values. Although these symmetries are valid in all string theories, we focus on the E8 x E8 heterotic string. We perform the widest known search of E8 x E8 Abelian orbifold compactifications, yielding over 121,000 models with MSSM-like features. About 75.4% of these models exhibit flavor symmetries containing D4 factors and only nearly 1.2% have Delta(54) factors. The remaining models are furnished with purely Abelian flavor symmetries. Our findings suggest that, should particle phenomenology arise from a heterotic orbifold, it could accommodate only one of these flavor symmetries.

Note on the space group selection rule for closed strings on orbifolds

It is well-known that the space group selection rule constrains the interactions of closed strings on orbifolds. For some examples, this rule has been described by an effective Abelian symmetry that combines with a permutation symmetry to a non-Abelian flavor symmetry like $D_4$ or $Δ(54)$. However, the general case of the effective Abelian symmetries was not yet fully understood. In this work, we formalize the computation of the Abelian symmetry that results from the space group selection rule by imposing two conditions only: (i) well-defined discrete charges and (ii) their conservation. The resulting symmetry, which we call the space group flavor symmetry $D_S$, is uniquely specified by the Abelianization of the space group. For all Abelian orbifolds with $N=1$ supersymmetry we compute $D_S$ and identify new cases, for example, where $D_S$ contains a $Z_2$ dark matter-parity with charges 0 and 1 for massless and massive strings, respectively.

On flavor symmetries of phenomenologically viable string compactifications

Heterotic orbifolds can explain the origin of flavor symmetries and the flavor representations of matter fields in particle physics as a result of the geometric properties of the associated string states in the compact space. After a review of the method to obtain flavor symmetries in these models, we determine the most frequent non-Abelian flavor symmetries appearing in promising Abelian heterotic orbifolds. Interestingly, these symmetries correspond only to D_4, Delta(54) and products of these symmetries and Abelian factors. A large set of promising models exhibits purely Abelian flavor symmetries. We finally explore the phenomenological potential of a sample model endowed with Delta(54) assuming certain ad hoc flavon expectation values.

Kähler potential of heterotic orbifolds with multiple Kähler moduli

Aiming at improving our knowledge of the low-energy limit of heterotic orbifold compactifications, we determine at lowest order the Kahler potential of matter fields in the case where more than three bulk Kahler moduli appear. Interestingly, bulk matter fields couple to more than one Kahler modulus, a subtle difference with models with only three Kahler moduli that may provide a tool to address the question of moduli stabilization in these models.

Delta(54) flavor phenomenology and strings

Delta(54) can serve as a flavor symmetry in particle physics, but remains almost unexplored. We show that in a classification of semi-realistic Z3xZ3 heterotic string orbifolds, Delta(54) turns out to be the most natural flavor symmetry, providing additional motivation for its study. We revisit its phenomenological potential from a low-energy perspective and subject to the constraints of string models. We find a model with Delta(54) arising from heterotic orbifolds that leads to the Gatto-Sartori-Tonin relation for quarks and charged-leptons. Additionally, in the neutrino sector, it leads to a normal hierarchy for neutrino masses and a correlation between the reactor and the atmospheric mixing angles, the latter taking values in the second octant and being compatible at three sigmas with experimental data.

One-loop corrections for Higgs-portal dark matter

Models endowed with Higgs portals can probe into the hidden sectors of particle physics while providing stable dark matter candidates. Previous tree-level computations in such scenarios have shown that experimental bounds constrain dark matter to a very narrow region in parameter space. Aiming at improving the study of the implications of those constraints, we inspect one-loop corrections to the annihilation cross section for scalar dark matter into observable fermions. We find that these loop contributions might be enough to drastically change those results by deforming in about 10% the allowed parameter space for dark matter particles with masses even below 1 TeV. These findings encourage further investigation.

Non-supersymmetric heterotic model building

We investigate orbifold and smooth Calabi-Yau compactifications of the non-supersymmetric heterotic SO(16)xSO(16) string. We focus on such Calabi-Yau backgrounds in order to recycle commonly employed techniques, like index theorems and cohomology theory, to determine both the fermionic and bosonic 4D spectra. We argue that the N=0 theory never leads to tachyons on smooth Calabi-Yaus in the large volume approximation. As twisted tachyons may arise on certain singular orbifolds, we conjecture that such tachyonic states are lifted in the full blow-up. We perform model searches on selected orbifold geometries. In particular, we construct an explicit example of a Standard Model-like theory with three generations and a single Higgs field.

Heterotic non-Abelian orbifolds

We perform the first systematic analysis of particle spectra obtained from heterotic string compactifications on non-Abelian toroidal orbifolds. After developing a new technique to compute the particle spectrum in the case of standard embedding based on higher dimensional supersymmetry, we compute the Hodge numbers for all recently classified 331 non-Abelian orbifold geometries which yield N=1 supersymmetry for heterotic compactifications. Surprisingly, most Hodge numbers follow the empiric pattern h^(1,1) - h^(2,1) = 0 mod 6, which might be related to the number of three standard model generations. Furthermore, we study the fundamental groups in order to identify the possibilities for non-local gauge symmetry breaking. Three examples are discussed in detail: the simplest non-Abelian orbifold S_3 and two more elaborate examples, T_7 and Δ(27), which have only one untwisted Kaehler and no untwisted complex structure modulus. Such models might be especially interesting in the context of no-scale supergravity. Finally, we briefly discuss the case of orbifolds with vanishing Euler numbers in the context of enhanced (spontaneously broken) supersymmetry.

Revisiting Coupling Selection Rules in Heterotic Orbifold Models

We study L-point couplings between twisted sector fields in heterotic orbifold compactifications, using conformal field theory. Selection rules provide an easy way to identify which couplings are non-vanishing. Those used in the current literature are gauge invariance, R-charge conservation and the space group selection rule, but they are not the whole story. We revive and refine a fourth selection rule, due to symmetries in the underlying torus lattice, and introduce a fifth one, due to the existence or not of classical worldsheet instanton solutions to mediate the couplings. We consider briefly the phenomenological consequences of the additional rules, in particular for recent orbifold constructions whose field content correspond to that of the MSSM. The structure of the exotic mass matrices is unaltered and many dimension-5 proton-decay operators vanish.

Kinetic Mixing of U(1)s in Heterotic Orbifolds

We study kinetic mixing between massless U(1) gauge symmetries in the bosonic formulation of heterotic orbifold compactifications. For non-prime Z_N factorisable orbifolds, we find a simple expression of the mixing in terms of the properties of the N=2 subsectors, which helps understand under what conditions mixing can occur. With this tool, we analyse Z_6-II heterotic orbifolds and find non-vanishing mixing even without including Wilson lines. We show that some semi-realistic models of the Mini-Landscape admit supersymmetric vacua with mixing between the hypercharge and an additional U(1), which can be broken at low energies. We finally discuss some phenomenologically appealing possibilities that hidden photons in heterotic orbifolds allow.

The Orbifolder: A Tool to study the Low Energy Effective Theory of Heterotic Orbifolds

The orbifolder is a program developed in C++ that computes and analyzes the low-energy effective theory of heterotic orbifold compactifications. The program includes routines to compute the massless spectrum, to identify the allowed couplings in the superpotential, to automatically generate large sets of orbifold models, to identify phenomenologically interesting models (e.g. MSSM-like models) and to analyze their vacuum-configurations.

Moduli fixing in semirealistic string compactifications

Heterotic orbifold compactifications yield a myriad of models that reproduce many properties of the supersymmetric extension of the standard model and provide potential solutions to persisting problems of high energy physics, such as the origin of the neutrino masses and the strong CP problem. However, the details of the phenomenology in these scenarios rely on the assumption of a stable vacuum, characterized by moduli fields. In this note, we drop this assumption and address the problem of moduli stabilization in realistic orbifold models. We study their qualities and their 4D effective action, and discuss how nonperturbative effects indeed lift all bulk moduli directions. The resulting vacua, although still unstable, are typically de Sitter and there are generically some quasi-flat directions which can help to deal with cosmological challenges, such as inflation.

On Moduli Stabilisation and de Sitter Vacua in MSSM Heterotic Orbifolds

We study the problem of moduli stabilisation in explicit heterotic orbifold compactifications, whose spectra contain the MSSM plus some vector-like exotics that can be decoupled. Considering all the bulk moduli, we obtain the 4D low energy effective action for the compactification, which has contributions from various, computable, perturbative and non-perturbative effects. Hidden sector gaugino condensation and string worldsheet instantons result in a combination of racetrack, KKLT and cusp-form contributions to the superpotential, which lift all the bulk moduli directions. We point out the properties observed in our concrete models, which tend to be missed when only "generic" features of a model are assumed. We search for interesting vacua and find several de Sitter solutions, but -- so far -- they all turn out to be unstable.

Proton Hexality in Local Grand Unification

Proton hexality is a discrete symmetry that avoids the problem of too fast proton decay in the supersymmetric extension of the standard model. Unfortunately it is inconsistent with conventional grand unification. We show that proton hexality can be incorporated in the scheme of "Local Grand Unification" discussed in the framework of model building in (heterotic) string theory.

Constraints on a very light CP-odd Higgs of the NMSSM and other axion-like particles

In the NMSSM, a light CP-odd Higgs arises due to spontaneous breaking of approximate symmetries such as Peccei-Quinn or R-symmetry and is motivated by string theory. The case when it is heavier than two muons is well studied and constrained. We analyze various meson decay, g-2, beam dump and reactor bounds on the CP-odd Higgs with mass below the muon threshold, in particular, addressing the question how light a CP-odd Higgs can be. We find that it has to be heavier than 210 MeV or have couplings to fermions 4 orders of magnitude below those of the Standard Model Higgs. Our analysis applies more generally to couplings of a light pseudoscalar to matter.

The μ-problem, the NMSSM and string theory

We discuss recent developments on the solution of the so-called supersymmetric mu-problem in the context of heterotic orbifolds. In particular, an approximate R symmetry can induce an admissible mu-term in Minkowski vacua of orbifold models with the MSSM spectrum. A natural solution to the mu-problem is also offered by explicit string-derived NMSSMs. These models help avoid the fine-tuning of the MSSM.
