Lorentzian path integral in Kantowski-Sachs anisotropic cosmology

Motivated by the recent development in quantum cosmology, we revisit the anisotropic Kantowski-Sachs model in the light of a Lorentzian path integral formalism. Studies so far have considered the Euclidean method where the choice of the lapse integration contour is constrained by certain physical considerations rather than mathematical justification. In this paper, we have studied the Hartle-Hawking no-boundary proposal along with the use of Picard-Lefschetz theory in performing the lapse integration. In an isotropic limit, we show our results agree with the studies made in FLRW cosmology. We also observe that in the large scale structure the no-boundary proposal tends towards a conical singularity at the beginning of time. We have also performed a massless scalar perturbation analysis with no back reaction. This reveals that if there were any perturbation present at the beginning of the universe then that would flare up at the final boundary.

Hawking effect in an extremal Kerr black hole spacetime

It is well known that extremal black holes do not Hawking radiate, which is usually realized by taking an extremal limit from the nonextremal case. However, one cannot perceive the same phenomenon using the Bogoliubov transformation method starting from an extremal black hole itself, i.e., without the limiting case consideration. In that case, the Bogoliubov coefficients do not satisfy the required normalization condition. In canonical formulation, which closely mimics the Bogoliubov transformation method, one can consistently reproduce the vanishing number density of Hawking quanta for an extremal Kerr black hole. In this method, the relation between the spatial near-null coordinates, imperative in understanding the Hawking effect, was approximated into a sum of linear and inverse terms only. In the present work, we first show that one can reach the same conclusion in canonical formulation even with the complete relationship between the near-null coordinates, which contains an additional logarithmic term. It is worth mentioning that in the nonextremal case, a similar logarithmic term alone leads to the thermal Hawking radiation. Secondly, we study the case with only the inverse term in the relation (i.e., when the spatial near-null coordinates associated to the past and future observers are inversely related to each other) to understand whether it is the main contributing term in vanishing number density. Third, for a qualitative realization, we consider a simple thought experiment to understand the corresponding Hawking temperature and conclude that the inverse term indeed plays a crucial role in the vanishing number density.

Meissner like effect in holographic superconductors with back reaction

In this article we employ the matching method to analytically investigate the properties of holographic superconductors in the framework of Maxwell electrodynamics taking into account the effects of back reaction on spacetime. The relationship between the critical temperature ($T_{c}$) and the charge density ($ρ$) has been obtained first. The influence of back reaction on Meissner like effect in this holographic superconductor is then studied. The results for the critical temperature indicate that the condensation gets harder to form when we include the effect of back reaction. The expression for the critical magnetic field ($B_{c}$) above which the superconducting phase vanishes is next obtained. It is observed from our investigation that the ratio of $B_{c}$ and $T_{c}^{2}$ increases with the increase in the back reaction parameter. However, the critical magnetic field $B_c$ decreases with increase in the back reaction parameter.

Anisotropic scalar-metric quantum cosmology and unitarity

In this article we perform the Wheeler-DeWitt quantization for Bianchi type $I$ anisotropic cosmological model in the presence of a scalar field minimally coupled to the Einstein-Hilbert gravity theory. We also consider the cosmological (perfect) fluid to construct the matter sector of the model whose dynamics plays the role of time. After obtaining the Wheeler-DeWitt equation from the Hamiltonian formalism, we then define the self-adjointness relations properly. Doing that we proceed to get a solution for the Wheeler-DeWitt equation and construct a well behaved wave function for the universe. The unitary evolution of the wave function in the presence of the scalar field is finally restored by an appropriate choice of weight factor in defining the norm of the wave packet. It is then concluded that the Big-Bang singularity can be removed in the context of quantum cosmology.

Scalar-metric quantum cosmology with Chaplygin gas and perfect fluid

In this paper we consider the flat FRW cosmology with a scalar field coupled with the metric along with generalized Chaplygin gas and perfect fluid comprising the matter sector. We use the Schutz's formalism to deal with the generalized Chaplygin gas sector. The full theory is then quantized canonically using the Wheeler-DeWitt Hamiltonian formalism. We then solve the WD equation with appropriate boundary conditions. Then by defining a proper completeness relation for the self-adjointness of the WD equation we arrive at the wave packet for the universe. It is observed that the peak in the probability density gets affected due to both fluids in the matter sector, namely, the Chaplygin gas and perfect fluid.

Interacting Chaplygin gas revisited

The implications of considering interaction between Chaplygin gas and a barotropic fluid with constant equation of state have been explored. The unique feature of this work is that assuming an interaction $Q \propto Hρ_d$, analytic expressions for the energy density and pressure have been derived in terms of the Hypergeometric $_2\text{F}_1$ function. It is worthwhile to mention that an interacting Chaplygin gas model was considered in 2006 by Zhang and Zhu, nevertheless, analytic solutions for the continuity equations could not be determined assuming an interaction proportional to $H$ times the sum of the energy densities of Chaplygin gas and dust. Our model can successfully explain the transition from the early decelerating phase to the present phase of cosmic acceleration. Arbitrary choice of the free parameters of our model through trial and error show at recent observational data strongly favors $w_m=0$ and $w_m=-\frac{1}{3}$ over the $w_m=\frac{1}{3}$ case. Interestingly, the present model also incorporates the transition of dark energy into the phantom domain, however, future deceleration is forbidden.

Thermodynamics and emergent universe

We show that in the isentropic scenario the first order thermodynamical particle creation model gives an emergent universe solution even when the chemical potential is non-zero. However there exists no emergent universe scenario in the second order non-equilibrium theory for the particle creation model. We then point out a correspondence between the particle creation model with barotropic equation of state and the equation of state giving rise to an emergent universe without particle creation in spatially flat FRW cosmology.
